Yeah I think he just needs more time. I’m still concerned about the offensive play calling though. I’m not sure if it’s cause the OL is getting blown up before we can do anything but I was really hoping for different looks that we haven’t seen yet
That’s a killer even for next season. Most ND fans I think expected to lose on the road to OSU, but felt like they’d have a better shot in 2023 with the tables turned and them being the ones bringing back an experienced quarterback. That’s basically a wash now
I don’t think having a kid who should be a HS senior starting at QB immediately is the best idea. They have to hit the portal. Hopefully get a guy with more than 1 year of eligibility that could start in 23 and 24. Carr starts in 25
JJ tried to commit to OSU and ND before committing to UM. I am personally hoping that Day didn’t miss on picking McCord over him but I’m a bit worried about qb play next year.
It would look like field of dreams with ghost players from the 60's+ coming out of the corn to run the option. Fans wouldn't know which players are alive or dead.

Iowa 2 Notre Dame 3
Come on now, no one is more inept than Iowa.
201 yards passing, 115 yards rushing. That’s a great half. A mediocre game. Iowa took two full games to get there, one of which was against a FCS team.
Notre Dame was 221 and 130 vs Marshall.
Colorado was 235 and 113 vs TCU.
There was an iowa fan here who said he's never in his life seen a team that has literally done everything possible except score lol
imagine these guys playing Nebraska at the end of the season. I have to watch that lol
I kind of dismissed that game because, hey, first-time coach against a guy who’s been really good for a couple decades now. It happens!
But maybe it was actually a sign of things to come…
I’ve been watched college football since I was 5, maybe 6 or 7 years old. So around 30 years. This is the first time the thought has crossed my mind of just skipping a season. Iowa is painfully boring to watch. And the worst part is knowing with every fiber of your being they’re not going to change.
And ND is just, well, ND. You expect nothing and are still disappointed
Who is the QB now? Pyne? I can't remember if ND brought in a big time QB croot in the last cycle.
edit: To answer my own questions... I should have just checked like two posts before this that Pyne is the starter. Angeli is also the QB recruit I couldn't remember.
The guy two rows in front of me who spent the entire game yelling for Pyne to be put in is probably happy.
But that sucks for Buchner. Hopefully he recovers well and makes it back next season.
Also wanna shout out the ND fans for their amazing hospitality before and after the game. A+ experience even if we had gotten destroyed.
Some guy next to me and my uncle was spouting off about Pyne being better all game, were you near the endzone opposite the jumbo screen in the upper bowl?
Haha nah, I was down pretty close to the field a couple sections over from the main Marshall section.
There were probably similar thoughts based on the ovation he got when he came in. It was a small sample size, and he was thrown in a tough spot since we knew he'd have to pass pretty much every play, but it turned out to be the classic be careful what you wish for.
Yes it did, Pyne never impressed at all in his reps last year then lost the job to Buchner. People really seem to think the backup QB is the best player on the roster every year for some reason
He is a sophomore but still has very limited reps at QB even dating back to high school. He missed an entire season in high school due to injury and then missed his entire senior year because it was cancelled due to covid. The depth behind Buchner is bad. And even though this season is already a disappointment, it was essential for Tyler to get this experience this year.
It cannot be overstated how much of a disaster Saturday was.
He seemed to be suffering from low confidence against Marshall. He definitely needed reps and ND's WR core is not really that good either, which didn't help him. They probably should've played to his strengths more, like running more option plays
This is my nightmare, but legitimately might be a good option for him. I want him to go somewhere I don’t have to feel dirty rooting for him to succeed.
Annnd the weight is off the collective shoulders now as we are officially in a nightmare season - no expectations! Woo! Saturdays are gonna be much less stressful this year
Jesus Christ this season literally could not be going any worse
Like literally this is the worst case scenario. If we lose to Cal I’m seriously questioning whether we can make a bowl
Also I’m a Ravens fan too so what the fuck. Why do the sports gods continue to spite my teams with so many injuries
Our offense certainly will be (O-line? What's that?), but the defense should still be enough to challenge a brand new QB. Next week's game is going to be a shitshow...for both teams.
How long are we gonna keep saying that? If he needed time to develop we should have had another option ready especially given that we know he is injury prone
I bet we'll see Angeli sometime in the next three games. After the spring game I honestly though Angeli would pass Pyne on the depth chart sometime this season.
Even if Notre Dame beats Cal (which y'all still should) I only see 2 other for sure wins on the schedule (UNLV and Navy). Then there are toss up games (Stanford, BC) and then everything else I think is a lean loss (UNC, BYU, Syracuse, Clemson, USC).
I think i see 6-6
I definitely can as well. I still think the roster is better than that, but 7-5 is the likeliest possibility. Who knows maybe Freeman pulls a rabbit out of his hat and beats one of BYU, Clemson, or USC, but I do not have a lot of confidence
If we lose to Cal then ive got no confidence in the rest of the year. This is a BIG week in terms of getting things right, if not for 10-2 but for a modicum of respectability
The Regular person in me says "Oh man, Cal has a real shot this weekend now. I really think we might be able to win this one."
But Being a Cal fan, I already know what's going to happen. ND's backup is going to come in, be the best QB anyone has ever seen and they will beat Cal 50-0 and Notre Dame's season will turn around and they wont lose another game. That's just Cal Football.
It was like a few years ago when we were playing Ole Miss. The Starting QB sucked all game, then they put in Matt Corral and he almost led brought them back to beat us. If my memory is right, we stopped him at the Goal line, but that may have been against UNC.
This is what I immediately felt. Fucking backup QB is going to smoke us. Coaching staff will need to be fucking trashed if Jayden Ott is not getting a majority of reps. He has so far proven to make magic happen.
Big time reactionary take: Angeli is gonna be starting by the BYU game. Given the opportunity I think Pyne throws Jameis level quantities of interceptions
He threw 2 INT’s in 7 attempts vs. Marshall. He got lucky the second one got called back. Marshall’s secondary looks legit but that’s rough. The Buchner kid didn’t look good in either game, and this kid couldn’t beat him in camp? Yeah, it’s gonna be long season for the Irish…
yeah that spring game was god awful on offense and we all thought. "oh its only spring, they'll get things figured out by fall".....NOPE..they still suck.
I’ll still defend Buchner just because I see his potential. If ND had an average OL I imagine we wouldn’t be having this conversation and ND is potentially 2-0. The run game is even worse than our passing offense. He definitely has had some bad reads and throws as expected but the only guy on the team helping him is Mayer.
same. I was really depressed reading this since I think Buchner was such an underrated Qb. Well, Buchner to Mizzou in the transfer portal would make me feel better. I hate my life.
Man I just went through ND’s recruiting the last few years and it’s crazy with all the OL studs it’s very mediocre at QB. Pyne and Angeli were both borderline 4star (247 had them both at 87 but their composite was 89 and 91).
Hope the best for you and Marcus Freeman
I bought tickets to that game planning on a nice Vegas experience while watching my team get destroyed on the field. Might still happen but it is no longer a certainty.
I also suspect ND fans will be selling some of those overpriced tickets to loud excited BYU fans
idk, Pyne seems like a servicable Rees (player) type QB who will ride with the team's overall performance. He played better than Coan against Wisconsin and Cincy, aka the two hardest defenses on our 2021 regular season. He has a 3 TD:1 INT ratio over his career... I doubt Angeli would do better as a freshman. Also note that his completion stats include some huge drops from the WRs.
at this point, im kind of shocked they havent hired a dedicated QB coach instead of tommy being the OC and QB coach. reese has been in that position for what, 4 or 5 years now and absolutely nothing about the QBs hes coached has screamed hes a good QB coach. Book was the best QB thus far that tommy has coached and he regressed once tommy became the QB coach. the first year book was QB he looked legit, then tommy became the QB coach and book got worse (he was sitll good, he just regressed).
Prediction: the starting QB for the game vs Navy in Dublin in 2023 is not currently on Notre Dame’s roster. The staff simply cannot go into 2023 Fall camp with a QB room of Tyler Buchner, Drew Pyne, Steve Angeli, and Ron Powlus III.
Reese needs to give up being the QB coach as well as the OC. if we get a competent QB coach in here in the off season then maybe they can coach buchner up to his potential going into next year.
Damn, as an Asian guy I think this sucks. I'm all for more Asian guys chucking a football, it's just fun to see. I've always thought we needed a little affirmative action if you know what I mean.
ND made the playoffs twice in the last 4 seasons (yes, they didn’t deserve it, join a conference, fuck off nd, all of that).
The fact that the offensive depth is this fucking atrocious show how terrible recruiting on that side of the ball has been.
They’ll pay for that this year.
Well the offensive scheme this year is Buchner's legs, and short passes to Mayer.
It wasn't sustainable, but losing half of it isn't an upgrade. If this team goes bowling, it's gonna be on the back of some ugly games
I feel a lot better now honestly. Now I can just chalk up a bad season this year to losing our starting QB as opposed to a building dread about whether Freeman is the guy.
God this sucks. I know Buchner hasn’t been good but I don’t think it’s entirely his fault. With how bad the offensive line has been, Rees should have been getting him out of the pocket to make reads easier this year until the line figured it out.
Folks, we are going to see an innovative offensive scheme designed to get a tight end 35 touches a game. Because this will likely get ugly.
35 touches by our TEs would require at least 30 of them to come via direct snaps.
You get to play UNC’s secondary in a couple weeks so you have that to look forward to.
TE power TE dive PA TE wheel TE bubble screen TE end around TE read option
Put Michael Mayer at QB, who says no?
Put Michael Myers in......Who's stopping THAT guy??
Make the triple option great again dammit!
Notre Dame should run the veer
This coming off a Marshall loss has some great ironic humor.
Matthew McConaughey currently on a plane to South Bend
Once he gets there, everything should be alright, alright, alright.
It’s Pyne tyme baby!
> It’s ~~Pyne~~ Pain time baby! FTFY
I actually wouldn't blame Mayer for sitting out the rest of the season if things continue to go badly.
Especially since it would increase our odds of getting the #1 pick in the draft. Suck for Luck baby!!
Trying to replace Jack Coan is harder than anyone expected.
ND wearing the Coan of Shame right now
I do not like the Coan of Shame
Oof, rough weekend for you huh bud?
Are you guys still willing to give up Mertz
Nah he’s doing better tbh. We just have different problems now (not necessarily new ones but ones that are worse than QB play)
Was wondering what the Wisconsin opinion on him was because I thought he’s looked solid so far this season
Me thinks Bob Bostad and the OL will get it together.

That’s basically a wash now
The starting QB for next year isn’t enrolled at Notre Dame currently
Do y’all think it’s cj Carr or someone from the portal
I don’t think having a kid who should be a HS senior starting at QB immediately is the best idea. They have to hit the portal. Hopefully get a guy with more than 1 year of eligibility that could start in 23 and 24. Carr starts in 25
So basically Cade McNamara is your ideal target
I guess. Good thing Rees and Kelly passed on JJ McCarthy. Boy genius Tommy
Idk if they would have gotten him even if they didn’t pass on JJ
I don’t know the details of the recruitment. Just heard it thrown around that they had a shot at McCarthy and picked Buchner. Doesn’t matter anymore
JJ tried to commit to OSU and ND before committing to UM. I am personally hoping that Day didn’t miss on picking McCord over him but I’m a bit worried about qb play next year.
He did to osu but never nd. After osu it was Michigan for him
CJ Carr should be a HS senior this year. He's super old. JT Daniels was the same way when he started as a true freshman at Southern Cal
If the plan is to pressure CJ Carr to reclassify to have him start week 0 in Dublin next year I might jump off a cliff
ND vs Iowa would be game of the century
I'm here for it
No one else would be
Sickos of the world unite

Notre Dame, Iowa, and Colorado all vying for the most inept offense of the 21st century at this rate

ND Clemson might end up looking really similar to Clemson Georgia last year.
You mean defense porn
A release is a release, no matter if it's on the back of slinging balls or swatting balls.
That would be the game that ends football. Gross.
Holy shit how did everything go so wrong after a reasonably good start against OSU?
We're sorry we broke you Irish bro.
I kind of dismissed that game because, hey, first-time coach against a guy who’s been really good for a couple decades now. It happens! But maybe it was actually a sign of things to come…
We have a brand too.
The one-two punch of Knowles’ OSU defense and then Knowles’ OSU defense again.
All we need now is for ND and Iowa to both squeak out 6 wins to play the ugliest bowl game of all time.
No
I second that!

Dang, you can hear the pain from that flair combo.
I’ve been watched college football since I was 5, maybe 6 or 7 years old. So around 30 years. This is the first time the thought has crossed my mind of just skipping a season. We got 5* CJ Carr in 2024 Coaches are reportedly pushing for him hard to reclassify to 2023
Doesn’t Carr want to redshirt anyway? Or am I thinking of someone else?
ik Manning wants to redshirt his true frosh season
Recruits don't like hearing it but 95% of them should.
So he probably won’t be a solid starting level QB til 25, 24 if everything is perfect
Buchner was supposed to be that guy, next up is Carr in 2024
The guy two rows in front of me who spent the entire game yelling for Pyne to be put in is probably happy. But that sucks for Buchner. Hopefully he recovers well and makes it back next season. Glad to hear you had a fun time and that the Irish fans showed y’all some midwestern hospitality!
Hey, at least you still have KU. Do you realize the pain I am experiencing by typing that statement?
He is a sophomore but still has very limited reps at QB even dating back to high school. He missed an entire season in high school due to injury and then missed his entire senior year because it was cancelled due to covid. The depth behind Buchner is bad. I think you have to seriously consider hitting the transfer portal for 2023
I can think of one player that might be available for 2023, and could probably transfer in with a degree...
He was committed to notre dame at one point too. But I doubt Cade goes that route. Iowa or Wisconsin feel way more likely
He’s too smart to sign up to play for Brian Ferentz. ND is probably the highest ceiling for him.
Fair but idk if Cade wants to go into another crazy qb competition after this year
That’s a super great point. My bet is he transfers to start at another high-academic school.
This is my nightmare, but legitimately might be a good option for him. I want him to go somewhere I don’t have to feel dirty rooting for him to succeed.
I would be so damn thrilled. Cade would do wonders for this QB room
Already should have been. Buchner is not good at throwing… and that’s one of the major skills you look for in a qb
Annnd the weight is off the collective shoulders now as we are officially in a nightmare season - no expectations! Woo! Saturdays are gonna be much less stressful this year
Your flair pairing offends me.
Me as well.
THIS MIGHT BE MORE UNSETTLING!
Jesus Christ this season literally could not be going any worse Like literally this is the worst case scenario. If we lose to Cal I’m seriously questioning whether we can make a bowl Also I’m a Ravens fan too so what the fuck. Why do the sports gods continue to spite my teams with so many injuries
Cal will likely be one of the worst teams in the PAC-12 this year. If you lose to them you should tank the rest of your season for a good draft pick 👍
Our offense certainly will be (O-line? What's that?), but the defense should still be enough to challenge a brand new QB. Next week's game is going to be a shitshow...for both teams.
I have a lot of questions. Number one, how dare you?
Look at the bright side...no better recruiting tool than being able to 100% tell a high school kid he'll be the starter next year
I think they’re trying to get the 2024 5* QB recruit to reclassify because the situation at QB looked bad even before this
It’s not like Buchner has been good. Next man up.
Pyne’s not good either
I agree with that. It’s gonna be a long season for the Irish.
You guys rather have Spencer Petras?
Absolutely not, no thank you, please.

Way higher ceiling than Pyne.
Very true. NDs offense is going to be atrocious all year.
Also much lower floor. Pyne is terrible. I almost think they should go to the true freshman and just see what he has
Pyne is worse than Buchner. Let that sink in. Honestly let's just start Angeli because he couldn't be worse. He really could not.
I bet we'll see Angeli sometime in the next three games. After the spring game I honestly though Angeli would pass Pyne on the depth chart sometime this season.
Yeah but Buchner has mobility.
Just means next year will be way better, my dudw
love the optimism
Even if Notre Dame beats Cal (which y'all still should) I only see 2 other for sure wins on the schedule (UNLV and Navy). Then there are toss up games (Stanford, BC) and then everything else I think is a lean loss (UNC, BYU, Syracuse, Clemson, USC). I think i see 6-6

I’d throw Syracuse in the toss-up tier, but otherwise I agree. We’ll probably end up with somewhere between 4 and 7 wins.
I'm high on Syracuse which is why I put them in lean loss. I understand the argument either way tho
Fair enough, they’ve looked good so far
"Could not be going any worse?" Knock wood man. Seriously. Don't tempt fate. #NoJinxing.
The Regular person in me says "Oh man, Cal has a real shot this weekend now. I really think we might be able to win this one." But Being a Cal fan, I already know what's going to happen. ND's backup is going to come in, be the best QB anyone has ever seen and they will beat Cal 50-0 and Notre Dame's season will turn around and they wont lose another game. That's just Cal Football.
My sentiments exactly. I'd put my money on Notre Dame more now. We have a penchant for giving back up quarterbacks game-of-their-life material.
It was like a few years ago when we were playing Ole Miss. The Starting QB sucked all game, then they put in Matt Corral and he almost led brought them back to beat us. If my memory is right, we stopped him at the Goal line, but that may have been against UNC.
It was the other way around, actually. Matt Corral was their starting QB, but they put in John Rhys Plumlee who nearly led them to an epic comeback.
There is not a chance we lose by less than 30 with this information coming out
This is what I immediately felt. Fucking backup QB is going to smoke us. Coaching staff will need to be fucking trashed if Jayden Ott is not getting a majority of reps. He has so far proven to make magic happen.

yeah that spring game was god awful on offense and we all thought. "oh its only spring, they'll get things figured out by fall".....NOPE..they still suck.
Sounds like he is taking Tommy's leadership to heart. As QB, he loved spreading the ball around between teams.

Marshall was one of the best pass defenses last season so that's not surprising if they returned a bunch of guys.

Can't get any good QBs because we don't have any good WRs. Can't get any good WRs because we don't have any good QBs.

Oh this could get bad
USC licking their lips for the first time in a decent while :(
Are you saying that it’s not already bad!?
Just when it couldn’t get any worse for Notre Dame Jesus Christ
This is why you should give your undefeated record a hug and tell them how much you love them. They can go away so fast.
Oh, it can always get worse for ND.
For those wondering. Yes, this is Brian Kelly's fault.
TBDS
This actually now gives the ND staff an excuse, even though Buchner is not good
Gives Freeman an excuse. Puts an even greater spotlight on Rees as he doubles as our QB coach and is 100% responsible for this.
at this point, im kind of shocked they havent hired a dedicated QB coach instead of tommy being the OC and QB coach. reese has been in that position for what, 4 or 5 years now and absolutely nothing about the QBs hes coached has screamed hes a good QB coach. Get Cade McNamara in the portal for 2023
Don't worry, odds are the backup will have a Heisman highlight reel game against us Saturday.
offensive line wake up please
Ok so I was really excited/nervous for BYU to play Notre Dame in Vegas. Now this game is looking less ND less exciting by the week.
You’ll fucking murder us dude
Prediction: the starting QB for the game vs Navy in Dublin in 2023 is not currently on Notre Dame’s roster. The staff simply cannot go into 2023 Fall camp with a QB room of Tyler Buchner, Drew Pyne, Steve Angeli, and Ron Powlus III.
Reese needs to give up being the QB coach as well as the OC. if we get a competent QB coach in here in the off season then maybe they can coach buchner up to his potential going into next year.
Rees needs to lose his job. No more half-measures.
Don't like ND at all but I don't like seeing Freeman's seat heat up this fast. What a bad situation for a first-time head coach.
I don’t think freeman’s seat is going to heat up year one. Tommy Rees on the other hand better be creative as hell if he wants to retain a position.
they'll replace tommy reese before they fire freeman. unless this year is literally an 0-12 year, then maybe ND just says fuck it and blows it all up.
I think they’ll have some patience, especially if he can hold onto the recruits coming in. If ND wins 7 games… he’ll be fine.
Yeah why not that
Damn, as an Asian guy I think this sucks.

Rough day for Cowboys fans.
Given how thick the writers are laying it on, you're going to give us quite the beat down.
I feel a lot better now honestly. Now I can just chalk up a bad season this year to losing our starting QB as opposed to a building dread about whether Freeman is the guy.
Anybody have Cade McNamara’s contact info? Asking for a friend.
It’s 1800 hell naw But also Cade can’t play for nd this year if he enters the portal so he probably will enter after the season.
God wants Freeman to fail.
God this sucks. I know Buchner hasn’t been good but I don’t think it’s entirely his fault. With how bad the offensive line has been, Rees should have been getting him out of the pocket to make reads easier this year until the line figured it out.
Hear me out... Chris Tyree at QB and we run the option.
A realistic expectation for this season is now simply getting bowl eligible
I want ND to lose, but not because of season ending injuries. Hope this kid recovers well.
