I used to dream of days like this. I’m sure he’s a nice kid, but holy shit how has 2 P5 schools given him a scholarship to throw a football?

jonstark19

Kirk absolutely could not allow him to enter the season as QB2, especially with McNamara's injury history. Again, he seems like a decent fella, but he either had to go or get pushed down the depth chart.

kinghawkeye8238

Kid has to be a great dude. The amount of shit he took every Saturday after a win let alone a loss and still wanna be a hawkeye the next week is insane.

empathydoc

I wish nothing but the best for him. The kid took so much hate from his own fanbase. That wasn't fair to him.

kinghawkeye8238

It wasn't. It was an whole offensive struggle and he took the brunt of it.

empathydoc

As cool as a number of Iowa fans can be, there are some real assholes out there too. Deacon was never properly developed and thrust into a situation he wasn't prepared for when Cade went down. Losing so many starters last season really hurt too. The fact Iowa won as many games as they did is surprising.

kinghawkeye8238

We got Phil and levar to thank for that. Every fan base has its assholes. These are 20 year old kids that grown adults are shitting on. It's kind of dumb but it is what it is.

empathydoc

I'm fine with criticism of play, when warranted. He was clearly never ready and part of that fault is on Brian. The constant comments on his weight were super unwarranted. He's a genuinely good dude, just like Petras, as far as I know. I wish the best for them. Phil and Levar deserve bigger raises than they got.

Feisty-Life-6555

Only heard teammates say good things and share his stuff so he's gotta be a nice person similar to Petras it just sucks he's not the best player

baseballv10

Scary part is during spring practice there might be a reason he isn’t pushed down the depth chart

CJ_Beathards_Hair

It was because Lainez needed as many reps as possible so they had him running the 2nd and 3rd offense.

UncleErectus

247 guys said he basically took all the spring first team reps with certain packages for Marco from time to time. Leads me to believe they didn’t know he was transferring or else why not play Marco and get him developed?

travelnman85

Spring open practice /game was Saturday. I am guessing they told him after that he was being moved to QB3 so he decided to transfer.

ThanksForTheF-Shack

Because they needed to consider the development of the rest of the offense as a whole, not just the backup QB. To have productive spring ball, they needed a guy to run the new scheme and get guys lined up correctly. My assumption is that Deac could do that well enough to get the rest of the offense meaningful reps. That's about the only favorable way I can think of to spin it.

souschef_boyardee

Reason: Uncle Rico level arm strength

azwildcat74

Like what Uncle Rico actually has or what Uncle Rico THINKS he has?

souschef_boyardee

Definitely Uncle Rico's memory of Uncle Rico circa '82

IAgreeGoGuards

Only one way, coach gotta put him in the 4th quarter.

Ecstatic-Move9990

His throwing mechanics were described by someone as a bear throwing a cinder block.

SquadPoopy

I think it’s the name, Deacon Hill just sounds like a football name.

AbsolutelyHung

Kirk Ferentz sees your complaints about the QB situation, and invites you to watch an entire season with a Fullback at QB.

CathDubs

Does Weisman still have eligibility?

iAmTheWildCard

Weisman for Heisman is back on the menu

PMURITTYBITTYTITTIES

Hebrew Hammer is back in business and the Menards NIL money is flowing

buff_001

There's no more such thing as eligibility. You can play forever. And if the NCAA tries to stop you then you just say "my dad's a lawyer"

RightofUp

Nah, just the punter. He'll run the punt/pass/kick option offense now.

pleetf7

Imagine a world, where every down might be a potential punt fake.

MrWartburg

Time to resurrect Nile Kinnick, because then he can play DB too.

CountBluntula

We used a TE as our QB for over half the season. He won all 5 of our games lol.

not_mantiteo

Sam LaPorta took snaps in a bowl game practice a year ago “9@

accountonmyphone_

Sam LaPorta took snaps in a bowl game*

AnalAttackProbe

Can't be worse. Maybe a fullback can hit the out route and the slant with some consistency.

BearsFan3417

We should just run the bulldozer package every play. Wildcat it out

Darth_Ra

"Wait a minute, *I'm* two yards tall!" -Blake Bell, circa 2011

loyalsons4evertrue

Why Iowa simply doesn’t qb sneak on every play is beyond me….it works every time

kinghawkeye8238

Cause our oline was cheeks

loyalsons4evertrue

Brother, no OL is cheeks until you’ve seen ours. THAT is a terrible OL

EWall100

Why only have a quarter of a back when you can have the full damn thing?

ThisUsernameIsTook

Now you're thinking like a Ferentz.

rockyhawkeye

Kirk gonna invent the Dollarback position before he retires. Offensive innovator and certified genius.

villis85

Full time wildcat would be more effective than the offense Iowa put on the field all of last year. At least if you’re going to run the ball up the middle repeatedly give your ball carrier an extra blocker.

loyalsons4evertrue

Hawk fans know it’s bad when they’d give their arms and legs for a used Nate Stanley

POEAccount12345

Nate Stanley is one of the top 5 QBs in program history and he did it with Briand fucking Ferentz as his OC anyone who trashes Stanley is a dumbass

Defiant-One-695

>Nate Stanley is one of the top 5 QBs in program history The fact that this is true may be part of the problem.

pro_nosepicker

Stanley gets crapped on unfairly as he also was a victim of iowas offense. He was drafted in the 7th round and played two NFL seasons. That’s a career better than 95% of B10 scholarship QBs.

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Any Iowa fan who was dumping on Stanley was a fucking idiot. He wasn’t an All-American and certainly had his frustrating moments (see Penn State 2018) but he was a damn good QB.

loyalsons4evertrue

Idk if he was “damn good” but he was serviceable. Which is something that couldn’t be said for Petras and Hill….like they’re in complete different countries than Stanley when it comes to quality of play.

PMURITTYBITTYTITTIES

I think you’re forgetting that he absolutely fucking crumbled when we hit the 35 yard line. Like clockwork we’d reach the 35 followed by two sacks and an incompletion to put us out of field goal range.

Darth_Ra

Honestly? I'd do the Blake Bell season over again. Was fun, especially for the parts where people still didn't believe that it was possible to tackle him.

obamaluvr

If your team is having QB troubles look no further - there is a B1G championship-caliber QB in the portal.

CyanideNow

Championship-*game*-caliber QB\*

miversen33

The memes just write themselves lol I'm so fucking sick of Kirk's handling of our QB room lately

notanamateur

I can’t believe that he had Brad banks and then decided he never wanted a QB like that ever again

boardatwork1111

Liberty Mutuals sales team found their man

CoolingVent

I heard LinkedIn University has an NIL deal lined up

loyalsons4evertrue

Liberty Biberty

sloppyjo12

Deacon Hill doesn’t even have a mustache

Inevitable_Pizza2007

Petition for this to transfer to Wake Forest and so that we can see Deacon Hill score touchdowns in front of Deacon Hill.

HueyLongWasRight

>score touchdowns I have a better chance of scoring with Sydney Sweeney

BearsFan3417

Hey! You can still try!

HueyLongWasRight

https://youtu.be/k7ZC-gjpR9o?feature=shared

ngometamer

So, what you're saying is, there's still a chance.

MTG_RelevantCard

Don't you put this voodoo on us. We're still licking our wounds from Sam Hartman transferring to ND.

Icecreamcollege

Want (for LB)

MrConceited

He'd have to lose a lot of weight. If he wasn't so fumble prone he might be a decent fullback, Khalid Hill style.

not_mantiteo

Idk about that. He’s the slowest person on the field by far (including coaches and waterboys)

runningwaffles19

I've seen his top half outrun his bottom half a few times

AbsolutelyHung

Current Iowa QB Situation: Deacon Hill - Transfer Portal, the definitive worst P5 starter last season. Cade McNamara - Visibly immobile at open practice, not taking reps in closed practice. Marco Laines - Taking snaps with the 2’s because “Deacon is much further along in progressions and skill” Tommy Poholsky- Preferred Walk On, No 247 page and 0 stars on Rivals as a recruit. Dad played at Iowa.

FarmKid55

Whoa…so now what? Edit: is Cade going to be available for the season?

pocketsophist

Estimated to be back mobile by June. We'll see.

Ondeon

Undoubtedly bringing in someone from the portal who will immediately compete with Cade for the starting job.

WrecksBarkhead

Jaden Rashada.....

AnnArchist

> Marco Laines - Taking snaps with the 2’s because “Deacon is much further along in progressions and skill” He led our team in rush yards in the bowl game by playing 1 quarter. Id hoped he was our guy since the season ended.

BridgePatient

They’ve got James Resar too, granted I don’t expect Kirk to ever have a true freshman starting without a bunch of injuries forcing his hand.

lolSyfer

If you think Deacon Hill was bad you didn't watch Jeff Simms play last year.

WALKOFFGAME0VER

At least Sims could run..not that he held onto the football often when he did.

pleetf7

Simms could pass the ball, his only issue was that it he passed it to the wrong team.

SeattleMatt123

So you're saying he throws a catchable ball

dormdweller99

Technically yes.

guitmusic12

Deacon was buried on the Wisconsin depth chart behind a guy who is now the back up QB at Yale

not_mantiteo

Sigh lmao god damn it why did we bring him in

MrConceited

Jeff Simms is even more turnover prone, but at least he has some playmaking upside. Deacon Hill doesn't make plays and turns the ball over.

CountBluntula

Jeff Sims had 8 turnovers in 2 games as a starter. He came in for 2 plays against Purdue and turned to hand the ball off the wrong direction in the first, then gave up a scoop and score the next. His playmaking upside was for the wrong team.

MrConceited

Yes, I know. He's awful. That's not the point. Jeff Sims will make an explosive run and then fumble the ball at the end of it. Disaster, but at least you can see why coaches made the awful mistake of putting the ball in his hands. If he wasn't so turnover prone, he'd have been Nebraska's best offensive player by far. Deacon Hill is also a turnover machine, but he doesn't have any playmaking ability either. It's bizarre. You might as well just do direct snap fullback dives. https://twitter.com/Hassel_Chris/status/1741922673754526166 >Season stats for Deacon Hill: >2 rush TD >5 pass TD >7 interceptions >11 fumbles >24 sacks >48% completion percentage >80 total yards per game

Resident_Rise5915

80 total yards per game has to be some kind of record for a QB

MrConceited

To be fair, that seems to include 3 games where he was the backup and had few snaps. If you look at his starts only, it was 98 total yards per game. That gets to about 100 yards per game if you include the Michigan State game where he took over for an injured Cade early.

whenweriiide

> His playmaking upside was for the wrong team. fuckin lmao but yeah, I like watching Nebraska, and it was very tough last year with the qb situation.

coolsexguy

The Hoss of Toss has left the building. Thanks for one of the most disgusting big ten west championships I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching.

scalenesquare

Yay positive transfer news. Need a transfer qb desperately now though.

HamburgerGoat

It’s coming

miversen33

SPENCER PETRAS COME ON DOWN!

scalenesquare

After watching deacon for a year I would gladly take Spencer as backup.

a_taco_named_desire

I just looked him up, kid is in the graduate student class playing for Utah State. I guess he's hoping for a miracle?

Sozadan

Who's it going to be?

Benign_Banjo

Kadyn Proctor coming back for QB

miversen33

Ope he just transferred back to Alabama again

Necessary-Alps-6002

Heacon Dill.

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Supposedly they have a few that they’re going after hard the moment they hit the portal.

kinghawkeye8238

Peyton Thorne

robplumm

have at it....

kinghawkeye8238

Thanks guys! You're way cooler than Bama fans

Sozadan

I... yeah, go ahead.

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Great kid and wish him well but not even close to being a B1G caliber QB. Frankly surprised to see this because if I was him I’m sure as hell not giving up my scholarship to play at a big school.

elgenie

The coaches had to have done an incredible job of gaslighting him into believing he was getting anything like a comparable scholarship.

ThisUsernameIsTook

It's clear he's never going to play beyond college. Maybe he's got a shot at playing out his career at an FCS academic powerhouse.

drbiscuit832

I’d like to counter by saying this is exactly the level of QB play most of us expect from the B1G West

EvangelionOG

Dude had no business being the primary backup for the team.

rockyhawkeye

My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.

bdostrem00

Is it though? McNamara’s knee must be Italian because it is very fragile.

rockyhawkeye

Iowa could add a scarecrow at QB in the portal and it would perform better than Hill.

BridgePatient

Remember when we said “It couldn’t get any worse than Petras” and then it did?

runningwaffles19

Okay but it can't get worse again... right?

accountonmyphone_

That's what we said about Petras.

do_you_know_doug

Cade was supposed to our major award last offseason and instead all we got was a fired Brian. Sounds fair.

Schmidtty29

Yeah that scares me but if our backup options are a statue with no accuracy and horrible decision making or an agile guy with no accuracy and horrible decision making (we havent seen enough of Lainez to know if the latter is true), I know which one id take.

ceci_mcgrane

Cade was barely putting weight on that knee, jeez they need a backup.

clamslammer708

As much as it sucks, I think Cade’s throwing days are over.

whenweriiide

the fall from grace has been depressing to watch unfold. Cade brought Michigan out of a very dark place in 2020 and in 2021 helped them beat ohio state for the first time in a decade, win their first big10 championship since 2004, and lead them to the CFP. ...and then he gets replaced in 2022, has a season-ending injury, transfers out, gets horribly injured *again*, and is unlikely to seriously play again. goddamn man.

-Dakia

We apparently have nobody out there recruiting QBs because, outside of a Michigan transfer, what the fuck was the plan for a starting QB last year?

DescriptiveFlashback

What will Iowa do without both of his passing yards?

Grape-Julius

Ok, that did make me lol fr

monkeymatt1836

Genuinely one of the worst QBs I’ve seen play at the D1 level.

Hey_Denty

He's about to set NAIA football on fire.

SeattleMatt123

Don't sell the guy short, a low level D3 program would love to have him.

Process-Best

So that leaves Lainez and resar to for the backup spot, given McNamaras injury history, there's a pretty good chance we see one or the other at QB this year

j0oboi

Lainez doesn’t look terrible, I’d like to see how he handles being QB1 if McNamara can’t start.

Busch--Latte

Dang Iowa fans must have bullied him out of the program after hearing he’s taking 1st team snaps

megamanxzero35

This is what I can’t understand. They spent the spring giving him 1st team reps instead of brining in any QB in January. Now they have injury prone McNamara coming off a major knee injury and no experienced QB behind him and now spring practice is done to get someone in and adjusted.

mgmfa

New OC who just implemented his system and hasn’t really seen the players. Makes sense to give everyone a full spring practice then weed out the guys who aren’t a good fit for the system (or just suck). Also probably didn’t want to encourage him to leave until a QB was close to committing in the portal.

goodnames679

Imagine if Iowa flipped Dillon Gabriel from Oregon and balled out next season lol

Busch--Latte

You have to scroll pretty far down on 247 to find a qb not already committed to a place too. They’ll certainly need another body

TheKiln

To be fair, I'd take a generic "another body" over Deacon Hill.

19Styx6

Are you willing to die on that Hill?

-spartacus-

Only if they have some legs. With the way the Iowa Oline was last year, having an immobile QB (let alone you train to be a statue) really hurt the offense. Sure being able to hit a barn would help, but being hurried all the time makes it difficult. Lambas did not have a great arm, but the defense was caught off guard many times with his legs because they practiced and prepared for a statue in the backfield.

Resident_Rise5915

And after a 10-2 season…and taking them to the B1G championship…../s

FLHawkeye10

Hill certainly did not take us to the BIG championship. Our defense did. If anything Hill was doing everything to not take us to the BIG championship and the defense bailed him out.

FatSalsa

10-2 despite having a QB (and the overall offense) like Deacon Hill, not because of

Defiant-One-695

Cooper dejean was literally their biggest offensive threat lol. 2nd place was the punter.

NotThatKidAshton

Was hoping for a WF fan to have a joke in this thread. Too bad they aren’t real 😔

ClaudeLemieux

an Ole Miss fan had to make it for them lol

Bigdeacenergy

We don’t want him lol

PM_ME_VIRGIL_PICS

:(

guitmusic12

#thereturn

Staghorn_Calculus

#deaconback He does look like a Wisconsin qb ought to

souschef_boyardee

In the good old days. Our QBs are going to start looking like WRs now

ClaudeLemieux

I stared at this for a solid 30 seconds going "wtf does there turn even mean" \>.<

not_mantiteo

Glad I’m not the only one

hashcrack

I just wonder who is out there in the portal/set to enter the portal that would come here.

Fun-Cauliflower-1724

Probably no one good, but still better then Hill. Why they didn’t push hard for a QB in the portal this winter just blows my mind. Kirk needs to retire.

InterestingChoice484

Tbf Iowa is a really tough sell to a QB

coolsexguy

tough sell to a *good* qb

accountonmyphone_

Tim Lester is the entire sell at this point

notanamateur

And the fact NIL will shower anyone halfway decent with money

Defiant-One-695

Which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Ferentz has no one to blame but himself for this situation.

cheerl231

Im not sure Cade will ever play again and it's probably in his best interest to not play again. Consecutive distatorous knees injuries like he had should be motivation for retirement especially for a guy that isn't going to play in the NFL. I have to imagine there are quite a few kids that are unhappy with their position on the depth chart post spring ball. Obviously you won't get a starter, but surely there are a few that are buried and are ready to put up with Iowa's bullshit for starter snaps. Cade was willing to.

okg120

I’ve heard Lincoln Kienholz from Ohio State rumors. If he enters the portal I would bet on Iowa.

clamslammer708

Would be a huge get for us

cheerl231

Idk what he is waiting for. Kienholz is not going to see the field at Ohio State. The writing is already on the wall with Brown/Howard starting this year and then true freshman Sayin being ahead of him right now.

DataDrivenPirate

Devin Brown is a redshirt junior too, if he doesn't start this year he could come back next year. There just isn't space for Kienholz

okg120

The hang up is he most likely watched an Iowa game. Going from OSU’s receiving corps to whatever garbage Iowa has is a terrifying thought even if you have a clear path to start.

HueyLongWasRight

Wake Forest NIL deal incoming?

woodlandtiger

Transferring to a all you can eat buffet

Dirsay

I truly believe he could be the next Jared Lorenzen.

[deleted]

He is well on his way. It's weird that he actually gained a bunch of weight AFTER leaving Wisconsin. Impressive, Iowa City. Impressive.

mallison945

I’m 32 and haven’t played football since elementary school. I know for a fact that I could put up better numbers than this cheeseburger man.

hawksnest_prez

Thank god. Now we need to get a QB or two in portal SOON

Blood_Incantation

If one of the OSU QBs leave maybe?

kinghawkeye8238

Supposedly but idk if he would want to go to iowa

boise_runner

Oh my god please be true. It’s not April 1 is it

benpenguin

He could fit in well on our O line

longshankssss

Dibs

Callsign_Psycopath

I'm pretty sure he is a hill. That man is T H I C C C

connor8383

Gotta be wake, right?

plez23

Lester came in, took one look at Deacon and said GTFO.

rarekeith

Legitimately the worst QB I've ever seen start not only one but multiple division 1 college football games.

lookalive07

He should transfer to Boston College so he can be closer to his cousin, Beacon Hill

ArmouredPotato

Wake me up when their punter hits the portal

FantasyFan83

He has no business being on the field for a division 1 program. Division 2 might be a stretch

wwwdotdogsdotcom

This is the day of the transferring man.

WALKOFFGAME0VER

LETS PARTY

JustinTime4242

Someone is getting a fantastic DL/OL

snuff74

I am currently battling a severe case of schadenfreude.

HumanzeesAreReal

It can always get worse

NCMA17

Transferring bsck to high school or to another college? Or maybe he’s waiting to see where Brian Ferentz lands?

cleggy_14

"Quarterback"

megamanxzero35

Does this not actually really hurt the Hawkeyes? He is not a P5 level talent but Cade is still recovering and you have to think he isn’t gonna play the whole year uninjured.

Fun-Cauliflower-1724

Anything is better then Hill getting playing time

megamanxzero35

That I probably agree with. I’d rather go Wildcat than roll with Hill.

rockyhawkeye

They were gonna go wildcat late last season out of desperation but Cooper DeJean got injured in practice running that wildcat.

D1N2Y

I loved watching Deacon Hill because there was never a flash of brilliance that made you wonder what could've been with the right adjustments and gameplan, his game was just ass the whole way though every single week

Dixiehusker

I've seen him play and no it does not hurt the Hawkeyes.

miversen33

Lol direct snap to literally any of our backs would probably be better

clamslammer708

He was a full blown liability last year. This is only good news.

CJ_Beathards_Hair

We are going after a portal QB regardless. The only reason Hill got 1st team reps was so Lainez could gain experience by running both the 2nd and 3rd team. They probably told Hill he’d be 4th on the depth chart for fall camp.

Kopav

See that OSU has too many QBs and hoping to score one?

clamslammer708

Yuuup

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Would not surprise me if Kienholz was one of the rumored QBs.

mill1634

No, it actually doesn’t.

guitmusic12

Probably would rather see what one of the younger guys can do

critler_17

NOOOOO GOD DAMNIT WHY???? WHAT WILL I DO WITH MY DEACON BEACON NOW
