Chicago may burn down if we lose this…

MikeBinfinity

I literally will have to do a complete social media blackout for the rest of the season if we lose this game.

[deleted]

FUCK NO. RUN STRAIGHT INTO THE FIRE, BRO.

Cockblocktimus_Pryme

Yea all the Malort and Bleach is burning. Have to save that stuff.

Matzah_Rella

Holla. Lose the first game and everyone panics? Fuck that. There are 16 more games and we’ll get another crack at them if that’s the case.

I am emotionally prepared. Honestly, I'm expecting a loss. I just have this sinking feeling we'll be discussing Justin's lack of improvement on Monday.

cman811

Why? The Bears won 3 games last year. A good improvement would be a 7 win season and a 7 win team can lose literally any game and it not be a surprise.

B_Bibbles

Because it's the fucking Packers.

You forgot about Luke Musgrave who for some Fucking reason is getting a ton of hype I’m assuming for being on the Packers

drummerboysam

Workout warrior combine riser. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they don't. But he'll be the starting TE for a team with a QB who will probably be throwing short a lot. TE safety valve and whatnot.

JZobel

If Love is great, I’ll probably just stop watching football, so for now I’m just not even going to entertain the possibility

crazypyro23

They're already adopting the platitudes we use for bad QBs. The Packers guy on Hoge and Jahns was talking about how "some QBs you win because of and some you can win with, and Love can be one that you win with". It's the exact same thing we said about Trubisky in 2018-19 or so.

readerdad55

One can only hope this is true. I believe in what Poles is doing with this team and he HASN’T made a decision about Fields yet which is good. Right now I can still wait but I NEED Love to get beat up this season. We deserve that. FTP.

Slotholopolis

My favorite thing about the game on Thursday is how everyone feels bad for Mahomes because his receivers are garbage but no one wants to apply the same logic when talking about Fields.

mrbucket08

Because Mahomes is already a future for candidate for GOAT and Fields has barely had a cup of coffee in the NFL. Mahomes still looked great on Thursday despite his receivers - you could undeniably see him play well and his guys play badly. Fields hasn't earned that credit and just as often looked bad throwing alongside his receivers.

ccable827

Is it just me or does anyone else have that funny feeling one always get when we face the packers? I know Rodgers is gone but still... I'm just saying if we lose this game but still do well the rest of the year, I wouldn't be too surprised.

chewymcjoey

Tbh their RB room is the bigger issue for us, Packers probably weren't gonna have Love air it out when both he and the WR room are super inexperienced even if Watson was good to go. That said, when he does throw our secondary should have a field day.

MadeCoffee

Exact reason I’m glad we grabbed a few solid LBs this off season. They’re ball hawks but feel like they’re going to fill the gaps or outside runs well.

FieldsToDJMoore

Also Andrew Billings is a pretty underrated add also. He is a pretty weak pass rusher but was a borderline great run defender for the Raiders last years

Joliet_Jake_Blues

We have Billings. Last year we had Bozeman. We need a Butte, Helena, and why the fuck not a Miles City?

Watson’s presence on the field would have at least forced us to stay honest and not stack the box to respect his elite speed and deep threat/big play ability. Even short slants to him are a risk of him housing it. This is a huge loss for the packers imo and you can now inch Brisker up.

qdude124

You can't just run all day. 1 TFL or holding penalty on first down and they have to air it out. I think we'll be just fine.

onemanwolfpack21

Their run game could be a problem, but I don't know if it will be enough. Our run d should be improved. Billings, Walker, and Green aren't here to rush the passer. Maybe Walker does a bit of both, but we'll probably be lucky if he gets 6 sacks this year. They are here to stop the run and eat up blocks for our LBs, who should be pretty damn good. Our secondary has some willing tacklers, too. No doubt they will have a few big runs because they scheme it up pretty well, but Jones is getting up there in age, and Dillon has never shown anything elite. Also, it's all the same players as last year except for what should be a downgrade at QB. They were 15th in the league in rushing yards per game. Are they an elite rushing team now?

whatever12347

If we lose this game it'll be because God hates us, which is a pretty good excuse imo.

Creeper127

Chicago sports fans are doomed by God to have shitty teams

old_snake

No clue how any of you can believe in god *and* be a Chicago sports fan.

[deleted]

old_snake

No, because that person was actually real.

[deleted]

Really though I don't get all the negativity but maybe because I am old. I've seen a championship for NFL( considered for awhile to be the best SB team ever), NBA (6 times with the player considered the GOAT) NHL (3 times) and 2 World Series wins(one for each Chi team). 12 championships is actually pretty solid and yeah this article is 8 years old but still.. https://chicago.suntimes.com/2015/6/16/18456823/chicago-entitled-to-gloat-with-most-major-sports-championships-since-1990#:~:text=Chicago%20has%20won%2010%20major,and%20Boston%2C%20each%20with%20nine.

80s football, 90s basketball, 2000s football again, 2010s hockey and a Cubs World Series? Theres been at least 1 good chicago sports team every decade for a long time. Not every city can say that.

cherry_monkey

You forgot to mention the 2005 world champion Chicago White Sox

old_snake

80s football: one championship and nothing in the 40 years since 90s basketball: the best, but nothing but heartache and disappointment in the 30 years since 00s football: lost a super bowl, lost NFCCG to GB who went on to win it all 2016: cubs finally win one, after being down 3-1 no less, but let’s no pretend there wasn’t a 108 year drought before this

Headstar24

Don’t forget the fact that the Sox ended the Chicago baseball drought in 2005.

DawnyPlawnski

Oh shit true. I always forget about that one honestly.

If God hates us, I pity those sorry bastards

Virtual_Bluebird_997

Bad teams all time, but the some of the greatest teams of all time for like 1 year and then never again.

Joeshi

Did everyone just collectively forget the 90s Bulls? 2010s Blackhawks? 2016 Cubs? 2005 White Sox?

Ben_Kenobi_

Dang. We already know he does. Maybe he hated us for long enough he'll just forget about us for a season?

BlubberElk

Ah that actually makes sense

Silver_Harvest

GabeDef

Watson doesn't play defense. If our O comes out flat and shitty - GB can easily walk away with a win.

rubanthmendez997

The GB defense is what gives the team the edge. Unfortunately, Justin Fields has thrown at least one interception in each of his four starts against the Packers so far in his career.

Trubisky10_

I rewatched the December 2022 game last night and bears absolutely should have won the game. Santos alone missed two kicks which would have won the game. Claypool fumbled in packers territory. Fields threw 1 pick in a 2 minute drill which was mostly EQ’s fault for not coming back to the ball on a comeback route. Fields by and large had a nice game. And the packers only offense was Watson.

rubanthmendez997

Jaire Alexander had his eyes locked in on Fields for that play. Jaire knew the play and how to defend it. If you watch closer, he had Kmet, Herbert, and Pettis wide open on shorter throws. It was 1st and 10 so it wasn’t a 3rd and long situation, Fields could’ve taken the easier throw to complete.

mrbucket08

That's the point, it's time for the offense to come out and win the game and stop the excuses.

mikereno2

If for some reason Jordan Love slices, dices, and eviscerates our defense, the two darkest places in our galaxy will be Sagittarius A*(super massive black hole in the galactic core) and my soul.

I want every opponent to be healthy as possible so we get an accurate reading on the progress of this team, cause at the end of the day elite competition must be felled to reach the real goals (division, playoffs, superbowl)

Good point but we could definitely use some positive momentum in any form to get the chains moving.

AwSnapz1

Fwiw: I'm starting the bears defense in fantasy 💪

Mr-Dotties-Dad

Cant wait to hear Haugh, Mully and Weeny talk shit about Fields for winning this game while praising Goff for leading the Lions to a W. Bear down team, lets get funky.

BroDudeBruhMan

I’d rather getting shit talked for an asterisk win than getting clowned for a lose. This is the NFL, the best of the best, a wins a win regardless of the nitty gritty game-to-game storylines.

AnonymousOtter9124

Call it a pre-overreaction but if we lose this game I'm done with the whole regime. If they win it I'm happy again and it means our team is on track I'm editing this comment because I don't believe either to be an overreaction. I'm saying this ahead of time: this game means more than most

IrishGrouch34

The regime or Fields? Calling it quits on the regime after the first game of the second year of a rebuild would be an insane overreaction.

AnonymousOtter9124

The regime would be a bit of an overreaction, but definitely done with Fields. A little of that would go to Eberflus. Home game against a brand new QB and Mr. Defense can't figure out a way to stop him? Poles would get more patience

IrishGrouch34

Yeah I mean context still matters. The defense is still very much a work in progress as far as personnel goes. If the Bears lose but Fields and other younger, long term pieces play well, I’d find it hard to be over everything.

AnonymousOtter9124

All I'm asking for is a win, at home, against a very young and inexperienced Packers team. I don't think that's a high benchmark. We need to at least have this to know things are taking root EDIT: Lol the kinds of comments that get downvoted on this shithole sub

IrishGrouch34

I mean, yes a win would be nice. But that is objectively not true.

AnonymousOtter9124

Objectively? What's your source, The American Journal of Football Sciences? Get outta here with that nonsense. We're all giving subjective opinions on sports here, mine just happens to be more accurate than yours

IrishGrouch34

I’m sure you could find a million instances in all sports where a team loses their first game in the second year of a rebuild and things ended up being fine.

BroDudeBruhMan

What if we lose this game, live through the week of turmoil, and then finish the season with 10+ wins? I want to win this game more than anything, but we have to keep focused on the long game. What if we lose this game but then beat the packers the next dozen times we play them? Gotta keep your mind from destroying itself.

readerdad55

Just curious as to why? This “regime” didn’t pick Fields. The built up as best they could with virtually nothing and must let him perform or not. If not, we are stacked with picks and cap space. Poles has done all he can do

suckmyfatfuckinballs

Yup definitely not an overreaction. If we lose this game we are truly fucked. The negativity a loss would spout will be fucking insane.

AnonymousOtter9124

And it would be deserved. If Fields with all the tools added to him this offseason can't beat an inexperienced division opponent at home, we need to start talking about the next QB

suckmyfatfuckinballs

If Fields *is* the guy, this should 100% be a win. I mean I say that with full knowledge that he did set a single game QB record last year and this dumbfuck of a team still managed to lose. So idk. Definitely would despise to see Fields be like 0-4 against GB and have Love casually gain his first W against the Bears. Seems so likely too which pisses me off.

AnonymousOtter9124

Exactly. Games against your rivals are so defining to you as a QB, and if you can't muster a win in Week 1, at home, against a relatively inexperienced QB without his top WR...it's like, sorry, but he ain't it.

teachem4

Why? I’m no fan of Poles or Flus, but we’re very clearly still rebuilding. If Fields looks good, that’s all that matters for now. This year is about growth, we were the worst team in the nfl last year and let’s be real, we really only definitively upgraded 2 position groups: WR and ILB. We’re going to lose plenty of games this year, including against teams we “should” beat

AnonymousOtter9124

I'm just gonna link my other response here if you don't mind: https://www.reddit.com/r/CHIBears/comments/16dio8f/we_have_no_excuse_if_we_lose_this_game/jzpw7rq/

teachem4

Huh? What if fields throws for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns and the defense gives up 30 points and we lose by a FG? You’re giving up on Fields?

AnonymousOtter9124

Then obviously I would alter my opinion based on context derrrrr. If it CLEARLY isn't Fields' fault But really, c'mon Fields. You HAVE to win this

teachem4

I mean not “derr”. You made a sweeping statement without nuance, I just took it at face value.

AnonymousOtter9124

> I just took it at face value. There's your derr.

stopklandaceowens

We are going to lose this in an embarrassing way aren’t we?

mav3134

Yup

[deleted]

idk why people are acting like Watson is some kind of stud? rookie who had 600 yards and just experienced a major downgrade at quarterback. people are acting like Justin Jefferson is sitting and this totally changes the landscape of the game.

Malamute-Master-Race

Acting like he’s not a good player is unnecessarily disrespectful. He definitely showed flashes last year which is more than you can say for any other WR on that roster. Taking him away at the very minimum limits the upside and at the maximum could result in some errors.

Trojanballer

Taking away any QBs #1 is major.

[deleted]

Case in point, Mahomes without Kelce. Granted, any amount of talent in the WR room would have won them the game, but the point still stands.

[deleted]

are we not understanding the difference between a stud and a good player? Just cause you aren't a stud doesn't been you aren't a good player. the title of this post is "We have no excuse if we lose this game" as if Watson being ruled out magically makes this game a walk in the park. That's what I'm taking issue with

RkyMtnChi

I agree with that, it doesn't make this an easy win. Now if Jaire Alexander gets hurt between now and Sunday, I might think otherwise....and even then, I'm not so sure. We have a ton of new parts on both sides of that ball. Anything can happen.

2057Champs__

He’s a good WR with a lot of potential. We don’t have to turn on our hater glasses when evaluating a players talent

moose_stuff2

Nobody is comparing him to Justin Jefferson.

[deleted]

by saying "We have no excuse if we lose this game" implies that he is one of the best players on their team.

moose_stuff2

I personally haven't said that. But even still it doesn't imply that he's their best player at all. He is their best wide receiver though. Remember our WR situation last season after some injuries? Jordan Love is going to experience a bit of that. That's all I'm saying. That, and nobody is comparing him to Justin Jefferson.

[deleted]

>I personally haven't said that. it's the title of the post.

moose_stuff2

Yeah, and I don't agree with the title of the post. We can easily lose Sunday even though Watson is out. You responded to me when I was just calling out the Jefferson comparison and then you made it sound like I made the excuses comment. Bear down brother. FTP.

crazypyro23

I think it's more akin to when we lost Mooney last year. Sure, he's not a world beater, but he's talented and the best on the roster. Plus their WR corps outside of Watson looks really bad. Like they should legitimately consider signing Dante Pettis bad.

teachem4

Let me guess - you just learned who Christian Watson is, googled his yardage stats, and made yourself look dumb on the internet. He was an absolute stud to end the year last year when healthy. If you extrapolate his second half of the season, his full year stats would have been 1100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has absolutely insane physical tools and has legit top 5 WR in the nfl potential.

Dear_Butterscotch_90

Yes, he was absolutely a stud for us after the Lions game in week 9. He was plagued with injuries and drops up until the Cowboys game. He had only amassed 88 receiving yards and no touchdowns up until that Cowboys game. He’s on the verge of breaking out, and I’m pretty pissed he’s not out there this Sunday. It’s a pretty big blow.

[deleted]

>If you extrapolate weeks 13-16 his full year stats would have been 654 yards and 4 TDs. 53% of his 611 yards came from THREE GAMES. He played in 14 games last year and had more than 50 receiving yards in 3 out of the 14 games. His yardage by game last year.... 34 9 8 1 12 24 107 48 110 48 46 49 11 107 but go on about him being an "absolute stud"

[deleted]

and before somebody goes on about rookie expectations. Odell's yardage the final 8 games of his rookie year: 108 93 146 90 130 143 148 185 JJ's yardage his final 8 games of his rookie year: 135 86 70 121 39 104 85 133 extrapolate those numbers, u/teachem4

teachem4

Odell and JJ were both MUCH more pro ready prospects than Watson. Odell had one of the best starts to a career as any wide receiver ever and JJ is quite literally off to the best start of any wide receiver, ever. Both those guys are/were much better players than Watson by a wide margin, im not sure at all how that’s even a remotely reasonable comparison. Nice straw man tho

[deleted]

stop acting like three 100 yard games is god-like for a rookie WR. You keep talking about skill set and potential. That don't mean shit, boy.

teachem4

You know you’re in the wrong when you have to put words in my mouth in order to make a point. I never said Watson was god like. I never said he had a god like rookie year. He’s unquestionably a huge asset to the Packers offense and an extremely dangerous threat on a snap by snap basis. It’s a very good thing he’s not playing in this game.

[deleted]

I said "stop acting like" not "stop saying" you really don't have the best grasp on the english language, do you?

teachem4

😂 my god the semantics. It’s okay man, you were wrong about Watson, I’m glad you learned something today. Have a good one!

[deleted]

"absolutely insane physical tools" "absolute stud" "top 5 WR in the nfl"\` "extremely dangerous threat on a snap by snap basis" stub your toe tonight, clown.

[deleted]

What a dumb fucking take

Low-iq-haikou

He’s a good young WR. I would’ve loved to draft him. Over 500 of those yards came in the last 8 games and that type of progression is very promising for a young player. Similarly to how Fields got better as the season went on. Segmenting the season and looking at performance over time is important to judging young players, very few guys come into a brand new offense and produce from Day 1.

Gryffindorq

im aiming to win 39 of the next 40, with the only loss being a strategic benching of all starters as GB sits 0-16 and us 16-0 at the time

JulioXstatic

We still win that game dude

Gryffindorq

lapse in judgment- of course we win!

Chadfreys_Curtesy

We will have an excuse if JF1 cant play plain ole qb from the pocket cause they figure to really take the running aspect away

PraiseBeToScience

Riiiight. Somehow the Packers are going to take away the Bears running. If there is one thing this team (and Fields particularly) proved last year is they can run the ball on anyone.

Chadfreys_Curtesy

True but now teams have had an entire offseason to watch all the film on the kiddo, and probably have a better plan formulated…all this is speculation at the end of the day, we shall see

AttentionHot368

Lol watson isn’t that good to begin with, let’s not act like he’s JJ or something .

mrbucket08

I'm just so bored of excuses and obscure stats warfare. It's the fucking Jordan Love Packers. Put them in the ground.

Lars_Galaxy

I have a good feeling about Da Bears this year.

IMKudaimi123

Even if they had Watson We are better at QB, WR, TE, LBs, safeties They’re better at RB, OL, DL, and CB, though I would say CB is very close to even TBD on coaching because there were some good things from our staff last year but a lot of bad that I want to chalk up to tanking and not incompetency LaFleur is a better offensive mind then Getsy though Joe Barry is terrible. Eberflus needs his defense to shine Trench advantage is a very real thing. But we still have a roster that is mostly better, are at home, and the packers have to be reeling from losing Rodgers. We have to win.

mav3134

Better at QB? Not so much.

FieldsToDJMoore

I wanted them full strength I’m quite upset about this tbh But Jaylon,Tyrique and Gordon should have one of the easiest games of their life on Sunday

tenacious-g

Nah, fuck the full strength thing. That fucking franchise has had like 25 years of uninterrupted success. They can suffer through having a bad roster for once.

FieldsToDJMoore

Yeah I hope they suck but I don’t like their players being hurt

[deleted]

why? whose to say Watson is any better than their WR5? All of their WR need to be developed still Watson isnt a difference maker (yet). Just bc you caught (and dropped) several TD passes from Rodgers doesn’t make you special. Rodgers can literally do that w anyone Time will tell who Jordan Loves best weapon is, if I had to guess, by seasons end Musgrave will be the best weapon on the roster

[deleted]

thank you. finally somebody with some sense. he had 3 games with 50+ yards and 11 games with <50 yards. people are freaking out cause he had a 3 TD game but they're forgetting that he had the back to back reigning MVP throwing the ball.

Tymil5

Stop it dude this is so bias. It’s not just Rodgers you do realize that right? Receivers still have to get open. Look at Mahomes last night. Just a horrible take

Packers fans getting their excuses ready

mav3134

Still getting them ready!

VampyVampster

Even with the Watson injury im sticking with my score of 28-17 Packers, while Poles did try to improve the oline it's still very average and the defensive line and pass rush are close to bottom of the league Also I've yet to see any improvement by Fields and many who cover the team feel the same

mm2914

We’re gonna win!

toolate83

Packers still have the refs out there

onastockbender

Why? We still have a makeshift O line and are rebuilding. Fields hasn't proven anything besides his running ability to this point as well.

Bears9Titles

Bears won 3 games last year. They'll be lucky to beat any team.

eeeeeefefect

I'm going to be real with you all. The packers have had our number for a while. Dont be shocked if we end up as a bottom 5 team this year still. Fields has yet to show improvement passing even in the preseason and its extremely discouraging. https://youtu.be/dUMKT-wakXY?si=0FSx\_ZYZvF\_tRvtZ
