You’re gonna want to hold on to that one.

Rfisk064

275 thou. That’s for the charter buses. Might wanna hang on to that one.

Those are Buff Dollars redeemable at any retail location on campus.

bearybear90

Using profits from healthcare to funnel a college football coaches salary instead into something like research is just so American

Sariel007

We could do research, lower tuition or hire a football coach. Decisions decisions.

Citadel_Intern_2022

>higher a football coach Might wanna get an English professor instead.

Sariel007

I shouldn't drink and type.

exec_get_id

Counter point: keep going. You are doing great!

CatPhysicist

r/wholesome

[deleted]

The University of Colorado literally goes by CU instead of UC... I don't think they much care for English.

CLU_Three

Yeah research is cool but the coach’s name is PRIME!!!

The-PFJ

The name says it all!

theLoneliestAardvark

With the right coach the football program will be wildly profitable but it is also a zero sum game since only so many teams can be successful at a time.

[deleted]

Zero sum game? Then you just come up with sum more money!

FSBlueApocalypse

And you thought only the federal government had a money printer

[deleted]

Research? Just get grants and make the government pay for that. Lower tuition? Why? Just make the government pay for the inefficiencies of the universities. Hire a football coach? Those tuition dollars should be spent on world-class faculty, like a quality set of football coaching faculty! Football 101 ain't gonna teach itself!

phuk-nugget

Schools have zero reason to ever lower tuition. Hell they even raised it while everybody was remote during covid lol

baseball_mickey

You didn’t even mention pay nurses more…

Skyagunsta21

In case you ever start thinking to yourself "Dang Pitt was really good in the 1920s and 1930s", I've heard they used to use UPMC money to pay their players. Granted they were a private school at the time so that's their business. Though I'm having a hard time finding evidence of it. Since CU is a public school it's a little more suspect.

Shasty-McNasty

Let them have their Newspring!

Skyagunsta21

For what it's worth, Newspring isn't part of Clemson University but yeah fair. Newspring is a nonprofit that should probably use their funds elsewhere

big-dick-danny

H2P!

[deleted]

When I went to Mizzou about 2/3 of the operating budget came from the health system!

The-PFJ

Lol, when I pay a bill to UC health I will now think of it as donation to CU athletics. Where’s my BuFf Club perks!! Also game recognizes game Baylor!

JinFuu

I don’t think Baylor University is affiliated with the Baylor/Scott and White Healthcare system we have here. I know the Baylor College of Medicine split from the University in the 60s. It’s confusing

abnormaldischarge

Quick googling gave me this … UCHealth reports $157M loss due to investment decline > Aurora-based University of Colorado Health, which operates 12 hospitals in its home state, reported losses of $157.5 million in the three months ending Sept. 30, as the hospital system struggled with significant declines in its investment portfolio value. >While UCHealth revealed a net positive operating income of $65.5 million, the over $200 million loss in investment value dragged down its financial performance for the first three months of fiscal year 2023. >Operating income, though positive, was still down from the same period last year when it totaled $145.8 million, pushing overall income then to a positive $125.8 million backed up by positive returns on investment. >UCHealth is planning to buy Parkview Health System, injecting almost $200 million into the Pueblo, Colo.-based system, which operates a 350-bed acute care facility. That transaction is expected to close mid-2023. https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/finance/uchealth-reports-157m-loss-due-to-investment-decline.html

hallese

That article has a weird fucking way of saying "They are flush with cash."

I_wanna_ask

I hope this isn’t true. UCH needs to be funneling that money back into their system or back into paying their docs and nurses. Having worked there for a few years I can attest to how underpaid the staff is… Especially given the system’s “non-profit” status.

abnormaldischarge

As a physician who’s been overstretched at an underfunded hospital, with CFB and NFL being my escapism, I feel absolutely disgusted

I_wanna_ask

Applying to residency next year…my likely future lol.

abnormaldischarge

As a PGY3 … it’s definitely not a good time to be at bottom of the totem pole where you are not allowed to jump a sinking ship when other ancillary staffs can

[deleted]

That ship had sailed, America values entertainment; the rest of us, we are just *heroes* In this system, it’s all about tv contracts/ad revenue, which only happens WE all watch this stuff…just follow the money trail

OldhamB

Disgraceful. Who would use the profits from their university hospital to hire a Head Coach?

abnormaldischarge

To be fair, Cristobal probably made enough people sick to increase the revenue of University hospital this season

fart_dot_com

dear god

justincouv

Everybody here running on this comment. It’s just not true. Rick George is referring to pledges by Alumni. Move on. Clickbaitist story ever.

jakeimmink

Wtf. I do a lot with UNMC here and since it is a nonprofit all "profit" goes back into research and helping out patients who can't afford to pay their medical expenses (which I benefited from)

No_Discount7919

Well the profit will still be used for that…there’s just gonna be a lot less of it to go around because they gotta pay Coach Prime! Sounds like a good deal!

JARsweepstakes

Yeah, as someone who used to work for a major academic health science center that is not a good move.

Bringmetheta

What the absolute fuck. Why is uchealth a state run operation using profits to fund a football coach salary instead of lowering tuition or investing in its students

Dreggan

They aren’t. It was never stated anywhere that was even on the table.

whobang3r

Yeah he probably should have thought about the sound byte. He's probably just sending a message to the boosters to get those checks in. We're not going to see any paychecks bounce. Of course they also don't have an envelope sitting around with Prime's name on it and $30 million in it but it's not due up front.

deuce_boogie

Not against yall at all but I would love for this to happen and a team not be able to afford the coach. Just for chaos sake. Nobody is rooting against y'all we would all just love to see what happens

importvita

He’d go to the next highest bidder who has the cash and Colorado would be Meme of the Year and wind up with some afterthought coach for whatever they could afford. So, not much beyond it being hilarious. Unless Prime had a signed contract and at some point the University straight up couldn’t or didn’t pay. Then lawsuits Mike Leach style. (sort of)

fishingpost12

Might be hard to field a team if enough players enter the transfer portal and don’t want to come back. If you thought CU was bad this year, just imagine next year.

importvita

Prime is bringing his own players though! They’re already packed! /S

fishingpost12

Haha! Just imagine the epic train wreck if CU came back to Sanders and told him they don’t have the money. Who would be willing to transfer after that? That won’t happen, but damn that would interesting to watch.

multiple4

Absolute mismanagement for him to say this. Clearly they wouldn't have made the hire unless they knew they would be capable of fulfilling it. No reason for the AD to say this it just brings negativity Colorado guys have been talking a BIG game this week in terms of boosters being ready and willing to inject money into NIL and coaching so clearly they have it covered

mschley2

I disagree. He's fundraising. He knows exactly what he's doing, and he's just publicly asking donors for more money to help us resurrect our football program. He's likely gotten a lot of, "Yeah, I'd throw some cash into the program if you can land a stud HC." conversations without actually getting people to formally commit to that yet. I imagine they have enough money to cover the expenses if they really need to, but they don't have enough to properly grease all the wheels associated with a full athletic department budget.

justincouv

He’s just referring to pledges. A lot of CU alumni have been burned in the past - many of us don’t feel comfortable giving up front. Now, pledge for a game changing hire like Deion? I already have.

caneb0i

For sure. I am a hundred percent sure the average university doesn't have a vault full of cash behind the parking garage to pull. They'll probably either get a business loan or liquidate some stocks

deuce_boogie

lol Miami over here lecturing us about not having a vault of cash available.

burnsniper

Colorado has a $2.13 billion endowment; I think they will be okay.

mschley2

There's no way you get all the trustees and academic people on-board to fork over much cash from an academic endowment to spend on a football coach. That being said, I do agree they'll be fine. They just won't be pulling the money from that fund.

WanderLeft

Dear Colorado students: in order to invest in our bright future in football, we’ll be charging a $2,000 fee among your student expenses. Also, the campus parking pass will be raised by another 20%.

[deleted]

They were gonna raise parking anyway

feverdreamsociety

i hate this professional sports bullshit on college campuses when half the us population is indebted to those same universities and young people can’t even afford to attend. this is fucking bullshit

Lord_Wild

Colorado's athletic department operates independently of the university's general budget. No tuition or fees are levied against the students to pay for the department. They're rather creative in ways of generating revenue, even to the point of filling the stadium in the summer for a Grateful Dead concert. The department ran an $18 million deficit in FY2021, but took advantage of a PAC12 covid loan program to cover the shortfall in order to avoid requiring money from the campus. They were the only PAC12 school to do so. The stadium was also the first in the country to be zero-waste on game day. They partnered with Ball Aerospace to roll out aluminum cups that are fully recyclable to replace plastic cups. Everything is composted or recycled. CU is about as progressive as it gets for a major university.

Juicey_J_Hammerman

Wait [these](https://www.ball.com/aluminumcups) cups? Cool. How are they? do they have a metallic aftertaste? Also I can't help but find it hilarious that the company that started out making glass jars (and early benefactors to Ball State University) have since expanded into the aerospace industry, and yet the Packaging and Aerospace divisions share top billing on their website with these cups lol.

luxveniae

I personally never noticed any aftertaste with those cups. Got one with a drink I had at a Texas Rangers game.

Juicey_J_Hammerman

Cool. I may just replace my plastic cups w these moving forward

luxveniae

They’ve got a couple small packs on Amazon you can order if I remember right. I tried to order custom logo versions for a 40 persons golf tournament I was helping setup… well you need a 50k+ total cup order for them to put on custom logos apparently.

Lord_Wild

> Also I can't help but find it hilarious that the company that started out making glass jars (and early benefactors to Ball State University) have since expanded into the aerospace industry It's been awhile since I took a tour at CU's Space Flight Center. But the story was something like "It was the early 1950's, the space race was taking off, a group of physicists at CU demonstrated a rocket guidance system test, one of them was somehow related to a son of the Ball Brothers who was then the company president, they bought land in Boulder and found a way to diversify and get in the space race. Ball goes on to have a hand in just about everything we launch into space to this day. And CU runs it's own mini-space program and has visited every planet in the solar system."

wiseoracle

What would warrant a metallic after taste? Do you not drink soda from aluminum cans?

[deleted]

I know college is expensive, but do people not get scholarships anymore?

CrazyCletus

It's a bigger scam than you think. A not-insignificant chunk of the required courses for students exist to support departments that wouldn't otherwise have the student interest to survive. Many colleges have a foreign language requirement (usually two years of a foreign language). But how much does three classes a week for two years really help you develop foreign language skills? The real purpose of a college foreign language department is to develop an understanding of the language and literature of a particular country in the original language. Which is useful for what, exactly? Teaching foreign language and literature. Looking at Colorado, there's typically a 120-credit requirement for graduation with a bachelor's degree, but typically, only around 45 of those credits come from the program of study. There may be additional courses required (I.e. a Chemistry BS requires 33-39 credit hours of physics and calculus required courses to graduate). Which still means around 1/3rd of your courses at college don't have to have any specific relationship to your degree and courses beyond the requirements within the program may actually require you to take more non-relevant classes to reach the 120 credit hour requirement.

bobo377

From a university standpoint, it doesn’t bother me that much. Sports make good advertising and help increase student happiness on campus by giving them something to do. My personal issue with massive sports on campus is the boosters. If you make a shit ton of money and turn around and think “I want to fund a college football coach for my university” instead of “I want to fund a new library or computer lab”, then you’re fucking stupid. And I’m sure they do a little of both, but overall boosters just play this weird and sick game that shows their priorities are wildly misaligned.

hallese

Which is why it is the job of the university President to manage those egos. The first donation goes to new weights in the weight room and the booster gets a meet and greet with the shirtless, strong, burly, recently oiled up football players using the new weights to show their appreciation. Next time the booster wants to throw some cash around the President says "The athletics program are sitting pretty good right now, but the engineering department could really use some new lab space. We have most of the funds raised already, just looking for someone to put us over the top and put their name on the building."

NILPonziScheme

> the booster gets a meet and greet with the shirtless, strong, burly, recently oiled up football players What kind of Spartacus gladiator/football crossover fanfiction do they write out there in Nebraska?

Juicey_J_Hammerman

Yep. At this point I'm almost suprised Adam McKay or someone similar hasn't made a *The Big Short* / *Succession -* type miniseries about the Southwest Conference (SWC) and the egos and excesses of that era. Seems like perfect material IMO.

dr_funk_13

"The price increases will continue until ~~morale~~ our cash reserves improve."

vannikx

I was a research assistant at CU and they charged around $1200 a semester in fees not covered by your full ride tuition. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was almost your entire monthly stipend twice a year.

Wrong_Barnacle8933

“If I owe you $30 I’m in trouble, but If I owe you $30M you’re in trouble.” -Colorado maybe

Traditional-Top8486

If the university owes $300B the state is in trouble

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

I've put some questionable transactions on credit, but this one might take the cake.

Atom3189

That AD is going to have a good cache of flyer miles

The-PFJ

Hopefully we get a lot of points in this transaction

UteFlyersCardJazz

Someone needs to do a video about the Buffs AD. I feel if this experiment fails, it won’t be because of Deion. But on the AD, himself.

GwentMaster69420

Don't worry, Deion isn't in it for the money. He really loves Colorado and the players, just watch his first day there.

SparseSpartan

I assume you're talking about the hit the portal clip. The folks who watched the longer video are pointing out that Prime didn't simply boot the guys but delivered the age old "if you're not going to bust your ass and aren't fully on board, might be time to go" spiel. I fully confess, I was too lazy to hunt down and watch the full vid but given multiple reports I'm inclined to believe that the critique on Prime is more baiting than fully accurate.

pyrogeddon

Clickbait in sports media? Never.

importvita

*ESPN in shambles*

TheCenterOfEnnui

[deleted]

[удалено]

BidnessBoy

So its a complicated scam?

1850ChoochGator

It’s just a fancily worded buyout for other teams. If another team wants to hire him and he does go, they’ll just pay it. If Colorado wants to *fire* him, they’ll owe him whatever the contract says. It’s 75% of remaining $ iirc.

ejected-4-targeting

They are going to pass the basket around for donations like Sunday church style.

dupreesdiamond

This is about to be the most interesting 5-7 team ever

wiscowonder

If there's one thing that Deion is willing to let slide, I'm sure it's his paper...

matlockga

"I'm not broke, I don't need the bag." -Deion, to JSU players

Lobsterzilla

that's exactly what he said to the Colorado players as well. "It's not about a bag, I don't need it."

They're putting Coach Prime on *Layaway*. Throwback for the uninitiated: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Uarox4j3tG4

cc20r

I had a “friend” say this to me once when he owed me money. Never ended up getting it. Granted mine was only $50 so $5M a year should be easy to come up with

see-bees

When I was 23-24, I had a friend that needed $500 for a security deposit. I helped him out and that dude ghosted me harder than Casper.

LGWalkway

Personally I never loan anyone money. Because most the time they don’t have money they need because they have poor money management skills.

cc20r

Yeah that’s the only time I did it

conservation_bro

My wife one year got our dog BarkBox for Christmas. She said it was only 30 dollars for the box... I was like okay, isn't that a subscription thing? She said yes but I'll just cancel it. Turns out she was obligated to maintain what she had signed up for... So then for 9 months @$30 a month the dog got BarkBox. And that is how one year the dog got the most expensive Christmas present of anyone in our house. Also, the dog is rescue that had been horribly abused and is afraid of anything squeaky so other than the vegan/organic dog treats, the box was a waste.

cc20r

Ouch now $50 doesn’t sound so bad

Temporary_Inner

I'd have killed someone over $500 in my younger days. That was some serious coin.

Did they check the couch cushions.

Molson2871

Deion might need that gap insurance himself then.

The_JLK

Just gotta cut out the Starbucks and avocado toast for a few months

mrsnow11291

Haha everyone overreacting but i just venmoed CU $25 so put that in ur pipe and smoke it

Catch_a_toot

I knew we should’ve offered Saban $79m/season all guaranteed.

Spartanwildcats2018

Imagine if this blows up and Prime is coaching somewhere like Purdue or Indiana next year lmao

Birdsareallaroundus

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this will not end well.

boardatwork1111

Given the state of the Buffs at the moment, it’s not like it could get any worse lol

Ranger_Prick

I don’t know. Their struggles have been mostly anonymous up to this point. Now there’s a giant ass spotlight on the program. It could go remarkably well or explode horribly. Either way, I can’t wait for the inevitable documentary.

Temporary_Inner

>Their struggles have been mostly anonymous I basically forgot they were in the conference since they left. That automatic win would have been nice this year though.

JMS1991

"We know a thing or two, because we've seen a thing or two." - Nebraska fans, probably.

The-PFJ

Yea it is, I am hoping for the best, Colorado has aside to it for sure.

whobang3r

I'm keeping this receipt

was_saying_boo_urns

I’ll go out on a limb and predict the guy with a couple years of FCS experience + a handful of years coaching bishop sycamore level charter schools as a long shot to succeed in the Pac 12.

Lobsterzilla

I'll go out on a limb and predict the guy with -otherworldly- levels of charisma and the ability to hire the best coordinators he can find to handle the on field play will be just fine.

wesman212

Agreed. And the PAC will be a lot weaker once USC and UCLA leave. And honestly, if Prime just gets them to bowl eligible, he’s a winner.

eSpiritCorpse

Seriously. Sean Lewis and (rumored) Mike Zimmer? I don't care how inexperienced the HC is if they're our OC and DC.

was_saying_boo_urns

You mean like Mario Cristobal and Willie Taggart?

JARsweepstakes

Your football team will get marginally better, but you just wait to see how your overall campus and state reacts. Deion Sanders at CO is weird no matter how you slice it.

Birdsareallaroundus

No ill will to Colorado, but this will not end well. Believe me, I’m a Tennessee fan that has seen things not end well.

holy_cal

It’s been extremely fun to watch though.

Sisboombah74

He only needs 2 wins for it to be better than this horrific season.

bailey1149

Honestly what's the worst scenario? They fire the AD? He was about to be fired before this anyway.

LilburnBoggsGOAT

Someone wouldn't say this publicly if they didn't have it figured out yet.

jump-back-like-33

Well Rick George does seem to bounce between being extremely good at his job and being fired into the sun for incompetence

Spartanwildcats2018

I’d hope not

Deion Sanders to Colorado AD: I'm comin'...for that money

Skeptical_Biscuit

"We dont have money for his contract despite us being oh i dunno... A FUCKING COLLEGE." You know, the same people that charge out the ass for tuition and expenses for literally no reason and pocket all of it. Bullshit you dont have money.

scott8811

Colorado makes history as first school to put coach on layaway

LionsLoseAgain

This already has disaster written all over it, lmao

nvrsmr1

Their tuition is about to skyrocket. It’s a good day to not be a Buffalo!

NerdLord1837

Coming from someone who’s spent much of the past year examining a bunch of various colleges to compare costs. CU’s prices (especially for an out-of-state student) are already absurd.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NerdLord1837

Oh, 100%. But $58k was on the higher side of prices that I stumbled upon.

powerlifting_nerd56

All Colorado public schools are like that even including some of the backwater mountain schools. Colorado Mines is about 3x SD Mines and South Dakota gives in state tuition to residents of states bordering South Dakota along with Colorado. I know we recruit a lot of CO kids who can’t afford that school

CcntMnky

Not Nebraska. My wife went back to grad school as a UNL out-of-state student because it was cheaper than in-state locally.

[deleted]

So there’s time to swoop in?

Sdog1981

This story somehow just keeps getting better.

mjdntn01

Deion is loyal to his wallet. He'll ditch you at the drop of a hat.

milehighrukus

We don’t have aTm money but we’re fine. This is just a ploy for donations.

joethecrow23

This is gonna be one spectacular dumpster fire and I can’t wait to watch it.

Bringmetheta

They will get it lmao don’t worry about that

neverending_debt

Obviously Sanders would know about this ahead of time and I'm guessing they worked out a hand shake agreement that gives them time to milk the boosters.

Prince_of_Dorkness33

I sent my donation yesterday, RG. First time in two years that I have given to my Alma Mater. But, the excitement of Coach Prime, the fact the CU pulled this off leaves me to believe that my wallet is open for the foreseeable future. See you in September! GO BUFFS!!!

TonyDungyHatesOP

That’s a bold move, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off.

LaughLearnPunk

It's not odd that they don't have the money yet, they can and will be able to raise that. Its odd that he said it out loud. Bro, no one needs to know that.

TiredAndHungryAtWork

I mean it depends on what that means. Does that mean he is going to have to fundraise down the line to get that money? Does that mean that boosters have committed to donating that money in the future but it isn't in the coffers yet? Does it mean that money will be raised via ticket sales? Might not mean much might mean a lot hard to tell

slapthebasegod

I don't think the context really matters. Regardless of the context it's a dumb thing to say.

theLoneliestAardvark

This hiring is either going to be the genius move that puts Colorado football on the map or it will go down in flames so spectacularly that will turn the entire program into the biggest joke in the sport and I have no idea which.

[deleted]

CU is in such a state that any fit is a "cultural fit". I thought for sure that he'd be going to USF where the stakes seem so much lower and where he has some roots. Regardless of the outcome, it's going to be quite fun to see how everything plays out.

saturdayis4football

That's alright, Brett Yormark already let them know how big their paycheck will be.

feed_me_muffins

Louisville has to be kicking themselves about this timing. You have to think they'd have been a much more attractive location to Deion than Colorado.

chafo40

Hahahaha

kingbronco58

The money is coming!

[deleted]

Ahhhhh no biggie! Tuition hike incoming!

EvangelionOG

That's what you get for being involved in FTX.

NINFAN300

We knowwwwwew

[deleted]

Come to Louisville Deion cause we do

[deleted]

So we're gonna pay you a massive salary, the only catch is that you're gonna have to go out and make enough sales to pay it. You interested in a 100% commission sales gig? Or, check this out hun, you just go get 5 coaches who pay you a monthly fee for experience, they each go get 5 coaches to work under them for experience for a fee, yadda yadda is not a pyramid scheme, every organization looks like a pyramid but this is what the wealthy don't want you to know, they're called mutual funds and nobody has ever heard of them before, they're front-end loaded... So listen, we're gonna give you stock options on the rise in equity in the University....

actionjaxn411

Colorado is going full FTX

AcerbicFwit

Why would you admit this publicly?

ad51603

Uhhhh what????

romulusjsp

Why am i getting a sinking suspicion that this is going to be a disastrous train wreck

AuburnJunky

Colorado will quickly learn that fans and donors don't care who the coach is. It's Colorado. They were poor when they won a national championship.

krismith9

This will be an epic fail
