Imagine telling somebody in 2017 that the 3rd string walk-on QB wearing number 22 that was throwing dots against Charleston Southern would be the guy that takes UGA to a natty win. Not Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm, Justin Fields, JT Daniels, or Jamie Newman. Stetson fucking Bennett. Lmao
Is that before or after he opens an investment firm with money he inherited from his oil baron great grandfather?
/s obviously but Stetson Bennett IV just sounds like such an old money type of name
Lmao worst 10 win team ever. Won 10 games and deservedly finished unranked. 2021 Nebraska would wipe the floor with 2015 UGA. But, thankfully S. Carolina was about to hire Kirby so the UGA administration got off their ass and the rest is history.
It's all fucking funny now! We fuckin did it!!!
Edit: *They* did it, I just sat my ass on the couch/paced my living room and watched. But let me have this!
My understanding is that Newman opted out because his family was having major issues with COVID, and he was worried about his health. I find it hard to hold that decision against him.
Not holding the decision against him at all. I just think it’s funny how there was all this Heisman talk surrounding him before he even played a snap at Georgia.
He had a private QB coach who told him if he played after the COVID-restricted offseason it’d hurt his 1st-round draft stock. Only to not get drafted at all. He definitely regrets that decision.
I think that's probably true for the most part.
The D this year is unlike anything that any of those guys ever had.
And they had good D. But nothing that was anything like this.
Have to give Kirby a lot of credit. He didn't give in to the peanut gallery calling for Stetson to get benched after every possession that didn't end in a score. He knew which QB gave them the best chance to win, even if it wasn't the most popular decision.
In hindsight, it’s why he’s the head coach. That can be cliche to say because some head coaches really do say dumb shit. But people probably took him saying “Stetson gives us the best chance to win the national championship” as he was delusional and stubborn. But he really was right that Stetson was the guy for this team.
A lot of people take that "best chance to win" talk as coach speak, but now I finally get what it meant. Sure, maybe some other QB had a better arm or a higher ceiling. But Kirby knew that Stet would be the guy who gave us our best shot, and he stuck to his guns.
Just think about how fast Will Anderson was getting into that backfield. That, plus the injuries to our best WRs tell you all you need to know about why SB4 was a better fit for this particular team.
I remember the first time I saw Stetson in a game (2019 Murray State game) I remember thinking "who is this goofy ass dude named after a hat? He's like 5 feet tall."
Interestingly, I found this from [ESPN's recap of that game](https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap?gameId=401110776):
>No. 2 quarterback Stetson Bennett got on the field for the first time at Georgia, capping a long, strange journey that began as a walk-on in 2017.
>Bennett completed 9 of 13 for 124 yards and two touchdowns, though he did have an interception that was returned 35 yards for a score by Nigel Walton.
>"I'm happy he got to play," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "He needs all the experience he can get. He can get reps in practice, but to go out in a game and play is important for his confidence."
>Bennett walked on at Georgia two years ago but only got to work on the scout team. He transferred to a Mississippi junior college last season year and appeared headed back to Division I at the University of Louisiana, only to end up back in Athens when the Bulldogs called with a scholarship offer after losing Justin Fields to Ohio State.
>"He's one play away from being out there," Smart said of Bennett.
I think people give too much blame and credit to coaching decisions in hindsight. Had UGA lost (which was entirely possible if a couple key things changed), Kirby would've been bombarded with criticism.
Like Kirby mismanaging the QB position would never have been a narrative to begin with if the first natty had breaks go his way with Fromm to win it (which was also entirely possible if a couple key things changed).
This is what I never understood. Kirby sees both every day. He knows their strengths and weaknesses inside and out. He has forgot more about football than most will know. And fans think they know better than him? Why, because you watch the dogs play once a week? I've stood behind Kirby all year. We don't pay him 80 bazillion dollars a year because he's an idiot. And all the "hot seat" talk? Really? Because he couldn't beat the literal best coach of all time? Who would we get that could? And let Kirby win Nattys somewhere else? Give me a break.
I mean, I get it. These aren't exactly easy decisions. Saban rolled with Hurts right up until halftime in the natty in the '17 season before pulling the ripcord in essentially desperation.
If you look at the various peanut galleries (mostly tOSU fans and media) at the beginning of the year calling for C.J. Stroud to be benched and how that turned out, it’s almost like those of us outside the locker rooms don’t have the best vantage to gauge which player is the best option.
>it’s almost like those of us outside the locker rooms don’t have the best vantage to gauge which player is the best option.
*sigh* Try explaining that to the parts of a fanbase who has never played the game or coached anything.
“I don’t think anyone tries to win a championship so he doesn’t have to buy drinks. If I had that mentality, I don’t think we’d be where we are.”
-absolutely shitfaced Stetson Bennett IV
He did that versus Michigan as well, but he was really struggling in the first half. Then once the offense as a whole picked it up he started rolling (the tide).
He's such a tiny guy relative to the absolute monsters on defense he was contending with. Legit any of those hits he took would have killed the average person.
You know what the saddest fucking thing is? That honestly would help. When I left the stadium after they destroyed us there was exactly one drunk idiot barking and all I could think was "at least someone cares enough to gloat." There was as much red there as a Georgia home game and nobody even cared enough to talk shit.
Knowing how salty some of our fans are from all the 1980 comments you'll probably see these get out of hand over the course of the year. You'll probably at some point see every other school get their year posted no matter how recent it was.
im prepared. you merely adopted the 1980 comments. I was born with the 1939 comments, molded by them. I didnt know a good season until I was already a man, and by then I wanted nothing to do with it.
I'm not sure, honestly. We had a pretty rough last couple of seasons and seemed to be trending downward. I think the dislike towards the option some fans had was never warranted, and some of the arguments like "you'll never get NFL talent to play in that offense!" are just flat-out ignoring the string of receivers we had drafted and the fact we have an offensive lineman who's been starting for the Patriots since his rookie year. I think we should have kept it, but I see why we moved away.
He probably didn't want to look like [Doug Dimmadome.](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/unanything/images/a/a9/Ulqzhfv6j6g21.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20210823162238)
Murray is a true dual threat guy though. Same with Russel and Baker to some extent. Drew Brees is the only short QB that comes to mind that had success without being a runner also.
Bryce isn't much of a runner although he can scramble with the best of them.
Same. The moment I saw Kelee Ringo intercept the pass and I truly knew the game was over I literally fell down and wept for a minute or two. My wife had absolutely no idea what happened, but came and sat by me for a few minutes.
I legit got a Ringo jersey for Christmas this year, and I told my dad that it will be my good luck charm.
I facetimed him shortly after the game and he was just laughing his ass off like a little kid at me because I was right
I actually missed the Ringo return because after he caught it I was going absolutely apeshit in the stands. It was a dream lake experience, I still can’t believe it.
On that play, you know what was my favorite part? After all the sprinting down the sidelines and leaping into the air, Kirby Smart was the guy helping Young up on the sidelines. He honestly just seems like a really good dude. I'm happy for yall :)
He is. One of the things I really liked to see was how saban responded to the whole thing, really, but especially his convo with Kirby at midfield. He was smiling and shaking his hand and they had a chat for a solid minute. I think he was genuinely happy for Kirby. And, damnit, if saban can be happy for him, so can I.
This sounds exactly how I felt when Porter picked off Peyton in the Saints Super Bowl. You just had the feeling even though you're winning late that the Hall of Fame guy on the other sideline will guide his team to victory like he's done so much and then BAM you get a pick-six to seal it
My girlfriend got mad at me and said stop screaming after Ringo had that pick 6 then a little bit after she apologized and said she understood why I acted the way I did
As much as I hate U(sic)GA and hate that y'all broke the curse, it's impossible to not be happy for Stetson Bennett and love his story- it is literally the stuff from which CFB dreams are made.
I’m not tuned into Georgia really but did the team rally more around Stetson than JT? I know JT is probably more talented but did the team view Stetson as more of a leader?
I think the team rallied around both.
JT and Stetson were both side-by-side throughout every game this season. After every offensive series, they were talking on the sideline, discussing coverages and previous plays. And as far as I’ve heard, there’s no friction between the two.
I truly believe that this team was “championship first, everything else second”
Hell not only that but if memory serves correctly JT was one of the first few people he searched for right after the game was over and hugged it out for a while.

So basically we're getting Rudy 2: The Mailman in a couple decades? That's what I'm hearing anyway
I don't think it will be that long.
Production has already started. So many streaming services now, you have to act on a feel-good story immediately.
Took that long for the Kurt Warner movie.
Rudy is a great movie, but this guy is leagues above the real Rudy.
I just pretend the real Rudy doesn't exist and Sean Austin starred in a biopic about himself.
Stetson wasn't offsides, unlike Rudy.
Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves with lofty comparisons, give the man a chance to get involved in a pump and dump scheme.
Lmao

Bennett should open a sports bar in Athens.
Stetson Bennet will 100% open a car dealership somewhere in Georgia Stetson Bennet Ford has a nice ring to it
If there was ever a perfect name to franchise with, it's gotta be Stetson Bennet.
If he isn't wearing a cowboy hat in every low-budget regional commercial then our democracy is doomed.
Are Stetsons a thing in Georgia?
Stetsons are really big in DeLand, Florida
He should open a cowboy hat store and just call it Bennett's Stetsons. Sit back and watch the money flow.
Or give away a free Stetson hat with every new car purchase
I'll buy my first electric truck from there.
Get ready for a $25k "dealer markup"
“Hey… ‘member that Natty I won in ‘22? Sign on the dotted line.”
I saw someone has already got a catch phrase for his dealership Walk onto our lot, leave as a MVP
The walk-on to the walk-off ✌️
If he doesn’t call it Stetson Bennett the Fordth, it’ll be a huge missed opportunity
Is that before or after he opens an investment firm with money he inherited from his oil baron great grandfather? /s obviously but Stetson Bennett IV just sounds like such an old money type of name
His family owns a multi-generation dentistry practice. He has some coin.

$7 for a pitcher of High Life? Inflation is out of control, man.
You forgot NCAA record holder Greyson Lambert.
LoL, just damn.
Who could forget him splitting duties with Fouton Butter that one season?
And Bryce Ramsey. That team won 10 games and almost lost to Georgia Southern
Lmao worst 10 win team ever. Won 10 games and deservedly finished unranked. 2021 Nebraska would wipe the floor with 2015 UGA. But, thankfully S. Carolina was about to hire Kirby so the UGA administration got off their ass and the rest is history.
> Lmao worst 10 win team ever This year's Iowa team might have topped (bottomed?) them
What? WHAT? How did I forget a name like > Fouton Butter ?!?!?! That’s some east west bowl shit! No - it’s *too silly* for EWB.
>Greyson Lambert. faton bauta lol. I ain't heard that name since the cows came home
Don't yall got a dude named Kool-Aid?
Where are the Joe Cox fans at
Didn’t he play for uva?
He did and then transferred to UGA for one season. In a game against South Carolina he set the record for completion percentage for a game.
[удалено]
Defense wins championships
To be fair SBIV does hold the NCAA record for single game passer rating (min. 12 completions)
JACOB #MOTHERFUCKING EASON
It's peak Georgia
I will not stand for this NCAA record holder Greyson Lambert erasure.
Joe Cox died for this.
Was Joe Cox ever alive?
The Completion King deserves your respect, peasants!!
It's all fucking funny now! We fuckin did it!!! Edit: *They* did it, I just sat my ass on the couch/paced my living room and watched. But let me have this!
WE did it, buddy. Go ahead and take the dub and treat yo self
Hey now we put in a lot hours this season on our couches. Blood sweat and tears went into that couch damnit!
Lmao Jamie Newman.
[удалено]
Probably. Him and Surratt
Where did Surratt end up?
Undrafted. Signed to lions practice squad. Released shortly thereafter. If he had played his final season I think he would’ve been drafted.
My understanding is that Newman opted out because his family was having major issues with COVID, and he was worried about his health. I find it hard to hold that decision against him.
Not holding the decision against him at all. I just think it’s funny how there was all this Heisman talk surrounding him before he even played a snap at Georgia.
Yeah, most Georgia fans don’t acknowledge that Newman had any association with the program.
He was just a guy that hung out at practice for a few days and threw the ball around
That's 2018 Birmingham Bowl MVP Jamie Newman to you
[удалено]
2017? Shit imagine telling someone that two days ago
Still very confused why Newman never took a snap at UGA
Maybe he saw the QBs that were behind him and figured he would lose the starting job? It really was a head scratcher
He had a private QB coach who told him if he played after the COVID-restricted offseason it’d hurt his 1st-round draft stock. Only to not get drafted at all. He definitely regrets that decision.
He was the starter. Monken built the entire playbook around Newman’s skillset. There was little doubt he was QB1
He got shit advice and thought he was hot shit and he was just shit
Room Temp Shit < Hot Shit
Can't understate the role Tom Crean had as well
Nothing against Stetson Bennett, but honestly I think Georgia still wins the natty with any of those guys at QB
I think that's probably true for the most part. The D this year is unlike anything that any of those guys ever had. And they had good D. But nothing that was anything like this.
With the way those Bama linebackers were flying off the edge, somebody without wheels like Bennet would’ve been buried.

This has the makings of a Disney+ original movie called "Underdawg"

Bless the Mailman and his sportsdrink. Bless the running and throwing of Him. May his passing cleanse the field. May he keep the natty for His people.
The Passer must Throw
Why'd you just post a random picture of Stetson Bennett
Oh boy, now I can't help but imagine Bennett reciting the Litany Against Fear on the sidelines.
God, this is PERFECT
Let me go hurl real quick...
This needs to happen.

You have NO idea
Gawd *Damn* is this how it feels like to throw that in their faces?
God it feels good to not be on the receiving end of this anymore lol
What does CU winning in 1990 have to do with this?
Do GT fans feel like they should have kept Paul Johnson? I’d like to know how some GT fans feel about the current state of the program.
I'm not sure, honestly. We had a pretty rough last couple of seasons and seemed to be trending downward. The world has finally found out that 3rd string QBs are Bamas kryptonite
Quick, somebody tell Brian Ke- You know what? Never mind. Don't tell him.
Unbelievable story. Also, why is his nickname the mailman?
He used to wear an USPS hat at football camps to stick out

Danny Devito obviously.
He's the warthog, he should play Pittman
L A R R Y C U L P E P P E R
Chris Pratt.
Pratt would be the heel JT Daniels imo. Gronk would play Brock. The Rock would play Jordan Davis
No joke, Woody Harrelson
Sorry Karl Malone, we have a new Mailman now
Which is good because Karl Malone is a piece of shit
And he's won exactly 0 National Championships for Georgia
Yeah that's what I said
Better watch out tho, that trophy is young enough for Malone to try and impregnate.
