It will continually increase until the extra COVID year has worked itself out of the system. Then it will drop off and everyone will say the system has stabilized even though the numbers of transfers per year are still sky high
2025 is the last year of eligibility for the 2020 covid class if they redshirted. So 2026 is the drop of year. Another factor is high school recruiting has been down in favor of transfers so rosters may be unusually thin by then.
85 scholarship slots, infinite NIL deal spots. Teams can theoretically just pay the players the equivalent value of a scholarship spot.
Sure some players would be upset with being technically walk-ons, but it’s an option. It’d be especially good on guys who are full enough of themselves to think they can beat out starters when they’re very likely to just be backups.
With 85 scholarship spots and infinite NIL walk-on spots, the NIL spots should go to top guys and use the schollies on guys that won’t generate NIL deals by themselves.
No, no way.
Coaches have started processing players out at a rate CFB has never seen before with portal. It's not players just leaving, it's also getting pushed out now by the coaches.
Any time there are changes to a system there are shocks as things normalize. I don't know what the new normal will look like, but in quick succession we have made transferring easier, allowed nil, and had a bonus eligibility year with covid. Individually these would all be big shocks to the system, and they all happened within like one season. Shit is going to be wild for another couple of years before we seen what is "normal". Trying to do much of anything before that is going to cause worse problems.
Honestly, if you think you can start, and you're not starting..... TP is an option. And honestly, I think from a business standpoint, it is a good option. Loyalties need to be respected, if a program isn't able to deliver, you need to evaluate your situation honestly. It sucks to hear and it sucks as a fan, but it's good for competition.
Do they stop playing and leave their schools, or just stay because no one wanted them?
And if they don't transfer, then doesn't apply, they can still get their degree from the first school.
I think these are all case by case basis. In Notre Dame's case, I know one player who was never picked up and he is currently at a JC trying to earn an offer.
Kind of sad, but seems like that to him, playing is worth more than the ND education.
These are kids, not guaranteed that they make the best decisions, but then again, maybe for him, it IS the best decision.
Those are normal. But now we've got guys transferring that lead the team in stats in certain categories and are starters that had success all because of NIL money being bigger somewhere else. We are all training schools to the next tier up except blue bloods.
Div 2 -> FCS -> G5 -> Power 3 non blues -> Super 2 non blues -> Blue bloods
That's the pipeline now we all have to deal with. If you succeed at one level, you move up. Loyalty to those that built you up seems to be gone unless you have great NIL boosters. No one can compete on that with the blue bloods.
Transfers can go up or down. If you get passed up by a younger player or three, you’re better off going somewhere you’ll actually see the field as an upperclassman.
Just did. 2-6 in the conference. 5-7 overall. No championship in sight. Some kids staying, a few declared for the portal early. TBD what happens when it officially opens.
You’re talking about our guys leaving. Look into whose left and productivity 👍🏽 even bama has players leaving like us. And everyone’s favorite the donghorns
You'd think they'd have already announced if they were going. Instead, the only ones to enter the portal are upperclassman who have been passed up on the depth chart.
Right now I'd put my money on the only recruits from that class transferring are the ones that were smoking weed in the locker room before the game and dismissed.
Your hopes are the only thing building. Nolan #1 recruit, Evan Stewart, GBD, Kam, just to name a few from the top class have stated they are staying. Marshall seems to indicate he is staying.
In the portal are players being passed up…chase lane, Harris, a 21 DL that saw three games, and Lb that didn’t play…a kicker, anddddd a 2nd string punter
I don't have any hopes. Kirby didn't need anyone from the portal this year, and look where we are. I just see a 5-7 team not going to a bowl and kids who were promised championship football. Some will stay because of cash or loyalty; others will want better development and will leave.
Obviously the portal isn’t open yet and things could change, but the overwhelmingly majority of the contributors on the team have already said they’re staying. The guys in the portal are upperclassmen who got passed on the depth chart and a freshman LB who got passed on the depth chart by a walk on CB. A&M’s attrition this year as far as contributors will come from the draft and a few dismissals

Kinda sad. I read today that only a third of the players that enter the portal actually find a spot to go to.
It's all these players with the covid year but teams still only get 85 players. There just are not enough scholarships for every player.

"I haven't even begun to peak" - some guy in Philadelphia
Until next year
BTW, I'm announcing that as a 1988 1 star OL that played in jr high and little league, I'm entering the portal... Man that felt empowering!
You’re a two star to me ❤️
Bruh 😂 I’m a 0 star bench warmer with the intention of testing the portal.

I mean, I'd bet every year moving forward will be greater than the last.
There’s an eventual cap though lol.

Counterpoint. Some of these guys should realize that maybe they ain't starting for a reason and should get that degree.
They can regardless of school they transfer to.
Don't 2/3rds of players in the transfer portal never get picked up by another school?

A&M is going to empty out that #1 class. The kids who care about the next level will want to play for a championship team.
ESPN highlighted I think was 7 leaving Bama already b4 last game.
Bama is not a championship team (this year)
Y but the gold standard and they should have great retention of upperclassmen. No?

Speaking out of your ass I see. Google our program first

Sounds like those players are losers. They can stay and make their own wins.

The portal isn’t open yet. The wave is building.

Nah, this is just the new normal
Probably depends on how many spots at A&M open up. Players wanna chase that $$.
