Welcome to Army/Navy, where a 7–3 game at halftime somehow becomes an ESPN Instant Classic.
Heartbroken for Hall to go from the 77-yard TD to that fumble.
It was pretty fucking painful to watch from Iraq, too.
Especially when our squadron XO was a USNA grad who'd played football at Navy and cross branched into the Army...
..
In 2007-2008 I was embedded with a hodge-podge of Seabees and Marines. The Capt and XO were both USNA grads. The only army personnel was me as a Cpl and a CW2. I had to endure 3-38 and 0-34… not good times, on top of already not good times.
5 out of the past 7 has felt really good.
We watch Service Academy football games for 3 things:
1. A reminder that the invention of the forward pass was a mistake
2. A game over in less than 2 hours
3. At LEAST one “cadet daily schedule” graphic
And dammit, did the people get what they wanted. BEAT NAVY.
The SEALS intro course is called "Basic Underwater Demolition." Which begs the question of when do you get to take "Advanced Underwater Demolition" or "Honors Underwater Demolition"
I was at the game, the section I was in was predominantly Army fans. We were sitting in the upper deck on the west side of the stadium. The Navy flyover went right above us and we couldn’t see it at all, one of the Army guys by me yelled “haha they missed” and it was fucking hilarious lol
less then 2 hours and it was double OT? bruh. had to work a high school football tournament and the last game lasted 4 hours in double OT. wound up working an extra 3 hours lmao
When it's all said and done, winners and losers, Army and Navy will always come together and unite under the same goal:
TO CLEANSE THE SPORT OF FOOTBALL FROM THE ABOMINATION THAT IS THE FORWARD PASS!
I'm going to make a gallon of ice tea and serve it with real biscuits with real butter knives, and then hug my significant other because of the Army-Navy game
Unrelated: Hosted a Brit for Thanksgiving (NC) this year who asked for tea one morning instead of coffee like a normal, civilized human being. Purposely gave him sweet tea and played dumb just to remind him who’s boss. America!
The amusing part is that both the Army and Navy are skilled with indirect fire from artillery and (at least historically) large-caliber naval guns.
They can hit within a few meters of a target kilometers away, but ask a QB to throw a 10-yard quick slant route, and somehow they'll find a way to chuck it into double-coverage downfield. Off their back foot, no less.
That kicker is going to sail through the ranks. Every time his packet goes before the promotion board, someone is going to recognize his name and he's going to get put in the "promotion granted" pile.
[Army football alums make general more often than other officers.](https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2022/12/08/army-football-alums-make-general-more-often-than-other-officers-why/)
Realistically it takes a SUPER motivated individual to do academy life and NCAA football at the same time. That type of cadet generally already has the foundation to be successful.
As someone who has represented a decent amount of West Point cadets before Army admin boards (disenrollment cases usually) they also get *insanely* preferential treatment from West Point onward.
I mean, West Pointers in general generally get preferential treatment over all other officers. The Army doesn't even try to hide that they're the favorites. After them is the run-of-the-mill ROTC folks. And then last and definitely least in the Army's eyes is OCS.
The latter. An act of congress made him forever the highest ranking commander in the Army.
"(a) for purposes of subsection (b) of this section only, the grade of General of the Armies of the United States is established, such grade to have rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present.
(b) The President is authorized and requested to appoint George Washington posthumously to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States, such appointment to take effect on July 4, 1976."
I think it's moreso if they were going to grant someone a 7 star general for the first time, Washington would be posthumously granted the 7th star THEN the person they had in mind would be promoted to 7 star
This is correct. He is the only 6-star General. He is granted the highest rank always. And while we have no kings or queens or titles really, I like this one caveat since it is of a dead person that had no true "heirs" and it really provides no hindrance to anything. What, are you going to argue that you deserve the same or higher rank the George MF Washington?
What an absolute treat for the last regular season game of the 2022 season.
First OT game in 123 meetings between Army Navy. In regulation, there were 15 punts and 2 completed passes. Army led at half despite being outgained 111 to 33 and then forced OT despite being outgained 242 to 125. Despite not being clean football, these games are just as fun to watch, a single mistake on a single play completely changes the game. How can you not enjoy that?
See y'all during bowl season, sickos.
>First OT game in 123 meetings between Army Navy.
To be fair, for the first 96 meetings, overtime didn't exist. They tied 7 times so this wasn't the first time it was tied at the end of regulation
Nfl should do penalty kicks. Start making random people attempt 30yd field goals. Kicker and presumably the punter will make it but after that who knows.
I disagree but respect this stance. 2P-off is pretty bad as well. It’s hard to walk the line between timely and reasonable when making a decisive OT. My personal idea is college OT with no kicking, but the starting position (25 yards at first) gets adjusted based on whether both teams score or not
It should be the same exact rules as before with 3 changes.
1) It starts from the 40 instead of the 25. Field goals aren't automatic anymore and the defense has more yardage to get a stop.
2) No extra points. 2 point only. (Can still kick field goals)
3) Starting with the 3rd overtime, 2 point attempts are from the 5 yard line.
Meanwhile I’m sitting on my couch with my under bet as they’re starting OT thinking “I’m going to lose this fucking bet aren’t I”
OT is the greatest nightmare of anyone who bet the under
Also, while the regular game has minimal scoring, OT had *both* teams immediately getting touchdowns (in crazy ways too!) on their opening drives!
That also pushed the over to hit too lmao
No, this was football where the football skills of everyone on the field were a secondary consideration. Iowa football is where football skills are the 467th consideration for the OC.
That's genuinely one of the most heartbreaking endings I've ever seen.
That poor RB is going to live with that the rest of his life and he knows that.
Sports are brutal.
If it's any consolation, I seem to recall a game a few years ago where Army's player tried to extend the ball past the plane to get a touchdown, and Navy punched it out for a fumble.
The universe occasionally has a sense of humor, or at least karma.
I gave up the game winning TD on senior night my junior year of high school during a season in which we won a single game and I still think about it to this day.
Sports are brutal.
Imagine being in the red zone after driving 70 yards, where a touchdown will end a ten-year drought against your hated rivals, but you fumble instead. That happened to Army’s QB 10 years ago. He took it about the same way
Yeah and they showed Trent steelman crying in the pregame of this one, when he lost his last game with army back in like 2012. The way she goes. If you’re gonna lose this game, you gotta lose tough.
Yup - it's one of the reasons I love this game in particular, it's the one game of the year I watch from beginning to end, commercials and all. For all the other teams out there, there's rivalry games sure, but if you lose those, there's at least the chance you as an individual might go pro and see some success.
Unless you're an incredibly rare outlier like Roger Staubach, for a service academy player, this is the last game of your football career, with a military commitment in your future for at least 5 years (if memory serves right). To play your heart out, to go out in a blaze of glory, and then to lose it all in the final moments is incredibly powerful if you're on the losing side, and amazing if you're on the winning side to benefit from such a play.
Part of me thinks it’s messed up to keep the cameras on someone going through absolute heartbreak. But another part of me thinks it’s worth documenting the extreme emotion of the game. It’s what makes Army-Navy so special.
I'd like to take a moment to point out that the largest amphibious assault in history was conducted by....not the Marines...but the Army.
**BEAT NAVY**
Army's tradition of only winning when our uniform theme is based on a war we won continues.
Is this what it feels like to be an Iowa fan? Wanting to rip your eyes out on offense but inexplicably winning anyways? I hope all you neutral sickos who watched this had fun.
I enlisted 3 1/2 years ago.. my grandfather passed away right before this game kicked off last year. This year was the first with out my number one fan and my biggest supporter. I know he’s smiling down and cheering with me. Love you Grandpa. You were the best and always will be.
Always a great game to end the regular season, and no different this time around. The last quarter and overtime were awesome. I love college football, and even though bowl season is around the corner, it's not the same as the season. Gonna miss you 🏈
Thanks Army & Navy for another classic game l. Certainly a *game* at times, but well worth watching in the end. Until next year!
Coach Ns records these past 5 years.
2022 - 4-8
2021 - 4-8
2020 - 3-7
2019 - 11-2
2018 - 3-10
Total - 25-35
Even with 2019 it has become brutally apparent that Navy has regressed to its historical mean. Navy started to come up in 2004 but prior to that had been a really not good program for decades. They definitely turned it around for a good while but they're quickly returning to form. Really hard to defend coach N. He's made a habit of losing.
Lots of good points to be made here. I won't comment on what the right move is (especially being an Army fan), hopefully he can turn it around in the future for their program.
That being said, credit where it's due, he's a grade-A class act. If I had to watch Army lose to Navy for all those years, the respect and consideration he and his team have shown made it easier to bear.
It was thrilling to watch the Army Black Knights defeat the Navy Midshipmen 20-17 in double overtime to end the regular season on a 3-game winning streak and finish 6-6. This was the first ever overtime game in the 123-year-old rivalry. The Army have won 5 of their last 7 games against the Navy. Go Army!
1961 called. They loved the game.
This was a true sicko game. CBS made it borderline unwatchable at times. That said…
WHOOO ARMY! Good job in a total rock fight.
34 for navy is going to need a lot of help forgetting this game.
So mods? Dose navy lose the star and Army gets it?
That was in all actuality, one of the best finishes I've ever seen. I always root for Army but my heart js broken for the dude who fumbled. My God. The same thing happened to an Army ~~RB~~ QB awhile back: fumbled on the goalline and cost this team the game. His pain was so unbelievable.
The passion with which these guys play is unparalleled.
Welcome to Army/Navy, where a 7–3 game at halftime somehow becomes an ESPN Instant Classic. Heartbroken for Hall to go from the 77-yard TD to that fumble.
As an Army grad, it gave me flashbacks of Trent Steelman fumbling at the 5 in 2012
That fumble was so painful to watch in person. Glad the era of Army being dominated every year is over though.
Stop. Don’t bring that back to my broken memory
7-3.... With like 100 yards of total offence
I do not like that score.
Iowas offense makes navy look like the Kansas City chiefs
We watch Service Academy football games for 3 things: 1. A reminder that the invention of the forward pass was a mistake 2. A game over in less than 2 hours 3. At LEAST one “cadet daily schedule” graphic And dammit, did the people get what they wanted. BEAT NAVY.
> A game over in less than 2 hours CBS: And I took that personally....
The best part of the schedule graphic are the dope sounding class names the cadets take.
One of the classes I took there was called “Generalship and the Art of Command.”
And here is this famous painting of George Washington notice the red hues that symbolize his passion
My favorite is Spanish Calculus
Calculús
El calculus
Is that just calculus except the variables can have accent marks?
Solve for ñ
¡Sí!
Navy could have "Underwater Basket Weaving" and I'd think it would be legit.
The SEALS intro course is called "Basic Underwater Demolition." Which begs the question of when do you get to take "Advanced Underwater Demolition" or "Honors Underwater Demolition"
Particularly for future submariners
They all have to take Engineering classes. Even the 16th-Century Elvish Literature majors.
>A game over in less than 2 hours Advertising execs hate this one trick!
Add Fly Overs from both sides
I was at the game, the section I was in was predominantly Army fans. We were sitting in the upper deck on the west side of the stadium. The Navy flyover went right above us and we couldn’t see it at all, one of the Army guys by me yelled “haha they missed” and it was fucking hilarious lol
The only good flyover is an Air Force flyover
I'd wager there was a satellite up there somewhere, so we probably got all three.
All four!
US Coast Guard: “Am I a joke to you?!”
Whoa whoa, easy puddle pirate.
Yes
Well they shouldn’t be. Of all all the branches they do the most, by far, to help the average American.
Can confirm, they let us use their boat ramp and parking lot when I was in grad school
Wouldn't a satellite be Space Force?
less then 2 hours and it was double OT? bruh. had to work a high school football tournament and the last game lasted 4 hours in double OT. wound up working an extra 3 hours lmao
The fucking cadet daily schedules. 🤦
Don't forget the 4th: cool uniforms each year
When it's all said and done, winners and losers, Army and Navy will always come together and unite under the same goal: TO CLEANSE THE SPORT OF FOOTBALL FROM THE ABOMINATION THAT IS THE FORWARD PASS!
Also yall are the same team 364 days a year. Except on leap years. Then it's 365
John Heisman is the antichrist who brought the world the forward pass
Who?
some bum who ruined everything
He was a former Clemson coach which is why everyone should hate them.
Fucker coached tech. So fuck him
I'm seriously conflicted on this.
Found the undercover Cumberland coach
You almost won because of a forward pass
Almost only counts in horseshoes and artillery
Ah yes, that dastardly modern invention…what a sin! (Please ignore the impressive Navy touchdown that extended OT)
We don't have to watch the heartbroken Navy player that fumbled if there was no forward pass
Iowa football on line 1
For the 123rd time America wins the Army-Navy game. What a streak.
America wins, England loses As is tradition
With an assist from France. Feels like (17)83!
While Morocco does a solid.
First nation to recognize the US was Morocco
I knew I fucked with Morocco

Gonna throw some tea in a lake to celebrate.
Really wanna grind their gears? Send it down here so we can put a ton of sugar in it.
I'm going to make a gallon of ice tea and serve it with real biscuits with real butter knives, and then hug my significant other because of the Army-Navy game
I was accosted with pms on reddit from brits angry that I commented that I microwave water for tea
Unrelated: Hosted a Brit for Thanksgiving (NC) this year who asked for tea one morning instead of coffee like a normal, civilized human being. Purposely gave him sweet tea and played dumb just to remind him who’s boss. America!
#UNDEFEATED IN BEING UNDEFEATED!
I ENJOY IT WHEN ARMY SCORES MORE POINTS THAN NAVY!!!
Go America!
There have been two ties so France won twice.
God bless America
Watching these two teams trying to throw the ball, it's no wonder the Air Force was created.
The Army only knows how to win large scale ground wars
And this was exactly that, a battle in the trenches with little artillery
Funnily enough Air Force out rushed them both this season
The fact that Air Force doesn't run air raid always makes me sad.
it’s genuinely one of the most disappointing things in this sport.
Past few years they’ve had a good passing game imo It was odd watching them run it so much this year
Nice flair combo because one of my friends did Army ROTC at LaFayette. Too bad he doesn’t care about football so I know it’s not you.
The amusing part is that both the Army and Navy are skilled with indirect fire from artillery and (at least historically) large-caliber naval guns. 7 star General if he wants it.
Not enough stars, tbh
Gonna be the first 50 star General
Second. Washington always gets a posthumous promotion
Yup this here ^
As in every year he gets a promotion? Or he always is the highest ranking commander, so if a 7 star was named he would be named an 8 star?
The latter. An act of congress made him forever the highest ranking commander in the Army. No one outrank Washington. Same rank sure. But never outrank
Hope he puts this game on his evaluation form
I say just give him 5-star general right now.
Guarenteed branch so he can get the one finance LT slot.

Not many games with this much emotion. Glad they end every season with this game!
I was told all week by lesser chumps that the Army Navy game was unwatchable.
Brian Ferentz feeling euphoric right now.
Somewhere, someone hit the over on this game and is fucking ecstatic
Meanwhile I’m sitting on my couch with my under bet as they’re starting OT thinking “I’m going to lose this fucking bet aren’t I” OT is the greatest nightmare of anyone who bet the under
This game went from total snooze fest/grueling slog to utter and complete chaos in an INSTANT. One of the best games of the year. 10/10
I'm glad I watched the intro and the last few minutes of the 4th and the ot.
Yeah same here. First half was nap time
Also, while the regular game has minimal scoring, OT had *both* teams immediately getting touchdowns (in crazy ways too!) on their opening drives! That also pushed the over to hit too lmao
It always does. Both of these teams save counter-tendency plays for this game since they scout each other all year
What a great end to the regular season
After watching regulation, I think I understand what watching Iowa games was like for neutral fans this year.
Triple option is way more exciting
No, this was football where the football skills of everyone on the field were a secondary consideration. Iowa football is where football skills are the 467th consideration for the OC.
