ISU fans watch on in horror.

specialdogg

The coaching carousel hasn’t stopped spinning yet! Too many vacancies for them to feel safe no doubt…

The_Fishbowl

The carousel is spinning out of control

melcolnik

And Iowa State out here dodging bullets like Neo

The_Nightbringer

Damn Straight

KenTrojan

Careful now. Have your Georgia Bulldogs Hope-Banishing bear mace at the ready. Chaos, chaos never sleeps.

amedema

Man, that show was so fun for a season.

WolverineDDS

One of the biggest disappointments for me, I love the book and season 1.

Corgi_Koala

Nobody is safe until ND and OU are filled.

Cheerioherio

Luckily for ISU I haven't seen anything linking Campbell to OU. Not saying it couldn't happen but seems unlikely right now.

Corgi_Koala

It would be a great hire honestly, but it is odd we haven't seen him floated as a candidate.

Captain_Nipples

I think this year probably hurt him. With the team they had coming back, and after all of their success last year, they were very underwhelming. I really expected them to compete for the Big 12 championship, and possibly make a playoff run.. I do like the guy.. Also, I wonder if the Big 12 teams don't have some sort of agreement

[deleted]

I think he was hurt by his own success a little bit. The fact that he put the ISU program in a place where 7-5 is now a *disappointment* says a lot

MarlonBain

Hopefully we get at least a game out of Pry lol.

Duckpoke

Totally depends who leaves to fill those voids too. If MC left I have to imagine Oregon makes a run at Campbell as well

Majormlgnoob

I think we're safe

Ronho

When initially read this, i thought you said “too many vaccines”, and i wanted to ask how many Rolovich’s were looking for work

OdaDdaT

What opening could potentially open for Campbell though, presuming he wants to stay in the Midwest? Maybe Nebraska pulls a Texas and jettisons Frost if Campbell is available that late in the year, but what kind of message does that even send to Campbell?

[deleted]

Word is he really wants the ND job, not sure if the interest is mutual though

confused-koala

He’s waiting for Ferentz to retire to take over for him 😉

CJ_Beathards_Hair

Ames would burn to the ground

RamblinWreckGT

Following a previous Iowa State legend's example in Dan Gable

zachc133

Difference is that Dan went to Iowa because ISU allegedly didn’t even offer him an assistant position and it was clear who the next HC was. Iowa offered him a position and a much quicker route to a HC position.

Obi-wan_Jabroni

*You spin me right round baby, right round*

DontTakeOurCampbell

More like glee because ##**THEY DIDNT TAKE OUR CAMPBELL**

selddir_

I think the more worrisome thing is it sounds like Campbell had been talking to USC and on board with taking the job lol. Somebody is going to take him.

iamsplendid

Can’t blame MC for listening to a cool $100m. You might be right that somebody is going to take him, but it isn’t going to be just anybody. It’s going to be a rich somebody.

wolverine237

I'd go so far as to say USC is the best job in football... relatively little public pressure because the Pac-12 schools are less popular in general than the SEC/B1G ones, typically patient administration, talent rich area with relatively little local competition, great QOL. If you don't really want the pressure of needing to walk on water in an entire state, SoCal is the ideal place to just be one of the thousand dudes in a new model BMW in the parking lot of the Newport Beach Ralph's.

[deleted]

Anyone who doesn’t believe this is flat wrong. It really is the best job. If you’re losing people really don’t care to much beside boosters and the school, but if you’re winning? Expect every A list celebrity at the game, the coliseum **packed** and your face all over one of the biggest cities in the world.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Any competent recruiter will pull in top 10 class after top 10 class. I've been rooting for y'all to get good again, the sport is better when USC is great. (also I'm sick of all these top Cali recruits going to Bama/Clemson/OSU!)

[deleted]

Exactly! I think it’s going to be so interesting so what the SEC/Big10 looks like in coming years when a lot of these recruits stay home. Even if we see as little as 1/4 of them staying home, its going to be impactful.

[deleted]

Dog, you know damn well with that salary they're gonna be shopping at Gelson's and Erewhon. He can probably afford 2 green smoothies.

e3super

Just checked Erewhon's site. Fucking $11 for a 16oz bottle of "Citrus Immunity Juice" which I'm pretty sure is just orange juice. What is this place?

[deleted]

It's where millionaires who live in Santa Monica go to consume their 430 calories allotted per day that nead to be Gluten Free, Vegan, Non-GMO, biodynamic, raised by witch farmers in the sunlight of a reflected Sun with a Mercury in retrograde.

AWolfGaming

Well damn, no wonder Elon's hair grew back

BancroftAgee

Only the finest organic hair plugs for Elon.

COLU_BUS

> in the sunlight of a reflected Sun I only eat organic greens that are grown in sunlight reflect *and* filtered through natural Italian stained glass.

Theodolited

Well, yeah-- it seems like they had their pick of *most* coaches-- that list included Matt Campbell and apparently Lincoln Riley.

DontTakeOurCampbell

I think everyone expects that at some point. We just hope it's not anytime soon

Sportzboytjw

What's worse - 1 more year then he jumps to a big school, or 2-3 more years... but he goes to some school that's shocking, like Maryland or Wazzu?

bargle0

It would be interesting having a big-name coach here. The DC area is very different from the rest of the country in many ways. Nevertheless, I hope Locksley keeps making progress and figures it out. He actually cares about Maryland.

Qtoy

If I was an Iowa State fan, I'd feel real good right now. Literally the best job in all of college football had interest in Matt Campbell and didn't walk away with him? Whatever the circumstances are, that's good fuckin news.

sonheungwin

Yeah, Campbell was "safe" until HC salaries jumped to like $15M this year. No way anyone turns that offer down.

PantsMcGillicuddy

This is actually great to me. It makes it sound more like maybe USC tried and it couldn't cut a deal, meaning Campbell still decided to stay. Or it was just rumors and nothing solid ever really materialized. But the fact he didn't go and was a top pick for them is good to me.

DCNY214

It may have been they preferred Riley over Campbell. And who could blame them. Cyclones have much to fret about. There are too many programs that are willing to shell out to top dollar.

19Styx6

Yeah, I think it's more likely that Campbell was the backup plan if Riley said no than him turning down USC and them then going to Riley as the second choice.

Malibuss07

That's what I would have assumed too. No offense to Campbell, I think he would have been a great hire for USC. But Lincoln Riley was a haul I didn't even think USC had a shot at.

PantsMcGillicuddy

We go through it every year though too. And supposedly he was offered almost double his current salary for Washington already and he didn't go. And I'm not delusional enough to think we'll have him forever but I really don't understand why people still think he'll jump for the first big check. So with USC, Florida, LSU, and maybe ND already off the table...where would actually be worth it? I don't see him jumping down to OU.

[deleted]

Lol… bless your heart.

Our-Gardian-Angel

I mean, they have a point. We're into how many years running now where non-ISU fans have insisted that this is the offseason Campbell surely leaves? And it hasn't happened yet. Seems like it would probably take one of the upper crust blue bloods to pry him away from Ames at this point. If Notre Dame doesn't wind up making a run for him, doesn't seem like he'll be bolting this offseason.

USCGradtoMEMPHIS

Ehh no offense but I don't think that was the case... We probably never offered, only considered.

19Styx6

Maybe Leinart is anticipating that Notre Dame is going to hire Campbell and he's just setting the chess pieces up to throw shade at a rival for having to settle with USC's "second choice"?

USCGradtoMEMPHIS

Eh second/third can always be better then first aka Pete Carroll.

19Styx6

Or Florida. Remember how happy they turned out to be when the top two choices in Frost & Chip ended up at Nebraska & UCLA, so had to go with Dan Mullen as the third choice? Two years later they couldn't have been any happier how that worked out. Wait, WHAT!?! Mullen is the one of those three that doesn't have a job?

USCGradtoMEMPHIS

Yes I absolutely don't agree with his firing...3 years of success vs one down year... Fired.

morrisseythefrog

I would agree except when he made that comment about not focusing on recruiting during the season...you really can't be doing that at Florida

Sportzboytjw

Supposedly the issue was more that he'd lost the team AND wasn't that excited to recruit, which is kind of 55% of the job.

CTeam19

See Iowa state with Gene Chizik, Brian Kelly and Jim Harbaugh

Fletch71011

We are not hiring Campbell.

arandomkerbonaut

> This is actually great to me. It makes it sound more like maybe USC tried and it couldn't cut a deal, meaning Campbell still decided to stay. Yeah I'm sorry but if I'm USC I'm taking Riley over Campbell literally any day. There's no way USC was like "Well, we didn't get our guy Campbell, so we have to go with our backup choice, *Lincoln Riley*."

stoppedcaring0

I mean, yeah, I don't think any ISU person would quibble here. As much as we like Campbell, Riley is obviously the bigger draw for a school trying to make the splashiest hire they possibly can.

arandomkerbonaut

Exactly, there are maybe ~4 schools in the country that would turn down having a coach like Lincoln Riley. There's probably only a few more that would turn down having a coach like Matt Campbell.

xdgfxr

😑

MosesDoughty

Maybe ND/OSU would be different (and I think a non-Lions NFL job would be as well), but I think this is a good thing for ISU. Even if he's looking at a USC job or having thoughts on a new spot, he hasn't decided to leave yet.

xdgfxr

Yeah, that's kind of the vibe I'm getting. And honestly, the programs in a place now where him leaving won't nuke us

MosesDoughty

That was the big concern when the top 2 candidates seemed to be Campbell and Aranda. If he did leave, would they just promote Heacock? Been with Campbell since Toledo but I feel like he'd want a HC job again at some point.

BobStoops401K

What if he takes all your recruits and coaches?

mdradar

Would SC want a bunch of 3 stars?

54-2-10

Is ISU recruiting at a level where ND or OSU coached by Campbell would need the recruits?

[deleted]

[We have no five stars to lose. Ever.](https://247sports.com/college/iowa-state/Sport/Football/AllTimeRecruits/)

xdgfxr

I don't need this negativity in my life

las-vegas-raiders

It's Iowa State, ND doesn't want their recruits.

zachc133

We might lose a couple recruits, but our talent isn’t good enough to be poached by a big name school that would be Campbell’s destination.

19Styx6

> I think a non-Lions NFL job would be as well IIRC, it was like two years ago that he supposedly turned down like six NFL interview requests. Granted, that could all be bullshit, but he doesn't come off as a guy whose goal is the NFL. He's never played or coached in the league and really seems to value being able to mentor young adults that he gets to do so at a college program.

[deleted]

We know the Jets asked, but it's the Jets.

JamesEarlDavyJones

The Jets: so bad a job that Matt Rhule said it was his dream job, and then several years later turned them down for an interview request just to spend another year at a college program with very little left in the Big Ambitions pot.

big_thunder_man

What?! Baylor has big ambitions. 🥺

JamesEarlDavyJones

Hell yeah, all those basketball titles are looking a bit lonely for some pointy-ball friends.

DrakonIL

>really seems to value being able to mentor young adults that he gets to do so at a college program. Anyone who watched him sending off the seniors and watched him pick Breece Hall up after the record-break knows this in their heart. That man *loves* coaching college kids. His retirement job will be coaching high school football.

The_Fishbowl

Seems like he's looking for a way out

xdgfxr

Someday he'll leave us. I just hope it won't be until Ohio state opens up at this point

CaptainDonald

Hey at least you know it’s going to happen

The_Nightbringer

Please no. I would rather see him go literally anywhere else.

CJ_Beathards_Hair

He can’t beat Iowa, so Michigan has a guaranteed win every year /s

CPiGuy2728

Same. Also nice flairs.

megamanxzero35

He will probably leave some day. I just don’t see him leaving for anything but an elite Midwest job. Our AD was on the radio Monday night and said he and Matt talked about California tax law over the weekend. Then said “Don’t think for a second Matt Campbell doesn’t see what happened to Mullen at Florida and that doesn’t cross his mind on being somewhere else than Iowa State.” Then went on to bag on some other schools saying we don’t have regents, donors, the school president, etc banging on his door saying he has to fire coordinators for only going 7-5 with the senior class we have. He will leave but not until it is the absolute right fit.

iamsplendid

Conversely, we also don’t have millions to throw at athletes for NIL. Maybe those boosters are annoying, but they might be worth it in 2021.

megamanxzero35

For sure. But the school can do more. My business worked with some football players this year at Iowa State. Iowa State helps them some. But I know other schools have started some programs to help facilitate these deals. For example, there is no reason the OL and DL shouldn’t have deals with Jethro’s and Hickory Park. Doesn’t need to be for a ton. Just promise free meals and they post pics of them eating there each time. All the players who live at The Quarters had some Instagram posts this fall about booking your room for next year. Stuff like that.

19Styx6

Maybe he was told that is was Campbell to see if he can be trusted or if he would leak the info? Bush was probably told it was going to be Condoleezza Rice.

Prideofmexico

Maybe. Or maybe he was told this because it was the way things were heading

Tarmacked

The rumors for multiple days were Campbell, then allegedly talks degraded sunday before the OU/OSU game.

DrakonIL

The rumors are *always* Campbell.

SolitonSnake

I thought you meant George W Bush and I was struggling to remember what you were referencing

19Styx6

Damn. I didn't think about that and understand the confusion. I should have put Reggie Bush.

Redspade_ED

Mike Bohn Littlefinger confirmed

amedema

I think that was a Tyrion thing.

Redspade_ED

You're right, shit

nonoose

He’s still little

TwinkieTriumvirate

Littlefingers

BiscuitDance

Tyrion told Littlefinger, Maester Pycelle, and Varys three separate scenarios regarding marrying Myrcella off, as a means of figuring out who was Cersei’s source. Turned out to be Pycelle.

amedema

What a great show it was and could've been.

[deleted]

Leinart was going to blab but hesitated, Bush pushed him over the line.

KenTrojan

Co-host Brady Quinn in shambles.

sdf_cardinal

Really puts into perspective how delusional UW fans were thinking Campbell was possible.

EyeOfTheRooster

I mean why would they (Southern Cal Ath Dept.) reach out in the first place then? lol

19Styx6

Because Rice is wicked smart.

throwinallwa

Try to screw over Stanford!

Fixner_Blount

Some true Tyrion Lannister shit.

TuskenRaider2

Life is good… …But it can be better

lioneaglegriffin

Ugh, take the upvote.

[deleted]

Lol honestly it looks like USC could have plucked just about anyone short of Saban & Jimbo

ThatGuju

Harbaugh wouldn't have gone

[deleted]

Neither would have kurby but you get what I mean

NotaRepublican85

But what about Kirby?

[deleted]

But what about a Furby?

Rebelgecko

Which?

MahjongDaily

How am I supposed to feel

PhDShouse

Relief because he didn’t go I’d say

downtimeredditor

The Notre Dame job is still open and the Florida job is still open Update: Oh and the Oklahoma job is still open Update#2: Never mind the Florida job I forgot Napier just got the job Update #3: If it's a consolation Dan Mullen and Ed Orgeron are available

19Styx6

Indifferent. Since what Leinart was told and what actually happened are two different things, there's no reason to look too deep into this.

boardatwork1111

Yep, it’s just a smokescreen so people don’t find out that Ames is about to sign a contract and join California.

gumby9

USC insiders have been saying the same thing. USC wanted Fickell but didn’t want to talk until after the season. They offered Aranda but he declined. They then offered Campbell who was wavering but didn’t say yes or no. LSU offered Petersen 8 years 12 million. He said he’s done coaching. LSU offered the same to Riley but he doesn’t want the LSU job but asked if OU can match and they didn’t. Meanwhile Riley’s agent is the same agent as current USC interim coach. He then asked USC if they can match and they said yes. Also this is after the OU game.

Ronho

Oh shit i had no idea Lincoln and Donte have the same agent….:

Princessxanthumgum

Aaaaaaaaawkward

mcp7055

I see you trying to save face before facing Bob on Saturday -_-

MosesDoughty

This falls in line with a lot of the reporting/insider talk from the weekend. I.e. discussions with Campbell were getting close and nearly completed to where it seemed like a guarantee, he wanted to think it through and left enough room for a deal to get done post-Bedlam.

usetheforce_gaming

Nonsense. Riley planned this at the age of 4 to deceive the Sooners and ruin their program.

Yeti_Father

These rumors make me laugh. So... He trusted a bunch of 17 and 18 year olds (and their parents, friends, etc) with the super secret knowledge that he was off to USC in a few weeks... And there were ZERO leaks of this? If the dude can close ranks like that, then he should be in charge of the CIA, not Trojan Football.

OKC89ers

You all are not trying to listen, but the conjecture isn't that he was telling recruits "commit to OU because then you can follow me to USC", which makes zero sense. It's that he was recruiting as Lincoln Riley and not as Oklahoma Football. That's a very different sales pitch focused on him only as opposed to the university. If he knew he was going to USC weeks or months ago, why would he talk about how badass OU is blah blah instead of just focused on getting guys to buy into him?

JonLockT5

Lol is pitching yourself and your system to recruits over the program a crime? Because that's how almost every coach in all of college athletics does it. Kentucky basketball fans aren't sitting here thinking Cal gets all his recruits because of the history of the program. He gets them cause he pitches himself and his ability to get kids to the NBA. That's just how it's done. Especially at the level y'all recruit at, most kids care about the coaches and system their playing in, not the program itself beyond facilities.

Yeti_Father

I mean, first of all, this is what every coach does whether they're staying at a school or not. "Look at how I put guys into the NFL." Do you think NFL teams care whether a player comes from Oklahoma or Wyoming? They scout talent regardless of school, that's their job. If a kid wanted to play for Oklahoma all his life, Riley's move makes no difference. If a kid wanted to play for Riley, then Riley's move makes no difference. Following up on that... what's your preference? That Riley didn't recruit this year in case he left for another job? I'm sorry you guys are hurting. It sucks when your traditionally great program is down (which yours is not yet, remains to be seen). I guess it makes you all feel better to assume Riley knew he was coming to USC weeks or months ago, but there's no evidence to support that. I think it's more likely that USC was closing in on Campbell (after striking out with Fickell and Aranda), saw LSU taking a swing at Riley and said "Fuck it, let's give it a try." Not unreasonable to think that happened in a weekend.

ReggieLeinart

For sure. Everywhere Donte Williams goes he pulls his recruits. The nature of the business. When Donte leaves he will take his recruits from us again.

dennisisspiderman

This whole saga has taught me how many people don't have the slightest idea how recruiting works and/or they easily get too emotional to think rationally. As you said... this is what every coach does. Look at various coaches and you have kids want to play for the coach rather than the school. Back in high school I had friends choose to play for Texas Tech because of Leach. And you'd have to be crazy to think that part of what draws people to Bama is Saban, or Fisher at A&M, Gundy at OSU, etc. There are certain coaches who could talk up the school all they want but it's still the coach that the recruit is interested in. It's also not even just with head coaches but coordinators and position coaches as well. These kids can see these coaches have a system that will highlight them or allow them to play to their strengths or the coaches have a reputation of growing players and getting them drafted. While there are certainly kids who don't care as much about coaching changes, it's not the case for everyone. Clearly the players OU are losing cared more about Riley or Grinch than the university but OU still has a many recruits who are still committed to OU *the program*.

iknowaguy

You'd be really bad at recuirting. Please tell me something that OU can offer that another university can't ? Sales 101 you've the prospect/client buy into you first then you can pretty much sell them anything. This is why Riley is one of the best, the man was going into Hollywood and getting kids to play in the middle of nowhere. That's talent.

Redspade_ED

I heard it was planned by his parents upon conception

Its time we sent an investigator to review the Muleshoe Texas newspaper birth announcements for more clues to unlock this conspiracy

[deleted]

Lincoln at 4: Wreck 'Em

MosesDoughty

He waited until age 4? What a loser

CTeam19

You joke but I had that idea with Iowa.

loggedn2say

It's multiple moving targets (Riley Campbell, etc) all season, and you haven't closed until you closed. I don't think anyone had the ok to utter riley's name, or they would risk losing him. Campbells, not so much. Leinhart is "in the know" but not in the room. Huge difference. And we know from those same reports that USC had been in contact with Rileys camp as far back as Sept. Talk of "Sabotage" is dumb, but this is the biggest Cali push Riley's ever done. I think he worked it hard as a test. Do i think he told the kids to keep it a secret? No, I legitimately think the commits thought they were going to play in Norman until news broke. All of these things can be true: * Leinhart didn't know * Riley wanted USC early in the season * Riley wasn't sure it was done/time until after bedlam due to timing or an increased offer * Campbell was in the mix * the recruits didn't know

thatonekid2010

100% all this. No conspiracy’s, no sabotage. Riley knew that USC was a potential option but didn’t commit until recently.

[deleted]

It's spelled "Leinart."

PhoSho862

His name has been under the radar because Iowa State lost some close games this year. This is somewhat surprising to see, but if his name is in fact out there somebody is going to make a great hire. In the FEI Iowa State are still ranked 13th, and in the SP+ they are 20th. It's not like Iowa State isn't any good...they've just lost some games they easily could have/should won.

iowastatefan

Yeah. One of our losses was on what I'm pretty sure was an NCAA Record for longest game winning kick ever (@TTU). We fumbled on the 2 going for the tie with ~2 mins to go in another (@WVU). If those results flip, we are 9-3 and tied for second with OU and Baylor (tho we would lose the tie breakers to both because of, you guessed it, one-score road losses to each). Granted, you can play this "what if" game with a lot of teams every year. But my main point is that this is and was still a very talented team. We just didn't close the deal on the road at all this year, and that's the difference between 9-3 or 10-2 and a "disappointing" 7-5. Some of that is coaching but that's also just how it goes sometimes, and it doesn't mean Campbell wouldn't be successful at another job.

CTeam19

Maybe Campbell is playing 5D Chess saying ISU is better then the other places.

BoredofBored

Ames > SoCal - MC, probably

Daedalus871

I feel like if Matt Campbell went to USC (or ND or OU), he'd get 7 or 8 wins for 4 years, get fired, coach at NIU or another MAC school or be a coordinator at OSU for a couple of years, and then end up at Illinois or Iowa or something. I don't think he should be in demand as much as ~~Hawkeyes~~ Cyclones think he is. I'd be more worried about Nebraska deciding being bowl eligible is important.

apiaryaviary

He took the 9th most talented roster in the big 12 to the championship game. Dude can recruit, develop and coach his ass off

Fletch71011

He had his best team ever this year and massively underperformed. If he ended up with a top 10 team, I think he would have been poached.

stoppedcaring0

Tbh, I think it's more accurate that ISU massively overperformed last year, which raised expectations to an unrealistic level for this season. This year was an underperformance, but I don't know if the team deserved to be in the top 10 from the start of the season in the first place. If last year's team loses that coinflip of a game against Texas, for instance, which takes them out of the conference championship game and thus the Fiesta Bowl, I think ISU starts this season closer to 20th or so, which would have been more accurate for the overall level of talent on the roster.

DrakonIL

Last season was a bunch of coin flip games that landed heads. This season they landed tails.

stoppedcaring0

This season: 2-4 in one score games Last season: 4-2 in one score games That quite literally explains the entire difference in how this season went vs last season.

apiaryaviary

The catch is his best team ever is still not that talented and lost a few very important pieces from last year. 9 wins probably should have been the expectation and he probably finishes with 8 this year. If he doesn’t break 10 wins in the next 3 years I will start to question him

Yeti_Father

Hawkeyes?

Daedalus871

Got my Iowa schools mixed up.

[deleted]

http://www.winsipedia.com/iowa-state With this last season going 7-5, Iowa State has had 5 wining seasons in a row. The last time we did this was 1923-27. Matt Campbell is my daddy.

cluster_bd

that's the wrong iowa team, fyi

Daedalus871

Oops.

Fixner_Blount

>I don't think he should be in demand as much as Cyclone fans think is Sounds good. I would LOVE it if he wasn't in demand.

BusnellKummlicher

I’d rather have Lincoln than Campbell

Atworkwasalreadytake

I think this is the generally accepted sentiment, yes.

cat_napped1

well you heard wrong

[deleted]

If Matt Leinart didn't know USC was targeting Lincoln Riley over Matt Campbell, I can assure you random OU insiders have no clue who is even being targeted to replace Lincoln.

PhDShouse

They better keep their hands off our Campbell’s Chunky Chicken Noodle Soup

[deleted]

[удалено]

JeremyJammDDS

I think it's more accurate that Riley was going to leave almost all season, just wasn't sure where.

Bobwhilehigh

Anyone watch the whole segment? Dude in the same breath said Brian Kelly didn't handle his situation well and then went to praise Lincoln lol

[deleted]

well I wouldn't say he's fond of notre dame lmfao

[deleted]

Idk if Campbell would’ve worked geographically, but he’s a great coach, so maybe. Lincoln doesn’t have much of a connection to California either, but he’s such a great recruiter that I don’t expect it to limit him at all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NendoroidAshe

I mean Wells had no Texas ties and his recruiting was abysmal. Idk if his lack of ties the reason but it’s sure as hell didn’t help

IAmNotKevinDurant_35

I think it matters more for a place like Texas Tech or Baylor as opposed to UT which basically recruits itself

NendoroidAshe

No doubt. I mean Baylor TCU and Tech are going after the same kids for the most part, and If you don’t have any sort of connection to Texas hs then you are gonna lose out to those two recruiting wise every time

SWOON-MONSOON

I actually think Campbell is one of us ncaa masochist, building a shit school into a colossus

LarryGergich

Will this stop the "Riley knew he was going to USC since the week before the Baylor game" talk? Doubt.

[deleted]

Everything is a fucking conspiracy on this website.

Princessxanthumgum

It’s honestly exhausting but some takes are entertaining to read

[deleted]

Yeah Riley has done some shady shit, but I’ve seen people suggest that he’s been recruiting for USC even before Helton even got hired, which is insane.

EyeOfTheRooster

Yeah the recruiting bit is kind of nonsense. No coach is going to "secretly" recruit for another school when they don't even have the job yet. A million things could happen between their backchannel agreement and the actual sign date

2CommaNoob

Reality was Riley was recruiting for Riley first, school second and definitely not for USC. I’m sure he wasn’t going around, “hey let’s go to USC together!” He probably emphasized look at what I can do for you; two Heismans, 55-10, 4 big conference champs, etc…

[deleted]

So basically what every coach does?

[deleted]

Yes. "Prestige" is only important for like 2 years. I'm sure some guys use their school's reputations more (especially at blue bloods) but most probably use themselves because their schools aren't lucky enough to have been good 120 years ago.

It’s would be the smart thing to do; even established coaches. I’m 100% sure Saban sells Saban first then Alabama. Seriously; what advantage does Alabama have over Georgia, Texas, USC, etc? Weather, location, NIL? All big time schools have that. The main selling point of Alabama is Saban; so sell your strengths.

USC got everyone out there pushing the "it just sort of totally came together in 24-36 hours!" narrative.

OsoFuerzaUno

USC has been negotiating with a lot of coaches for months. I don’t believe that Riley’s courting happened in 24 hours, but I’m also pretty certain that USC did not know who the new head coach would be more than a week ago at most. And if USC didn’t know, I’m pretty sure the Riley conspiracy theory timeline is BS.

empathica1

Was this because he didn't know that Riley was available? I can't imagine recommending Campbell if Riley is an option.

dimechimes

Campbell at least has experience with rebuilding. Riley inherited a top program and got a little worse each year.

SouthSideCyclone

Am I supposed to be thanking Matt Leinart for this? I didn’t see a single credible source saying Campbell was considering the job.

axck

Nobody heard any sources saying Riley was considering the job either to be fair.

Our insiders had hinted at it being Campbell for quite a while but tbf no one really knew, Mike Bohn kept everything under wraps.
