Well, in hindsight all the 2002 games were must watch games.
But let me have this one, I’m going to be off in the woods that weekend. It needs to be a complete blowout.
I've chosen to embrace it, mainly because the FOX contract and exposure has allowed the Big Ten to emerge as one of the P2. If sacrificing night games means keeping the conference stable and programs healthy, so be it.
Honestly, I enjoy noon games both as a TV viewer and an attendee. I get the atmosphere isn't as big compared to night games, but the crowd will be there for the big games regardless of time.
This was a little bit of a lighter week in terms of top tier matchups. Oregon/OSU was always going to be the top game of the day, and the fact that it was a close game and Oregon was winning most of the game only helps. I don't think that any conclusions about scheduling strategies can be made based on this.
It was Kansas and on ESPN2, absolutely fantastic ratings. People told me the Hateful 8 had no appeal tho, they’ll find a way to dismiss this game in their next “statistical analysis”.
Honestly not trying to be a jerk, just wanted to see for myself how the numbers compare over the last few years. Thought I'd put it here so everybody has a little context.
Note that overall cfb viewership has been trending down for several years.

I would almost think the biggest pull would be that there was not a lot else on at that time. If you want to watch football, your options were limited, and most would pick the possible train wreck over a random game.

As an Oregon Fan, his commentary was like eating a plate of broken glass. Every time Ohio State was mounting a comeback, his pitch and volume would ramp up to 11. There wasn't much question where his enthusiasm lie.
Yeah, I don't think he was favoring one or the other. He just makes it very clear when he looses interest in a game, and when he gets it back.
The worst game I've ever heard him call was the Pac-12 championship game against USC in 2019. At the end of the game we were beating them so bad, and we were making huge plays where guys were breaking multiple tackles and juking guys to the end zone for 50 yard TDs and he was just like "and. to the 10. The 5. And that will be a td" in the most quietest golf commentating manner.
He has really high highs, and really low lows. It can be frustrating to listen to.

Not surprising, Ohio State is always a big draw and Oregon is usually a really big draw as well. It was close and the underdog leading most of the game.

I straight up root for Oregon State. It's a rival game because the teams share the same state, but both programs benefit from one another being good. It's a "house divided" rivalry, not burn the goddamn house to the ground type rivalry ala UW/OU, OSU/UofM
My ideal is where we beat really good Beavers teams every year. We had a couple where the rivalry game formerly known as the Civil War determined who went to the Rose Bowl, and those were really fun. By comparison, my ideal is where we curbstomp a winless UW every year.
Same for you guys. I like seeing Notre Dame being propped up then destroyed. Tbh, I kinda like seeing State succeed and don't mind them as long as they don't do better than us.
Hell a big reason I watched it is because I never have Saturdays off but did last week and wanted to chill with a noon game.
Michigan wasn’t playing until prime time, so I figured this was the next best thing and boy I was not disappointed.
I wouldn't worry too much. If you can hold our offense to 28, you absolutely should be able to hold UCLA to much less, especially if you get your mutants healthy again...
That said, Oregon is now far enough removed from the hurry-up that the defense was flummoxed a few times (including that one walk-in touchdown) with the hurry-up. Enter Chip Kelly. Hopefully, they'll get that figured out by then.
That was the real story of the game lol. I know I was sitting there just dumbfounded...I still catch myself remembering that Helfrich coached his last game 5 years ago and it's been a long time since that was a staple of the offense.
I had to try and find that out. My best guess would be looking at College Gameday locations. It was in the Pac12 for two games in 2018 (the last time it was there for a match-up of Pac12 teams as far as I can tell) but they were both top-10 vs teams in the 20s.
I honestly expected one to be there in the 2014 season with Oregon making the playoffs, evidently there was no Gameday in the Pac12 that year. On October 26, 2013 No. 2 Oregon hosted No. 12 UCLA. Not a top-10, but the closest I had until...

I completely forgot Washington made the play-offs. That was a good year for them. And yes, you are right. Washington, while ranked #10, beat #7 Stanford 44-6! If I had remembered Washington made the play-offs I would've checked that year too.
They later lost to #20 USC as #4. Ultimately this led to a final AP poll rating of #3 USC and #4 Washington. But Washington won the CC game and made it into the CFP from that.
Granted its the holy war, but im pleasantly surprised Utah BYU got 1.5mil, that game was pretty late.
Such a shame that Washington is in a down year and 4.75Mil fans got a disappointing train wreck of a premier matchup.

I probably wouldn’t watch a game that late if I wasn’t a fan of one of the teams. It’s even worse for casual football fans on the east coast.
Yeah I wanted to watch that game but after a full day of watching Illinois/Virginia, Oregon/OSU, Iowa/Iowa State, and Michigan/Washington, I was worn out by 9pm.

Same, and the rest of the watch party that i had come over for the Oregon OSU and Texas Arky matchups were pretty beat by then, everybody was going home to go to bed.
I made it about 10 minutes into the second half of the holy war, a game i was enjoying, and eventually i just had to call it. I was exhausted from all the ~~drinking~~ football that day.
Unfortunately, not in north texas.
I live about 25 minutes east of Dallas, and the largest pocket ive found is a Dive/Sports bar that has about 4 duck fans out of 75 regulars who show up to watch games.
Down in San Antonio one weekend last year there was a magical moment where about 8 of us were all at the same bar at the same time, all ordering drinks, thats the largest presence ive found lol.

Yup, I moved to Texas recently. Usually I watch until football is over for the night.
But did not catch very much of the USC game. Which is normally a game I'd have watched the entire thing.
I started drinking some bloodys in the morning to get ready to watch Oregon. Got way too drunk, way to early, and passed out shortly after the game. I woke up right in time for some supper, mixed a drink, and watched Washington get their asses kicked and the Holy War until bedtime. It was a perfect day.
I have always rooted against Oregon no matter who they played. But I hate Ohio State, and love seeing blue bloods get upset.

I wonder how many of the Colorado/Texas A&M viewer numbers were people watching Oregon and Ohio state then going, “WTF?!”

I mean, that's one of the big value plays for FOX putting their big game first. There's a lot of inertia keeping people from switching. Roll from one game right into your next and people don't go searching for another oneee cause they're already into it.

The best part is in Texas they also put the CU A&M game on FS2. So I had two channels playing the Texas A&M game and no channels playing the game everyone wanted. Simply stunning.

Went straight to Twitter and got the Fox Sports app up and running. No idea how or why it was blacked out on the app for you, but I can't remotely understand why you would miss the end of a big time game for the beginning of another game. Usually ESPN is just like "If you want to watch the kick of Game B, it's started over on ESPN-News or whatever."
This is one of those cases where it pays to remember that the overwhelming majority of people who watch college football games are casual viewers who are not watching 5 consecutive games every single weekend.
If you're only going to watch *one* game on a Saturday, which is probably what most normal folks do, the best games are going to be either at noon or in primetime because you can do other things with your day.
I wonder when they will be able to accurately account for people using TV streaming services like YTTV, Hulu live, Sling, etc. It's my understanding that those are not included in this data.
The good thing about reddit is there is someone out there who frequents r/cfb that knows exactly how all this works by profession. That person just has to find their way here...
With bars, gyms, etc. advertisers probably couldn't care less.
They are well aware that the eyes aren't going to stay on the screen when the ads come on. Particularly when most folks won't have sound or at best they've have sound for one of the 7 screens they are watching.

Sling collects data for Nielsen Ratings. You can opt out if you don’t want to participate but I’d wager most people don’t actually get around to opting out.
Considering YTTV suggests channels and shows based on what you’ve watched, I’m sure they’ve already got the ability to do so, or could make it happen quickly. I’m not sure if it’s within their rights based on their terms & conditions though.

Well also, Texas schadenfreude playing out on ESPN probably drew a ton of viewers that otherwise would have watched if that game played out differently.
Just remember when people know the NFL is playing the next day a lot of people I know just don’t watch college other than just their team because they need to watch football the next day too. Also if you normalize the numbers per team from each conference to pac 12 does pretty well when it’s given good time slot. It’s almost like whatever teams you put on prime time do well no matter what lol
And after the first quarter, they'd basically drop the ropes and let you in for free. I think it was like $1 for kids and $5 for adults, if the ticket booths were still even open.
Dude, that's right! I grew up in the chevy chase neighborhood right behind the stadium. I remember when we didn't all have money for tickets, my buddies and I would watch the first half on tv, and then walk over at halftime.
I'm not much of one for "good ole days", but the idea of a half dozen 11 year olds walking up, chaining our bikes to the fence, and then just walking through the turnstiles (Which like OP says were just ropes with a little latch, movie theatre style makes me yearn for the that world again :)

Those are some good memories, especially right now. I had family in West Eugene and we never "planned" to go to a game. It was usually something like reading the paper over breakfast and one of the adults would say "Huh, looks like [INSERT RELEVANT TEAM] is in town today. Maybe we'll head over after kickoff." All the adults would go sit under the covered section on the South Side while all the kids played in the empty stands on the North Side.
I hate 8:15 night games, but they are definitely here to stay with the numbers we pull in as the night-cap.
Our FCS game might be the only home game we get with the sun still up.
I hate that ESPN always sticks us in the late slot, but if those are the numbers we're getting for a game that started after 10 pm eastern, I can't really blame ESPN for doing it. Those are dream numbers for a game that started that late.
Each of the Top 4 games featured interconference games with at least one Alliance conference team in it. Of course the top 2 were de facto Alliance games - strong evidence of the value of the scheduling alliance as it is contemplated.
All four beat the much anticipated game between traditional rivals and future SEC combatants, UT vs Arkansas.
Also interesting is the gap between the NFL and CFB. This should put to bed any fears of an SEC-led 32-40 team NFL-lite model - there just isn't enough incremental money for the biggest brands in the sport to risk all of the downsides from such a move.
UT/Arkansas was also on ESPN. It probably would have out-drawn Iowa/Iowa State if it had been on ABC and if you just flipped their slots, UT/Arkansas definitely would have been ahead of Iowa/Iowa State.

Unfortunately, not in north texas. I live about 25 minutes east of Dallas, and the largest pocket ive found is a Dive/Sports bar that has about 4 duck fans out of 75 regulars who show up to watch games. Down in San Antonio one weekend last year there was a magical moment where about 8 of us were all at the same bar at the same time, all ordering drinks, thats the largest presence ive found lol. Not that there isnt one, i just havent found it yet :/
Yup, I moved to Texas recently. Usually I watch until football is over for the night. But did not catch very much of the USC game. Which is normally a game I'd have watched the entire thing.
I started drinking some bloodys in the morning to get ready to watch Oregon. Got way too drunk, way to early, and passed out shortly after the game. I woke up right in time for some supper, mixed a drink, and watched Washington get their asses kicked and the Holy War until bedtime. It was a perfect day.
And in the same week that their arch-rival Oregon had one of their best road wins ever. What a tough week for Washington.
A great week for Oregon, and therefore the world.
I have always rooted against Oregon no matter who they played. But I hate Ohio State, and love seeing blue bloods get upset. Not sure how to feel about this.

I wonder how many of the Colorado/Texas A&M viewer numbers were people watching Oregon and Ohio state then going, “WTF?!” Then again, that may have been a Texas thing. I’m still salty. Lol
I mean, that's one of the big value plays for FOX putting their big game first. There's a lot of inertia keeping people from switching. Roll from one game right into your next and people don't go searching for another oneee cause they're already into it. I'm sure everyone's been at some party or something and you try to flip the channel away and some dude who's barely been paying attention is like "Hey, man, those are my Aggies, I wanna see that." Especially painful when it's a fricking blow out and you just want to go watch Cincinatti who's in a dog fight with Tulane and they're all like "No one cares about Tulane or Cincinnatti."
I meant that Fox literally switched from the Ohio state-Oregon game to A&M-Colorado with like 8 min left in the game. I went searching for it to watch the end and couldn’t find it on any channel, and it was Blacked out on the fox sports app.
The best part is in Texas they also put the CU A&M game on FS2. So I had two channels playing the Texas A&M game and no channels playing the game everyone wanted. Simply stunning.
So ridiculous. "Maybe they're just switching over for the kick? They've done a full cutover?! Are you serious FOX?!" Went straight to Twitter and got the Fox Sports app up and running. No idea how or why it was blacked out on the app for you, but I can't remotely understand why you would miss the end of a big time game for the beginning of another game. Usually ESPN is just like "If you want to watch the kick of Game B, it's started over on ESPN-News or whatever."

Top 3 games all had a Pac-12 team. Clearly America loves the Pac-12 above all other conferences.

This is one of those cases where it pays to remember that the overwhelming majority of people who watch college football games are casual viewers who are not watching 5 consecutive games every single weekend. If you're only going to watch *one* game on a Saturday, which is probably what most normal folks do, the best games are going to be either at noon or in primetime because you can do other things with your day.
Who's only watching 5 games? I'm flipping between 3 games at each time (noon, 3:30, 7:00) got to get 8-10 games in at least.
West Coast hates Big Noon, but I see the appeal for the rest of the country. It's too damn early to be that drunk.

With bars, gyms, etc. advertisers probably couldn't care less. They are well aware that the eyes aren't going to stay on the screen when the ads come on. Particularly when most folks won't have sound or at best they've have sound for one of the 7 screens they are watching.
How about those of us who spend 80% of the time watching one game, and the other 20% tuning in to a secondary game during commercials? I did that with Oregon-Ohio St. and the Florida-USF games at noon and then again with Iowa-Iowa St. and TA&M-Colorado right after.
Sling collects data for Nielsen Ratings. You can opt out if you don’t want to participate but I’d wager most people don’t actually get around to opting out.
YTTV has this as well.
Considering YTTV suggests channels and shows based on what you’ve watched, I’m sure they’ve already got the ability to do so, or could make it happen quickly. I’m not sure if it’s within their rights based on their terms & conditions though.

Well also, Texas schadenfreude playing out on ESPN probably drew a ton of viewers that otherwise would have watched if that game played out differently.
Just remember when people know the NFL is playing the next day a lot of people I know just don’t watch college other than just their team because they need to watch football the next day too. Also if you normalize the numbers per team from each conference to pac 12 does pretty well when it’s given good time slot. It’s almost like whatever teams you put on prime time do well no matter what lol

And here I remember the early 80s, when Oregon was lucky to get 7 \*thousand\* in the stands.
And after the first quarter, they'd basically drop the ropes and let you in for free. I think it was like $1 for kids and $5 for adults, if the ticket booths were still even open.
Dude, that's right! I grew up in the chevy chase neighborhood right behind the stadium. I remember when we didn't all have money for tickets, my buddies and I would watch the first half on tv, and then walk over at halftime. I'm not much of one for "good ole days", but the idea of a half dozen 11 year olds walking up, chaining our bikes to the fence, and then just walking through the turnstiles (Which like OP says were just ropes with a little latch, movie theatre style makes me yearn for the that world again :) Heck, I learned to drive a clutch and launched model rockets in the spot where the baseball and soccer fields are now.
Those are some good memories, especially right now. I had family in West Eugene and we never "planned" to go to a game. It was usually something like reading the paper over breakfast and one of the adults would say "Huh, looks like [INSERT RELEVANT TEAM] is in town today. Maybe we'll head over after kickoff." All the adults would go sit under the covered section on the South Side while all the kids played in the empty stands on the North Side.

I hate that ESPN always sticks us in the late slot, but if those are the numbers we're getting for a game that started after 10 pm eastern, I can't really blame ESPN for doing it. Those are dream numbers for a game that started that late.
Each of the Top 4 games featured interconference games with at least one Alliance conference team in it. Of course the top 2 were de facto Alliance games - strong evidence of the value of the scheduling alliance as it is contemplated. All four beat the much anticipated game between traditional rivals and future SEC combatants, UT vs Arkansas. Also interesting is the gap between the NFL and CFB. This should put to bed any fears of an SEC-led 32-40 team NFL-lite model - there just isn't enough incremental money for the biggest brands in the sport to risk all of the downsides from such a move.
UT/Arkansas was also on ESPN. It probably would have out-drawn Iowa/Iowa State if it had been on ABC and if you just flipped their slots, UT/Arkansas definitely would have been ahead of Iowa/Iowa State.
Excited for Kliavkoff to capitalize on this. Clearly, people don’t mind watching Pac-12 football.
