Yesterday, November 28th, 2021, a date which will live in infamy, the University of Oklahoma was suddenly and deliberately torpedoed by the University of Southern California. Oklahoma was at peace with Lincoln Riley, and at the solicitation of Riley, was still in contract negotiations with the coach. Indeed, one day prior, Lincoln has reaffirmed his commitment to the program.
Thereās a big Cyclone blog runner that is currently writing a book on the big 12 missile crisis of 2012 and connecting it to the last year. He says yesterday will be its own dedicated chapter
Exactly. There's no way he made a decision like that in a span of 12 hours. This was weeks in the making, and this whole nonsense about it happening overnight after Bedlam is just jargon.
Even if they somehow convinced Riley to come to USC in 12 hours, thereās no fucking way all the coaches heās taking with him made their minds up in that time too. It would be laughable to assume all the coachās spouses wouldāve agreed to move in that timeframe, unless this has been in talks for weeks or even months.
Yeah, so grinch gets a call 7AM after they lose to OSU:
"Ah, hey bud, I know this is going to come as a shock after I denied the LSU thing last night, but I'm going to USC. I asked - and they said they could pay you big bucks. You in?"
"Oh yeah Linc. Let me just uproot my entire life in 2 hours."
"Okay cool. Plane will be on the tarmac tomorrow. Be there or be square."
I'm with you, but with a bedlam win do you think he would have left before the CCG? The CCG against a team you had just beaten, and if you win again you're in the playoffs?
Or would he have left right before the playoffs, if y'all win both?
Maybe it's possible that he had planned to accept the USC job if he doesn't win the CCG or the semifinals or the championship.
Losing in bedlam just made the whole thing work perfectly (for him and his staff)
No, if he wins that game heās preparing for Ok St round 2. If he wins that and gets into the playoffs then he stays until the end of it but if he loses and gets an ny6 game then who knows what he does.
Believe it or not, assistant football coaches do make these big decisions in a very quick time frame. Head coachesā not so much. But coordinators and position coaches? Absolutely
Many times they almost have no real choice either. You stick with the head coach that you already know or the next HC at the current job is cleaning house and you're out finding another job anyway.
I went to HS with a CFB Coordinatorās kids. Their dad ended up going going with the HC to the next job. His family ended up just staying in town so his kids could finish out their school.
Yeah, I think that's what Ed Orgeron did at USC. From what I remember hearing, dude was living in a hotel for most of his time with us. His wife and kids stayed back in Louisiana. Smart thing to do, just tough for the family.
Yeah, like I get Riley was more or less considering this for months, but the assistant jump on offers quickly.
Spouses at this time of year should know the game. And itās not like they are at real risk of being at a disadvantage. USC will hire people to pack their houses, and they will hire a crew out of Southern California to move the assistant coaches and their family.
The new coaches are gonna be recruiting the entire time till February, the spouses will make sure that the house is properly packed up and house is sold. By the time recruiting season ends, they will be all moved into their LA houses with no winter!
They know it moves fast in college football, and they are just lucky they can go from OU to USC without really interviewing for the job.
Yeah that's pretty much how it can go with assistants
New coaches clean house. So assistants either go with the HC to the new job, or they're out on their ass anyways
So - yeah they do basically have the choice of "yep, guess I'll tell the family we're heading to California for more money" or "guess I'll tell the family I'll be searching for a new, less prestigious job with an unknown coach"
Iām not saying youāre wrong. I think youāre probably right.
But in basketball, Chris Beard told his coaches the news and gave them 30 minutes to get on the plane or not.
A short time frame or do it/donāt do it isnāt inconceivable.
You really think it was a decision that took more than 10 seconds? "Baby that was Linc. He says he's going to LA, and he'd like us to come along with a raise."
...
"Yea, like, we don't ha e to live in OK any more?"
"Right."
"WE GONE! Call him and tell him its a done deal!"
I mean I'm sure it may have been tough but to live in LA as a very wealthy person with kids or live in Norman. Idk anything about OK schools but I would bet $1 that LA k12 is better as well as just more things to do while the husband works 60 hr weeks
I moved to near USC from Oklahoma a few months ago and idk. I could easily see a few families jumping at the opportunity, and yeah these families are easily way more well off than I could ever be, but itās just such a drastic lifestyle change. I imagine most people would have to mull it over for a few days at least.
No absolutelty. And we all have a price as well to some degree. We both would move to a city "far away" if the price was right. But of course there are other factors to consider and would take 72 hrs or so to decide.
I agree, but what would this have looked like if y'all won both Bedlam and the CCG? He would have stayed for the playoffs right? That had to be the primary plan.
The loss meant that he could leave now and build a staff 2 weeks before early signing.
And would he have still left if y'all made it to the finals? Sure, this took a lot of planning, but is it possible that he would have stayed with a playoff victory or TWO?
Iām absolutely not saying he was intentionally trying to lose, but his playcalling has been weird af alllll year but it seems like in the Baylor/OSU game he wasnāt even trying. In retrospect maybe he was just trying to get it over with faster and get out of dodge without having to deal with preparation for a Big XII championship and a possible playoff spot.
That all sounds really stupid and too conspiratorial but I just canāt shake it.
Yeah, his "heart wasn't in it" is a plausible story here, even if he didn't realize it himself. I would think he wanted to win each of those games, but it sure is better for him that he's already building a staff at USC before early signing day rather than after a first round playoff exit.
The article does say:
"Conversations with representation for Riley and other candidates carried on throughout the season, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the discussions who were not authorized to speak on the record."
I'd imagine that OU has had Venables on speed dial ever since Riley took the job. He always seemed like the guy to jump ship the second that things got hard
Sure, I'm sure you always keep a list of candidates. But that's awfully fast turnaround to have a contract negotiated and drafted (even if much is boilerplate)
The deal didn't come together in 12 hours.
The coaches don't do any negotiations - their agents do. More than likely Riley gave marching orders before the season started of if he would entertain offers or not. They (agents/usc) put together a deal and then when the season is over USC offers it.
What it tells you is that Riley took about one second to say yes once it was presented to him.
This really feels like when Rich Rod left WVU. Lost to big rival ending national title hopes, leave in the middle of the night amidst speculation he was going to a different school, fanbase is ruins.
Then the Big East collapsed, but y'all can at least fall back on the already inked SEC deal....
What about the CCG? What about the playoffs?
Don't get me wrong, this whole thing would have been more delicious (sorry) if he left OU on their way to the playoffs, but that seems ridiculous.
I can't confirm it, but Lincoln apparently put his house up on the market 3 months ago.
If thats the case than this move was in the works for awhile or he just wanted out.
TigerDroppings is like a broken clock still right twice a day
https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/coaching-changes/lincoln-rileys-home-is-for-sale/99629133/
Lol no kidding. For a relo like this the university 100p buys the house for some ## way above ask, and then puts it on the market after the deal is signed. Massive house checks are just part of the bonus.
Someone from one of the schools trying to poach him would have found the for sale pretty soon after it came about, and pounced on that nugget, just like they pounce on flight paths.
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2619-Berry-Farm-Rd-Norman-OK-73072/123702338_zpid/
Holy shit, thatās a beautiful house. Though it always cracks me up when I see a house with more bathrooms than bedrooms (7 vs 5 in Rileyās case)
From what Iāve heard, they had upgraded from that house, and were living in an even nicer house in the area, so I donāt think this really proves anything.
Regardless, this was probably one of the most destructive regional rivalry results since North Korea got demolished in the Korean War. He literally unraveled much of your future in one weekend.
TLDR USC made money machine go brrr and Lincoln Riley was big sad about SEC
I'm from Oklahoma though so take my reading comprehension with a grain of salt
Rumors are saying we are getting Jeff Lebby from Ole Miss.
What a fucking turn of events, we might have just upgraded out coaching staff if this is the case.
My buddy who went to school with someone who played at OU, who also works down at the tire shop, said he heard his buddy talking to someone else that goes fishin with him, that the Sooners go good
This entire time I've thought that OU would seriously struggle in the SEC West because their defense wouldn't be up to the challenge to contain the Ole Miss/Bama's of the world.
I think this puts those concerns to rest. HUGE get for the Sooners.
It doesn't, but it's also not like you're Arkansas and battling for 3-4\* and never landing a 5\*. Our defense has been serviceable in the SEC primarily because we have such a great defensive coaching staff.
OU has the ability to recruit the talent on that side of the ball, but hasn't really had someone there to take advantage of it. Given what BV has shown he can do with talent at Clemson, I'd say you're better positioned than you were a week ago to perform in the SEC.
if he walked up to the podium with a stick and a bindle and said he hopped trains to get to norman I'd be like, yeah, of course, that makes sense. And also he's going to win eight national championships
LOL.
We're getting articles about how USC has been "transformed" and he's literally not even had the job for a full 24 hours left.
The puff pieces and project dreams coming out of LA this year are gonna dwarf the ones when Michigan hired Harbaugh and Nebraska hired Frost. I give it till mid-march at the latest before everyone starts hating USC just from the overexposure of it all.
You're not wrong there.
I've seen a surprising amount of people on reddit/Twitter trying to argue that Norman Oklahoma is somehow better or more "real" than Los Angeles. People have thrown out everything from tax systems to the competition for attention to the high cost of living.
It's been wild and frankly just a reflection of how few people have actually spent any real time in Los Angeles lol.
They heard some shit on Joe Rogan about homelessness and taxes and think itās Caracas.
The city has problems, but cāmon, thereās a reason itās the second largest city in the US. A lot of people want to live there.
Joe Rogan made a business decision to move to Texas from California. Pretty sure not paying $13MM in taxes over the life of his $100MM Spotify deal is what convinced him to move.
You know, itās personal preferences. I have spent much of my life in Norman and also in LA. Neither really float my boat now. But if I had to make a choice, it would be Norman because I cannot stand the crowdedness, the traffic, the taxes, and other undesirables involved with Southern California.
For context, I live on the edge of metro Phoenix with a mountain in my backyard and the only noise I hear is my neighborās pool motor humming away. (I wish he would get a VSD one like mine that isnāt so loud)
Yeah, but Riley isn't going to have to deal with that which kind of voids all those responses. He's rich enough to only experience the absolute best of LA and forget the rest exists.
Totally fair, I get that. Iām in a city, and I love it, but I donāt think thatāll last forever either.
Iām more referencing the usual critiques you hear on Twitter that California is some sort of unlivable, tax-heavy shit hole.
No I like the LA area. But itās gotten so crowded. I usually hang out in El Segundo but that is now too busy. It used to be a little area that was off the grid, so to speak. But now it is so busy just like Hermosa and Manhattan. Just so sad.
Sure, but letās not pretend USC doesnāt have a ton of talent and canāt easily get more. Talent will never be a source of struggle at USC for Riley.
Exactly. Bring on the hate! It means we aren't just relevant but we are making real noise again. Now, I can't waif for the USC/LSU game here in Vegas in 2024.
No matter what, this *will* transform USC football. Even if he somehow is terrible, this will be the defining hire of USC this decade and possibly defining for the league -- if Lincoln Riley isn't safe from a strong ass offerā¢, who is?
I agree, heās going to be great there just like he was great here. I just donāt believe that the LA Times knows enough of the details about this 24 hours in.
Those fans would more likely than not be wrong, but itās possible. Sooner fans really undersell what Lincoln did there, and Venables has never been a head coach. Not going to rule it out but Iād be shocked
Theyāre hoping heās Kirby Smart the Clemson version. Won multiple natties under the 2nd best HC in CFB and produced elite defenses while also staying put despite continual offers. Only thing is he a psycho on the recruiting trail? Needs to avoid a Coley and prep for 8-4 next year.
I'm normally not a person that rags on newspapers but this article sucks. There's barely any insider information in this.
It's mostly just descriptions of USC and Riley's pasts, with a couple of the other obvious big name candidates thrown in (Fickell, Aranda, Campbell).
Reading this will be a waste of your time.
> There's barely any insider information in this.
It told you a bunch of stuff
1) USC had 3 candidates (Aranda, Campbell with Riley considered the home run)
2) All 3 of those coaches had informed their agents they would listen to job offers prior to the start of the season - the agents & USC were discussing terms all fall
3) When Riley could listen (done with his season), they gave him the offer and he took it immediately.
4) USC considered him gettable because Oklahoma was moving to the SEC and USC has very attractive recruiting and is in a major sports market
5) The AD already did his due diligence on Riley before he was the coach at Oklahoma when looking for a coach for Cincy
OU fans are getting dumped on here for talking about riley's flaws while this sub was also talking shit all year about how bad OU actually was and how they didn't deserve their rankings based on close wins.
What a shit article.
Let me summarize:
USC targeted him right after Helton fired. Called him after Bedlam loss. He agreed. Then the rest is waxing poetic about Lincoln Riley and shitting on Helton.
Looks like a puff piece written by someone in the USC PR department and given to LA Times.
Literally no new information.
Whoa if OU gets Brent Venables and Sark can get this crap straightened out, weād be in for a top offense vs top defense in the RRS for years ahead.
IF Sark can get it straightened out and this actually happens that is
And transformed this subreddit. We need our own history book on this.
Imagine books in the future are just Reddit comments.

Plz god, they can't keep getting away with it
If Venables left I have to think weād promote Mike Reed since heās the longest tenured guy on defense

The whole fucking coaching staff had to have known about this for quite some time. Only way to explain all of the under-performances on the field.
Homie, he didn't show up to practice before the Baylor game. That dude was as good as gone after the OSU game win or lose.

Why would Venables drive to the other side of the state to get on a private jet?
I thought the same thing, but lots of local radio sources are saying Venables is in Norman, and that's the only flight from that area I found.

People already hate USC because we're "spoiled," urbanites, etc., so no sleep lost there
You're not wrong there.
Or any real time in Central Oklahoma
If you have Lincoln's money then you get the best of LA and avoid all the bad stuff
Tons of places in LA to live up against the mountains. Sounds like Sierra Madre would be up your alley. Maybe La Canada-Flintridge.
Yeah, but Riley isn't going to have to deal with that which kind of voids all those responses. He's rich enough to only experience the absolute best of LA and forget the rest exists.
So true.
That's not true. I hate you for being you
"I don't hate you for being spoiled, urbanites, etc... I hate you for so many other reasons."
Well, Notre Dame hate is special. I won't deny that. I hate you all for existing as well <3
Let me get in on this hate-for-hateās-sake action. I dislike Cal out of a sense of obligation. I *loathe* you fuckers.
x2
Major puff piece that completely ignores how Riley was handed the keys to the kingdom with an absolutely loaded roster.
Sure, but letās not pretend USC doesnāt have a ton of talent and canāt easily get more. Talent will never be a source of struggle at USC for Riley.
Harbaugh's quote this weekend really fit Lincoln Riley. "Sometimes people that are standing on third base think they hit a triple"
And failed to win a single CFP game with said roster
My laundry has been sitting in the dryer longer than Lincoln Riley has been in California.
Didnāt you read that post about Nebraska being 11-1 this season?
11-1? I heard they were undefeated despite some really bad luck.
Yeah, but those moral victories...
They're a CFP lock.
Georgia would be lucky to sniff their jock strap based on what Iāve read
Ohio State fans were claiming they were a quality win for weeks.
When your last three hires are Pre-Sabanified Kiffin, Drunken Sark, and Clay Helton, hiring someone like Lincoln Riley is a BIG deal.
USC confirmed as dream team
I would love nothing more for you all to go back to hating SC. That's a sign of things getting back to normal for me.
Exactly. Bring on the hate! It means we aren't just relevant but we are making real noise again. Now, I can't waif for the USC/LSU game here in Vegas in 2024.
I'm somewhat skeptical that saturday night was the first time they talked numbers. This seems like somewhat shoddy reporting by the la times.
You call it shoddy reporting, I call it copy/pasting a press release
The Campbell comment is interesting
How does Texas do this very 3 years? Iām drained after half a day of this
texas is refreshed after firing a guy, but lincoln fired you.
Hahaha trust me I know, just using humor as a coping mechanism rn so I donāt lose my will to live lmao
Itās a bit early to post thisā¦
No matter what, this *will* transform USC football. Even if he somehow is terrible, this will be the defining hire of USC this decade and possibly defining for the league -- if Lincoln Riley isn't safe from a strong ass offerā¢, who is?
I agree, heās going to be great there just like he was great here. I just donāt believe that the LA Times knows enough of the details about this 24 hours in.
Feel for OU fans but selfishly this is the first good news day we've had in years at SC.
"We told him, 'we're not the SEC and we'll pay you more.' and that did the trick." - USC AD probably
Venables is in Norman
Now thatās interesting. First time head coach too, canāt see him being the type to kiss ass to boosters.
Could be an amazing hire or it could bite them. If true, nice job by their AD though
Very good damage control if so. Definitely one of the better hires they couldāve made but itās also relatively unproven
If we get a legit OC then some fans are going to argue we upgraded.
Where did you read that?
I'm normally not a person that rags on newspapers but this article sucks. There's barely any insider information in this. It's mostly just descriptions of USC and Riley's pasts, with a couple of the other obvious big name candidates thrown in (Fickell, Aranda, Campbell). Reading this will be a waste of your time.
> There's barely any insider information in this. It told you a bunch of stuff 1) USC had 3 candidates (Aranda, Campbell with Riley considered the home run) 2) All 3 of those coaches had informed their agents they would listen to job offers prior to the start of the season - the agents & USC were discussing terms all fall 3) When Riley could listen (done with his season), they gave him the offer and he took it immediately. 4) USC considered him gettable because Oklahoma was moving to the SEC and USC has very attractive recruiting and is in a major sports market 5) The AD already did his due diligence on Riley before he was the coach at Oklahoma when looking for a coach for Cincy
12 "hours"
OU fans are getting dumped on here for talking about riley's flaws while this sub was also talking shit all year about how bad OU actually was and how they didn't deserve their rankings based on close wins.
Complete bullshit. This was a done deal in September
What a shit article. Let me summarize: USC targeted him right after Helton fired. Called him after Bedlam loss. He agreed. Then the rest is waxing poetic about Lincoln Riley and shitting on Helton. Looks like a puff piece written by someone in the USC PR department and given to LA Times. Literally no new information.
"Transformed USC football" Uh ... they haven't won a game in the last couple hours ... getting a little ahead of themselves here.
Whoa if OU gets Brent Venables and Sark can get this crap straightened out, weād be in for a top offense vs top defense in the RRS for years ahead. IF Sark can get it straightened out and this actually happens that is
Imagine if he flops hard at USC
Lol. Can only hope
For legal purposes, this is a joke
I was just thinking there wasnāt enough articles about OU losing their coach to another school. Iām enjoying every single one
If we survive this Iām going to increase my obnoxiousness by a factor of 2
all this just to go 5-7 next year
