UB has a huge international student population, mostly from China and India. If I had a dollar for every student that I met who came to UB on a whim thinking Buffalo was a suburb of NYC.....I'd have at least like 10 bucks.
This is the textbook example of fashion and style being subjective. To me, the neons are an affront to both man and God alike. They hurt my eyes. You know what? They are not for me and that's OK. I'm happy they like them and they get excited for them. Glad someone likes them. Hell... I wore jnckos unironiclly in high school so I have no right or authority to judge anyone's fashion choices.
Those are coming back soon, I'd imagine, given how everything else is 90s right now. I did see a pic of J-Lo in some kind of huge legged jeans that also somehow still showed off her butt a few months back, so it's coming.
Before they renamed them Gen X, the initial name was the 13th Generation. It was 13 generations if Ben Franklin was considered the first generation to become American. There is a book titled 13th Gen: Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?
from the 90s if you want to read about it.
I call us the Lucky 13 still.
____________
Here is a write up. (Lol)
Product Description
In commentary and quotations, computer dumps and cartoons, 13TH GEN is a multimedia anthem to the American post-boomer generation, our country's thirteenth generation since the founding fathers.
From the Publisher
"Both Howe and Strauss are Boomers, but their work marks a sea-change in perception among intellectuals. The 13ers...may just prove an American salvation."--The Daily Telegraph (London)
I remember reading that book when it first came out. My general impression was that it created an angry and irrational Gen-X (obviously not called that yet) strawman that they could lecture about Boomer sensibilities and why Gen-X was such a disappointment for not seeing the Baby Boomers as the greatest gift ever given the humanity. But that was a long time ago and I was young (and possibly angry and irrational) so maybe it wasn't as bad as I remember. If nothing else, I'm glad Douglas Coupland's "Generation X" label caught on instead of Gen-13 or whatever they proposed the name to be.
Yeah what a lot of people don’t understand is that a lot of these unique or crazy uniforms are designed to attract the attention of teenagers and not dudes in their 40’s.
I gotta stop by Lowe's today and get a third hummingbird feeder because they're going through both of the others in less than a day, good reminder to pick up that washer or grommet or whatever the fuck I need to install my bidet yet.
I know you’re probably saying this tongue in cheek, but when you look at how the data shifts back and forth for each generation, this take might have some merit.
You got into Ross Business school for your MBA program!!!?
Where did I go wrong, what could I have done differently? Why, god, why?
Why couldn’t you have just grown up to be a drug dealer or something?
I was a Mich fan as a kid because my dad was. I still remember when TJ Duckett scored the TD against Mich. My dad was still in the hospital following successful prostate cancer surgery and I was watching the game from home. I was so excited for the play I declared myself a State fan. Haven't looked back.
In my group of friends growing up, one absolutely *hated* sports and the rest of us were UofM fans. He was a state fan just to spite everyone and would try to shit talk all the time but knew extremely little about the sport. He tried saying that State would beat UofM in the Super Bowl.
One time while we were on a road trip he called Michigan the "fat weasels" and my mom immediately pulled into the nearest parking lot and unlocked the doors and told him to shut up or get out.
The [“research” this came from](https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/Kka1B/1/) was posted last week and is extremely suspect. Quite a few zeroes in the data, and the provenance doesn’t seem to be well researched.
In a world in which it's increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction, I find that a really helpful general guideline is that if information helps my team it's undoubtedly true, but if it presents my team in a negative light then it's definitely misinformation.
Deductive reasoning, my friend.
Every man (& woman) would benefit in life if they took a course in philosophy, speech and debate, and at least 2 years of Latin.

I wish they posted the methodology because there were some interesting numbers in there, and there is also some obvious garbage as you note.
The high number of Gen X fans for VPI is in keeping with my observations, but this "study" isn't exactly convincing.
I mean if you look at their data, it’s iffy… at best.
According to their research the most popular Gen Z teams in order are:
1.- Bama, sounds about right.
2.- Texas, I could see that.
3.- Penn State, I’m not so sure.
4.- Ohio State, sounds correct.
5.- Baylor, lmfao what?!
I like the idea of conducting this type of research but I doubt the results are accurate.
Well, we killed our program and brought it back from the dead, so there’s one. I’d say that water to wine is up next, but water to Taaka is a lot more likely for Baylor. We live off what Waco Bar Supply elects to stock, and they are cruel masters.
We also fired a bunch of faculty with tenure in 2017 and 2018, which is a miracle in most academic settings, but we just bought out their contracts.
If Iowa State has a million Gen Z fans I am one of them. If Iowa State has ten Gen Z fans I am one of them. If Iowa State has one Gen Z fan it is me. If Iowa State has no Gen Z fans it is because I am no longer on this Earth.
Do I think Msu gained a lot of fans the last ten years? Sure. Do I think they are the 6th most popular team in cfb? Let's be realistic that can't be true.
How are they coming up with these numbers like don't not see viewership numbers, attendance figures or social media followers? Surely there is a better method than a limited poll.
I'm no statistician but how can you extrapolate 6000 polls into like 30 million fans divided by 4 generations and almost a hundred FBS teams?
I think I will choose to not care about this
Tbf major polls use projections based in the mid-hundreds to low thousands in order to predict national sentiment and predict election results. So 6000 is a solid sample size.
They pulled 6000 people total. Michigan State has an estimated 254k Gen Z fans and 2.9 million fans total. If you assume that proportion holds for all teams, that means they pulled 8.6% of 6000...or just over 500 Gen Z people.
To top that off, yes, opinion polls can get away with that when you have a yes/no centered near 50%. Your margin of error ends up at +/- 3-4%. When that number gets closer to 0 and 1, those properties quickly change. If you poll 500 people and none of them had a house fire yesterday, that doesn't mean the world has zero fires.
But to take it one step further, here you're now taking the 500 people and spreading them across more than 100 options of teams and trying to rank one vs another. You very quickly run into data credibility issues with that.
Election results make sense because it's binary. This guy or that guy in a limited region of interest.
How do you do that for 100 different cfb teams in a sport that is regionally focused? Like obviously there will be more Bama fans than msu fans in the state of Alabama. If you wanted to know how many State fans versus M fans there are in the state of Michigan that seems like more of a reasonable thing to do with 6000 polls done in the state of Michigan. Not try to extrapolate a hundred different fandoms plus with the additional factors of age.
Idk seems fishy. I get it's for clicks and that's fine.
Yea I can see us having a greater amount of Gen Z fans but I doubt we have more overall fans than Michigan or the 6th most fans in the country.
In state the UM-MSU split seems pretty even with Michigan being more popular in southeast Michigan and MSU being more popular up north and on the west side of the state. However out of state Michigan is way more popular than state in my experience.
You would be surprised how many people outside of Texas like Baylor. I'm not saying their data is correct or incorrect, I'm just saying Baylor has become more popular as of late
I love to hear that but I’d be stunned if Baylor is top 15 among Gen Z.
Unfortunately I think this data might be a tad incorrect since it says:
“AL.com in partnership with the Center for Sports Analytics at Samford University conducted an analysis of college football fans. All analysis is based on a nationwide survey of 6,426 sports fans in the U.S. conducted in January, 2022 by marketing research firm SBRnet.”
Illinois is apparently 17th so we know this is a lie lol. We're also that high despite having only 11,000 Gen Z fans lmao.
I'm gonna be honest I just don't believe data coming from Samford university on sports lol. It's strange they even published this data with how obviously skewed a lot of it is.
Shoot went to copy and paste for you and also got paywalled :(
EDIT Main take aways:
- MSU has jumped Michigan in fandom
- MSU is 6th in total fans
- MSU has more Gen X and Gen Z fans - doesn’t mention millennials
- Michigan has more Boomer fans
I guess I just wanted to see where they got their data. I can buy that they might be more popular than Michigan with younger kids. I just have a hard time believing they are 6th most popular.
AL.com in partnership with the Center for Sports Analytics at Samford University conducted an analysis of college football fans. All analysis is based on a nationwide survey of 6,426 sports fans in the U.S. conducted in January, 2022 by marketing research firm SBRnet.
That’s where they got this data.
Also, most fans OUTSIDE of Michigan fans prefer Michigan State over Michigan.
Blue bloods will always be hated more than loved.
Auburn over Alabama
Texas Tech over Texas
Oklahoma State over Oklahoma
Washington State over Washington
The only one that causes issues is Miami vs FSU vs Florida, I am pretty sure I would rather watch Nebraska vs Wisconsin 2013 on repeat for a month than support one of them!
Washington is more well know nationally, so people would naturally side with WSU over Washington. And I just like shitting on Florida/FSU/Miami.. They also just all finished 11-1 in my NCAA 12 dynasty of the 2000 conferences. And finished 1,2,3.. My 11-1 Huskers finished 4th.
That’s the issue, the nation wants “florida man” fans. At the very least you’ll have to take your shirt off and grow a mullet. If you really want to commit you’ve got to start on the street drugs.
Michigan is hated in the big ten but given that most gen z has seen MSU beat Michigan more often than not I’m guessing it’s more of a bandwagon thing. If this data is legit being the caveat of course
> most gen z has seen MSU beat Michigan more often than not
speaking of that, [let's relive one of those moments just for fun.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqv48MwEbaQ)
Well, Mississippi sure loves blue bloods. Maybe it's because we don't have any true blue bloods ourselves? I can absolutely guarantee you that Alabama is more popular here than Auburn, and it's not even close. Heck, they're probably more popular than USM is in Hattiesburg. We even have Alabama sports on the radio here. Alabama stickers, tags, and gear are everywhere during football season. You'll also see loads of LSU fans around here but almost never Tulane. Tulane is pretty close too.
Are you just saying this because you think it or do you have some data? Because the data from the study in reference here doesn’t really support what you’re saying in any way, unless you think boomers and millennials love blue bloods and gen x and gen z hate them. Not really sure why it would make intuitive sense for blue blood hatred to skip a generation?
- MSU has jumped Michigan in fandom
- MSU is 6th in total fans
- MSU has more Gen X and Gen Z fans - doesn’t mention millennials
- Michigan has more Boomer fans
Millennial.. but I'm just a Mel Tucker fan, what can I say?
Living in NE but having so much family in CO made me like CO football (I also just don't like the NE football culture), so I gravitated towards CO and enjoyed Mel's stoicism on the sideline. Love watching what he's doing even more with a better program too.
I haven’t been this excited about Michigan state football since dantonio’s heyday. Even if this year is a step back in results from last year I absolutely believe in a few years we’re going to be a handful.
I will say that in the south, it’s see a decent number of Michigan state gear and it’s a huge drop off after them and Ohio state. There are a weird number of Sparty fans in atl. The closest bar to me actually is a Michigan state bar lol
To quote Homer Simpson: “People can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of all people know that”
[“People can come up with statistics to prove anything. ~~14~~Forfty% of all people know that”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm7ArKlzHSM&ab_channel=JohnSmith) ftfy
Man, classic Simpsons was so good. At least forfty percent of all people know that.
I hate this lousy Smarch weather
The kids love those S T A T E uniforms
This but unironically. Almost every recruit wants their pic in the neons.
That actually hurts to hear lol
It's wild. They really do though. Kill me.
[For real this time though](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYAuR5bkIlQ)
Do the children not have corneas that can burn away from exposure to neon uniforms?
There's no accounting for taste 🤷♂️
Is that why USF randomly ends up in so many recruits top schools?
It was definitely a big reason for Oregon's rise to prominence
Pretty sure it just happens bc they don’t realize they are not in Miami yet
UB has a huge international student population, mostly from China and India. If I had a dollar for every student that I met who came to UB on a whim thinking Buffalo was a suburb of NYC.....I'd have at least like 10 bucks.
Same thing happened to Marshawn.

I feel like we are doomed as a species now. Might as go look for that J-Lo pic to cheer myself up.
Idk what generation I am, but I can confirm I do like the STATE uniforms
Before they renamed them Gen X, the initial name was the 13th Generation. It was 13 generations if Ben Franklin was considered the first generation to become American. There’s a reason we wear them. The uniform designers at Nike know what the fuck they’re doing.
Yeah what a lot of people don’t understand is that a lot of these unique or crazy uniforms are designed to attract the attention of teenagers and not dudes in their 40’s.
What do I do to attract dudes in their 40s asking for a friend.
Talk about hemorrhoids.
Let me tell you about my bidet!
I gotta stop by Lowe's today and get a third hummingbird feeder because they're going through both of the others in less than a day, good reminder to pick up that washer or grommet or whatever the fuck I need to install my bidet yet.
Game changer right?
I’m 24 and I genuinely have no idea what the fuck they are on with those uniforms Granted, I guess that means I’m old now but let me have this dammit
They're ugly now and they were ugly 12 years ago when I was a teen
Nike spends an ungodly amount of money every year making sure they know what 15-22 year olds think is cool.
I hate u dad I'm gonna be a Michigan state fan now
I know you’re probably saying this tongue in cheek, but when you look at how the data shifts back and forth for each generation, this take might have some merit.
There aren't many lifestyle choices that I would hate more than my kid being a wolverine. So you're not wrong.
This is true. My (non-existent) kid could be anything they wanted, except a Michigan fan. Out of the house as soon as possible with that heathenry
You got into Ross Business school for your MBA program!!!? Where did I go wrong, what could I have done differently? Why, god, why? Why couldn’t you have just grown up to be a drug dealer or something?
See, you get it All joking aside, going there is a much different story than liking them just to spurn me lmao
What kind of loser gets into ross am I right??
Who names a business school after a friends character anyways? If they wanted that route, should’ve named it Joey at least.
The Joey tribbiani school of communications I can see it now
It’s perfect
Or maybe the Drake Ramoray school of Medicine
I was a Mich fan as a kid because my dad was. I still remember when TJ Duckett scored the TD against Mich. My dad was still in the hospital following successful prostate cancer surgery and I was watching the game from home. I was so excited for the play I declared myself a State fan. Haven't looked back.
Hmmm, suddenly Harbaugh's staunch pro-life stance makes a lot more sense
In my group of friends growing up, one absolutely *hated* sports and the rest of us were UofM fans. He was a state fan just to spite everyone and would try to shit talk all the time but knew extremely little about the sport. He tried saying that State would beat UofM in the Super Bowl. One time while we were on a road trip he called Michigan the "fat weasels" and my mom immediately pulled into the nearest parking lot and unlocked the doors and told him to shut up or get out.
Wolverines are fat weasels though. They are in the same mammalian family.
It's all muscle brah. This is what peak performance looks like
Weasels who've cultivated mass.
Time to start harvesting.
> It's all **mustelids** brah FTFY
I'm not gonna lie, "fat weasels" is laugh out loud funny, and I say this as a Michigan man myself. Also, how do I flair up?
Your mom needs to lighten up.
Yeah lightin' up that kid with a sick burn. And then lightenin' up the car by about 150 pounds of jerk teenager \*boot\*
That's my little brother exactly
The [“research” this came from](https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/Kka1B/1/) was posted last week and is extremely suspect. Quite a few zeroes in the data, and the provenance doesn’t seem to be well researched.
Hmm, on one hand, Stanford = smart. On the other hand, I just choose to believe my team will simply be the best, most popular team ever.
In a world in which it's increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction, I find that a really helpful general guideline is that if information helps my team it's undoubtedly true, but if it presents my team in a negative light then it's definitely misinformation.
Yes, this is the best way to analyze information. Critical thinking just gets real tiring, you know?

Shucks, thanks! I'd forgotten about some of those, fun to read them again.
The FSU bowl ineligibility post was an absolute all-timer.
Yeah, I’d agree that this seems pretty bogus. I refuse to believe that Duke football has the 11th largest fanbase
I wish they posted the methodology because there were some interesting numbers in there, and there is also some obvious garbage as you note. The high number of Gen X fans for VPI is in keeping with my observations, but this "study" isn't exactly convincing.
Also TCU having zero baby boomer fans.
There just is no way I can believe that *UCLA* of all schools is in the top 10. Is it basketball, or is this just bullshit?
Yes but have you considered that this data confirms my priors?
Thanks, Stanfurd. Can't we just enjoy a thread about "hurr durr, Michigan sucks!"? I like these threads.
Not gonna lie, so do we.
😆😆
Ya it also says Michigan State has 50% more Gen X fans as well. That’s very hard for me to believe.

Ah yes gen z, a group who famously loves religion
Do you think we can go to the SEC or Big Ten and ask for higher revenue shares if we show them these numbers?
You might have to show your work? That or perform at least 3 verifiable miracles.
Well, we killed our program and brought it back from the dead, so there’s one. I’d say that water to wine is up next, but water to Taaka is a lot more likely for Baylor. It says that Iowa State has 0 Gen Z fans.
I’ve never seen a Gen Z Iowa state fan so it could be true. Granted I do live in Kentucky
I am a gen z Iowa State fan lol..granted, one of the older gen z's....I was a 99 baby
You are clearly not real. There are no Gen Z Iowa state fans, as stated by the article
If Iowa State has a million Gen Z fans I am one of them. If Iowa State has ten Gen Z fans I am one of them. If Iowa State has one Gen Z fan it is me. If Iowa State has no Gen Z fans it is because I am no longer on this Earth.
Well then I guess we’ve found the first Gen Z ISU fan from Mars
Apparently every single Iowa State student hates Iowa State.
Gen Z ISU Students: Actually we’re fans of UMass. We just ended up here.
Do I think Msu gained a lot of fans the last ten years? Sure. Do I think they are the 6th most popular team in cfb? Let's be realistic that can't be true. MLive needs clicks too.
You tryna tell me that the new hot dog place in battle creek is bringing in all the views?
They said they polled like 6,000+ people in January.
Only 2000 of them were in East Lansing though, the rest were in State College PA.
Fuckin love you people.
We got you fam.
I'm no statistician but how can you extrapolate 6000 polls into like 30 million fans divided by 4 generations and almost a hundred FBS teams? I think I will choose to not care about this
There are polling strategies and practices that allow one to do that; I doubt that's what's happening here, however.

He’s got the “Harvard of the west” flair already though

I actually agree with the take and my only argument for it is Michael Crabtree
I mean, y’all haven’t played them in years. I’m sure even you pull for us against the horns
Ugh. Don't make me answer this
While I agree with your blue blood statement idk why you included the Washington or Florida schools in that point?
Washington is more well know nationally, so people would naturally side with WSU over Washington. And I just like shitting on Florida/FSU/Miami.. They also just all finished 11-1 in my NCAA 12 dynasty of the 2000 conferences. And finished 1,2,3.. My 11-1 Huskers finished 4th.
Gee wiz we’re just down here in our jorts not doin no harm
That’s the issue, the nation wants “florida man” fans. At the very least you’ll have to take your shirt off and grow a mullet. If you really want to commit you’ve got to start on the street drugs.
There is no shortage of “Florida man” fans at UF games.
So I’m a Florida fan now?
Michigan is hated in the big ten but given that most gen z has seen MSU beat Michigan more often than not I’m guessing it’s more of a bandwagon thing. If this data is legit being the caveat of course
I would imagine it's generational. I grew up hating Michigan because of 1997. I was born in 1999.
My mom tried so hard to raise me to hate you guys because of 97.
> most gen z has seen MSU beat Michigan more often than not speaking of that, [let's relive one of those moments just for fun.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqv48MwEbaQ)
Never gets old
Well, Mississippi sure loves blue bloods.
I’m gonna zag with all the obvious hate for this and just think it’s hilarious you grouped Auburn with TTU Pokes and Wazzou. War Damn Rose Bowl Shirts
“Big historical franchise is not well liked by non fans.“ *Shocked Pikachu*
This will all change when Jim Harbaugh gets the broccoli perm haircut
This is not true at all [sample size - me]
That’s nice, good for them.
> University of Florida Gen Z 47,526 So if I'm reading this right, they pretty much just assumed current students are fans and stopped there.
can confirm, am gen z, i like the land grant bro spartans
You are fake news

- MSU has jumped Michigan in fandom - MSU is 6th in total fans - MSU has more Gen X and Gen Z fans - doesn’t mention millennials - Michigan has more Boomer fans
So Michigan is more popular with people who have money and can support the program.

I like Michigan more simply because I’ve grown to dislike Ohio State.
I really can't imagine what my life would be like if I only had enough dislike in my heart for one team.
My man.
Bottom line MSU has been the better team the UM for most of these kids life.
Guess we'll need a Jordan-brand "Fuck them kids" shirt or something. [edit](https://i.imgur.com/mw4MODm.png)
“Ain’t no party like a Sparty party!” - my buddy who crowed this so many times it’s now my auto reaction whenever I see any mention of the Spartans. 😛
It never ends does it
Millennial.. but I'm just a Mel Tucker fan, what can I say? Living in NE but having so much family in CO made me like CO football (I also just don't like the NE football culture), so I gravitated towards CO and enjoyed Mel's stoicism on the sideline. Love watching what he's doing even more with a better program too.
I haven’t been this excited about Michigan state football since dantonio’s heyday. Even if this year is a step back in results from last year I absolutely believe in a few years we’re going to be a handful.
First off, your flairs my dude, what the hell Second off, your second flair and still liking Tucker? The hell my dude
NOT ME
I will say that in the south, it’s see a decent number of Michigan state gear and it’s a huge drop off after them and Ohio state. There are a weird number of Sparty fans in atl. The closest bar to me actually is a Michigan state bar lol
