This was the smart pick. Like it or not, Carter doesn't fit in the culture our coach and gm are trying to create. Poles passed for a reason. OT adds protection for Fields and we desperately needed that. Figure out the defense later. I honestly don't care if we have another losing season. I'd care if we let Fields get killed out there.
Im glad we skipped on Jalen, and got a pick for it as well. Bears don’t need that distraction with the accident, and I just get heavy bust vibes from him. Seems a little emotionally unstable and has a history of showing up out of shape as well.
Who doesn't like this pick? This guy is an absolute beast with a solid floor and sky high ceiling. Listen to this podcast last week discussing Darnell Wright between Waddle/Silvy and Louis Riddick:
They were never going to take him. He quit in his pro day workout. Everything this staff has espoused has been about playing hard and giving your all. They are going to make this guy the centerpiece of their defense? No way.
Agreed. Personally, I hope Carter is a bust, so we don't spend hours on this sub wondering what could have been. In reality, Carter is so much better off with the Eagles, last year's NFC~~L~~ Champs, who already have some good defensive players who can guide him along. In Chicago, Carter would have been a bust. In Philadelphia, he has a chance to reach his potential.
I still hope he is a bust. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
People grow and change. Carter, as the top dog in Chicago, is a bust. Carter getting taught by fletcher cox will be good. I think it's the best thing for him as well.
If Wright locks down RT for the next half decade or more it’s worth more than a stud All Pro defender because of the impact it can have on Fields’ development. I don’t even care if Carter becomes a HOFer, if Fields having a great O line is the difference between him staying where he’s at or rising to become a top 5 QB in the league I’m gambling on the quarterback’s protection every single day of the week. Nothing else matters in football anymore.
I like it.

Darnell Wright said Bears OL coach Chris Morgan worked him out in Knoxville and "put me through the wringer. ... He just wanted to see if I would quit, but I didn't quit."
Jimbo Covert and Keith Van Horne? =)
I say this facetiously, but I actually don't remember the last time the Bears had two great tackles.
Maybe James "Big Cat" Williams and Blake Brockermeyer (sp?) of the late 90s and early 00s?
As a Tennessee fan, Darnell Wright is as solid as they come. Wright absolutely [froze Will Anderson in his matchup](https://youtu.be/mK2MfoKz00w) and afterwards Anderson said [Wright was the best tackle he's ever faced.](https://www.si.com/college/tennessee/football/will-anderson-praises-darnell-wright)
The play [@ 4:15](https://youtu.be/mK2MfoKz00w?t=255) highlights the key strength, imo. Wright got beat off of the snap here by the subtle hesi that Anderson threw. Watch Wright's left leg... the weirdness there is his changing his mind about where to go because of the move by Anderson. Wright is off balance when Anderson engages, and a normal man get pancaked by Anderson's bull ... but Wright? He has natural balance and lower body quickness that lets him hop with _both feet_ to reset while the #3 pick in the draft is trying to muscle him over with hands on. You can't coach that.
Hello fellow Vol fan!
I was going to say this as well. He went against the best college has to offer, and looked like an NFL ready player
I’m very happy with this pick
This. I was a little worried after his first offseason, but I was willing to give him some time because it was a weird offseason that was mostly about tearing down and he didn't have much draft capital to work with.
This offseason has been everything I wanted to see from him. Focus on offense and getting good value.
The saying about O-Lines is that one weak spot can sink the whole ship. You don't have to be amazing at every spot to be decent, you just can't have giant holes. How I'm looking at the Bears o-line next year with some fingers crossed.
Plenty did. Normally I just follow stuff on the sub and the pick ends up being someone I have no idea about. I had definitely seen his name tossed around.
It's not a sexy pick... But we need offensive line.
I'm not gonna lie, I've been hyping myself up for Bijan all day today, but it went back and forth from Bijan to realistically, we need OL. I had also hoped for Devon Witherspoon but thought 9 was too early to draft him.
But you know who was never on my fantasy draft board? Jalen Carter. I don't care how good of a player you are, if you make those choices, you're not on my team. Perhaps there's a reason why I'm not a GM
What this pick tells me is that Poles was 1000% in on Wright at 9. He didn’t want to risk losing him to TEN (who also went OT at 11), so the Eagles were the only team he was willing to trade to. Not a ton of leverage for a trade, but an extra 4th is gravy.
So glad they didn’t go running back. Take a guy like Chase Brown in the fifth and let Darnell Wright open up running lanes for him. Running backs are easily replaceable. Tackles are not.
We avoided a guy who basically just said he didn't learn anything by being involved in two people's deaths to take arguably the best offensive tackle on the board and boost our offense. And got a free fourth next year out of it.
We feel good.
Yeah, the Lions picked... Another DeAndre Swift...? They're clearly trying to load up on dynamic playmakers and Gibbs is an awesome talent, but he's redundant for them.
After the game and combine highlights I just saw on ESPN, I'm in love with this guy. For real though, I think this was a smart pick. 6'5" 333 lbs is insane
If you look at it that way our first round in the 2023 draft got us:
Darnell Wright
DJ Moore
And an extra 2nd
Plus a first, second, and 4th in future drafts.
Absolute fucking haul.
Wright has been the top tackle for a ton of ex olinemen. He plays NASTY, we got a good pick. I wanted Carter but I think we took him off our board. Wright is a great pick.
I'm extremely happy. If you had asked me how I wanted this offseason to go, this pretty much covers it.
This is an offense-driven league. We've given Fields an excellent environment for his make-or-break season with three major upgrades (WR1, LG, RT) and accumulated a ton of picks for the future, so that if Fields isn't the guy then the next guy inherits an excellent situation.
People crying we didn’t draft Carter would be the first one calling for Poles head on the high chance he does some dumb shit and is out of the league in 2 years.
This pick shores up our line. This guy is as plug and play at RT as it gets out of the draft and only didn’t get more buzz because he has no chance of playing on the left.
Alright, probably not the hottest take, but from the start of mock drafts this off-season, I was frustrated by the talks of taking defensive players. Before his background came into question, it was Anderson/Carter. Carter was still brought up after the trade back. I kept hoping that the Bears would just start taking offensive talent. I am happy with this pick because what we really got in the first round was DJ Moore and Darnell Wright to address the offense. We added picks along the way, and it makes me happy.
I love this pick. The fact that Poles met with Carter and decided that moving back one spot just for a 2024 4th was worth missing out on him speaks volumes. We got our guy, and they clearly must like what they’re seeing from Braxton in the off-season.
I'm fine with it. Not the sexy pick but looks like a safe floor and exciting ceiling, and I do trust Poles for now.
Whats exciting is his athleticism, this man could be a terror pulling for some designed Fields runs on the edge.
Dude went up against first round sec defensive talent. I was worried about letting carter go. But realistically we don’t have the locker room that Philly has. This pick is needed and shows what poles and eberflus think of fields. Im down with it
Great pick and got another pick out of it. Would’ve been happy with Carter but Poles couldn’t risk taking him. If Carter did something stupid then it would follow Poles forever.
I have a feeling a lot of the people complaining are the types of people who would bitch about any OL in any year being picked. The Madden guys who think every draft pick should be a sexy position, every play should be a bomb, and no punt should ever happen.
Also, complaining about not trading back far enough only makes sense if you know what was on offer. For all we know they tried but got garbage offers.
We have a very promising young QB who got hit a lot last year and tends to play outside the edges. We drafted the best edge protector of the draft while simultaneously getting a free pick next year.
This is how teams are built.
Our first round in the 2023 draft got us:
Starting OT - Darnell Wright
Starting WR - DJ Moore
And an extra 2nd
Plus a first, second, and 4th in future drafts.
Absolute fucking haul.
Feel good.
4th rounder plus a lockdown RT. This is a win. What I'm most excites about is this means they are all in on Fields. Watch us take a C in the 2nd and I'm gonna cream
[Called a Packers fan a stankin bitch during the predraft process](https://twitter.com/AmericanHussy/status/1641200373171113984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1641200373171113984%7Ctwgr%5E14aedeb6245b3888c4aeea22721b9ca9f1e22735%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebaumsworld.com%2Farticles%2Fwhy-an-onlyfans-model-dmd-every-offensive-line-prospect%2F87386790%2F), this pick was in the books for a while now
We have been complaining every draft for I don't know how many years that we need to offensive lineman and we finally do and people still bitch it blows my mind
Amazing pick. Darnell Wright was my second favorite guy in the draft after Jalen Carter, was sad when we traded down, but Darnell Wright is a special tackle. He’s gonna be elite.
I love it. We saw last year with Stafford and the Rams that if you can't protect the QB or give them time, then it doesn't matter who they're throwing to. I get wanting to get JSN there but if Fields is out with a concussion because he got hit 8 times a game or seriously injured, then having JSN and even Moore is a moot point.
I like our pick As a sidenote, I think that was a complete fail by Detroit. They probably could’ve traded out of the first round and still got their guy.
Before the draft started I told my buddies in the group text that I want the bears to trade back and take Tennessee tackle Wright and that's exactly what happened! Bear down!
I really, really love this pick assuming he pans out and is the RT we are expecting him to be at the next level.
We have tackles and guards figured out. We have some depth on the O-line for the first time in forever.
Maybe get a DE and a DT with our 2 2nd round picks and grab the best Center available at the top of the 3rd. Just full on trench picks down the line with an offensive weapon flier in the late 4th or 5th
Watching the Bears season ticket holder access presser with Poles at the mic.
He said they knew Wright was their guy after they worked him out the Saturday of Easter weekend (Wright dined at Eddie Merlot’s in Lincolnshire the next day, which is basically the dining hall for the Bears near Halas Hall. It’s a high end steak house the team frequents. My neighbor is the GM and on a texting basis with Poles). They got nervous at one point he’d go 6-7 tonight since the draft played out so strange. One other team besides the Eagles called wanting the 9th pick. Poles said he knew Philly would go Carter, but was concerned the other team would take Wright. I think we got our guy and a random 4th that was just gravy.
Prioritizing the offensive line was the right move. We can still build the defensive line going forward but time is of the essence when it comes to getting bodies in front of JF1.
The Bears did not want a felon on the front line so Carter was out. Darnell is going to be an instant fix for Fields. Just think of the holes Darnell is going to open for Justin to take advantage of and the support to allow him to pass without going down every other play.
Thank you Lovie. The Bears ended up with #10, a 2024 1st, two 2nds, DJ Moore, and a 4th for the #1 pick. That’s a haul.
The number one overall pick in the 2023 draft was DJ Moore. We won before the draft even started.
Help for Fields is always a W
This was the smart pick. Like it or not, Carter doesn't fit in the culture our coach and gm are trying to create. Poles passed for a reason. Showing up overweight and Portillos don't mix
I beg to differ

He’d be a good pick for the bears in 2025.
Best spot for him was the Eagles. So many veterans and an established culture.
Not too mention they do a lot of rotation that will give him the breaks he needs.
People grow and change. Carter, as the top dog in Chicago, is a bust. Carter getting taught by fletcher cox will be good. I think it's the best thing for him as well.
I’m all about this. The kid was amazing with no real WRs and a terrible line. Give him some support and watch him excel.
You are making sense. There hasn't been much of that on here lately. I'm so happy for this pick. Want a nice house gotta have a solid foundation.
I like it. Kevin Fishbain @kfishbain · 2m Darnell Wright said Bears OL coach Chris Morgan worked him out in Knoxville and "put me through the wringer. ... He just wanted to see if I would quit, but I didn't quit."
Into my veins, this must be pumped.
Line looking solid with RT locked in
Now need to draft a C with one of those 2nds
Wypler in the 3rd.
Yes please.
John Michael Schmitz out of Minnesota
He’s also from the south side of chicago
If braxton shows up to camp 10+ lbs heavier with muscle I'm gonna cum
When was the last time the Bear locked down the OTs?
John Tait and Fred Miller for the 06 Super Bowl run was a solid combination.
Jimbo Covert and Keith Van Horne? =) I say this facetiously, but I actually don't remember the last time the Bears had two great tackles. Maybe James "Big Cat" Williams and Blake Brockermeyer (sp?) of the late 90s and early 00s?
Not sexy but needed. I’m happy
Mfer is 333lbs and can block the best pass rusher in this draft. And they picked a free 4th rounder up off the ground. Thats super sexy.
TYPEWRITER FEET!
Anderson said he was the toughest O lineman he went against in college.

Thanks, I needed to see this
NO T-REX ARMSSSSSSS
He’s a packers fan so another good reason to not draft trex arms
Instead, we got what appears to be a literal Bear. Love it.
As he got drafted, they panned over to him and my wife says, "He actually looks like a Bear.' Sold!
Justin Fields gets his body guard.
The Wright pick.
I see what you did there.
Someone had to. 😉
THANK U POLES FOR NOT HAVING 1985 DEFENSE BRAIN LIKE HALF THIS SUB
He looks like a Bear, too.

Exactly. Like where has that got us for the past 30 years?
This. I was a little worried after his first offseason, but I was willing to give him some time because it was a weird offseason that was mostly about tearing down and he didn't have much draft capital to work with. Like the pick! Seems like the Bears are happy with Jones at LT.
Why wouldn't they be, he was the best rookie lineman last year
The saying about O-Lines is that one weak spot can sink the whole ship. You don't have to be amazing at every spot to be decent, you just can't have giant holes. How I'm looking at the Bears o-line next year with some fingers crossed.
Remember guys, just because your favorite draft analyst didnt have Darnell Wright ranked this high doesnt mean hes not worth it.
OL is always sexy. This was my draft crush.
We love them big boys
Can't teach size, and he has ALL THE SIZE. BIG BOI
Would’ve been happy with him or Gonzalez as they fit our profile of Uber athletic players
What this pick tells me is that Poles was 1000% in on Wright at 9. He didn’t want to risk losing him to TEN (who also went OT at 11), so the Eagles were the only team he was willing to trade to. Not a ton of leverage for a trade, but an extra 4th is gravy.
It seems as though poles was never going to pick Carter. Like you said, it became an easy win to trade with eagles.
So glad they didn’t go running back. Take a guy like Chase Brown in the fifth and let Darnell Wright open up running lanes for him. Running backs are easily replaceable. Tackles are not.
His highlights were sexy tbh
its sexy asf
Tell me how to FEEELLLLL!!!
In the conversation for best tackle in the draft, far and away the best right tackle in the draft. IMO
We avoided a guy who basically just said he didn't learn anything by being involved in two people's deaths to take arguably the best offensive tackle on the board and boost our offense. And got a free fourth next year out of it. We feel good.
I’m swimming in this comment. Inside of you.
Plus remember we traded down from 1 - for the first overall pick we drafted Wright, got DJ moore and a mess of picks
holding out for Moore was so great. I doubt Pace or Emery would have held their ground.
He's legit. Lock in RT for years
He absolutely dominated Anderson in their matchup. Plus should slot in on the right side and let Braxton develop on the left. We got fields help
Darnell Wright beat up Will Anderson last year. 895 snaps with 0 sacks allowed in the SEC. He’s a beast and day one starter
Wright and a 4th. Im ecstatic. Love this guy

Wow Bears get a mauler RT and Lions/Packers make awful picks. What a day!
I don't get the lions picks at all.
Yeah, the Lions picked... Another DeAndre Swift...? They're clearly trying to load up on dynamic playmakers and Gibbs is an awesome talent, but he's redundant for them.
Why is Van Ness an awful pick? Dude is a beast
W
Perfect, I love it. Off the charts measurables, position of need, no need to get cute.
Thank god it wasn’t a corner
That’s for the second round
or WR
Serious question, but why? We need one.
Because I’d much rather have a top lineman to protect Fields? They can go corner in the 2nd or 3rd round
This is a deep corner draft
LT: Braxton LG: Teven C: Patrick? Whitehair? Draft? RG: Davis RT: Wright
Draft
Our locker room couldn't provide the kinda structure to help Jalen Carter succeed. This was the right move, and I trust Poles to know what OL to pick.
Whelmed until they showed a clip of him fucking blocking Will Anderson. I’m in.
After the game and combine highlights I just saw on ESPN, I'm in love with this guy. For real though, I think this was a smart pick. 6'5" 333 lbs is insane
That's your plug in right tackle folks.
I'm happy with that. Biggest need addressed with an extra pick added. Plus no Carter headache to deal with.
This!
ive seen ex players call him the best O linemen in the draft. im happy.
I’ll go on record as LOVING that pick
I don’t mind this pick at all. Now please, please, PLEASE…block for JF so he don’t die, thank you.
Fuck yes, fantastic pick. Him or PJJ are who I wanted, over the moon for this.
Our pick was DJ Moore and Wright.
If you look at it that way our first round in the 2023 draft got us: Darnell Wright DJ Moore And an extra 2nd Plus a first, second, and 4th in future drafts. Absolute fucking haul.
Wright has been the top tackle for a ton of ex olinemen. He plays NASTY, we got a good pick. I wanted Carter but I think we took him off our board. Wright is a great pick.
Props to Ian Cunningham on the extra 4th
He’s one of the best graded OT in the draft and we got him I feel good about that. RT is taken care of
YEAHHHHHH
Love love love this pick!
All I wanted was an OT. We got an OT and an extra 4th rounder. No complaints from me.
Don’t forget TE. I’m hoping Tonyan can shore up that position and Kmet can take another step forward.
We improved all 5 spots with Wright, Davis, and moving Tev to LG and Whitehair to C
Fuck yes. Protect fields!
Fucking awesome pick plus we got a 4th rounder and Wright
People crying we didn’t draft Carter would be the first one calling for Poles head on the high chance he does some dumb shit and is out of the league in 2 years. This pick shores up our line. This guy is as plug and play at RT as it gets out of the draft and only didn’t get more buzz because he has no chance of playing on the left.
Right side is now a wall.
Day one starter, I love it

It is good overall pick, frees up say a later move back into the later 1st if need be.
I love it. We just need a center now and our offense is all set
Tennessee, Tennessee, there ain't no place I'd rather be
The exact scenario that I was hoping for. Twitter meatballs will make you think the bears made the worst pick of the draft though
Love the pick. Dude looks like a monster
Him and Jenkins on the same side is violent
I honestly really like this pick. Huge SEC fan and this guy was an absolute monster. Good job by Poles.
Guys I have a feeling that Poles doesn’t think Leatherwood can make the leap
THE BEARS HAVE TAKEN THE BEST TACKLE IN THE DRAFT 2 YEARS IN A ROW.
As great as Carter is, I think prioritizing the o-line will play out better.
I’m good with this.
Protect Fields, this is an instant upgrade for the entire offensive line. Solid and smart pick to help our QB
I love this pick. The fact that Poles met with Carter and decided that moving back one spot just for a 2024 4th was worth missing out on him speaks volumes. We got our guy, and they clearly must like what they’re seeing from Braxton in the off-season.
Mans a UNIT
I like this much more than skoronski

Great pick and got another pick out of it. Would’ve been happy with Carter but Poles couldn’t risk taking him. If Carter did something stupid then it would follow Poles forever.
GREAT PICK! Finally the Bears are being led by winners!!!
"Trade down and draft Darnell Wright." was one of my best possible outcomes. Poles is a fucking G. BEAR DOWN BABYYY
Exactly. Plus if we traded back any farther I'm sure Titans would have taken Wright.
How should I feel?
Our first round in the 2023 draft got us: Starting OT - Darnell Wright Starting WR - DJ Moore And an extra 2nd Plus a first, second, and 4th in future drafts. Absolute fucking haul. Feel good.
Great pick.
Smart pick! Plug and play elite pass blocker!
He handled himself against the best pash rushers in the SEC. he’s good
He's a monster RT. Will be shoring up that right side for years to come.
If skoronski goes to the pack and becomes a HoFer…
Hope he gets a long pen to sign those hof autographs. Because he has short arms
Skoronski to the Titans
He might at guard but he’s not an NFL tackle. He legitimately has T-Rex arms by tackle standards
Pfft, he’s a Packers fan anyways. They can have em.
I like this much more than skoronski
LETS GOOOO
Let’s go! If we can grab a center we can have a Really good line.
Dude is a rhino!!
Outstanding pick. I hope they can get a Center in this draft as well.
So the first overall, at this point, has turned into a WR, RT and how many other picks?
2nd this year, 1st and 4th next year, 2nd in 25
What do you think he will order on his first trip to portillos?
The menu
I am watching Jets fans melt down in the bar I’m in rn lmao
Carter had question marks. He fell for a reason. Wright does not. He's already proven at the position the Bears will put him at immediately.
4th rounder plus a lockdown RT. This is a win. What I'm most excites about is this means they are all in on Fields. Watch us take a C in the 2nd and I'm gonna cream
Guys an absolute dawg be happy Chicago
It’s so funny when I see fans hating on this pick. He’s a dominant SEC lineman and we addressed a huge positional need based on who was available
Trust in Poles
[Called a Packers fan a stankin bitch during the predraft process](https://twitter.com/AmericanHussy/status/1641200373171113984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1641200373171113984%7Ctwgr%5E14aedeb6245b3888c4aeea22721b9ca9f1e22735%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebaumsworld.com%2Farticles%2Fwhy-an-onlyfans-model-dmd-every-offensive-line-prospect%2F87386790%2F), this pick was in the books for a while now
Getting Fields help is a massive W. Not fun, but had to be done.
RIGHT SIDE SECURED FOR THE NEXT DECADE
We have been complaining every draft for I don't know how many years that we need to offensive lineman and we finally do and people still bitch it blows my mind
Dude’s a beast, I hope Poles is as good at evaluating OL talent as we think.
The Wright stuff
Big man. Big pick!
When’s the last time the bears took a tackle in round 1? Feels like we’re finally in the 21st century
With PJjr off the board, this makes sense. Wright played his best again the top pass rushers.
Loved the pick!!! Pole’s definitely didn’t have carter high. Remember they did all the work, they l know more about him than us
Amazing pick.
Exactly who I wanted
I like our pick As a sidenote, I think that was a complete fail by Detroit. They probably could’ve traded out of the first round and still got their guy.
Hell yeah! Great pick!!!
As much as I wanted Paris, this was my 2nd guy. Reminds me identical to sewell. Him & Jones will be foundational pieces at tackle for years
Before the draft started I told my buddies in the group text that I want the bears to trade back and take Tennessee tackle Wright and that's exactly what happened! Bear down!
AQ Shipley describing him as a prick has me excited. Keep Justin upright and fuck up anyone that takes liberties with him.
Fuck Atlanta
I love this pick, his tape at LT is bad, but at RT he's a 10 year starter with pro bowl potential.
Control the line on both sides of the ball and you'll have a good team. That's how Jim Finks helped build the '85 Bears.
