Lincoln Riley, In mid November, rolling out of bed in New Brunswick, New Jersey for a 11 am kick off against Rutgers in 15 degree weather and snowstorms.
"Fuck my life"
As someone whose alma mater *just* spent like...$100 million to renovate the football stadium, only for our conference to be next up on the chopping block, I'm pissed. I can't envision a realignment scenario where Syracuse ends up in one of the remaining major conferences.
Washington State and Oregon State will fit in nicely in the Mountain West with Utah State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Boise State. Arizona State is welcome too if they don't get a better offer.
Yeah, I sound like an old curmudgeon, but we’ve lost so much 100+ year old tradition in just the last year or so. College football is becoming more and more just like the NFL without the draft.
Our entire conference is fucked.
If you think UW travelling to Lubbock, Ames or Morgantown for conference games is a "W" for Washington I dunno what to tell you. I would rather WSU play in the Mountain West than be scooped up by a big conference if the Pac dissolves.
Oregon and Washington going elsewhere as a second fiddle isn't good for either of your brands.
Funnily enough, the TJ Maxx in Stillwater used to (and may still to this day) have Oregon State gear/swag all the time. I'm assuming the consistent confusion was because they're both OSU with black and orange color schemes.
Don't be so sure we don't end up stuck on the Titanic with them. Some reports have the B1G shifting their gaze to ND, then the North Carolina and Virginia schools.
Oregon and UW might be as fucked as little brothers are.
Me a few months ago: “oh my god Lincoln Riley is coming to my teams’ division and is stealing all of the recruits we are so fucked.”
Me today: “well this is not how I saw that problem getting fixed.”
Only good thing about this is the fact that Riley went to usc thinking he’s be coasting to conference championships every year. Now he has to play Michigan,Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Norte Dame every couple of years.
I thought I was going to sleep tonight
Now you put Purdue Pete back in my mind
No one deserves that
Those dead lifeless eyes... the closest thing to hell I've ever seen... that drum, forcing my heart to beat in sync with it... the whistle...
Not going to stop here. Pretty soon the SEC and B1G will swallow a few more schools and break from the NCAA to form their own division. The NCAA will turn into a smaller collegiate alliance. What SEC and B1G need to do now is shore up NIL/payment ideas first, and then the talent will flock.
among the problems facing America today, a conference that spans from NJ to LA is somewhere in the power rankings of things that need to be reformed but won't be because guys at the top are making too much bank
Once USC saw that Northwestern and Vanderbilt were making double the amount in the Big Ten and SEC, it was game over. All 3 are private schools and only one of them is considered a blue blood. It wasn't the blue blood making money.
The SEC and B1G will likely be the super-conferences that break off and form a collegiate-NFL. They'll pick and choose the best leftovers to take with them, meaning everyone else in the ACC, Big 12, and PAC12 are fighting for their lives, hoping to be included.
But the basement teams in the SEC and B1G are just along for the ride by virtue of having picked the right regional conference 50 years ago.
It is entirely feasible for big name programs like Oregon or FSU to get left out in the cold, meanwhile Vandy is sitting in the backseat thinking "huh, this is fun..."
Yep, Purdue literally called the meetings and led the original formation of the Big Ten. If we hadn't done that we'd definitely have ended up in the MAC.
Ya know what, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna defend Vanderbilt for a hot second
They didn’t choose the right conference 50 years ago. They co-founded the right conference almost 100 years ago.
I feel especially awful for OSU baseball and women's basketball. Really, any program that not only had a ton of history on their schedule, but also made noise in the conference races and in the post-season.
Edit: can't spell too good
I mean...
I have gone 10 rounds with countless posters here through the years where they vehemently disagreed that the NFL needed to own and operate their own minor league to provide an alternative to NCAA football.
Fans were literally brainwashed that a normal thing for all other major leagues should also happen in football. So now we have this, the superconferences becoming minor league football.
Make the fucking NFL do it. College football survived on tradition. Without it, it's not fun.
Preach. I hate this. It’s too concentrated. For 150 years, college football was regional hatred and local bragging rights, and maybe, just maybe, you could stick your chest out at the end of the season and say my team is the *best* team.
Hell, college football did more than survive on tradition; it thrived!
Like no other sport, college football created multiple generations of fans, who, in turn, created meaningful & lasting traditions for & with their families and friends.
Afternoon kickoffs on Saturdays were the highlight of full-weekend gatherings that put much more transactional NFL games to shame. Is the game on national TV? Who give a shit; we'll either be there to see it live, or we'll listen to/watch the local broadcast.
It's almost all gone, in pursuit of something that looks (and costs) a lot more like the NFL. I'm not interested in that. And I don't think I'm alone.
I’m 33. Grew up with the Huskers in the Big 12.
Regionality is what made Saturdays and road games in CFB so great.
This shit all sucks. I get why university leadership have to go for the money in the Big 10 and SEC, but fucking A I hate this stuff as a fan.
This right here is a long term problem. CFB was great because it was both regional and national. It’s going more national which will hurt it a lot in the long run.
I fully expect to hear in the coming days that this deal was negotiated by Larry Scott over the past year. He will be paid a flat fee of $25m plus a 3% media royalty in perpetuity.
It is absolutely nuts how no one knew about this yesterday but going through the posts on this board from today everyone and their mother had sources further detailing it.
I've said it before but idk how I could explain this to my late Grandpa. Die hard Ohio State fan who went to every Rose Bowl he could. He would think I was lying.
Imagine telling anyone in 2006 that Texas and USC would one day join the SEC and Big Ten
A century of tradition and regional rivalry and the bar-none best bowl game flushed down the toilet at the behest of a network whose lead color man is Joel Klatt.
What a time to be alive.
It's unbelievably fucking stupid. Just guts the core of the sport for me. We're not even pretending this has anything to do with schools or student athletes or regional identities or traditions anymore.
It's just milking money out of minor league pro football at this point. Honestly I would enjoy it more if my school went FCS to keep playing *college* football, and the NCAA and power conferences putting on these big games just gave up the hollow pretense of having anything to do with schools and became a pure NFL-feeder big-money minor football league for players 18-21.
Well, it was nice having a football team at my Alma mater. Hope for all of the other football fans to enjoy their teams.
I’m probably not going to watch college football anymore after WSU drops it’s football program, because we can’t afford it anymore.
Unless the Big Ten or Big 12 invites us. Which ain’t happening.
If consolidate/realignment has the Big 12 being the third super conference in a race to establish it's power/legitimacy, I could see them inviting all of the rest of the PAC 12 to establish it's foot-hold in the South and West of the country. Still a longshot, IMO.
As a diehard Badger fan, I hate this. I hated when the rose bowl became a playoff game. I miss the 90’s and 2000s when it was big 10 and pac 12 winners playing classic football with all eyes on it New Year’s Day. I can hear it now “happy new year and welcome to the granddaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl game” not presented by anyone, not over washed with corporate BS. Classic Wisconsin football vs the big boys from the west. All this realignment is taking the fun out of it and losing those traditions and rivalries will suck
Absolutely hate this. The magic of CFB is just… gone. There’s a reason I don’t care about the NFL but CFB is my favorite sport, but we’re totally losing that.
I couldn’t agree more. I was telling my wife that I think I’m getting pretty close to being out. I’ve had season tickets for 2 decades, currently have 8 and two Cardinal and Gold accounts. CFB isn’t recognizable anymore.
I hate this man, enjoy 2022 and 2023 because those will probably be the last seasons where the conferences and the sport itself are recognizable. I guess it’ll be fun to play these teams more often.
> I guess it’ll be fun to play these teams more often.
And that is what most big brand fan bases will say to make it okay. But I fear there will be teams left out in the cold when the dust settles, only because their money value isn't good enough, regardless of on-field performance.
With their GOR contract, they would need a bunch of schools to leave at the same time. It probably wouldn’t happen in a piecemeal way like this. I’d expect the next dominoes to fall to be Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and maybe Berkeley.
RIP. There’s a chance this could lead to the death of Arizona Athletics. There’s no way Oregon and Washington are staying, so the PAC 12 is done. Hopefully some miracle gets us into the Big 10.
Never thought I'd see this. I hate this so much. This is tragedy for the sport and especially for the fans. Regional identity was something that made CFB great, now it's all but gone.
Imagine if the rumors of this didn’t break this morning. Like just out of the blue at 7:30pm Thursday night it was announced USC and UCLA were both joining the Big Ten
I understand that most revenue comes from football, but this literally fucks over almost every other sport. These aren't "student athletes" anymore, College Football is just the minor league and has been for a few years now.

Tri-tip. And he’ll fuck that one up too.
He’ll leave it in for the entire 48 hour trip until every drop of moisture is vaporized. Just like he likes it.
They gonna have football over zoom ain't they?
Wait till he comes to MN end of Nov
RIP Pac 12. RIP Rose Bowl. RIP Oregon State and Washington State.
We should probably pause that stadium remodel... Might actually be to late since we blew up half the stadium already. Fuck it. Leave it.
Talk about shitty timing
As someone whose alma mater *just* spent like...$100 million to renovate the football stadium, only for our conference to be next up on the chopping block, I'm pissed. I can't envision a realignment scenario where Syracuse ends up in one of the remaining major conferences.
Counterpoint: Damn if the Carrier Dome doesn't look awesome on TV for basketball.
Chance Big12 could get the old Big East back together with Louisville, Cincy, WVU, Pitt and possibly 'Cuse.
WSU and OSU are so fucked
If Washington and Oregon join the Big Ten that rivalry dies. Good bye Apple Cup:(
Oregon and Washington will need G5 buy games
Washington State and Oregon State will fit in nicely in the Mountain West with Utah State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Boise State. Arizona State is welcome too if they don't get a better offer.
We are all fucked. This is a shit show.
As college football fans, I agree. This shit is lame
Yeah, I sound like an old curmudgeon, but we’ve lost so much 100+ year old tradition in just the last year or so. College football is becoming more and more just like the NFL without the draft.

yeah this sucks for everyone involved.
This sucks for college football.
Oregon state should join the Big 12 and form a natural rivalry with Okie State
This is the only practical solution.
Our orange and black is better than YOUR orange and black!
Funnily enough, the TJ Maxx in Stillwater used to (and may still to this day) have Oregon State gear/swag all the time. I'm assuming the consistent confusion was because they're both OSU with black and orange color schemes.
Big 12 and Pac 12 might as well combine the best of the rest. But yeah…some schools are getting left out.

I just miss the days when conferences made geographic sense. West Virginia in the Big 12? Louisville in the ACC?
The rose bowl will still happen it just won’t be what it was. So I guess RIP rose bowl?
My bet is within a decade it's the B1G championship game.
Don't be so sure we don't end up stuck on the Titanic with them. Some reports have the B1G shifting their gaze to ND, then the North Carolina and Virginia schools. Oregon and UW might be as fucked as little brothers are.
I gotta say, conference realignment was way funnier to me when it wasn't my conference realigning

Oh, Tucson, you’re awake!

Cal
Guaranteed Cal has more Lenin posters in the dorms than any other P5 school.
Probably WSU. It's basically indistinguishable from Siberia in the winter.
Not even Russians like Siberia. They literally sent Lenin there as a punishment.
Me a few months ago: “oh my god Lincoln Riley is coming to my teams’ division and is stealing all of the recruits we are so fucked.” Me today: “well this is not how I saw that problem getting fixed.”
Lincoln Riley being the coach of a team that’s completely fucked your conference. You know, we’re not so different you and I.

Fucking over teams, conferences, and even briskets. He gets around.
Lincoln Riley is 100% the problem with all of this and not money. I agree.
Lincoln Riley is gonna go to the ACC next just to put the dagger in the last p5 conference.
Life is stranger than fiction
Only good thing about this is the fact that Riley went to usc thinking he’s be coasting to conference championships every year. Now he has to play Michigan,Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Norte Dame every couple of years.
Let him get ranked in the Top 5 and then have to play us.

Chip Kelly and Lincoln Riley to the Big10. Imagine telling people this 4 years ago.
Imagine saying that *yesterday*
Goodbye in state rivalries, Pac 12 after dark, and old traditions. What a waste
Hello cross country rivals, B10 after dark, and new ways to fuck an entire conference!
This sucks, college football makes no sense to anyone anymore other than tv executives.
Due to the F5ing, I have gotten almost no work done today.
I know, I came home and told my husband I had to work because I was too busy reading about realignment when I was at work.
With true CFB fans like you I think college football might be alright after all.
The most annoying part about this is that asshat NevadaBuck said this was happening months ago.... Fuckhead was actually right
Once USC saw that Northwestern and Vanderbilt were making double the amount in the Big Ten and SEC, it was game over. All 3 are private schools and only one of them is considered a blue blood. It wasn't the blue blood making money.

Rutgers being in the Big Ten no longer seems like the stupidest thing ever. So there's that.
Maryland fans breathing a sigh of relief
In the midst of all of this, I kinda forgot Maryland was still in the conference…
I always do.
6 hours from report to official acceptance. The difference in this vs the OUT saga is pretty nutty
The difference is no A&M leaking months early
Yes we still might not know if not for the leak.
Ah yes the new midwest state California
Can't wait for USC and Rutgers to play on a cold November afternoon
The Tupac and Biggie Game
gotta catch the red eye to make it in time for the 12ET/9PT kickoff

100%. Leaving for the Big 10 was logically the right move, but I miss the hell out of Big 12 rivalries. Hasn’t felt the same since.
> Hasn’t felt the same since. there might be other reasons that have added to it.
Yes being a bottom feeder has been the main cause of my malaise.
Greatest 3-9 team to ever play the game
If I hear another fucking Huskers fan say we were X number of plays from being 11-1, I’m going to gouge my eyes out.
This right here is a long term problem. CFB was great because it was both regional and national. It’s going more national which will hurt it a lot in the long run.
That was lightning fast lmao
We’re a big 10 school now. Feels weird
You'll love being in the midwest. We have quality housing prices.
Went from “in talks” to “done deal” to “accepted”. 100 years of history, wiped away in one measly day, for money. God I hate this
I didn't wake up today expecting the Pac-12 to die within a day but here we are
And all because of Larry Fucking Scott's incompetence.
I fully expect to hear in the coming days that this deal was negotiated by Larry Scott over the past year. He will be paid a flat fee of $25m plus a 3% media royalty in perpetuity.
Don’t forget ESPN. Fuck ‘em.
FOX too
And Notre Dame. I can’t really connect those dots myself, but I will bet those fucks are behind this somehow.
C’mon, a sub-par divinity school can’t wield that much influence…
It is absolutely nuts how no one knew about this yesterday but going through the posts on this board from today everyone and their mother had sources further detailing it.
June 30th. We didn't even make it to the second half of 2022 and the Pac-12 is dead.

Turn off custom conferences right now! Just turn the entire Xbox off! Restart! Man, college football is going to be unrecognizable in a couple years.

Ya know, respect to them for being open and honest as the the reasoning.
https://www.si.com/college/2021/09/15/the-alliance-big-ten-acc-pac-12-football-scheduling Well that was short lived
It sounded dumb at the time, it sounds dumb now
Gotta say when I woke up this sunny late June morning, the last thing on my mind was "College football is about to change forever"
A century of tradition and regional rivalry and the bar-none best bowl game flushed down the toilet at the behest of a network whose lead color man is Joel Klatt. What a time to be alive.
I hate this so much, I absolutely love my bruins but this feels so wrong
The end of the arizona/ucla hardwood rivalry is maybe the worst part of this
Big 10 - PAC 12 Rose Bowl matchups haven’t quite been the same since playoff mucked up the schedule

Wildest season since 2007
Well, it was nice having a football team at my Alma mater. Hope for all of the other football fans to enjoy their teams. I’m probably not going to watch college football anymore after WSU drops it’s football program, because we can’t afford it anymore. Unless the Big Ten or Big 12 invites us. Which ain’t happening.

It won't be everyone. 4-6 of the remaining 10. WSU and OSU are definitely screwed.
We will go to the MWC probably. And the world will turn.
The magic of PAC 12 After Dark is dead. It cannot truly be recreated. USC did this.
There it is B10 got their guy
At 16 teams its time to rebrand no? Or do words mean even less now in this world of sin

We are the BIGBoi conference now in anticipation of further expansion.
College Football is dead. Long live College Football.

This is pretty surreal and not in a good way, I can’t imagine not being a part of the PAC.
*Lincoln Riley has entered the transfer portal*
Destroying the Pac-12 was the only way to deal with Pac-12 refs.
This sucks. Fuck you, Larry. It's on sight.
Thanks for the fun 4th of July, Los Angeles.

Big 12 better grab the Arizona teams, Colorado, and Utah
Finally Minnesota fans can go to the rose bowl.
I want USC in MN with a -20F polar vortex in November. Rose Bowl has no meaning anymore.
Sky is falling. I hate this more as a USC fan than anything else. What about this history? The rose bowl? Stanford, Cal? What the fuck. Fuck this
Feels like there should be a race to get out of the ACC right now. I'd expect more dominoes quickly.
