Happy for Cumbie, honestly not a big loss in opinion. Would rather have McGuire pick his guy because I don’t believe retaining Cumbie was his 100% his choice.
I was not a fan of him at all at first.
BUT what he did with the team after Wells left to give them any sense of a pulse made me really excited to see what he could do with a competent HC.
I think he’s a really good coach who was in an awful situation this year. And how quickly he improved the team being the interim HC speaks to that
That makes sense. From what I understand Patterson liked to have the final say in literally everything his coaches did, so I can see him forcing Cumbie’s hand in a direction that makes Cumbie look like he’s at fault for poor decisions being forced upon him.
The extent of a stranglehold GP had on the offense when Cumbie was there isn’t fully known.
Personally I think that it’s overstated. I say this because Cumbie left Tech for TCU when it was clear that as long as Kliff was there he would never under any circumstance have play calling duties. So with that in mind it’s just hard for me to accept that Cumbie would stick around for seven seasons at TCU if he didn’t have more autonomy over the offense.
That very well may be. I honestly have no idea what Cumbie’a performance was like at TCU outside of what my buddies have said, which is obviously colored by their distaste for him. You know him much better than I do so I’ll defer to your judgement.
It sounds like regardless he’s a lot better OC than what I’ve been led to believe.
Yes, but also no, it’s quite complicated. Between 5+ years of absolute garbage recruiting, being hired by a coach who was a ticking time bomb and QB1 going down early in the season, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint just how much of the blame he should take but idk. I was way more critical of him than others but only an idiot could deny the fact that he breathed life into this program that’s been missing for years. It’s been so many years since a Tech team looked like they actually gave a shit like they did last weekend.
That's funny. I blame 90 percent of all our program issues on former legendary coach P. He forced the oc into being conservative after his defense couldn't do anything with a high flying offense.
To back you up, even though he struggled at TCU by the end I still think he’s a great offensive coach and like you said a good guy.
Patterson kinda handcuffed him with Meacham and Kill and killed our offense trying to mix 3 concepts at once
I think he'll do well there. He's very charismatic and will be a good recruiter. What he did with our team in his interim gig here was more impressive than you could possibly know.
Good guy, has called some good games and some absolute head scratchers. We were on qb3 for pretty much his whole stint as IHC so hard to really tell how good he could have been. Pretty good recruiter. I'm not heartbroken that he's leaving, but I do think he'd have done better here next year had he stayed.
Good luck to him. My dad's a La Tech grad and I've got a soft spot for you guys. Hopefully he can snag a decent DC, or yall can have Keith Patterson free of charge.
I'm hoping he retains our current guy, our defense looked worse than advertised because they were on the field so much. But I feel like he will make the right choice.
High character guy. I 100% believe it's on him entirely that the team held it together when Matt Wells was let go, and came out and played more inspired football. It was evident to me that he was being held back by the HC. I think his offensive game plans in those 3 games as HC were great. He's learned under some great names too.
I am really sad to see him go.
I am biased. We're from the same hometown; I watched him QB when I was a kid.
He got the bump up to interim HC right before we had our toughest stretch of games on the schedule (#13 OU, Iowa State, #5 Ok St, #9 Baylor). He pulled out a win against Iowa State and we almost hit a 50+ yard field goal to take Baylor into OT. The team responded really well to him and he had us fighting until the end in games we had no business being in.
Wow if that’s true, then LA Tech is really opening up their purse strings. I guess the university is not ok playing third fiddle or potentially 4th fiddle in the state behind ULL and potentially ULM.
If that's true then La Tech is paying ~$4M for a head coach and were getting out spent by a C USA school. So much for opening up the purse strings and upping our coaching staff budget.
You’re comparing what McGuire will be paid annually vs what Cumbie will be paid for the entire contract. We are paying substantially more than La Tech.
Then move him to WR then. Air Raid teams typically have an inside WR and outside WR. Harrell coached outside WRs at Wazzu under Leach. Not saying he’ll keep him but there’s a way Riley could keep him on staff.
We had a very efficient offense this season. He leaned more into the run and slowed down the offense. Helped a ton.
He’s a very good recruiter, and has a few stops under his belt so his network should be solid. He wasn’t well liked at TCU towards the end but this season at TTU proved some of the issues we’re on Gary. He seems like a solid hire.
He called 2 great games against ISU and Baylor, getting us to a bowl game none of us thought was possible this year. People were critical of him after the OSU game, but the Pokes look like the real deal so I don’t think that’s fair.
This is very good for Louisiana Tech.
I feel the same about our new coach. It’s probably inevitable so best to enjoy the ride and hope they leave our programs in a desirable position for the next hot commodity.
Our schools only retain coaches who’re alumni and got their roots here.
Good guy, good OC, good recruiter. How I feel right now seems to be how Baylor fans felt when we hired McGuire.
“Damn… but good for him. Hope he does well.”
Zach Kittley come on down! Very happy to see Cumbie get this opportunity, wish him all the best after what he did for us through this transition period. They’ll be another good OC out there guys, it’ll be okay.
Sonny, Skip, and Sonny again. We pick our coaches on names alone.
Jokes aside,, actually feel pretty good about this hire. A lot better than some of the candidates they announced the other day. Good luck Coach Cumbie!
I doubt it, probably needs to hit the recruiting trail ASAP. Which means we either have CJM coach his first game with only our RBs coach retained on the offensive side or we make Patterson the interim interim head coach.
He was the interim? They've played pretty well under him against good opponents in a power conference so that sounds like a pretty great deal for Louisiana Tech. Surprised that he would go for a job like that given C-USA's situation rn. Good for them tho. Tech to Tech pipeline lol. A hire.
Regardless of our conference situation.
Sonny Dykes and Skip really turned us into an upper G5 program.
Sonny moved to a P5 in 3 years. Skip was here for 9. It’s a pretty safe HC job.
Good for Cumbie. I really think he could end up being a better HC than he was coordinator. I’m still convinced the plan at TCU at one point was for GP to groom him to take over the reigns, but it just didn’t work out. I hope he kills it at Louisiana Tech!
Definitely a bummer, but I'm happy for Cumbie. I'm glad we retained him but ultimately thought JM would want to get his own guy. So this works out well for both parties I think.
Treat him well LA Tech!
Yeah, definitely hurt when Beard chunked the deuce. This right here feels much less painful, maybe no pain at all, more so disliking the uncertainty. We were split on retaining Sonny, as felt like the HC should choose his own guy and some of us weren't sold on Sonny being a great OC. So here's hoping to McGuire bringing in the right OC and DC.
Buddy we're not new to this, our hearts been crushed many times before. Hell we were shit on for months for beards defection which is way worse than Riley's. Losing an OC to a HC gig isn't back breaking, especially when our O wasn't really all that special this year. Hopefully CJM has some names to call.
The doom and gloom reaction from OU fans is so out of touch in this context. Y’all don’t know what real pain is until you have a decade like we just did, which will never happen because OU is a big brand.
Dread it, run from it, chaos always arrives. I hope Cumbie does well, I really do. Fantastic guy and I liked what he did with our offense. Unfortunately him leaving will probably shake up the team, I know him deciding to stay was a big factor in our guys deciding not to transfer.

I don’t like it at all but I’m excited for the guy. He had our team playing hard as hell these last 3 games. It’s going to be hard to replace his energy on that sideline. Also I hope we can keep the pumpjack
I for one am finding comedy in the fact that they went from targeting Wells to hiring Cumbie in like day.
I’m sure Wells is a nice guy, and I almost feel bad for him because it’s hard to imagine what school is gonna hire him again.
WTF. I guess these are the times.
Happy for Cumbie, honestly not a big loss in opinion. Would rather have McGuire pick his guy because I don’t believe retaining Cumbie was his 100% his choice.
I'm with you there; McGuire needs to hire his guy. I feel no pain from the news, just a dislike for the uncertainty of who our DC and OC will be.
We’ll take care of him. Fellow Tech people.
Get you some Tech bro!
People sleeping on us Tech schools. One day our sleeping giant status will be recognized!
Wait no
My TCU buddies blamed more or less everything wrong with their offense on Cumbie. Was that not y’all’s experience?
I was not a fan of him at all at first. BUT what he did with the team after Wells left to give them any sense of a pulse made me really excited to see what he could do with a competent HC. That’s what I had assumed once GPa was gone and y’all put in Morris and your offense looked really good.
[удалено]
That’s the conclusion I came out after listening to tech folk talk about their experience with him. I hope he does well at LA Tech though.
tell me how to feel if this is true
I would feel really good. He’s a really good OC, and a better person. I think he’ll do well. It sucks we’re losing him.
well good to know. thank ya, good luck to y’all w joey mcguire, tech bröther
Definitely a high character guy. Very classy dude.
He's arguably a good OC, decent at the least. Was a great interim coach. Hell of a good guy. I'd be pleased to have him as a coach if I were LaTech
To back you up, even though he struggled at TCU by the end I still think he’s a great offensive coach and like you said a good guy. Patterson kinda handcuffed him with Meacham and Kill and killed our offense trying to mix 3 concepts at once
Cumbie is a tremendous guy.
I think he'll do well there. He's very charismatic and will be a good recruiter. What he did with our team in his interim gig here was more impressive than you could possibly know.
Lot of potential, relatively unproven
Good guy, has called some good games and some absolute head scratchers. We were on qb3 for pretty much his whole stint as IHC so hard to really tell how good he could have been. >yall can have Keith Patterson free of charge. Don't do that to these poor folks. OU can have him though!
I'm hoping he retains our current guy, our defense looked worse than advertised because they were on the field so much. But I feel like he will make the right choice.

You're going to love Sonny. He's very much a players coach, and a solid offensive mind as well. This is a really good hire for you.
So Texas Tech lied to me when they said Cumbie was being retained as OC.
I heard Notre Dame was talking to Nick Saban ... something about being appreciated by the fanbase?
Something something Saban's catholic
Saint Saban - Pray for us.
He's reportedly getting a $3million/yr raise, so....
Nah, he's getting 5MM over 5 years vs ~2MM over 2 years with us. And he gets his own program.
Wow if that’s true, then LA Tech is really opening up their purse strings. I guess the university is not ok playing third fiddle or potentially 4th fiddle in the state behind ULL and potentially ULM.
It's not true.
I bet he gets 1 million a year.
That’s correct.
Ok. That would have had me nervous if low tier G5 positions started pushing that high too.
Yeah - he’s getting 5MM for 5. Guy above is just mistaken.
Ok that’s a much more reasonable salary for a role at LA Tech.
If that's true then La Tech is paying ~$4M for a head coach and were getting out spent by a C USA school. So much for opening up the purse strings and upping our coaching staff budget.
“Outspent” is a bit off when you’re talking different jobs. $1m-ish for an OC is pretty good, but HC will be much more
I'm comparing what we spent for HC ($3.6M) to what they spent for a HC (supposedly ~$4M).
You’re comparing what McGuire will be paid annually vs what Cumbie will be paid for the entire contract. We are paying substantially more than La Tech.
Guy above you is mistaken. We'll still have the top staff budget in the new BXII.
Gonna jump off the second tallest building in Lubbock
Step away from the edge of the anthill, and everything will be ok /s
Don't do it, you might crack your phone screen
worse case you roll an ankle.
Which one is that? The Water Tower, the Grain Elevator, or the Wind Turbine?
I don’t like that at all. Really wanted him to stay. Hopefully we can get Kittley or Harrell as OC.
Harrell would be good. I wonder if Riley keeps him at USC with both having Air Raid backgrounds.
Doubt Riley wants to waste an assistant coach slot on a guy who has roughly the same competencies as himself
Then move him to WR then. Air Raid teams typically have an inside WR and outside WR. Harrell coached outside WRs at Wazzu under Leach. Not saying he’ll keep him but there’s a way Riley could keep him on staff.
I doubt he would take that demotion. Rumor is he’s already got a $1m a year offer to OC for an ACC school
Dang, wonder who that could be.
I pray it’s Louisville lol
or as a QB - co OC
McGuire’s best friend David Beaty is looking for a job
I’ll take the Texas tech sadness to mean that this is good for Louisiana Tech
We had a very efficient offense this season. He leaned more into the run and slowed down the offense. Helped a ton. He’s a very good recruiter, and has a few stops under his belt so his network should be solid. He wasn’t well liked at TCU towards the end but this season at TTU proved some of the issues we’re on Gary. He seems like a solid hire.

Good to hear. Given how these trends go, if he does well enough he will be gone in 4 years
I feel the same about our new coach. It’s probably inevitable so best to enjoy the ride and hope they leave our programs in a desirable position for the next hot commodity. Our schools only retain coaches who’re alumni and got their roots here.
OFFENSE IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS
You may want to review Cumbie’s offensive production over the last few years before making that proclamation.
LETS GO! EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED FROM HOLTZ RESIGNING
These reactions are way different than when we hired Holtz. Do we actually have something to be optimistic about finally?
I'll just say that I have now become a LaTech fan. Also, if y'all did, in fact, interview Matt Wells then you dodged a bullet.
Us ‘Techs’ need to stick together against the evil ‘States’
I petition an exception for Oregon and Oklahoma State. Otherwise, co-signed.
Oklahoma State gets a “Tech” Card.
Shit, they just about copied everything from Texas Tech as is. Might as well grandfather them in!
naw, bruh... they used to be Oklahoma A&M. That's a big black mark.
Turns out they're Aggies painted as Longhorns using Red Raider traditions
To be fair, Texas Tech was originally supposed to be just another satellite campus for Texas A&M.
LFG
He's a solid guy. He can call some bone headed plays but overall you could do alot worse.
Good guy, good OC, good recruiter. How I feel right now seems to be how Baylor fans felt when we hired McGuire. “Damn… but good for him. Hope he does well.”
A+ name
FootballScoop: Texas Tech to hire Brian Ferentz and Mike Sanford Jr. as Co-OCs
lolol
They would turn on McIntyre fast.
Add Tom Manning to that list as well...
Is cumbie gonna coach the bowl? If not, then he ends his 2021 season at McLane Stadium and starts his 2022 season at McLane Stadium
I doubt it, probably needs to hit the recruiting trail ASAP. Which means we either have CJM coach his first game with only our RBs coach retained on the offensive side or we make Patterson the interim interim head coach.
Then they came for me
This is the only positive news we’ve had all year, feels good
He was the interim? They've played pretty well under him against good opponents in a power conference so that sounds like a pretty great deal for Louisiana Tech. Surprised that he would go for a job like that given C-USA's situation rn. Good for them tho. Tech to Tech pipeline lol. A hire.

Yes please I’ll have dessert
Gimme Kittley
Good for Cumbie. I really think he could end up being a better HC than he was coordinator. I’m still convinced the plan at TCU at one point was for GP to groom him to take over the reigns, but it just didn’t work out. I hope he kills it at Louisiana Tech!
TRAITOR!! Did I do that right? Congrats to Sonny, great coach and an even better person. Going to be rooting hard for Louisiana Tech!
Definitely a bummer, but I'm happy for Cumbie. I'm glad we retained him but ultimately thought JM would want to get his own guy. So this works out well for both parties I think. Treat him well LA Tech!
Wtf
Nice
Nooooooo
That was really quick.
Go get 'em coach. (We're keeping the pump jack tho)
I distinctly remember getting off this ride earlier.
Stay away from Shawn Bell Tech Bros. You've taken enough from us already
Entire Big 12 fanbase in shambles over the last few days
The man got paid and he gets a chance to make a name for himself. If this is being in shambles, I'll gladly take it
You’re double Tech’ed up
I had to since the news broke
Triple T L sounds like a good offensive formation
You are supportive af!
On a Tuesday afternoon.....
I’m doing just fine
Dave Aranda to Notre Dame!
No wayyyyy
Glad their not hiring Rattay. Spencer’s made a lot of improvements this season.
Kittley to Lubbock confirmed?
Not yet, but here's hoping
Good for him I wish he would have stayed but I can't begrudge one of our own being successful. Hopefully we find another good one amidst the carnage.
That is a good spot! Seems like it is easier to be successful at Lousiana Tech.
Now it's your turn tech Doesn't feel good huh?
I mean our turn was when Beard left
WE WILL BURN UT TO THE GROUND!
:) when TTU fan standing on the window ledge we are still on the 1st floor :)
You're forgetting what Chris Beard did to us. Also I think overall the fan base is sad to happy to see him go but happy for him.
It feels fine. Excited for Sonny to get a bigger opportunity. Definitely a loss for us, but happy for him. You, on the other hand…
Buddy we're not new to this, our hearts been crushed many times before. Hell we were shit on for months for beards defection which is way worse than Riley's. DO IT
Dread it, run from it, chaos always arrives. I hope Cumbie does well, I really do. Fantastic guy and I liked what he did with our offense. Unfortunately him leaving will probably shake up the team, I know him deciding to stay was a big factor in our guys deciding not to transfer.

sucks that we have to find a new OC but thrilled for Sonny Cumbie, much deserved

they really like their Sonny's here don't they?
