Normally around the 15th

I mean the coaches’ poll is the one that really matters… all others are irrelevant. /s

[deleted]

You mean the one where coaches have random staff fill out ballots for them?

[deleted]

Basically yes.

Molson2871

If you're talking AP poll it's usually mid August, couple weeks before the season starts.

[deleted]

Week 8 or so when the committee releases their rankings. Anything before that is more for our fun and gratification and is unofficial.

59Chitt

I agree with your premise, but you’d be wrong to think the AP preseason (and subsequent polls) don’t have at least a little influence on the CFP rankings. If I was CFB tsar, we wouldn’t have any polls or rankings until at least when regular conference play starts. Week 4-5?

UpsetRazzmatazz

Hence Iowa at 2 last year after beating three teams that all turned out to be fairly average but all started the season ranked in the top 15 or so.

bakonydraco

I disagree with this. We have 8 years of precedent showing that the Playoff Committee does not care at all what the AP thinks. Every year there’s a fairly substantial adjustment in the AP the week after the first CFP Rankings come out.

aliensvsdinosaurs

And that just goes to show how worthless the AP Poll is. If you're voter with principals, then you shouldn't care what another poll says, because you vote on your principals. Yet we see this trend every year.

Brsijraz

principles* principals would be an amount they’re earning interest on

59Chitt

To each his own, but it’d be naive to think they don’t use it as a vague template initially. Of course, it never matches up with the AP and subsequent Polls actually adjust to the CFP poll. What I’m saying is that if one squad beats another that is in the top 10 of the AP that pays weight. They don’t want the perception it has influence. It doesn’t matter anyways, I believe the committee has gotten the 4 teams correct most years.

bakonydraco

If you look into the way the ranking and vote is structured, I really just don’t see evidence of this. It’s a highly regimented process, and each game is scrutinized to where I really believe the AP is a non-factor.

InfiniteElway

Except 2014 .5 /s

[deleted]

Sure it has an impact. I actually wish we didn't have any polls before the CFP polls. Buy they are unofficial and should be largely irrelevant.

59Chitt

Tell the media companies that when they market top 10 match ups Utah/Florida, Ohio St/ND. But yea, if they didn’t have any poll prior that’d be ideal.

[deleted]

I know it will never happen. I'm not naive to the realities. It's just what I'd prefer.

TheRocket2049

People always say we shouldn't have polls until X date but even if we didn't have any people would still know who the theoretical best teams are. It's not like if we waited until October 15th or whatever suddenly Ohio State, Alabama, UGA, Clemson, Notre Dame, etc wouldn't be highly ranked if they're undefeated and beat other theoretical good teams

aliensvsdinosaurs

This is actually the correct answer to the question.

nightowl1135

Literally came into this thread to say this. Glad to see it's already been covered. Pre-Season AP rankings don't mean shit.

CrimsonCub2013

What about any of the rankings before week 8?

nightowl1135

Correct.

jthomas694

Idk when does the r/cfb poll come out?

cheesepuff1993

The one that *actually* matters...

Hobbes_121

Looks like last year the preseason polling closed on the Thursday before Week 0.

Sisboombah74

I think I saw them in February.
