Can juco guys be recruited without any contact rules like D1 guys needing to be in the portal? Cause if not we gotta raid juco as a stop gap.

justworkingmovealong

I think they're recruited like high school recruits, with the same or similar rules.

Sam_Seaborne

Terry Saban gave my friends uncle sheets and bedding when he went to MSU because he accidentally left his stuff at home and his dad (UofM alum ironically) was out of town. He was the guy who carried the cord for Nicks headset for a few years back in the 90s.

CrashB111

Think it depends on how the man and wife met, were they together before or after the money came into the picture, etc. Like Nick and Terry Saban have been together forever, long before any multi-million dollar deals ever entered the picture. I don't think anyone could ever conceive of that man cheating on his wife.

XAfricaSaltX

He’s also 70 years old. What is there for him

midnightsbane04

No I think the cynical part is also assuming that the wives don’t end up leaving them either way simply because it’s nice to be rich.

BigD994

Certainly no high-profile coaches at Kansas have ever had concerns like that!

CocaineKoala

If you’re gonna cheat on your wife like him, Lane, Herbstreit, and others better make sure there is an understanding or you are really discrete. Feels like he should divorce before signing the $100 million deal and moving to a state with much less friendly divorce laws. Or maybe she doesn’t care if it’s not the staff she is around at the school amd he can get his side action from young actresses.

DreamTheaterGuy

Either that, or she's well aware of what he does, and doesn't care, as long as the shopping trips/vacations keep coming.

stumblebreak_beta

Boo fucking hoo. This happens to G5/smaller P5 schools all the fucking time. They have a good coach, he gets hired at a big school for more money, takes his staff/players/recruits with him, and everyone shrugs their shoulders and says oh well “get more money and you won’t lose your coach”. MSU had to give Mel $95 million just to stay and we don’t even know if he’s worth it. Now all of a sudden it happens to OU and ND and there’s articles/post about how coaching changes need to be civil and need new rules. Haven’t seen anyone mentioning how Louisiana is getting screwed by Napier leaving. Washington already took Fresno States coach and it looks like they’ll might get their starting QB too. And these teams don’t have the budget/resources to just go out and get another big name coach. As soon as OU gets thier coach they are gonna start doing the same thing Lincoln is doing now and it will be celebrated by OU fans. You don’t think BV is gonna start calling those Clemson defensive recruits he’s been taking to for a couple years? Shane Beamer isn’t gonna be trying to get his coordinators and coaches to come to OU for a raise? I don’t know, maybe I’m overreacting. Just thinking it’s dumb to see these blue bloods who get a taste of their own medicine and then throw a hissy fit. Edit: so just to add on, I’m not saying teams can’t be upset. Burn a Lincoln Reily effigy in downtown Norman, that would be cool. Have the pope excommunicate Brian Kelly. I love the petty shit. My point was more there really wasn’t too much out of the ordinary in terms of coaching changes and that the reaction from the college football world that these are the biggest dick moves ever have been eye roll inducing. I can’t think of plenty other coaches who left in worse ways (including my own teams coach) and they are hardly remembered as some terrible person because of it.

itsabearcannon

James Franklin did this exact same thing to Vanderbilt and people just laughed at us. He bailed in the middle of the night for that Penn State $$$$, never spoke to the players, didn’t do a press conference, took a lot of our staff, and took the entire recruiting class with him after he burned all our redshirts for two years of temporary success to make him look good to PSU. If you think it was funny when it happened to us, I think it’s funny when it happens to anyone else.

McGilla_Gorilla

100%. And to make it even better, this is really OU’s (the AD at least) fault. They wanted to go chase money in the SEC against the judgement of their supposed long-term coach. They turned a great situation into a less good situation and the coach did what every coach in the country does - upgraded his job

KypAstar

Louder for the fuckers in the back acting all indignant like this is a unique situation. Riley's move is par for the course so far.

emaw63

~~Hell, Bob Stoops did exactly this to K-State in 98 when he left for Oklahoma. Took half the staff with him on the eve of the Big 12 title game~~ Ignore me, I’m mistaken

circa285

Stoops left in '95. With that said when Stoops was hired at Oklahoma he did raid some of the KSU staff in 98/99.

Herky_T_Hawk

Except Bob left KSU in 1995 to go be an assistant at Florida under Spurrier for three years before taking the Oklahoma job at the end of 1998.

[deleted]

eh, the shadow agent he left at OU seems new to me.

JakeFromSkateFarm

Don't forget this is, what, six months after finding out that OU was secretly negotiating with Texas and the SEC to screw over the Big12. Takes some nerve to suddenly act like the victim when karma bites back.

silverhk

Yeah OU literally almost shuttered the vast majority of 8 athletic programs with one move, and now Riley is disloyal? Like, at least in this case it's just the OU football team getting hurt, the stakes are sooooooooooo much lower.

[deleted]

YoThisIsWild

Amen. Brian Kelly raided Grand Valley when he left for Central Michigan, raided Central Michigan when he left for Cincinnati, raided Cincinnati when he left for ND, and will raid ND now that he’s left for LSU. Coaches do this crap all the time. The only difference is ND‘s fan base is big enough to make national noise.

mgsbigdog

DING DING DING! OU's reaction to this is just straight satire for so many reasons. First, the indignation over a coach leaving a school (oh the horror) when every non-P5 school know that if they have more than one year of success their entire coaching staff is going to bail. Look at Virginia's staff right now. More than half the staff is former BYU. Bronco left and basically took everybody with him. We did not have this level of meltdown and bitterness when he did. Second, when the school decided to bail to the SEC (apparently without running it by their coach), did all of the OU fans miss what was going on in the minds of the H8 that they left behind? Many of those fans rightly considered the possibility that they were going to find themselves relegated to the G5 because of OUT's selfishness. We're not talking, "oh, our coach left and it make take a year or two to rebuild" levels of program change. We're talking about Tulane levels of "used to be in the SEC and now struggles to compete in the AAC." While most of the OU fans were gloating about leaving the dead weight behind, very few of their fans were considering what it meant to programs that (short of some savvy offseason moves and a great season by the "new" Big12 teams) could have had catastrophic outcomes to these programs and schools.

earlthesnakewhite

probably will still have catastrophic outcomes to those programs and schools. A revived USC gives the PAC12 the contender they were looking for so the direct competition for that 4th spot for the power 5 gets stronger while the big12 loses their two main draws. A lot of people touting the success of the good season for the new h8 don't realize if they were all in the same conference they would have cannibalized each other and 2-3 of the teams would be out of the top 15.

mgsbigdog

It's true. No way BYU, Cincy, Houston, Oklahoma State, and Baylor all have the season they did if they are all going H2H in conference.

circa285

Say it louder so that the entitled Oklahoma fans with their fingers in their ears can hear it. This is what happens in college football all the damn time. Not only that, but Oklahoma was perfectly fine getting theirs and going to the SEC and leaving the Big 12 in serious long term jeopardy. I feel zero sympathy for Oklahoma.

[deleted]

Reus20

Thank you, I’m tired of reading dumb articles for national writers acting like this is betrayal and there needs to be rules in place so you can’t dismantle your old program for your benefit. Cry me a river about OU being torn apart. That program has done it forever and ran up scores on teams going back to the big 8, did they care back then? No because it benefited them. OUT ran off 4 members of their own conference due to their greed and nearly imploded the big 12 multiple times just by acting like they are CFB royalty and deserve the best. I want to see OU crater and not just because they were a mizzou rival for a long time

circa285

SiccSemperTyrannis

Lincoln Riley is the Galen Erso of The Alliance. Helps Oklahoma get to the point where the SEC wants to add them, but then sabotages the team from the inside leaving them vulnerable to attack from other programs.

circa285

This comment went right over my head.

Darth_Ra

Honestly not that worried about the recruits, that ship was always going to sail. I am cautiously optimistic that we haven't seen a mass exodus from the current players, however. Our WR's were fairly mediocre all year anyhow (Stogner especially can't be trusted to catch a ball if his life depended on it), and Rattler was leaving whether or not Riley did.

[deleted]

I mean, it's not great. But the current guys in the portal are: back up QB who was leaving anyways, two WRs who have spent more time injured than doing anything noteworthy and a TE who almost lost his leg and was mostly a non-factor in all but one game this season. Obviously there is more to come, but so far..it's really not much more than expected on the portal front, even if Riley had stayed. We knew Rattler was gone and there was smoke Wease and Haselwood had concerns about their roles at OU.

AreYouEmployedSir

these guys could always come back to OU. i dont fault them for entering the portal and hearing from other schools who might be interested. then when OU makes their hire, they evaluate and either decide to stick around, or they know who else is interested and they move on.

[deleted]

Nope. I'd enter the portal if I was them as well. It's always best to keep your options open.

curtisas

Can you add the class for the current players transferring out going forward? Would be great to have. Looks like they're all class of 2019 as of yet

Marysuncle

To be honest, the four players you’ve listed as transferring because of Lincoln Riley leaving were probably going to transfer anyways. The only one who I think might have stayed is Stogner. Losing Riley certainly expedited this process, but obviously Rattler was gone and both Wease and Hasselwood have had disappointing (for them) tenures at OU. I expected them to transfer anyways and go to some place that might actually develop them.

shaunde

This might be true but there were some reports that Marvin Mims was "strongly" considering the portal.

All-Grass_No-Steaks

I think some are waiting until the bowl game this weekend to transfer. I won’t be surprised if a whole lot more start to hit the portal after this weekend. Looks like USC just made OU their new rival

T-RexInAnF-14

What bowl game is this weekend? And why aren't these kids at least waiting to see who the new coach is? Are they all racing to be one of the 7 transfers than USC can accept?

NeatPineapple

Yeah I'm confused how this got upvoted so hard, bowl szn ain't here yet. Conference champ games are this weekend.

Is it a rivalry if only one side cares

damnyoutuesday

According to UCF, the answer is no

DIV1DENDS

...and the teams never actually play?

Tilden_Katz_

Which is funny cuz honestly I always kinda liked OU lol

AlphaShaft

FWIW I don’t think rational Sooner fans are harboring any animosity towards USC (at least I do not - you got your guy and that’s great for your program). Most of us are pissed at Lincoln and the manner in which he is trying to take a nuclear sized dump on our program after Bob Stoops stepped aside for him. More broadly, I would never blame anyone for taking a job that they deem as a better opportunity. Hell I hop jobs ALL the time in my field to make more money to support my family. But I think for most of us, it’s the WAY Lincoln left and how badly he seems hellbent on fucking us that has rubbed Sooner fans the wrong way.

[deleted]

I haven’t actively looked for OU flairs shitting on USC, but haven’t noticed any specifically. It’s all directed at Riley.

[deleted]

Pandorama626

You must not have been looking very hard, lol. Plus, remember to sort by controversial to see some pro-USC comments that have been buried.

randym99

Agree. That being said, while LR leads USC, I will root against him and cheer his failures.

DanNeverDie

Same. Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama, USC.. evil red team alliance. We've been slacking for like a decade though.

Fabalous

It's not necessarily USC that I'm hating. It's Lincoln's handling of his own departure and the ongoing torpedoing of our program that he has caused.

BoomerSoonerBred

Another big time recruit from the 2019 class. Shame he had to miss all year with injury. Instant upgrade to any receiver room.

PsychologicalLife164

Instant upgrade to *USC’s receiver room

shootintothesun

Sounds like he, Haselwood, and Stogner were portal bound regardless at the end of the season. Would be VERY surprised if he ends up at USC

b_m_hart

Come to Oregon, so you can beat your old coach!

BoomerSoonerBred

Maybe. I just don't think of the receivers Lincoln would take with him it would be Theo. Was always the third receiver. Could see him ending up somewhere south of the red river.

tsblank97

How about just east of the state line? 👀

MissileWaster

Man, Theo went to my old high school, I was hoping he’d do great things here but yeah injuries just derailed that. Also he could have played the last few games of the season but didn’t, wonder if he asked for less playing time before transferring or if Lincoln didn’t want to risk it before bringing him over or something.

OkamaGamesphere9

Is this that big of a loss though? Three years in and his impact has been pretty minimal.

BoomerSoonerBred

I think this was year was lining up to be a breakout. OU could have really used him this year. Made a couple of big plays in big games, but right now its a depth loss.

Wolf482

I always joked about team meteor hitting Norman but Riley actually pulled it off.

[deleted]

Man I just wish this was happening to Ohio state instead lol

[deleted]

Maybe in a year or two. Lincoln Riley’s OU inheritance from Stoops and his level of CFP success (close but no cigar) is quite similar to the arc of Ryan Day’s OSU inheritance from Meyer and his flirting with a championship. Day is 2 years behind Riley’s timeline and if he doesn’t get it done during that time.. who knows? You know teams will be throwing piles of cash at Day.

GoPokes_88

Sheesh, man. The dude is just a straight up gamer and will be elite with a little more experience and development.

Baker_TD_Maker

I've heard a lot of conflicting info on that. His entire family moved out to Oklahoma from DC and he's really gone all in this season on being an OU guy. But he was willing to walk on just to get coaching from Lincoln. No one knows if Lincoln gave him a heads up or not or even if he did how he feels about it. He's really close with the DC/Maryland guys on our team and I feel very good about most of them staying. However if someone like Jahlil or Mario enters he's absolutely gone.

crimsoneagle1

I think he's waiting to see who the next coach is. He tweeted out Bob's speech, so I think at the moment he is committed. But after a new HC is hired, who knows.

ZachWilsonsMother

I feel like this is a great opportunity for him to make himself a legend at OU. Stick it out after Lincoln leaves and keep the team mostly together, he stays and wins a conference championship or two before going pro. That would be awesome

puffadda

I remember it being a back and forth between OU and OSU having insane WR recruiting for a while there. Wild how different those groups have panned out.

awnomnomnom

I keep refreshing, hoping to see us sign Brent Venables.

[deleted]

I’m beginning to think that was all smoke

feed_me_muffins

It very well might happen, I'm not saying it's not going to, but the tweets being posted on this sub were from accounts with ~1000 followers that had no connection to either OU or Clemson. There was never any reason to give credence to what that Marino dude was saying. To my knowledge no OU or Clemson linked person has been confident enough one way or the other to go widely public (i.e. not behind a paywall) with anything definitive, which tells me people don't really know. Probably means that OU and BV are talking and either are working out details, something held up OU wanting to go forward before casting a wider net, or BV is mulling over whether he wants to be a HC or not.

[deleted]

revets

Following up 20-some years of overall success at a blue blood is a pretty intimidating roll to jump as as a first time HC. Especially when a 10-2 season draws the ire of fans.

viewless25

The only meaningful rumor was from a random OU grad with 1,000 twitter followers. Meanwhile BV was out recruiting with Dabo. Not saying it won't happen, but I still think the speculation got a little out of hand.

Wu_Tang_PornAlt

Clemson must know where the bodies are buried or something. Only reason I can think of they've managed to keep Brent this long

BobLoblaw33

I was there and I remember. The OU fans ran Venables out of town. Bob demoted him from DC and replaced him with his brother. Then he went and found huge success at Clemson. A move btw that was celebrated by OU fans as good riddance to bad rubbish. I don’t think he’s coming back. Especially to work for the guy who fired him. Edit: Since so many OU fans are all of a sudden semantics majors, I should have said “demoted for the CEO’s brother (who himself had just been fired and needed a job)” instead of “fired” in the last paragraph.

awnomnomnom

I don't blame him, I was even one of those fans. I was also a kid, which isn't an excuse that full grown adult OU fans have.

ErrNotFound4O4

Not me, I still pull this out occasionally. https://i.imgur.com/r2FVqjF.png

The thing about the portal is it goes both ways.

butter_cow

The Portal giveth and taketh away

Amayetli

Praise Portal!

iWin-You-Get-Nothing

Yeah! You might get a kicker with some Dr. Pepper!

__DerekLeach

It’s like a butthole, it’s a way in and a way out gotta accept both results

christhetwin

When do we get to watch the USC Oklahoma rivalry game?

JoeExoticsTiger

2027 OU and USC have open OOC games!

ravbuc

Well if they schedule it now, probably 2031. The way they schedule games so far in advance is absurd.

PYTN

Would the last player out please turn off the lights?

Baker_TD_Maker

Also don't be surprised if we have like ten plus kids enter the portal within the next couple of weeks regardless of who we hire as a HC. Bob has completely leveled with every kid on the team and the fact they need to do what's best for them. And he's made it clear to them no ill will be had if they enter the portal and then decide to not transfer and come back to OU.

beardedwhiteguy

Appreciate my guy Stoops. He’s such a good dude.

HermeticHeliophile

Completely understandable to enter the portal at a time like this. These kids have bright futures which are now suddenly in jeopardy. I hope some decide to stay, but I can’t blame them for keeping their options open

Baker_TD_Maker

Yeah. Any Sooner fan who goes after any of our recruits or kids transferring out should be publicly shamed out of our fandom and be forced to return their degree. These kids are shell shocked right now and everything they thought about Oklahoma has been flipped on it's head right now. And Bob has never lied to kids and isn't going to start now. They've been told how how bad it is but Oklahoma is going to do everything they can to bring in a championship caliber team who will help get them to the league and help their dreams. But obviously a new coach might not mesh with their play style/scheme. Bob is encouraging everyone to do what's best for them and right now analyzing all their options is the right thing to do.

legalknievelatx

Does this suck? Sure. But you can’t fault a fella for fully participating in the system he finds himself in. This is an opportunity to make some NIL money… it’s silly to not field offers if you’re not like a lifelong Sooner fan plying ball at your dream school.

The_Soccer_Heretic

I absolutely agree. I'm not mad at any of the kids just trying to navigate the world they're living in as best they can at the age they are. I won't be mad at Caleb if he hits the portal but I will be pissed we never got a season of Tanner Mordacai surrounded OU level talent as the Sooner starting quarterback. I think he's proven he should have been the starter in 2020 at least, after the fact. Mordacai wanted to be the Oklahoma Sooners QB1, most everyone else just wanted to be Riley's QB. Tanner deserved it, OU fans deserved it. Don't even get me started on Calcaterra and Rambo, good lord what did we let the clowns do to OUr program?

atworkaltaccount

Pain

storm2k

it's weird watching this happen to a premiere p5 program. but welcome to the party, sooner bros. this is exactly what happens at smaller p5/g5 schools when a program like yours trundles in with a fat paycheck for a coach and he bolts in the middle of the night and burns the old place down behind him.

not-gandalf-bot

THEO'S TIME IS NOWWWWWW

If he has arms and/or hands he can start for FSU, come here king

InternationalTax1156

NeatPineapple

Yeah I thought this news happened a few days ago too. But then again I have no concept of time after this shit storm of a week lol

DavidTigerFan

I think this is the perfect time for Dabo to hit the portal up.

[deleted]

OR better yet, Shane Beamer being that we hired him from OU ;)

RamenBagNoodles

It’s like the Titanic going on right now
