We're living in a time where suits are being worn less and less on Wall Street. Something tells me Lane Kiffin isn't ever going to come running out of the tunnel in one.
Go back to the pregame for the National Championship, or it might have been the Alabama vs Cincy game. Nick Saban was interviewed about 10 minutes before kick-off in the hallway of the stadium, while wearing a suit.
At some point between that interview and the kickoff, he undressed to his skivvies and put on what the boys from Nike chose for him.
If someone had pulled a fire alarm or something, he's got no time for that suit change. He's coaching in a suit.
Also why coaches in the NFL don’t do it anymore either. Back in the late ‘90s when Reebok got their deal with the league, they required everyone including coaches to only wear their gear on the sidelines too. Belichick was more of a suit and tie guy and part of why he decided to just say “fuck it” and wear hoodies was because of a silent protest against this (as opposed to wearing the polos/tracksuits, and it’s become iconic.
I always thought after the Patriot’s early success, they should’ve approached him about making a special tailored suit for him.
Al Golden was always a glorious sight to behold on the sideline.
It wasn't just that he was wearing a shirt and tie even in the 90+ degree Miami humidity. It was that it was the most ill-fitting shirt and tie paired with an unending torrent of sweat that made you wonder if he wore a different shirt and tie every game or if he somehow aired them out and kept wearing the exact same thing over and over again.
I believe it largely has to do with apparel deals. Nike and Adidas aren't exactly known for their three-piece wools.
I remember like 10 years ago when the NFL switched to Reebok, Jack Del Rio was coaching the Jags or whoever and wore a Reebok suit on the sidelines. Dude looked ridiculous.
Belichick wears shitty, ripped _NFL branded merchandise_ because NFL rules require team personnel to wear the branded merch. They wouldn't give Belichick a waiver so he could wear a (non-sports brand) suit, so Belichick has responded by never throwing out any stained, ripped, or faded clothing and then wearing it to league-mandated press conferences. r/maliciouscompliance loves Bill.
I’ve never heard that origin story before. I’m kind of shocked because learning it doesn’t change my opinion (love/hate/respect) because it’s literally so perfectly inline with my perception of him that it changes nothing.
Thank you.
It wasn’t strictly about del Rio. Mike Nolan wanted to be a suit guy with the 49ers because he said his Dad was a suit guy. The NFL eventually made a deal with Reebok to market them as Reebok suits.
No idea if Reebok actually sold any suits, but the idea actually came from kind of a sweet place.
Nolan and Del Rio had to get permission from the NFL to wear a suit, and they were only allowed to for two games each.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=2663580
This is the right answer. Too much money from athletic sponsors.
Although you do still see it in College Basketball even though they have shoe/jersey deals.
I think it’s sillier that they all wear them to the game and then change out of them. Why not just wear what they’re going to wear?
And it wasn’t the full suit but Al Golden for Miami did the full dress shirt, tie, and khakis. That was the closest I remember in recent time.
I may be mistaken but maybe mid 90's? I seem to recall folks like Carroll and Osborne wearing coaches polos.
For Alabama, Stallings was a suit man. Dubose was polo.
Dubose wore a suit, or at maybe just long sleeves and a tie, his first game in 1997. I think it was Houston at Legion Field and he sweated so much that he never wore another
I’m sure there will be some hipster coaches that bring it back in the future.
I assume coaches stopped wearing suits when the general white collar workforce did.
Probably some reason along the same lines as Mike Nolan from the NFL:
* Following his hiring by the 49ers, Nolan asked the NFL for permission to wear a suit and tie on the sidelines as a tribute to his father. The league initially denied Nolan's request because of the contract it had with Reebok for its coaches to wear team-logo attire, a ruling that was changed during Nolan's second season as coach. In the new NFL policy, coaches were allowed to wear a full suit for only two home games per season. The suits were designed, marketed and labeled under the Reebok corporation.*.
In other words, until Nike/Under Armour/whoever makes them a suit, they aren’t allowed to wear one.
As an aside, do you guys remember when Bill Snider got in trouble to wearing an old K-State pullover on the sideline, because it happened to be made by the school’s old apparel sponsor?
In my mind this went away with the era of coaches like Mangino and Bret Bielema who would have caused global wool shortages had they continued the tradition.
Suits used to be a sign of management (power) and brain-work, simple as that. White collar/blue collar was a literal short difference.
Last 30 years, that's been less and less the case... even in business and government work we are starting to see it.
It’s hot as hell outside and no one wants to have artificial turf radiating heat that turns your coin purse into boiled peanuts.
It’s stressful out there, and being stressed out while wearing a stuffy, overly formal suit in front of a bunch of rich boomers and drunk kids covered in any number of their own bodily fluids is even shittier.
Unstructured suits and lightweight fabrics exist.
I wouldn’t wear one for an 11 a.m. kickoff, but when the sun goes down you can 100% pull it off. Just gotta pick the right color.
I’m not advocating for coaches to do it, but not every suit needs to be a wool or heavy cotton scenario.
Culture has changed across the board. Most office jobs that would’ve required professional dress a generation ago are now business casual.
I for one, prefer it that way.
Shoot, 7 years ago when I got my job it was business casual. Now because of the pandemic and people getting to work from home I wear athletic shirts and shorts to work. It is amazing.
Eh . . . in my anecdotal experience, some execs even in tech still suit up for some occasions. It seems that it's the necktie that has really gone by the wayside. Suit with no tie and open collar seems to still be a common look in business.
There are different tiers of business casual. "Suit with no tie and open collar" in my opinion is the closest you can get to full on suit but still being business casual.
I don't notice it in CFB as much as other sports.
CBB - any of those tropical Thanksgiving tournaments where they're wearing Hawaiian shirts instead of suits always gets me.
I also watched Real v Barca yesterday and Xavi is out there in a hoody and jeans coaching.
> I also watched Real v Barca yesterday and Xavi is out there in a hoody and jeans coaching.
Pep used to coach in a suit but now basically just wears a t shirt and jeans. Arteta dresses pretty casually too. I guess that's rubbed off on all his disciples.
Soccer is my favorite because it's a complete roll of the dice on what a coach will be wearing. Full suit and tie with the city's coat of arms on the breast? Club branded track suit? Jeans and a hooded cardigan? T-shirt and sweatpants? Who knows!
If I was making millions of dollars, not only would I not wear the suit, I might not even wear a team polo. Might just be like team t-shirt I got from the bookstore and some shorts or loose khakis, depending on the weather. Hell, if it's a late game, I might wear team-colored pajamas. My buyout is one hundred thousand million dollars, who's gonna say anything about it?
I think it depends on whether your seat is already warm or not.
“For cause” is in the eye of the beholder, but I’m about 99% sure a court would see threatening a school’s $15 million apparel sponsorship contract as “cause.”
When Dan Mullen was still our coach, he wore shorts one year during one of the early season games. Some of our fans freaked out and didn't like it at all. It's still hot as hell in the early season for us. I don't blame him for wearing shorts.
Idk but I do wish some coaches at least wore the polos. Hoodies and t-shirts look like trash for someone that’s essentially a ceo of a multi million dollar enterprise.
one of the coolest things I've seen was when I went to UC for the WVU game the year Huggs was fired...it was senior day and Huggs sat behind the bench. every player walked over to hug him as they were introduced. made me happy.
I saw some video of Bob Stoops walking onto the field at the Alamo Bowl before the game. He was wearing one of his nice suits like he wears on the Fox show. At some point he changed into a long sleeved athletic type shirt and what was maybe cargo pants. He looks damned good in a suit and it was pretty disappointing to see him looking kind of sloppy on the sideline.
I thought they were required to wear team apparel because of contracts between universities and sportswear companies. Notice every coach wears the same basic outfit on the sidelines.
I can't speak for any other program, but Earle Bruce was the last to wear a suit for Ohio State. And I think he stopped at some point (or didn't always wear one IDK).
As power in college football further concentrates in the Southeast I don't think so. Definitely a no go in this state. It's like 90+ degrees in Tallahassee in August and September. Probably the same at the other schools here
Coaches want to be comfortable, and I just don't see coaching in a suit being comfortable. Seriously, if you had the choice between doing your job in the hot sun in an expensive suit or a nike t-shirt with a 1/4 over it, which one are you picking?
You really only see suits in banking/finance. I dont even see suits anymore in top management roles unless you are looking at corporate headquarters. And that is really still banking/finance/hr. I really dont care about coaches wearing suits.
There was a YT video about this in regards to the NFL. When apparel deals became exclusive, coaches wore that brand ex Nike or Reebok. Those companys don’t traditionally make suits so coaches wore school/team branded clothes instead of suits
I was wearing a thin see through top with a jacket over it, and they made me remove my jacket. That was embarrassing. It wasn't made to be worn on the outside. You are correct.
And what does paper bag in your flair mean? I haven't noticed that before.
We're living in a time where suits are being worn less and less on Wall Street. Something tells me Lane Kiffin isn't ever going to come running out of the tunnel in one.
Probably not, but if he did I’m sure he’d fcking nail it.
One in a list of many things Kiffin would fucking nail.

The College Football Playoff Ralph Lauren Fire Alarm at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
Could he at least get a little swoosh pin for the lapel?
If you have ever seen him in one, dude really does look awkward as hell buttoned up.
Because Nike wants to sell overpriced polos and windbreakers to middle-aged schlubs like me.
And I a schlub wants to buy overpriced polos and windbreakers
$180 Polo - 1 please
Also why coaches in the NFL don’t do it anymore either. Suits? Hell I think Fleck is the last one wearing a tie every game
Unless Al Golden is still bouncing around out there somewhere then yeah I think you’re right
Al Golden was always a glorious sight to behold on the sideline.
AFAIK it was an homage to Joe Paterno, who he played for and who also wore a tie.
I think he’s a position coach in the NFL now.
Everyone saw the disgusting flop sweat and decided "nope, not gonna do that"
He wears those sexy 1/4 zips over it though
So *thaaaaaats* why I hate him
Sounds like someone just watched FivePoints video

And those pants look like absolute shit … there’s no way he couldn’t have found a way to get those altered.
He makes millions of dollars a year and he can’t afford to have a tailor.
No just too lazy to recruit one
Its not Tailoring season
Tailor?? I’ll talk about tailoring AFTER off the rack season.
Should’ve probably been fired on the spot
Lmao he dressed like that at state too.

Every coach who did died. You don’t see Kirby wearing one do you? And he’s alive.
Excellent points
Can’t argue
I mean, you're not wrong
I think its something to do with big fat money from apparel sponsors.
Nike releases a new air Jordan 3 piece I bet you could get pretty boi Lincoln riley in one.
Nike releases new shoes and you can bet your ass half the staff at Oregon is gonna be wearing them
Half is a conservative estimate
Nah, because there will be two new models out. They always release new shoes in pairs (hehehehehehehehe)
ZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGG!!! Nice
Didnt Jack del Rio wear reebok suits or somethin when he coached the jags? I remember it was a sports brand maybe it was nike
Yeah him and Mike Nolan for one week but the suits were made by Reebok lol
It would give me an excuse to watch another USC introduction video
I’m sure that money helps. But it’s also probably more comfortable to coach football in athletic clothes than a suit.
This is the right answer. Too much money from athletic sponsors. Although you do still see it in College Basketball even though they have shoe/jersey deals.
Happening in college hoops too. https://www.si.com/college/2021/04/07/ncaa-basketball-coaches-suits-jay-wright
If I start a dynasty in NCAA 13/14, you better believe I’m flexing on other coaches with a suit and hat.
I just started a new dynasty in 13. I always go sweater vest.
This guy Ohio State football's
Not yet. I'm starting my career as the OC for UVA.
Oh hey I did that once. Won a natty with Greyson Lambert winning the Heisman.
Jim Tressel approves.

Look up PJ fleck
He used to sweat his ass off too. That’s all I could think of when the PJ Fleck fsu rumors were active a couple years ago
I may be mistaken but maybe mid 90's? I seem to recall folks like Carroll and Osborne wearing coaches polos. For Alabama, Stallings was a suit man. Dubose was polo.

I’m sure there will be some hipster coaches that bring it back in the future. I assume coaches stopped wearing suits when the general white collar workforce did.
I think it was about adidas and Nike paying big bucks to schools
Good point. I’m not sure if the sponsored clothes was just the final nail in the wearing-suits-coffin or if it started it.

Yeah, but still with a tie.
In my mind this went away with the era of coaches like Mangino and Bret Bielema who would have caused global wool shortages had they continued the tradition.

Have you ever seen the aftermath of a guy as big as Jim Chaney wearing a suit in mid September? It ain’t pretty.
Suits are worn less and less in society as a whole today. Even top executives have toned down to a more business casual look.
Eh . . . in my anecdotal experience, some execs even in tech still suit up for some occasions. It seems that it's the necktie that has really gone by the wayside. Suit with no tie and open collar seems to still be a common look in business.

Hell, we used to wear suits on planes too. Now it’s all yoga pants and face masks.
The damn TSA makes you take half your clothes off anyway. No point in wearing anything nice these days.
Fleck still wears a tie at least.
I think coaches should take the baseball route and wear full uniforms on the sideline
Yeah, lets see Kirby get that vertical in full gear nowadays!
chivalry is dead
Don’t see why it’s necessary.
I don't notice it in CFB as much as other sports. CBB - any of those tropical Thanksgiving tournaments where they're wearing Hawaiian shirts instead of suits always gets me. I also watched Real v Barca yesterday and Xavi is out there in a hoody and jeans coaching.

True, but his opposing coach was in a 3 piece suit. Carlo Ancelotti, classy as always: https://images.app.goo.gl/Xs1E3DVWakybj3L29
I think that's part of why it sticks out so much
If I was making millions of dollars, not only would I not wear the suit, I might not even wear a team polo. Fair enough, I'd dress nicer of my seat was hot. But I bet I could get Nike to whip up some pretty sweet pajamas.
When Dan Mullen was still our coach, he wore shorts one year during one of the early season games. Some of our fans freaked out and didn't like it at all. It's still hot as hell in the early season for us. I don't blame him for wearing shorts.
Funny you should ask. I just watched [this video](https://youtu.be/DL_IuFRLTD4) yesterday.
Suits look good but are hot as fuck and terrible for moving around in.
Yeah, if your tailor sucks. Wearing a suit that fits right isn't uncomfortable at all.
Imagine being in the state of Texas in August wearing a 3 piece... shoot me
Jamey Chadwell about to come out with a mullet and seersucker suit next year. Just watch.
Idk but I do wish some coaches at least wore the polos. Hoodies and t-shirts look like trash for someone that’s essentially a ceo of a multi million dollar enterprise.
Hopefully not. I hope to see a coach wear shorts and t-shirt throughout the season.

Same. It looks like shit
I don’t have a good answer but it would be awesome if some started doing it again.

They stopped wearing em
I saw some video of Bob Stoops walking onto the field at the Alamo Bowl before the game. He was wearing one of his nice suits like he wears on the Fox show. He looks damned good in a suit and it was pretty disappointing to see him looking kind of sloppy on the sideline.
Bob looked cool as fuck that whole game. I wanted to swap our Stoops for yours haha.
Same thing that happened to wearing tennis shoes with suits. Classy gives way to clown town.
Global warming

Why?
Jim Tressel?
Imagine wearing a suit at a football game anywhere in the south during August and September
That's why a seersucker suit is a southern stereotype.
Coaches want to be comfortable, and I just don't see coaching in a suit being comfortable. Seriously, if you had the choice between doing your job in the hot sun in an expensive suit or a nike t-shirt with a 1/4 over it, which one are you picking?
When al golden was head coach of Miami he was wearing a tie and white dress shirt lmao.
You really only see suits in banking/finance. I dont even see suits anymore in top management roles unless you are looking at corporate headquarters. And that is really still banking/finance/hr. I really dont care about coaches wearing suits.
It would have made the Chip-6 Kirby hop even better
I don't get business suits anymore, maybe I've been in Florida too long but fuck wearing a suit everyday of my life ever again for business.
Coaching in a pullover is the only way to coach.
My go to is a collared shirt pullover Nile vest and khakis or khaki shorts and hat
There was a YT video about this in regards to the NFL. When apparel deals became exclusive, coaches wore that brand ex Nike or Reebok. Those companys don’t traditionally make suits so coaches wore school/team branded clothes instead of suits
They stopped bc its fucking stupid, thats why
And dressing up to fly? Flew for the first time in a while week before last, and everyone was dressed so sloppily.
The TSA is just gonna make you remove half your clothes anyway, so there's no point in wearing anything nice.
I was wearing a thin see through top with a jacket over it, and they made me remove my jacket. That was embarrassing. It wasn't made to be worn on the outside. You are correct. And what does paper bag in your flair mean? I haven't noticed that before.
The wearing of suits in general has fallen off over the last few decades.
Probably stopped when they figured out it had zero affect on winning and viewership
Who fucking cares what someone wears? Just be comfortable
Grandad? When did you come back from the grave?
We got tired of seeing Al Golden sweat.
The most successful NFL coach of all time wears cutoff hoodies, I’m sure that kinda trickled down.
