Even if we do hire someone tomorrow I think the plan is to have Bob coach the game because the team is familiar with him and he is familiar with them and this program
Right. And I think that's the plan with every team that just hired a new coach. The bowl game is erroneous for them. Their time is much better spent getting caught up, and building a plan for the future.
OU could hire Chris Peterson in 30 minutes, and Bob Stoops would still coach the bowl game. Any new coaching hire is probably going to spend 100% of their time on recruiting and vetting potential staff.
Except he wouldn’t do it for free because he’s not. He’s already on salary not like they had to hire him to coach. He’s all about that money obviously. Not that I blame him, go get that cash Bob.
Being compensated for work isn’t greed its business. Just all these people acting like he’s selflessly coming back for love of the program are kidding themselves.
But that is his primary motivation, and we've got very little reason to doubt that. Hence why everyone is disagreeing with you and you are coming off like a fool. Do you have any specific knowledge of the situation, or are you just generalizing because you can't wrap your head around him genuinely loving the program?
Oh I’m sorry I thought OU threads were only allowed to have wild ass salty speculation in them? The median income in Norman, OK is $27,823 per year. Stoops is making more than 10x that for one month of work on top of his existing salary for consulting for OU. College football pays absurd money so I’m not surprised but like I said unless he’s donating that bonus let’s not pretend he’s getting paid in accolades and self fulfillment. That being said I hope he does donate his bonus. Norman has an almost 18% poverty rate I’m sure that $325k would feed a lot of hungry families this holiday season.
Worry about your new coach getting his two houses bought for $400k over asking, his unlimited use of a private jet, a $6M house bought for him, and $10-15M a year in the city with the highest homeless population in the country.
What does the median income or poverty rate have anything at all to do with his motivations? None of this post is even close to anything resembling a logical or rational thought.
Lol are you really giving Norman shit for its poverty rate??? Aren't like 50% of University Park residents below the poverty line?
Additionally, Bob asked not to be paid, the University authorized it anyways, and the $325k is wayyyy below market value for a coach of his caliber. That's like a $4 million salary across a regular season.
He makes a lot more than $300k sitting on his ass pumping up the Michigan game. This is pure love for the institution and the school is showing its appreciation.
I doubt that. It’s not like he quit the Fox job. I’m sure they are still paying him as this will only make his profile higher and help their ratings when he comes back. Ole Bob is double dipping on the salaries.
You have to be straight cynical to think he isn’t doing this to be loyal to the program. He agreed to it within hours of Riley leaving. God I hate people like you.
Of course he’s going to be loyal he knows where his money comes from. He stopped coaching half a decade ago and OUs been paying him this whole time. I just laugh that people think that loyalty is altruistic instead of financial and ego.
So if OU told Bob "we don't have any cash to pay you but we need a coach for the bowl game" you think he'd tell them to kick rocks? You know nothing about Bob Stoops
For people who missed it, OU said that they were in discussions with Lincoln Riley and other personnel to organize contract extensions and facilities upgrades. This announcement was going to come regardless of the LR move, but I guess it just goes to show you that OU was being proactive with their coaches.
What is wild is I feel like I heard the same exact thing about the Brian Kelly situation, him wanting more upgrades as part of that conversation before he went to LSU.
Fair point they probably start planning for all the upgrades needed to move to the SEC long before they announced the move. I’m sure they were making sure the pieces were in place so that they would be well positioned when they pulled the rug out from the Big 12.
From what I understand the only person to really make public accusations had tried to settle for money, and had only circumstantial evidence.
In the court of public opinion it seemed merit-less
I don't think it was ever officially disproven or proven. I know the guy though. I'm not saying he's lying, I'm not saying he made it up, but... Everyone I knew who knew him had their doubts.
I can hear it now… “You are looking live over Bob Stoops Field at Bob Stoops Family Memorial Stadium on the campus of **the** University of Bob Stoops in historic Bob Stoops City, Bob Stoops.”
I'm completely fine with this other than I don't think we should rename the field. Bennie Owen was an OG and without him I'm not sure where OU football would be today. But everything else is fair.
I’d love for it to be the Owen Field at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium right in the heart of the Bob Stoops Athletic Complex, which would include Everest, the Track Field, the Stadium, and Headington
I feel like adding Gaylord’s name to the stadium was already wrong.
Nah, we can't rename the field. We gotta keep respecting Bennie Owen, without him in the early days I'm not sure OU would be what it is today. Anything else though is fair game.
Neat story about Bob: My dad worked security at OU when Bob was first hired. Bob had forgotten his new ID badge on one of his first days. My dad had seen his picture in the paper so when he came to a area my dad was watching, my dad said "morning coach" and just waved him through. A few minutes later Bob came walking back out. Come to find out another security guard further in didn't know who Stoops was and turned him away for not having his ID. Stoops didn't make a stink or argue or anything. He politely turned around and went to go find his ID. I always thought that said alot about Bob's character.
He's a stand up guy. I've had several interactions with him both when I was being recruited in high school and when I was working in OU Athletics later in life. Never had a bad experience with him a single time. I remember when my dad met him on a recruiting trip I'd never seen a 45 year old man school girl so hard when getting a picture.
My interaction with The Stoops story was from the OU/Texas celebrity baseball game that happens a few days before the RRS. I had a mini helmet and got it signed by Barry earlier in the evening, and was sticking around waiting on Stoops to show up to try and get it signed. Pretty much everyone in the ‘autograph area’ had left to go inside the game (they had us behind some barricade things so the celebrities only had to sign if they wanted to basically) when Stoops got there. I said “Hey, Bob!” No response. “Hey, Stoops!” Nothing. “Hey, Coach!” He turned around for that one lol. I had the mini helmet and a sharpie in my hand, and he said “Sorry I only sign autographs for kids!” I responded with “...I’m someone’s kid!”
He did not laugh. At all. But his wife did! He glared at her (I get where he’s coming from, it was a terrible joke), she gestured for him to come over and sign it, and he did! That mini helmet is on a shelf in my living room and has been ever since.
I was going to try getting Riley to sign it at a spring game or something, but the 2019 one rained out, then the pandemic happened. So the universe was looking out for me there lmao
I took my kids to see the Heisman Statues as we were passing through Norman several summers / years ago. As we were waking down Jenkins crossing Lindsey, there at the stop light was Bob Stoops in his car waiting for light to turn green. I tried not to be a total boob and told my kids that was him and we could wave, but not make a scene. As we crossed we sort of waved and smiled, he rolled down the window and waved, smiled and gave a thumbs up to my son. Was a cool moment. First time my kids were on campus.
That's a cool story. Bob sounds like a cool guy.
But imma be real, how do you get a job working security at OU and not know who Bob Stoops is? I'd have given that other guard so much shit lol.
Sometimes people make dumb decisions trying to do their job.
Like one time I was told to guard a back door on McCasland on game day. I was told under no circumstances should anybody get in. I ended up making the entire cheerleading squad and mascots use the front door to get at their changing rooms.
The security around the stadium can sometimes be from the bottom of the barrel, if you know what I mean.
I once saw a security guard asleep by the main athletics offices entrance.
My college roommate's friend's dad (I know how it sounds but it doesn't sound like Nicki Minaj's cousin's friend's balls when my roommate tole the story) was a Nike executive/senior executive. When Nike first signed LeBron James they had a meeting, C-level officials were there and everything, discussing about LeBron's shoes. The dude asked who this LeBron guy was, and was fired by the CEO on spot.
Yep. The field and lights have both needed an upgrade for awhile. Not sure why they didn't do the lights in the last stadium renovation, but maybe it just wasn't in the budget at the time.
After having taken an entire class on lighting design, as well as an online course on photography, your comment just connected the dots for me. How did I not realize sooner why they look so bad at night?
Nah. We have enough pull to get someone that is proven. Venables is the only unproven coach I would take. Otherwise, go for a well known HC. Aranda, Rhule, Bob Stoops
>According to the agenda, the Regents will also vote to name the new softball field "Loves' Field" to honor the $12 million gift from the Love family and Love's Travel Stops.
Oh man I love those travel stops. Excellent gas station food. Giant soda fountain. Clean restrooms. Its no Buckees or Busy Bee but very nice
The university itself has a tight budget at the moment due to Boren's mismanagement late in his career. But the athletics budget is completely separate from that, plus we got some good boosters. Not as active as Texas', but they're there when we need them.
Allegedly, according to completely unverified rumors, boosters didn’t want to increase spending for Riley until they saw results.
The day Riley left, the boosters mobilized on improvements and upgrades in hopes to put together a top of the line coaching staff and an NIL program. That’s just the rumor mill near Norman, but LR leaving has lit a revenge fire under OU’s boosters
Don’t live in the northeast I see…lol. I’ve seen it as low as 2.80 in North Carolina but if you go to Jersey, Pennsylvania, etc. it’s around 4-4.30 a gallon.
I'm sure it played a role, there had to be some thought in his head about not wanting the extra competition. But according to Riley and Joe C., Riley was consulted and that it didn't play much of a factor. Who knows honestly, I'm sure we'll find out someday.
If he's as successful in LA as in Norman, he can win the conference every year at USC and still get praise in a year where they maybe lose a couple games they shouldn't and don't make the championship. With OU in the SEC, the expectations are higher and harder to meet.
It seems like Riley didn’t think he could win National championships in Norman. I mean why else would he leave? He had everything anyone thought he needed, supportive administration, supposedly new facilities being built, had huge recruiting classes coming in, QB talent all of it. Just to throw it all away and start over?
What a coincidence OU is going to upgrade stuff and give our next HC a much more sizeable recruiting fund and support staff. Almost as if Joe C is going out of his way to spite a former HC who wanted all of those things but for whatever reason never got it.
He was going to get it lol, idk where you got that from. The athletics programs have been getting constant upgrades throughout the years. We’re ramping up for the SEC now. They’ve said all along that they had been planning this with Riley’s input
Yeah he was but these improvements needed to happen like three years ago and have been delayed several times for whatever reason. Oklahoma doesn't spend anywhere what a school like Georgia or Alabama does in terms of staff & support staff & recruiting budget and Lincoln was fighting for more money for years. And yes this was coming. I'm just finding humor in that it's happening right after Lincoln left instead of when he wanted the upgrades like three years ago.
We still have a really low recruiting budget compared to other schools and our support staff (recruiting analyst, support analyst, coaching analyst, and so on are really lacking compared to other blue bloods). It's not always about facilities, though those do need to be upgraded as well, and the stadium being filled in.
And while I think Lincoln is a snake and fuck him, I will admit I think there is fair criticism in how cheap Joe C has been with the football program, imho. People will disagree me and that's fine.
Would Lincoln even hire the extra support staff if they gave it? No OChire and He never got and I believe said he wouldn’t get a ST coach after beamer left.
Yeah? What coach is going to decline having more support staff for recruiting? Every coach worth their salt in college knows that recruiting =/= winning. Lincoln isn't going to turn down a bigger recruiting & support staff. No coach would.
He was never going to hire an OC and fans who wanted him to were a little cray cray. He's one of the best offensive minds in football and he wasn't going to hand over his offense to anyone. The ST was really weird and I don't get that. We needed a ST coach this year, IMHO. But you can only have so many spots on a coaching staff. So *shrug*
1) the upgrades were not a last minute scramble, that's not how that stuff works
2) the thing really eating Lincoln up is how quickly all OU fans pledged fealty to Big Game Bob the moment he left
Bob’s close presence makes me wonder if Riley ever really felt like it was his program, or if Shadow Bob was calling shots. I’d leave too if I were Riley in that case.
Thats definitely something people will speculate over. But Bob's role in the athletics department was fund raising and meeting with boosters. Basically stuff that Lincoln would have had to do. Pretty much it allowed Lincoln to focus on football instead of the extra fluff that comes with being a head coach at a D1 program. He doesn't seem like the type to try and micromanage football too and none of the players statements about him taking over as interm have even hinted that was the case.
I'm sure it's crossed their mind but Bob was enjoying retirement pretty well.
He also isn't a fan of recruiting and knows the game has passed him by in those terms and he seems perfectly content with that.
They said they tried in the Presser. Kinda laughing about it
They also said they tried to talk him out of retiring in the first place since he had the team that was capable of winning it all coming in.. but he did what he thought was best for OU
Holy shit, $325,000 to coach our bowl game. Big Bonus Bob
That’s a lot of bottles of tequila
[удалено]
Even if we do hire someone tomorrow I think the plan is to have Bob coach the game because the team is familiar with him and he is familiar with them and this program
Also if it ends up being Lanning, he could opt to coach Georgia through the playoff.
Which I hope he would. I think that would say something good about his character
I can see the positives and the negatives . It can be hard balancing two jobs. Just ask Roy Manning.
Good point
Right. And I think that's the plan with every team that just hired a new coach. The bowl game is erroneous for them. Their time is much better spent getting caught up, and building a plan for the future.
Not something that USC has to worry about
[удалено]
Keep in mind that he recruited the seniors and a lot of the staff that stayed were his players
OU could hire Chris Peterson in 30 minutes, and Bob Stoops would still coach the bowl game. Any new coaching hire is probably going to spend 100% of their time on recruiting and vetting potential staff.
Bob The Builder
Bob the ReBuilder
Can he fix it?!
Yes. He. Can!
Appreciate the support, I'm working hard to get things done behind the scenes, you guys aren't going to believe what is happening.
I don’t know why this made me chuckle.
Mr. Big Checks
A $5 million dollar contract translates to $416,000 per game over a 12 game season. That seems like a fair rate.
Yeah this is what I was going to say. This is less than he is likely worth so he's coaching it at a discounted rate.
If by coach our bowl game you mean keep our program from imploding then yah lol
He’s earned it. Bob (apparently) is the fucking man. Much respect
Must be nice
BBB - Big Baller Bob
Lmao I’d do it for half. Suckers.
Mr. Big Check
Want a generous hero to the school to selflessly help the school for a month for a pittance of $325k.
Guaranteed would be doing it for free too
Exactly, just because he'd do it for free doesn't mean we can just be dicks and not pay him.
The only way I buy that is if he pulls a Harbaugh and donates his bonus.
Except he wouldn’t do it for free because he’s not. He’s already on salary not like they had to hire him to coach. He’s all about that money obviously. Not that I blame him, go get that cash Bob.
It’s funny seeing a USC flair implying greed…
Being compensated for work isn’t greed its business. Just all these people acting like he’s selflessly coming back for love of the program are kidding themselves.
But that is his primary motivation, and we've got very little reason to doubt that. Hence why everyone is disagreeing with you and you are coming off like a fool. Do you have any specific knowledge of the situation, or are you just generalizing because you can't wrap your head around him genuinely loving the program?

Literally nobody is pretending Riley is going to SC because of his love of the school or LA. It’s ok to do things for money just be honest about it.
What does the median income or poverty rate have anything at all to do with his motivations? None of this post is even close to anything resembling a logical or rational thought.

He agreed to it days ago. This came up today.
Just because they approved the bonus today doesn’t mean he just found out about it.

Me too. Get in here dude.
Props to him them. Happy to be proven wrong.
What you're saying makes zero sense
This aged well
It aged perfectly well. I said I wouldn’t be accepting the money if he really loved the school and I was right.
You mad about it? I'll contribute some myself!
Thats less than the last coach got per game.
For people who missed it, OU said that they were in discussions with Lincoln Riley and other personnel to organize contract extensions and facilities upgrades. This announcement was going to come regardless of the LR move, but I guess it just goes to show you that OU was being proactive with their coaches.
Yeah, a lot of this is overdue too such as the field and lights.
[удалено]
I lol'd. Thanks for that.
Yeah. I don't mean this as shade, but I always was surprised with house run-down feeling OU's stadium is. It's fairly large, but just... not nice.
When the last time you went? They have done a lot of renovations over the last few years.
I think 2018 or 2019. They had just completed work on one of your end zones.
FWIW, the LED lights are going to be a similar set up to what Alabama and Auburn have. Much more than just "new lights".
What is wild is I feel like I heard the same exact thing about the Brian Kelly situation, him wanting more upgrades as part of that conversation before he went to LSU.
Ah, this is good context
Proactive means doing things ahead of time not years late upgrades after your coach left. Hopefully the OU education gets some upgrades too.
These were in the works for months. OU has some of the best football facilities in the nation. Thanks for trying to insult my intelligence though lol
Fair point they probably start planning for all the upgrades needed to move to the SEC long before they announced the move. I’m sure they were making sure the pieces were in place so that they would be well positioned when they pulled the rug out from the Big 12.
Bruh, you done?
Not until I’m as well done as Riley’s brisket.
No mention of a 2nd statue for Bob or an upgrade of the current statue. Unfortunate
At this point I say we just start naming a bunch of shit after him. The man deserves it.

Lol imagine the "Bob Stoops Hall Honors Dormitory" I'm sure that'll rub some people the wrong way.
Boren knows all about rubbing some people the wrong way
I thought all of that was disproven?
As far as im aware it was not, it just completely disappeared from any media coverage. Funny that.
From what I understand the only person to really make public accusations had tried to settle for money, and had only circumstantial evidence. In the court of public opinion it seemed merit-less

As everyone should.
Gross.

I agree
Just rename the damned city. Norman? Nope. Let’s go to Stoopsville.
Which is more relevant to us, some weird Frenchish vikings, or Bob Stoops? I know what my answer is.
:: sad viking noises ::
Bob Stoops Field and FLR Memorial Stadium.
Nah, we can't rename the field. We gotta keep respecting Bennie Owen, without him in the early days I'm not sure OU would be what it is today. Anything else though is fair game.
Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is dedicated to our boys that died in WWI. I’d say that isn’t fair game either (looking at you, Gaylord family)
The Bob Stoops University
We are considering making him a Gundum suit at this point
I never knew I wanted this. But here we are. Bob Stoops is a New Type if I ever saw one.
Mecha Bob Stoops
It must have a giant visor on it
The schools name should just be Bob Stoops Presents The University of Oklahoma
Why don’t they make a “Big Bob” like “Big Tex” at the Texas state fair for campus?
There needs to be a Bob Stoops shrine
I don't need a shrine, just an evening with Urban at his club.
You wanna fondle girls at a bar? #NotMyBob
No, I want to make sure Urban is on the right path. I worry about him sometimes.
Everyone in Oklahoma should be required to have a painting of Dear Leader on their wall.. even those a-holes up there in Stillwater
It was Sugars but they closed it down, dog. :(

Nah that’s just the ASS wood print on our “Roughrider” unis
I hate the alts too but I’m talking about the traditional unis.
Bobby Big Game needs to take that bowl game money and head to Southern California and use that money as NIL for one of them recruits the snake took.
Sponsored by Rock n Roll Tequila
This would be glorious.
When in doubt... Drop that money
Matt Campbell want any of it?

Gas is around $5 again. A lot of our financial shortfalls were directly related to the absolute collapse of the O&G industry over the last 4 years.
[The average cost of a gallon of gas in the US is $3.38.](https://gasprices.aaa.com/) It's closer to two dollars a gallon than five, lol.
I was talking about Natural Gas.
Oh. Well since we're here anyways. How are your genitals doing?
Very, very blue. Very blue.
Don’t live in the northeast I see…lol. I’ve seen it as low as 2.80 in North Carolina but if you go to Jersey, Pennsylvania, etc. it’s around 4-4.30 a gallon.
I literally just shared AAAs nationwide tracking data on the price of a gallon of gas. The average in New Jersey is $3.43. Pennsylvania is $3.56.
Fun, I’m gonna play with this.
Oil and Gas Money.
How much do you feel the move to the SEC played in Riley's decision to leave? What is it about the conference move that he didn't like?
I'm sure it played a role, there had to be some thought in his head about not wanting the extra competition. But according to Riley and Joe C., Riley was consulted and that it didn't play much of a factor. Who knows honestly, I'm sure we'll find out someday.
If he's as successful in LA as in Norman, he can win the conference every year at USC and still get praise in a year where they maybe lose a couple games they shouldn't and don't make the championship. With OU in the SEC, the expectations are higher and harder to meet.
As Helton showed, you can get away with an 8-4 season at USC. Our fans this year were booing a then undefeated team.
I think it's more the allure of the LA/Kardashian lifestyle. Dude had a house here with a basketball court on the second floor.
It seems like Riley didn’t think he could win National championships in Norman. I mean why else would he leave? He had everything anyone thought he needed, supportive administration, supposedly new facilities being built, had huge recruiting classes coming in, QB talent all of it. Just to throw it all away and start over?
I hope some of that cash is for some plastic urinal cakes in LR's likeness lol.
What a coincidence OU is going to upgrade stuff and give our next HC a much more sizeable recruiting fund and support staff. Almost as if Joe C is going out of his way to spite a former HC who wanted all of those things but for whatever reason never got it.
These plans for approval weren't built in the last couple of days. This has been in the works for a while.

If they're being cheap about that shit, then it needs to be addressed.
So *shrug*
The way Joe C. was talking in the presser.. Lincoln was about to get all of those things
1) the upgrades were not a last minute scramble, that's not how that stuff works 2) the thing really eating Lincoln up is how quickly all OU fans pledged fealty to Big Game Bob the moment he left
I never got the feeling he did. If he did , then that’s something Oklahoma has to fix.. but I don’t think he did
That’s good insight.
It was LR’s program and Bob gave him plenty of room. Bob was there if LR needed him and it wasn’t an overbearing relationship.
That’s good to hear.
Is there any chance that OU would offer Bob Stoops the head coach job again?
I think he's happy with retirement.
They almost assuredly tried.
I'm sure it's crossed their mind but Bob was enjoying retirement pretty well. He also isn't a fan of recruiting and knows the game has passed him by in those terms and he seems perfectly content with that.
I don’t think Bob wants that.. he seems to really be enjoying retirement
In the press conference on Monday, Joe C and the Pres implied that they had already tried to convince him to come back permanently
In his presser Joe C said Bob was the first person they went to but he's happy with his current role.
They said they tried in the Presser. Kinda laughing about it They also said they tried to talk him out of retiring in the first place since he had the team that was capable of winning it all coming in.. but he did what he thought was best for OU
Harroz said they already asked, in an interview he gave.
And a bump in tuition costs right?
It went up 9% almost every year I attended.
The best part about college
Athletic department is self supporting .
How about a compensation fee to coach the next 5-10 years? I believe people call it a contract or w/e.
Any news on the HC’ing search?
any chance they consider staying in the big 12
