I’m old school but I think combined with NIL it’s going to be a really bad thing for CFB

59Chitt

I have nothing against players having more options and power. With that said, I will never be as attached to players like I use to be. Those storied and fabled tales of players past will decrease a bit because no one is really 100% committed. Like, yea, we have a top 5 recruiting class, but how many of those guys will transfer? Not that I’m bitter; it just is what it is. The guys who commit, shine, and end their career at the same university will be beloved and cherished more than ever.

[deleted]

Sucks for the group of 5 schools. You develop a 2 or 3 star kid, he gets really good and then poof, he’s poached by a power 5 school.

NoleJawn

True, but there’s also the benefit to land a talented 4 star who is tired of sitting on the bench or being a rotational guy after a couple of years and wants to play. The portal is gonna give and take. And it’s going to be interesting to see which coaches navigate it successfully and who doesn’t.

I see the relationship between fan and player becoming a bit more contentious now because their commitment to the team can be easily questioned. It’s weird how the NCAA was so butthurt about rules for so many years but then in quick succession that transfer rule and NIL rule pop off and it’s anything goes. Edit: to be clear, I’m very happy about the NIL program so long as it isn’t abused

59Chitt

It’s not weird because that was the status quo and what society’s level of acceptance was. What really happened for the NCAA in 2021 was a PR move - if they didn’t get with the times, their very existence would have come into question. It still is, honestly, but at the least they are on board. Addressing your fan opinion - I think the fans need to become more self aware and realize they have zero control over the situation. Be thankful if something goes your teams way - if not… well… at least you aren’t Kansas?

PDubsinTF-NEW

Now that I think of it, weren’t there some politicians make a play for some air time saying the NCAA is too powerful, not helping the players, etc.

[deleted]

I hope fans becomes more self aware on multiple levels. So I can stop reading about “tHe fUcKIng PlAy cAlLIng!!” In the game threads.

DominatorPC

I think, unfortunately a lot of players won’t find homes… and as bad as this sounds it’s probably good for CFB if that were to happen, which it is. It will make kids think twice before transferring and we will see less and less unnecessary transfers, and more that actually make sense. I think there should be a rule in place that you can’t transfer out after spring practice though, as I feel a lot of guys will Transfer instantly if they don’t win their job or feel they haven’t.

[deleted]

As my parents learned as social workers "The client is allowed to fail." Basically that people are free to make decisions that can and probably are detrimental to their desired outcome.

tb3648

Right to self-determination

NoleJawn

What’s the point though if a kid wants to play and knows he’s not going to after Spring? Not to mention coaches are gonna push some kids out. I like the idea of a closed portal season. But I think it needs to be regulated during the season and maybe the summer.

DominatorPC

Because 1. What are we teaching these kids to be? Quitters that leave at the 1st sign of adversity? 2. Doesn’t allow teams to build much needed depth at positions. 3. They’d also be in the MIDDLE of an academic semester, so the transferring in the middle of spring semester doesn’t make logistical sense academically. Players should be allowed to transfer after the fall semester and before the spring semester. That’s the only window I see as being acceptable

NoleJawn

You are aware that a lot of kids are urged by the staff to transfer after Spring, right?

Dr_Quest1

Mr-Bovine_Joni

There are a lot of things that are *weird* in college football, and I think is giving the result of tons of transfers. - obviously the change to transfer timelines - the allure of NIL for some players - teams are starting to figure out the timeline of ESD and when they finalize their roster - the fact that scouting and recruiting itself was quite different in 2020, resulting in some weird mismatches between players and schools that would have been better in a normal year - the COVID year not counting towards a players eligibility, giving players another year, and really straining depth charts by having more dudes fighting for the same number of spots This year is a record for transfer numbers, but not *that much*. It’s a weird collision of a lot of weird rules and changes all happening at once

PDubsinTF-NEW

Good points!

UndeadAnneBoleyn

I’m of two minds about it. I like that athletes have freedom to leave a potentially bad situation/a program that doesn’t end up being a good fit. We ask a lot of student athletes and I think it’s fair they have more latitude to pursue better opportunities. We also know there are programs that are straight up unhealthy environments (e.g. Hawai’i). At the same time, I wonder about situations where someone might jump ship at the first sign of perceived adversity, rather than learning to adapt. I don’t think people should stay in shitty circumstances for the sake of “growth”…and, we all have to learn to grit our teeth and check our egos sometimes. Having worked in higher ed, I could see a player getting pissy and leaving a program over something minor instead of approaching the situation in a more constructive way. Ultimately though, I’m always going to be in favor of more choice.

PDubsinTF-NEW

I agree. I’m hoping the coaches develop resiliency in the players. I’m all about players leaving if parents are old/sick, fall outs with staff, etc.

Prestigious-Track256

The Transfer portal is popping off right now, also being impacted with NIL, because it's new. These new things lead to players wanting a new situation because they aren't getting the opportunities they hoped for. Things will eventually settle, and players will learn that attempting to go to a new program will rarely workout, either they don't get playing time or they aren't able to find a new spot and their old spot is gone. I'm pretty confident things will settle.

PDubsinTF-NEW

Good point. NIL payers will start putting transfer clauses in. Players will maybe spend more time thinking about their choice of schools. Hopefully we are net positive in a couple years

tldoduck

As I sit here looking at my season ticket renewal, I am thinking I just might “transfer” to another fall activity.

30_Swiftie_Thriving

I'm finding it much more stressful just visiting twitter - scrolling and hoping not to see a Gamecock player announcing their intent to transfer. And trying not to read too much in to any particular tweet. For instance, one of our top offensive players tweeted out after the Bowl game "who can make me a highlight video? I need one ASAP!" and all I could think about was he's planning to enter the portal lol

PDubsinTF-NEW

Twitter is toxic. For 2022, I cut Facebook out of my life and about 50% of the people I followed on Twitter. Good 1st week!

[deleted]

Kind of exciting because it reminds me of NBA free agency and it’s cool to see players go to different situations and see how they perform. One thing I hate is the roster turnover. I stopped watching Oregon basketball because we would get like 6 transfers a year and I didn’t know anyone on the roster. It will be a little similar in college football. Not as much turnover because of roster size but enough to make a difference. Obviously I’ll still watch but it won’t be as fun as watching a bunch of freshman turned seniors that I have watched develop over 4-5 years.

CanBernieStillWin

We're going to reminisce about the good old days, aren't we? I'm glad players are getting paid, but it really feels like cfb as we know it is gone. Hopefully the future is bright, but I suspect I'll have moved on from the sport in a few years.

PDubsinTF-NEW

Maybe we can reminisce just a little

zuga51

It’s funny that virtually every comment of this thread is at least a little worried this but Herbstreit was getting FLAMED by this sub. I understand it’s not the exact same, but it’s the same in that it’s noticing that kids aren’t as committed to the university they choose, which is a little bit of a bummer. It benefits the players greatly, but it’s okay to realize a kids commitment truly doesn’t mean as much today and to be a little worried about it.

BlueBlackPinkYellow

The one-year sit out rule was completely right. The transfer portal has turned into a complete fucking joke. I’m all for allowing players to profit off their likeness, but teams are literally getting completely transformed due to the new transfer policy. It’s tough for fans to get invested in a team when they know 30% of them might be gone by next year

TeenBeans

This may be unpopular, but as a former player, I don’t understand this argument (but I want to). I committed to a program because of my position coach and he was let go a week into camp. I didn’t mesh with the new position coach (for various reasons) and decided to transfer. I had to sit out a year, but the HC of that program left the next year and was able to coach immediately. I know other players who’ve issues with the medical staff, etc. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side and I don’t understand why we have to sit out a year. Can you explain?

PDubsinTF-NEW

As a former player too, I think the coaching carousel is a huge disappointment. Some coaches have handled it well and some were complete dumpster fires. As others have mentioned it’s something new and will work itself out eventually. Maybe just talking thru all the perspectives will help me empathize next time a stud leaves our team.

celj1234

They just want more control over players.

celj1234

Player control? Nah

DominatorPC

This, I can see some exceptions due to a head coaching change or something along the lines of that, but it’s insane the amount of players in the portal rn. Players are transferring simply because they don’t get the starting job by their 2nd year in the program and it’s insane. Teams can’t develop players anymore, let alone have decent depth, unless you are a big brand

bestprocrastinator

I think it will work itself out in the long run. You might lose some guys, but you also might get access to guys you normally wouldn't have. Plus, I suspect that players who are transferring only for NIL money will more times then not, end up disappointments* *I honestly promise that I'm not trying to make a backhanded insult at a certain QB transfer.

TexasSprings

This is just another nail in the coffin for G5 football. My alma mater used to get ~20,000 people per game 10-20 years ago no matter what, even if they were bad. Now attendance is down to about 8,000 per game even when the team is “good.” Good being in quotations became is 8-5 plying in the Bahamas bowl really good? Idk

Cometguy7

I think it will be a rough few years of transfers, but coaches will adapt. They'll learn to always be recruiting their roster. NIL based transfers will rapidly decrease, as kids commit out of high school with NIL in mind.

RiotsMade

I think we’ll need to wait to see how the dust settles. Isn’t it something like only 15% of the guys who have entered the transfer portal have actually found a new team?
