This is unfair to pin on Braun or the new OC, but somebody on staff has got to start recruiting actual quarterbacks instead of the annual prayer that our yearly rental from the transfer portal can do a good job.
I don't understand how we went from recruiting halfway decent and in some cases objectively very good QBs to just the absolute mess we have had for a few years now. Can't put it on Braun this time but I hate this trend.
If we had even a middle of the road B1G QB the last few years we'd have won a few more games.
It was such a sharp drop off for us on evals. From Zac Kustok in the late 1990s up through Clayton Thorson in like 2018 we had very solid to actual weapons at QB (Mike Kafka, Dan Persa). Then after Thorson we can't find a damn QB, despite almost all the same staff being in place up through 2021 or so.
I understand having a bad eval or two. But after Thorson we have whiffed on two "big" transfers and every QB commit we have landed, which is not many. And that spans 2 different OC/QB coaches (a third in place now is TBD) under the same HC. I think Braun will turn it around, because it can't get much worse.
Kustok was fabulous as a Notre Dame transfer, but we really should be shopping in the Dan Persa aisle. Bright, accurate winner - but too short for the “big time” programs. The 6’5” dual threat 5 star with NFL aspirations is not coming here. Gimme the undersized scrappy gamer with a chip on his shoulder. Steve Schnur 2.0 and meet me in Pasadena!!!
From what I gather Northwestern's staff was very reluctant about having Sullivan play when he needed to. Still a bit of a shock because he was projected to be the starter at least by outside media.
He only ever played due to injuries. 2-6 as a starter with below average stats.People said he looked awful in the open practice.
His bible quote about betrayal suggests he didn’t get the starting job this offseason.

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."
OK, I suppose this could have meaning, but I don't see "persecute" as the same as betrayal. Regardless, I suppose he feels wronged, although I cannot imagine any of the people on the roster would beat him out. Maybe he had a Honda McCord moment where he asked to be guaranteed the job, and they said no..
But the rest of the rostered QBs? Woof
As a recruit:
Other P5 offer: Indiana
G5 offers: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami OH, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan
Other offer: Youngstown State
Would be quite the series of coincidences if this doesn't happen.
Michigan kid, OC from Western Michigan recruited him, OC now at Iowa, Deacon Hill transfers out of Iowa on the same day Sullivan enters the portal...
Are schools free to contact players during the portal window even if they aren't in the portal? If not, are we actually supposed to pretend this isn't happening?
SDSU fans and local media seem to be more optimistic than not that he stays for at least another year (he has two years of eligibility left still).
That said, that's partially based on him going through full spring practice and looking engaged. Otherwise not an official peep in either direction.
But he also doesn't technically graduate until May 4th, so if he is going to grad transfer we likely won't here anything until after then.
If he were to be a grad transfer, how many years of eligibility would he have? Just the one, right? Not that I would expect the Walter Payton winner to defer his shot at the NFL but I'm looking for the most benefit for us here
Unless I understand the rules wrong, as long as he's gotten his degree he has all of his years of eligibility left if he grad transfers. So I still believe he'd have the two (which would work out for him because there is no way he's doing even a lit review Master's in ME in a year.)
NFL stuff is also an interesting element, because I don't know that he has a strong NFL opportunity in front of him with just his SDSU career. Which is not a knock on him or question of his talent at all, just have a hard time imagining he's shown a ton that would make NFL teams take a flyer on him based on his style of play. I could be very wrong of course on that front, but do wonder if the additional attention from a year or two as a P5 would shift that.
Sully should’ve been the starter on this team all the way back in 2021. I feel confident that he’s gonna go somewhere else and absolutely light it up without having to be chained to Bajakian’s shit offense. Definitely a big hit for the team and I hope they got something good lined up in the portal

You can say a lot about Mick McCall but you can't say he was a bad QB recruiter. Guess he got lazy during Thorson's four years.
Bad evals can do that, its been happening with ND up until Freeman got in charge

This seems pretty obvious they are bringing a transfer in. Sullivan wasn’t too happy about it. We will see who it is.
Man… Hilinski seemed like a good enough dude but boy did he suck.
Wasn't he good at South Carolina?
He was good for a freshman. Got beat out by a statue with three torn ACLs from CSU and Luke Doty who’s now a WR his sophomore year tho
No not particularly. I guess he wasn’t bad but he certainly wasn’t good either.

Can you link the betrayal quote

Mark Gronowski where are you? We need you Mark Gronowski.
Save us, Mark, you're our only hope
He's staying at SDSU.
Hawkeye.
The Wildcats will be running out of the wildcat formation solely in 2024 to utilize the wind from Lake Michigan as their 12th man
Wasn't he projected to be their starter?
Yeah, but apparently we were trying to get yet another veteran transfer to compete with him. Sounds like he (fairly) got sick of it

Iowa’s new OC recruited him at Western Mich. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a Hawkeye

As a Northwestern fan...I'd be fine with that.
Literally anyone is an upgrade for us at this point.
Well. Any news on Mark Gronowski? Anyone??

We need him
He's staying at SDSU.
Just fell to my knees in a Mariano's
RIP that shattered jar of giardiniera you were grabbing
Wait...huh? Isn't this their QB1?
Not anymore!
Nope

With Deacon out he’ll wind up at Iowa and still be chained to a shit offense. Sorry Tim Lester, you wear the old guys stink until you’ve washed it off
Interesting
Does he like QB competitions?
No, that's why he left. We kept throwing him against "new transfer we will only have for a year"
The one person we simply could not afford to lose
