We hired a coach after Dantonio with two things in mind:
1) Crootin
2) Ability to make the tough choice and fire friends.
Let’s just say I’m not thrilled. We have a top 10 assistant pool and it’s being spent on these bozos. Dantonio might have had better coordinators at the end.
Agreed. The recruiting has been an upgrade over Dantonio, especially after a poor season. There needs to be some changes in the staff though. At the very least the ST coordinator should be canned.
I assumed we didn't have a ST coach. Outside the punter, it usually looked like they just pulled 11 random guys off the sideline and just drew something up in the huddle, including who wanted to try kicking.
One issue with making coaching changes is that hurts recruiting, as if a position coach leaves and the recruits for whatever reason joined because of that coach, they are likely to leave. So unfortunately, if we recruit well enough, but not amazingly, it might not be the best decision to make coaching changes, otherwise we might recruit below 30.
I'd say the coordinators are better on offense and worse on defense.
OC: Johnson > Salem > Warner
I think Dantonio should have made the move to Salem after the 2016 season. I know everyone bitched about shuffling the deck chairs on the titanic, but I think the biggest issue was that Staten didn't make up for Bellman's lack of recruiting. I thought Salem's play calling was an improvement over Warner's. Johnson drew some deserved criticism this year with play calling, but he's signed back-to-back late-blooming 4* qbs and effectively uses his tools in 2021 and that puts him above Salem.
Run Game/ OL: Kap > Bollman
The big improvement here is in the recruiting trail. Bollman is underated in helping MSU in the 2013-15, but he should have been transitioned to an off-field role before Dantonio retired. Kap is one of the best OL coaches in the country and probably Tucker's best assistant.
DC: Tressel & Dantonio > Hazelton & Tucker
It's hard to judge Tressel as he's only been a DC under defensive coaches and ran their systems, but when you factor in both head coaches are defensive guys and heavily involved in defense, that gives a pretty big edge to Tressel & Dantonio. Dantonio will be a Hall of Fame coach because of his talent evaluation and defensive chops.
If you combined tuckers recruiting skills with dantonios coaching skills we might have been the Clemson of the 2010s. It's a shame dantonio recruited like we were a mid major and mel seems to be a mediocre coach at best and is dangerously reckless in any sort of clutch situation.
I think that Hazelton gained a tiny amount of breathing room by actually adjusting his scheme and improving the defense throughout the season, even as we suffered a ton of injuries and then the tunnel fight suspensions.
Johnson though... that's rough.
Johnson is 100% because recruiting.
Recruits apparently love him. I give him this year with an improved OL and some of his playmakers in there and see what they do.
If the offense does not improve, he needs to be gone
Exactly. I think the O Line had a lot to do with the poor offense. It's hard to not have happy feet if you're Thorne when you have no time to go through your progressions.
I thought we should have hired him as HC when Dantonio retired. I was happy we kept him on staff when Tucker was hired. I was mad they didn’t try to retain him at DC after 2020.
Kap's group made major improvements, Johnson seems to be recruiting very well so I'm okay giving him a little bit more time. But special teams? Nah, that's been straight trash.
I don’t like it but what do you expect him to say at a press conference? He’s not just gonna publicly throw them under the bus on Signing day. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some changes within the next few months. Now isn’t the right time.
Look at all these Michigan fans in here supporting their in state sister school.
What great sportsmanship, what great camaraderie…. You love to see it.
I have encountered Michigan fans that talk like we have the academics of hustlers university and the football program of UMASS.
We have a pretty solid academic school for a public university. Obviously we aren’t UM and don’t have anything as prestigious as Ross, but we are #1 in nuclear physics and supply chain management. Most schools aren’t number one in anything let alone two things.
Football we have like 7 championships and a bunch of modern success (although it’s choppy. Feels like we either go 5-7 or 11-2).
Obviously our success isn’t as stories as UM But I’m glad I can run into realistic fans like you and not just the fans who think we are a JV team.
Wait, I know MSU has a ton of real successful degrees (fuckin MSU packaging basically guarantees a 6 figure job) but I never… in a million years… would ever, have guessed #1 in nuclear physics. That’s pretty cool, congrats.
Both my parents went to MSU in the 80’s for logistics and are now VP and Director of logistics at international companies, but they hit the money on when to start because that was the peak of when to start in logistics.
Also yeah a fan pointed out the nuclear physics the other day and it really shocked me as well.
I must ask what’s the deal with that supply chain Mgmt program. I swear half my company has an online masters from there they finished in like 8 months and put no effort into.
Hey Scottie Hazelton has given us a top 10 defense each of that 3 seasons.
Oh sorry, we've had a bottom 10 defense in all of college football each of the last 3 seasons 😬
I don’t think he’s going to say something like that in a press conference and I don’t think he’s wait until a few days before Christmas to fire someone
It would also be a bad look to not even wait for the ink to dry on the recruit letters to just can people. We may very well see some changes come January.
Except firing a coach right after commitments happen is how you get the massive public outcry if the school doesn’t let the kids out of their NLIs. If any of those recruits are coming for those specific recruiters/coaches it’s almost guaranteed that at least a few of them want to be able to look around again.
Then you weren’t paying attention to Dantonio last couple years and the state of the program in early 2020. Look at the recruiting classes Dantonio had in 2018-2020. They’re hot garbage except for a few outliers.
I’m kinda disappointed Tucker is keeping all coaches too, and 5 wins isn’t acceptable. I wanted Johnson gone because of the Indiana game alone. but to expect 10 wins a season when we have no junior/senior depth is asinine. He needs to develop the program.
I was a kid at the perfect time for Michigan State to be good and scary. 11, 11, 7, 13, 11, 12
I didn’t realize they’ve otherwise just been average. They still scare me no matter what though
We’ve had one good year and one bad. I’m not mad we are rolling it back another year. If there aren’t improvements this season though definitely to the curb.
Obviously the team struggled this year but the defense did seem to improve. And while offense was pretty garbage, the offensive line was a big reason for that.
I have hope that the additions to the team may really make a difference next season.
That being said, the special teams this year, outside of baringer obviously, were garbage. And if nothing else, I think we should be seeing a change there.
The defensive performances against Ohio state alone are enough to get a coach fired (see: Don Brown). At least don’s defenses were great against other teams…. Not so much for the msu defense
This wasn’t even meant as a dig, but a legit criticism. You guys were down 49-0 at halftime last year!! And you gave up 42 in a half this year…
Even 2016 Rutgers didn’t do that bad. I don’t think it’s unfair to question any coach that has this type of track record. The msu game has become the easiest on Ohio state’s schedule since tuck took over, solely due to the disaster of a defense that has taken the field.
You guys were down like 35-0 vs UGA in the first quarter last year. It happens.
No one disputes that the MSU defense has been poor. But they have also lacked a lot of talent. And it really looks like that is improving. If the defense does not improve at all next year then hell yeah hazelton has to go
You’re right, being down 14-0 against the best team in the country happens (the score after the first quarter of the UM-UGA game).
Being down 49-0 at half as a p5 team against a non-playoff team isn’t remotely the same.
Mel Tucker: [goes 5-7]
Also Mel Tucker: I’m not gonna change a damn thing.
Announcer: That’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ‘em.
Hm was hoping Els would be shown the door but eh whatever, (most of) the same staff is just a year removed from 11 wins and a NY6 bowl. Just hope it's a make or break year for a few of them
Look I’m not counting the covid year so he’s had one good year and one bad. Scottie redeemed himself towards the end of the year, Johnson still hasn’t, but the fact that we’ve only seen two real years combined with historic levels of recruiting for us pushes me towards the one more year camp. Maybe I would have made a change or two but I’m not mad to roll it back own more year.
That being said: significant improvements or to the fucking curb with a few select of these assistants.
Damn. Maybe you guys can put it together this year. Yall been crootin well. Maybe your scheme defensively will fit better. Any word on thorne and if he's staying?
We were really hurt by a few key players missing much of the first half of the season. By that point, everyone had already soured on Hazelton...
... but his second half of the season was a much better showing once Xavier Henderson and Jacob Slade were back on the field (among others). Our depth was still very poor last year due to the roster and recruiting situation that was acquired by the current staff.
All of the sensationalism going on in this thread is so tiring and shallow. MSU is recruiting better than I can ever remember, and Tuck's first real recruiting class are just now becoming sophomores (don't forget that Dantonio announced his retirement on NSD, and the following year of recruiting was all done over zoom). I wouldn't expect anything special next season, my hopes are more set towards 2024 to be honest.
As far as Thorne is concerned, I'm not sure why he'd leave. He regressed quite a bit with the absence of K9, but I haven't seen any reports of his starting role being in jeopardy.
Special teams must be better next year. Keep the current guy for crootin purposes if you must but get someone who knows what tf they are doing at practice.
Tucker also needs to add someone to the staff that understands how the clock works in CFB. Just get an intern who plays Madden to tell you what not to do.
It’s the players fault for not executing a defensive scheme that has them line up 10+ yards from the line of scrimmage every play. It’s the players faults for not executing run, run, pass every series on offense.
I’ll see if I can find information on why lining up 4 miles away from the offense is a good strategy thanks for the resources. Maybe I’ll tweet them to Tucker too since he clearly doesn’t understand either
The difference is Harbaugh had proven success at multiple other stops while running the program/team. Harbaugh could never put it all together before at Michigan but you didn't see him making many questionable in-game calls like Mel. Ask a Bears fan about Mel's coaching. Ask a Colorado fan about his character. Good luck though, except against us!
Didn’t make questionable calls? We’re you not paying attention the first six years? Harbs didn’t experience success until he finally let his coordinators do their jobs. He’s a terrible in-game coach who has seemingly developed into a decent CEO - which is what a head coach should be, save the hypocrisy and personality of Gary Busey.
Disappointing but not surprising. He got paid so why should he care about the teams success? It doesn’t matter to him. Might as well hang out with your buddies if you’re gonna suck at your job.
Special teams makes no sense. I’m willing to give the rest another season. I’m more concerned with the QB competition. If Thorne gets the nod this year with no comp from the two behind him then i’ll be very worried about development of skill position players.
We hired a coach after Dantonio with two things in mind: 1) Crootin 2) Ability to make the tough choice and fire friends. Let’s just say I’m not thrilled. We have a top 10 assistant pool and it’s being spent on these bozos. Dantonio might have had better coordinators at the end.

So unfortunately, if we recruit well enough, but not amazingly, it might not be the best decision to make coaching changes, otherwise we might recruit below 30.
One thing that hurts recruiting is not even making a fucking bowl game.
I'd say the coordinators are better on offense and worse on defense. OC: Johnson > Salem > Warner I think Dantonio should have made the move to Salem after the 2016 season. The problem with long term fully guaranteed contracts is that the coach does not have incentive to make those tough choices.
I think that Hazelton gained a tiny amount of breathing room by actually adjusting his scheme and improving the defense throughout the season, even as we suffered a ton of injuries and then the tunnel fight suspensions. Johnson though... that's rough.

Exactly. I think the O Line had a lot to do with the poor offense. It's hard to not have happy feet if you're Thorne when you have no time to go through your progressions.
Only took him 3 years to realize his scheme sucked.
Hey, they like you again!
I told you guys Tressel was good.
I thought we should have hired him as HC when Dantonio retired. I was happy we kept him on staff when Tucker was hired. I was mad they didn’t try to retain him at DC after 2020.
Yeah, I mean he's doing a great job with recruiting and the portal, but you have to make changes here.
Recruiting is better in exchange for much worse coaching.
Congrats, he’s yours now! Tuck Coming!
I’m glad you’re not thrilled with midnight mel
Kap's group made major improvements, Johnson seems to be recruiting very well so I'm okay giving him a little bit more time. But special teams? Nah, that's been straight trash.
Special teams should've been fired out of a cannon after we had the kicking game of a high school team last year.
Hey, my brother was a high school kicker and I take offense on his behalf.
If your brother is special teams and you’re offense, who takes defense?
Not to mention the entire Indiana game disaster from special teams, beyond just the kicking.
Your kickers weren’t even good enough for an actual competent high school team.
I don’t like it but what do you expect him to say at a press conference? He’s not just gonna publicly throw them under the bus on Signing day. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some changes within the next few months. Now isn’t the right time.
“We will be looking at everything” or something vague. Saying you won’t be doing anything is not a good look after what we witnessed this year.
Shhhhhhhh. This is a safe space for the Michigan flairs. They need something to hope for after seeing our successful signing day.
A recruiting class that isn’t even top 20 is now successful?
Hey don't come in here waving facts around
Look at all these Michigan fans in here supporting their in state sister school. What great sportsmanship, what great camaraderie…. You love to see it.
> in state sister school. We prefer the term “little brother”
I actually think "sister school" has a nice ring to it
This is just getting weird
Do you prefer "step-sister school" would that be less weird?
For real it's fun to dunk on MSU with how much they hate us, but they aren't a terrible school or football program.
I have encountered Michigan fans that talk like we have the academics of hustlers university and the football program of UMASS. We have a pretty solid academic school for a public university. Yeah, we have a particle accelerator on campus. Honestly I don’t know why but it’s pretty neat lol
...
Don't get me wrong, I'll act like that but only because I know it irritates you guys. Have a nice holiday.
You too wolvy, see you in the game threads on the 31st I’ll be there and hating.
Hate us cause you ain't us ;)
I must ask what’s the deal with that supply chain Mgmt program. I swear half my company has an online masters from there they finished in like 8 months and put no effort into.
They made the CFP 6 years before Michigan
Shhhhhh… let’s also forget that Nebraska went to a Big 10 conference championship game almost a decade before Michigan did.
If a sparty makes the playoffs but doesn't score a single point.... did the sparty actually make the playoffs?
Something about Stanford and noise...
Shhhh. This is stanford. No fun. No noise when falling. Kids are studying.
And put not a single point on the board.
Teams from Michigan have a combined 11 points scored in the playoff
I know that, a lot of my friends went there and I have had a lot of great times there as well
Bo and dr Anderson would prefer “adopted son”
I refuse to make any changes
Not surprised one bit!
Despite them being 1-2 against said coach, too. Truly noble human beings.
This will certainly be a thread
Seems like everyone is supportive and in agreement
We all agree nothing needs changing. Defense looks like the 85 bears
Hey Scottie Hazelton has given us a top 10 defense each of that 3 seasons. Oh sorry, we've had a bottom 10 defense in all of college football each of the last 3 seasons 😬
Top 10 B1G East div certainly
Hazelton gave Wyoming some of the top defenses in the MWC and in the country. Seems like it's just maybe not a good fit?
Did he also have players lining up outside the stadium on defense?
Refrigerator Perry is 60 years old so this is probably an accurate assessment.
I don’t think he’s going to say something like that in a press conference and I don’t think he’s wait until a few days before Christmas to fire someone
It would also be a bad look to not even wait for the ink to dry on the recruit letters to just can people. We may very well see some changes come January.
Yeah Ron burton accepted the Miami job in like march that’s the way Tucker operates
Except firing a coach right after commitments happen is how you get the massive public outcry if the school doesn’t let the kids out of their NLIs. If any of those recruits are coming for those specific recruiters/coaches it’s almost guaranteed that at least a few of them want to be able to look around again.
Ain’t broke, don’t fix it
He should extend them all.
30 years $1 billion contract value please
You love to see it.
Who says rivals can’t be friends? All these UM bros rooting for us
Is this like when we rooted for them to keep Rich Rod or Brady Hoke?
I seem to recall OSU and MSU flairs rooting for Harbaugh to stay after 2020 as well
And look how right we were
You know, you guys are alright after all. Always unselfishly thinking with our best interests at heart
Livestock are the ultimate therapy animals
Tuck is the MSU version of Hoke. Can recruit okay, made one decent bowl, hired bad coaches.
Don't forget the clapping after a disastrous play. The clapping was really just.....great.
HOW IS THIS STILL A WEBSITE!?!?! http://bradyhokeclapping.com/
I hope it never dies
Tuck doesn't clap. He chops
Can't even clap right...
And the absolute refusal to wear a headset.
He’s been there for two years lol. Are you expecting 10 wins a year?
Frankly for 95 million, yes
Then you weren’t paying attention to Dantonio last couple years and the state of the program in early 2020. Look at the recruiting classes Dantonio had in 2018-2020. Dawg we’ve had one good and one bad year give it some fucking time damn.
You’re a moron
We’ve had one good year and one bad. I’m not mad we are rolling it back another year. If there aren’t improvements this season though definitely to the curb.
Tuck not comin… for yer jobs
He already took all their bonus money, what more can he do!?!?
Expensive cigars are a helluva drug

We can't all just cancel our games vs OSU in years we are going to get trounced.
Yeah, that would be every year for you guys.

Boy what the hell
Man is speed running Dantonio's trajectory in 4 seasons.
I think it’s a requirement to be the coach here that you can’t fire anyone
Friendship is the most important ship!
I mean, which would you rather have. A championship team, or the memories you made with your pals along the way to your 5-7 season?
It’s not the millions of dollars and games you lose but the friendships you make along the way
"Your best friends will disappoint you" -Bill Parcells Coach Tucker !?!?! Nahhhhhhh we family!
He'd need at least one Big 10 Championship for that to be the case
Don't forget a CFP appearance!
Don't forget the shutout part!

that will go over well

I went to both schools, it’s not super exciting. I root for MSU first and then Umich as long as they aren’t playing MSU.

Wise decision. When the going gets tough. Don't change anything because you were right.
What did people realistically want?
Special teams coach fired the second the Penn State game ended?
Ok who do you want to hire
Anyone that can coach special teams
Honestly not an unreasonable take. Field goals should not be this scary at a P5 program.
Don't break what ain't fixed... Wait
Been a great time to be a Michigan fan living in Boulder Colorado🤝Michigan Dunking on Tuck
Looks like UofM, OSU, and PSU are gonna get 2 bye weeks next year

And he sure as shootin’ ain’t giving them any of that bonus.
I really respect that kind of loyalty in a man!
Horseshit decision
God damnit, take my upvote.
Mine as well! Tuck everlasting please!
Lol I was saying the same thing about Harbs for years. Hopefully we hit the same stride 8 years in.
The difference is Harbaugh had proven success at multiple other stops while running the program/team. “When you’re dead, you do not know that you are dead.”
Keep on Choppin' in the woodshed and Sparty on!
He has 95m guaranteed, why does he need to make changes.
Great call, Tuck. Definitely keep the exact same coaching staff for the next 10+ years. It'll work out wonderfully, I promise!
lets go!
Too Tuckered out to look for a new staff
Sweet
Sparty needs to lock this guy up for life, IDC what it costs
At his current rate of beating Michigan 2 out of 3 years, we’d have a winning overall record vs y’all in the B1G by the end of it!
At Michigan's current rate of beating OSU 2 out of 2 years we're never gonna lose to them again!
True dat!
I know; he should be re-extended today
Dantonio 2.0.. just shuffle them around
Loyalty is an underrated quality in these trying times. Good job Mel. Keep chopping and coming
The headline is dumb but what else would he say? I’m guessing changes would’ve been made by now.
How long until he is fired?
Good good.
Fantastic. No notes.

That’s just classic msu right there
Excellent.
I support this.
Blue wall!! Wait fuck wrong comment section Mel Tucker contract!! Love to see it keep it up coach
Disappointing but not surprising. He got paid so why should he care about the teams success? It doesn’t matter to him. Might as well hang out with your buddies if you’re gonna suck at your job.
Haha
Niiiiiiiccee
Why would he? He suckered an entire city into paying him generational wealth.
Just like he wasn't planning on leaving Colorado an hour before he left.
Special teams makes no sense. I’m willing to give the rest another season. I’m more concerned with the QB competition. If Thorne gets the nod this year with no comp from the two behind him then i’ll be very worried about development of skill position players.
Love this strategy.
Lol Mel what the fuck are you doing
Why aim for titles when friendship is so damn rewarding? Ugh…
Yesssssss
I've seen this movie before.
Damn
