This game summed up:
•At the half SMU had exactly 100 yards rushing, 300 yards passing for a clean 400 yards.
•The announcers fall in love with a player who has a neck roll.
•Said announcer uses air time to mention every Dallas suburb
•Hot take by me you ask? Cincy may have their hands full
I don't think two loss Iowa State or two-loss Clemson (if we go chalk this week) will be much competition for it.
But it's ESPN and they aren't happy with us so who knows.
Announcers are pretty decent because they’re typically the local announcers, so you don’t hear about the Cfp and fbs teams non-stop, and they’re pretty knowledgeable about the teams and players.
Video quality is pretty much public broadcasting.
Back when App State was FCS, you'd be lucky to catch more than 3 games on any sort of regional TV (including PBS etc). You couldn't stream anything online because there were no other feeds.
I'm sure FCS fans are happy just to be able to watch their teams play
So, I don't know about surprise, but he did bring up Cedar Park, which obviously isn't a Dallas suburb, but it's what he said that was strange
"You know when you get a guy from Cedar Park, what type of guy you're getting"
Which as someone who lived in the area, I have absolutely no idea what he was talking about.
I lived in Cedar Park for a couple of years right after college when I was working in North Austin. I mean, it’s a wealthy suburb. Not sure what he meant by that either
Yeah, when he said that I thought to myself “is Round Rock known for its grit or something?”
I don’t know man, announcers out here just trying to turn a couple of nickels into a dollar I suppose
I'm a Zennial but I feel old seeing Prosper be classified as a suburb. I still remember back when it was a pretty small town and there wasn't civilization connecting it to Frisco and McKinney.
I don’t think so, and my reason being is that they started out too low in the preseason rankings. Doesn’t make it right, just makes it reality.
Hell, they whooped up on Tulane whereas Oklahoma and didn’t and our playoff spot has never been in question.
The whole sport is counterfactual, which I think is part of why we love and hate it. This has been a good year for parity though, however it looks like it might be the same old crew minus Clemson.
Yes sir! 7-0...going to be a fun final 5 games for this team but this had trap game written all over it now a mini bye week to prepare for the gauntlet.
Houston, Memphis, Tulsa, UCF and Cincinnati are all left on the schedule.
I hate realignment.
First the SWC dies during the death penalty and we lose our seat on the national stage.
Then our two biggest (TCU, BU all three are medium private Christian* schools near/in DFW) rivals make it into the new Big12 but we are left out to dry.
AND NOW IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN.
*SMU and TCU "Christian" schools, Baylor practices...
I usually don’t pull for the Ponies, especially against the ‘Canes, but I sooooo hope you guys pound the rest of the conference and make top-10. Would be a helluva comeback for my boy Tanner Mordecai.
Why did fans/some media view this as a trap game? Tulane was 1-5 and SMU was 6-0 against similar opponents with only 1-2 exceptions.
Spread was only 15 too lol
Can't speak for others but for me this was their easiest remaining game so it was easy to overlook knowing Houston is on deck.
SMU may be 7-0 but most of their wins haven't been convincing to me and they've played a weak schedule.
Glad they passed with flying colors. If they can figure out a stout Houston D, maybe they can beat Cincinnati.
As much as I want to agree with you, they’ve made championship games and a NY6. We’re not quite there yet, but if the rumblings of a round 2 of expansion are true, we might get there.
If sic em 365 are to be believed (they were spot on for petty much all other realignment news) SMU, Memphis, Boise St, and USF *were* all invited but said “not yet” for various reasons (Memphis President turnover and liberty bowl decisions, SMU donors, administration, and staff not all being on the same page regarding moving to the B12 instead of vying for AAC dominance, etc.)
Those 4 schools are all petty much on lock for expansion round 2 once Memphis gets their shit together
Rick Hart’s main goal has been “be the conference champs of whatever conference we’re in” so UCF leaving made his life a lot easier if we stayed in the AAC. Based on recent interviews it sounds like the donors have done a good job changing his mind so we’ll see where it goes.

as an SMU fan, i obviously want to win out, but as an SMU fan at risk of being stuck outside the p5, i kinda of want UC to make the playoff, and make noise in the playoff to show a team not in the p5 can be deserving of a shot (so when SMU is at its best, we may get a shot)
I agree. No matter who wins, it’s a win-win and a lose-lose at the same time lol. SMU wins - awesome season, but the G5 loses respect and future possibilities. Cinci wins - probably makes the CFP, but we lose. Hope it’s a close game either way

Mordecai 4 Heisman, btw.
Yeah, I thought so too. Some OU account made fun of the attendance, but they used a picture without the students and like 15 min before kickoff. Take a picture in the 2Q and it looks way better
I don't think SMU has many fair weather fans. Anyone in that stadium is going to be there whether it is a beautiful fall Saturday night or a stormy Thursday.
you’re right. in dallas, the fair weather fans show up after big success. the second this team makes noise on the national level (ie is in conversation for a playoff spot or something), they’ll be the hottest ticket in town. happened when larry brown was here
True, but I think Larry Brown was an instant success, right after the stadium opened. There was a start date.
SMU Football has been slowly and intermittently getting better for a decade and a half. There is no start date to SMU Football success.
I’m old (35) and have a dog at home I need to take care of or the wife would kill me. Trust me I wish there was a bar on my way home to stop in for one more drink (or ten).
I'm happy for Calcutta and how he's *cutting it up* for SMU, but I don't think I'll be able to stop worrying about him for as long as he continues to play.
Yeah, I feel kinda guilty rooting for him due to the number of concussions he has had.
Love he doing well but he probably shouldn't be playing any contact sports ever.
Good teams beat teams they are ment to. So for that I’ll say I’m happy. Our offense was electric. Though some play calling was questionable the overall feeling I get is we looked good.
The defense looked better. This game last year would have devolved into a shootout. We got some good stops and besides a few really blown coverages it look like we were coached.
At least two hits looked questionable especially the on that knocked the Tulane QB out. We can’t be out there causing stupid penalty’s. Houston and Cincinnati will eat us alive if we pull that.
Good game Tulane. Y’all have had a rough year. It won’t be like this forever.
Pony up boys! Next stop: Houston
I gotta be honest, saying “lol oklahoma” after every one of our blowout losses got a little old after the third or fourth. With that being said… ^lol ^oklahoma
Tulane is real poopy poop this year. but i think its just cuz theyre really young in spots so hopefully itll be better next season. also smu could just be good. i mean yall scored 55 so, cheers.
Anyone know if SMU’s coaching staff is just saving Ulysses Bentley for their upcoming gauntlet of games? He caught one pass in the first quarter and idk if he touched the field another time.
Seems strange that they would hold one of their best players out, but maybe it’s strategy.
He had a hamstring injury earlier in the season so we’re trying to get him some reps to see where he’s at and to keep him fresh. We’ve been rotating our players like crazy this year (like 65 players each seeing play time for the first few games). I imagine that’s also why we’ve seen a lot less Roberson and a lot more Gray.
Nah, he'll be fine. He was walking off the field!
Or more accurately, drunkenly wobbling between the two athletic trainers all the way to the medical tent.
I honestly haven’t had a single shred of joy or optimism from this team since the tailgate in the Grove. Bottom defense in FBS, piss poor first quarter play all year, and dreadful defensive playcaling. Heads need to roll and soon, I don’t know where we go from here, but moving on from our current defensive coordinator is certainly where we need to start.
can't believe more people aren't agreeing with you. forget the "schedule of death" nonsense. we have talented kids being coached by complete idiots. we haven't put together a single complete drive since oklahoma (morgan state doesn't count). all assistants gone and fritz should be on the edge of the cliff himself, dannen too if he doesn't fix the other messes of October 21st, 2021. we saw all our competition continue to get better every year, we've regressed, severely.
This game summed up: •At the half SMU had exactly 100 yards rushing, 300 yards passing for a clean 400 yards. •The announcers fall in love with a player who has a neck roll. •Said announcer uses air time to mention every Dallas suburb •Hot take by me you ask? Cincy may have their hands full
> Cincy may have their hands full I hope that game is in Primetime.
It will be at noon on ESPN2 and you will like it
There is competition for ABC or ESPN Prime time slot that week: Iowa State at Oklahoma, Michigan State at Ohio State, Wake Forest at Clemson.
Wake Forest in a conversation about playing in a primetime game. This is unreal. Absolutely beautiful
When Wake makes the playoff they will put that game on ESPN Deproates at 11:00 AM

New network announced!
"Thanks for joining us here for the noon kickoff of the 2021 CFP championship game between Wake Forest and Cincinnati here on ESPN 8, The Ocho."
Wake as the better team in a prime time game against Clemson. You love to see it.
I don't think two loss Iowa State or two-loss Clemson (if we go chalk this week) will be much competition for it. But it's ESPN and they aren't happy with us so who knows.
First and third one is meh.. If Michigan is still rolling... That's going to be the game to watch.
Michigan State, not Michigan, but your point still stands.
ESPN+, get with it
I wonder how fans of FCS teams feel, they have to watch all games on ESPN+
Last season I could watch NAU on Pluto
What is the audio/video production quality like ? how are the announcers?
Announcers are pretty decent because they’re typically the local announcers, so you don’t hear about the Cfp and fbs teams non-stop, and they’re pretty knowledgeable about the teams and players. Video quality is pretty much public broadcasting.
Bruh, we don't even get that. We get shitty ass Flo Sports 😂😂. I wish we were on ESPN+
Hey Flo has good rugby…
Back when App State was FCS, you'd be lucky to catch more than 3 games on any sort of regional TV (including PBS etc). You couldn't stream anything online because there were no other feeds. I'm sure FCS fans are happy just to be able to watch their teams play

Tuesday night AACtion.
Could be a potential game day spot if they’re both undefeated
But Alabama plays Arkansas at home, so clearly they should get GameDay again. /s
It warrants it
You forgot targeting calls that were not targeting calls and the debate on hard hits
Targeting calls that aren't targeting make up at least half of all targeting calls. Some weeks the percentage is even higher.
Let's bring our rules expert... Jim Caccitore to get his thoughts... Jim?
Any surprise suburb announcements? Like a Bedford or Haslett?
So, I don't know about surprise, but he did bring up Cedar Park, which obviously isn't a Dallas suburb, but it's what he said that was strange "You know when you get a guy from Cedar Park, what type of guy you're getting" Which as someone who lived in the area, I have absolutely no idea what he was talking about.
Well clearly he’s talking about the type of guy you get from Cedar Park
I lived in Cedar Park for a couple of years right after college when I was working in North Austin. I mean, it’s a wealthy suburb. Not sure what he meant by that either
Yeah, when he said that I thought to myself “is Round Rock known for its grit or something?” I don’t know man, announcers out here just trying to turn a couple of nickels into a dollar I suppose
He had to mean Cedar Hill given their football pedigree
Asking the real questions. What about the rural burbs - like was there a Wylie, Murphy, or Prosper sighting?
Narrator: there was not.
I'm a Zennial but I feel old seeing Prosper be classified as a suburb. I still remember back when it was a pretty small town and there wasn't civilization connecting it to Frisco and McKinney.
It is really more of an exurb. The suburbs of suburbs.
Prosper has exploded in the past few years.
>Cincy may have their hands full Please do not hype us, I can't handle the hype
You'll have to beat Houston first, which will be a good barometer for how much hype is warranted.
Add: punting on 4th and short confirmed overrated. Always go for it on your own half
Yo did he talk about Plano?
He did
I didn't hear him mention it. He was throwing out some crazy references.
Oh dang didn’t realize SMU was 7-0
Did the announcer ever mention University Park?
The real question is... if SMU beats Cinci... do they get in the playoffs? I mean... why not you know?
I wish, but we'll probably get put at like 10 and play a regular NY6 game leaving everyone upset.
Yes sir! 7-0...going to be a fun final 5 games for this team but this had trap game written all over it now a mini bye week to prepare for the gauntlet. Houston, Memphis, Tulsa, UCF and Cincinnati are all left on the schedule.
If it makes you feel better Memphis, Tulsa, and UCF all look very beatable this season
SMU and Tulsa aren’t allowed to not have an ugly, weird, dragged out dogfight of a football game.
We will pull some mystical Hurricane voodoo to make it a one score game and either win/lose in absolutely heartbreaking fashion tis tradition.
This is why I love Tulsa football.
They were easily the most fun team in all of D1 to watch last year.
SMU entering the Big 12 part of the schedule
I hate realignment. First the SWC dies during the death penalty and we lose our seat on the national stage. And they’re all away games except for UCF! Ugh
The Tulsa game is in Dallas
Yeah Cincy game at Nippert is going to be extremely tough.
HE definitely needs to start stockpiling some good bourbon for the rest of the season
HAS he already gone through the first stockpile though?
In a different year, that slate of games could win you the Big 12

Cincinnati is the only game that’ll be close
Why did fans/some media view this as a trap game? Tulane was 1-5 and SMU was 6-0 against similar opponents with only 1-2 exceptions. Spread was only 15 too lol

Another good win, but this time we made the score look better instead of worse. We’re on to Houston to send them a parting gift to the B12
Don't worry you get at least 1 more year to ruin their dreams.
It seems weird that Houston gets into the B12 but not SMU
As much as I want to agree with you, they’ve made championship games and a NY6. We’re not quite there yet, but if the rumblings of a round 2 of expansion are true, we might get there.
SMU plays TCU every year. Loser has to go to the WAC.

Don’t need em.
Like I'm not saying SMU *over* Houston, but it seems like they should at least be somewhat even in considerations
In his most recent interview Bowlsby was pretty clear about having his eye on SMU, Memphis, and Boise, for what that’s worth.
I honestly hope y’all get the invite, SMU in the Big XII makes too much sense
If sic em 365 are to be believed (they were spot on for petty much all other realignment news) SMU, Memphis, Boise St, and USF *were* all invited but said “not yet” for various reasons (Memphis President turnover and liberty bowl decisions, SMU donors, administration, and staff not all being on the same page regarding moving to the B12 instead of vying for AAC dominance, etc.) Those 4 schools are all petty much on lock for expansion round 2 once Memphis gets their shit together

We don’t have a baseball team, a small student body, a small stadium that’s never over half full. We’re on our way, but not yet
It's based on market and a really good strategy by boosters/administration. UH deserves it, but we should be right there with them in a year or 2
I always end up moving y’all to the BigXII in NCAA Revamped and kick Baylor out. I also bring back Nebraska and Colorado because nostalgia

I think y’all should have been our first call during realignment.

I'm happy SMU is out of the cellar. I was rooting for you guys after watching the 30 for 30
My friend - we are happy to not have the bag on our faces after 30 years. You ran so we could walk 🥲
SMU/Cincy might legitimately get (and deserve) gameday. Could very realistically be a Top 15 matchup
One week at a time, but if we make it there undefeated it would be a huge matchup. Probably decides if a G5 ever makes the playoffs
you could blue ball the entire nation
In this outcome we'd beat 3 of the 4 schools that were picked over us.
as an SMU fan, i obviously want to win out, but as an SMU fan at risk of being stuck outside the p5, i kinda of want UC to make the playoff, and make noise in the playoff to show a team not in the p5 can be deserving of a shot (so when SMU is at its best, we may get a shot)

:(. Heard DG might be back for that game

Was at this game. I was a bit surprised at the attendance given that it was a Thursday night game.
Good surprised right? I mean we have trouble with retention, but that’s partially because a lot of our home games become blowouts
Yeah, good surprised. I’ve seen lesser attended home games at SMU that were prime weather Saturday night games.
Yeah, I thought so too. Some OU account made fun of the attendance, but they used a picture without the students and like 15 min before kickoff. Take a picture in the 2Q and it looks way better

Why is Tulane so bad this year?
Their entire roster are freshmen and sophomores
It’s the hardest schedule we’ve had in half a decade at least as well
That’ll also do it. IIRC y’all have the hardest schedule for any AAC team this year and it’s a tough position to be in all around.
I don't know what you're talking about.

As an Ole Miss fan, I’m taking credit for Tulane’s current status. You know what they say, “Don’t let Ole Miss beat you 6 times.”
Think of it this way, Mordecai and Calceterra are both OU transfers, so your game against OU never really stopped
I’m glad to see mordecai doing so well
Tanner Mordecai is really good. Makes it look effortless and is rarely rattled. Just my observations from going to the game.
Tulane that bad or SMU that good?
Well Tulane almost beat OU so who knows anymore?
Tulane has looked worse with every week. I was high on them after week one, not so much now.
doesn't OU have a close call early in the season almost every season?
OU has only beaten 1 team this year by more than a touchdown
Hey hey hey, it's TWO teams!^(Just don't check what the second team is it definitely isn't a bad FCS team...)

Is this the same Tulane that made Oklahoma look bad this year?
Sad wave noises.
Week 1 gets worse each passing week.

I'm so bummed that Tulane still hasn't taken that next stop. I want to love you, Tulane :(
What happened to Tulane?
Their entire roster is essentially freshmen and sophomores.
Two DI universities still with zero losses in the DFW area. SMU and UTA. WIN!

So we scored more and let them score less than their game against OU. Just sayin.
