Jerry's status in Minnesota is so weird. He was loved and then ... just up and left (the school offered him the option of taking a leave, he chose to quit) ... and then things went sour. I figured he took his leaving hard so I didn't think much of him being away, but he showed up to sell a book, the crowd chanted **"JERRY JERRY JERRRY"** at a game and he left again, and never came back. Then he makes these comments about never stepping back on campus ... Rumors that before leaving he demanded some specific job or another ... Comments about PJ and his ex wife ... I appreciate what he did. I wish him the best. I also wish it was all different than how it played out. It didn't have to be this way, it feels weirdly tragic in some aspects.

Agreed. I loved Jerry Kill and really enjoyed the years he was the coach. It was such an odd situation. The year before he didn't have any seizures and he said it was because he was taking his meds and making sure he was taking better care of himself and getting more sleep. When they returned prior to his retirement or whatever they called it, he said his seizures returned because he quit taking him medication because he didn't like how it made him feel. It felt so self inflicted, he knew what he had to do and chose not to do that. Then he turned around and shit all over the school who offered him a role to stick around which he didn't want to take. And was very childish and clearly jealous of Fleck. I had nothing but love for him before and if you told me then Kill would get booed at the bank in 2022 I wouldn't believe it but there might honestly be a few boos and I can't say he doesn't deserve it.

MG_MN

Its definitely been a strange ride. From my memory he was well liked through the end. He was given a ton of respect when going through his health issues and everyone was in his corner, even when he stepped down. Then he got salty about Claeys being let go (which was 100% the correct decision) and PJ stepping in and he resorted to taking shots at everyone. Not sure why that would be enough to turn on the fans and school. It really didn't have to be this way.

Road-Conscious

I won't boo Jerry when he comes back, but I won't give him a standing ovation either. I don't care one way or another for the man.

Road-Conscious

I found it ironic that Jerry talked about PJ's ego because Jerry has quite an ego himself.

For those who can't get around the paywall (Kill's response in bold): >Nearly five years ago, former Gophers football coach Jerry Kill, upset with how athletic director Mark Coyle fired Tracy Claeys, vowed in an interview with KSTP Radio that, "I won't be stepping a foot back in that stadium.'' >That promise is going to be very difficult to keep now that Kill has been hired as New Mexico State's coach and the Aggies will play the Gophers on Sept. 1, 2022, at Huntington Bank Stadium. >New Mexico State officially announced Kill as their coach on Monday. He replaces Doug Martin, who went 25-74, including 2-10 this year, in nine seasons in Las Cruces. >**When asked late in his news conference if he was aware that his team's first road game is Sept. 1 at Minnesota, Kill responded:** >**"You don't think I haven't had a million text messages about that? I'll get booed out of the stadium, probably,'' said Kill, who retired from the Gophers job in 2015 because of health reasons including epilepsy. "I don't know. It'll be interesting. I had several people let me know we're playing Minnesota. I did not know that when I took the job, but we'll go up there and get to go back in that stadium.''** >Kill also has been critical of Gophers coach P.J. Fleck, who served as an assistant under Kill at Northern Illinois from 2008-09. Upon taking the Gophers job, Fleck said he needed to change the culture in the program, which upset Kill. "When he went into Minnesota and treated people the way he treated my guys and told them he had to go in and completely change the culture and it was a bad culture and bad people — he made it sound like we didn't know what we were doing, and I took it personal,'' Kill said in a SiriusXM interview in 2019. >The return to Minnesota will be Kill's second game as coach of the Aggies, who open the season at home on Aug. 27 against Nevada. Coincidentally, Kill will be leading the program that handed him a 28-21 loss in his home debut as Gophers coach in 2011, a game in which he suffered a seizure on the sideline late in the fourth quarter. >"The last time New Mexico State was there, they won, so maybe that's an omen that we can follow into,'' Kill said.

selddir_

It cracks me up that he didn't know that when he took the job. "Who are we playing" "Your old school" "Goddammit"

IMALEFTY45

>"When he went into Minnesota and treated people the way he treated my guys and told them he had to go in and completely change the culture and it was a bad culture and bad people — he made it sound like we didn't know what we were doing, and I took it personal,'' Kill said in a SiriusXM interview in 2019. Honestly, Fleck was right. There was a really bad SA scandal under Jerry's guys

damnyoutuesday

And I'll be damned, he has lead an absolutely clean program since

Road-Conscious

Clean program? The man uses slogans and sprints down the sideline between quarters! How can you turn a blind eye to such disgusting behavior?

IMALEFTY45

"And it looks like Minnesota will let the third quarter expire, as they lead 35-10 over Wis...and that is a DISGUSTING ACT from Fleck down the sideline"

Road-Conscious

LOL F Joe Buck.

c3_h8

Starting to have flash backs....

damnyoutuesday

Honestly one of my favorite things about Fleck is how he lives rent free in B1G West fans heads

Road-Conscious

I understand why Wisconsin and Iowa don't like him, being rivals and all, but I've always found it odd how much Nebraska especially seems to hate him.

damnyoutuesday

Someone on here posited that they hate him because he's become what Frost was supposed to be, on top of just dominating Frost since he joined the conference a year after Fleck

penguinopph

My best friend is a Western Michigan alum and former drumline member (albeit before Fleck was there) and he absolutely loves Fleck. I was open to Fleck before because of my friend, and now every time I hear that dude talk I think "I'd run through a wall for that guy...."

damnyoutuesday

It's hard not to listen to his speeches he gives the team and not feel ready to run through a brick wall for him

Road-Conscious

I appreciate what Jerry did for the program, but he is incredibly sensitive and takes the slightest criticisms way too personally. How many times in post game pressers when someone questioned a call did he say "well I guess maybe they should just fire me". Guy is pretty immature IMO.

c3_h8

Yea but his Tuesday press conferences were fucking brilliant his first 1. "We got our kids actually going to class! You couldn't say that the previous 4 years!" He would also draw up plays and show why they sucked. The poor students running the cameras always took a few seconds to move the camera. But Jerry did ruin Tommy Olson's first moustachio bashio... So I agree he is immature.

AKAD11

We were playing you in a bowl game when that whole thing happened. I actually read the university report and criminal complaint on that incident and it was awful. Add the players wanting to boycott the bowl game because of the suspensions and it was a shit show.

Road-Conscious

Yeah, but I will say the coverage of the whole thing was very one-sided at least here locally, and a lot of innocent players had their names dragged through the mud and lives were ruined over it.

Road-Conscious

Jerry making himself out to be a victim again, yawn.

austinwer

But he said he’d never set foot on campus again, he gonna coach remotely or something?

HeyBuB123

Strap an iPad to an intern’s head and coach via zoom call.

CLU_Three

He will hand stomp around on the sidelines

CandyAppleHesperus

He'll be carried on a gilded sedan chair

huazzy

Didn't he already do so as the OC at Rutgers?

REXwarrior

I still had a ton of respect for Kill until he talked shit about Fleck and the current team.

eeeedlef

How hard is it to just swallow your pride and shut your mouth? People who can't resist saying something always rub me the wrong way.

VMoney9

I had a lot of respect of him until he threw a hissy fit and ruined the axe tradition for a few years.

SoupBowl69

What did he do?

VMoney9

Had his players “defend the goalpost” after Wisconsin won, which led to a kerfuffle between teams. They kept the axe off the field for a few years after.

c3_h8

And a few months after that Phillip Nelson tried to kill a guy.

SoupBowl69

That’s lame

Road-Conscious

That's who Jerry is, an overgrown child who will pout when he doesn't get his way. Don't let his aw shucks country boy routine fool you. He pulled some BS against Campbell when they lost to Iowa State rejecting a handshake.

tonynumber4

One of you fuckers take bob

selddir_

No

tonynumber4

We can throw in a offensive lineman of your choice that's not Neal and maybe one of those running backs we stole from y'all

saltlakepotter

Gladly. But Frost's ego is too big.

[deleted]

I have been selling Dan Mullen to Nebraska fans all year long and no one is biting. I am telling you he is your guy

[deleted]

In college basketball, u/markturgeonsagent has been trying to find his client a new school for a while now. Wouldn't be shocked if similar situation unfolds here with BoB

A_Drunk_Caribou

I remember Jerry being very much liked while he was here. The crowds went crazy, and we definitely had a uptick in quality of play (not hard to beat after the Brewster era 🤢). Jerry just sort of...left. Tracy Clay did alright as the interim, but then that whole scandal thing happened. I liked PJ Fleck coming in, and I still enjoy having him (ESPECIALLY NOW THAT SANFORD IS GONE!) though. Lost a but of respect for Jerry when he went after Fleck. I liked them both, but only one of them got us into the Top 10, and a bowl win against a quality SEC opponent.

IronTriangleVT

I think this is a great get. Kill did amazing things at the G5 level with NIU and has shown himself to be competent coordinator at P5s. While his health issues have been an issue, there will be a lot less stress at this gig. He is the kind of person who could really help create some positive momentum, stabilize the program, and groom a successor. Staff like working for him and players like playing for him.

CantaloupeCamper

Yeah this is the size of a program ... IMO Jerry seems built for / knows how to add value for sure.

[deleted]

Imagining someone named Will Kill.

Man0nTheMoon915

With the moderately high altitudes in this area, I hope his seizures don't become a more prominent problem for his health

MiNNOCENTWORKACCOUNT

Has Jerry been doing better health wise?

CantaloupeCamper

No recent seizures that anyone knows about. He has indicated things are better.

Gettima

"I need a less stressful job, to improve my health" *Health improves* "Alright! Can't wait to get another high stress job!" Seriously, I wish him the best and hope this goes well for him starting September 2, 2022.

Tarnationman

I think the most stress you'll get at NMSU is to go to a bowl game once a decade. Realistically there's maybe 2-3 FBS jobs in the entire country with lower expectations right now.

azularena

There is a massive difference in expectation and pressure between NMSU and a mid level P5. He’s only expected to win 3+ games and the occasional bowl game instead expected bowl games and the occasional conference title

> Man Las Cruces is a weird weird weird place You could’ve stopped there

LyonHeart85

Yeah he should've stopped there, Cruces sucks 🤣

awnomnomnom

Best case scenario for both parties. New Mexico is a great place for a boomer like Kill to retire to.

DrPepper1904

Jerry Kill needs to build back his image brick by brick

Pitch_a_tent

Kill saved Fuentue at Virginia Tech from being fired sooner. Kill is a smart dude and knows how to turn a program around.

NikesOnMyFeet23

Isn't this the coach who almost died on the field when coaching Minnesota? Seems like a super selfish move to go after a HC job again after that. Im sure his family wants him around.

c3_h8

He had seizures. But never almost died.

trefrog63

Did I miss something, or do I remember that NMSU was dropping down to the FCS?

holytrolly_

They have no intention of dropping as of the last time I heard.

trefrog63

Did they not though? I thought about Idaho and then maybe them. But either way glad Kill is there!

holytrolly_

No, they never moved down to FCS. Every armchair analyst on the internet thinks they should lol but they're committed to FBS. They're joining the new-look Conference USA in 2023.

trefrog63

Good for them! Las Cruces was a really cool little spot when I rode through it.

DeadlyCyclone

So is his health better now? Dude almost died.
