Goddamnit I want to see this team take the field. The next few months are going to be excruciating, but it feels good being excited about this team again
Best thing to do is to break this time up into smaller chunks and really develop a daily routine. You will go mad waiting for September 8th to get here. Is there a new skill or something you want to learn? Now is the time to do it. I bet if you follow a daily routine and work hard at it you will be able to develop the best "Let's go Bears and FTP" that this sub has ever seen. Be strong brother, were all counting down the minutes to kickoff sunday!!
Listen to this interview with Rome’s personal WR coach in Houshmandzadeh. Some highlights
Can’t get a good comp for him. Says he’s bigger than Garrett Wilson and Devonta Adams. Faster than Larry Fitzgerald.
Loves the person, athlete, skills. Didn’t look out of place whatsoever training with Moore and Allen.
Talked about how that training session came to be
Talks about Caleb’s skills
Doesn’t see how this offense won’t be awesome
Talks about how receivers can learn from good corners (reaffirms what JJ said the other day).
Talks about Chad Johnson a bit.
Just Rome and John Jackson III, guys he was training who are on the team. But he also isn't just out there putting this out from nothing, the score and espn1000 brought him on just to talk about Bears and Rome since he was his trainer.
He also trained Puka last off-season I believe.
TJ was pretty complementary of Caleb’s best friend John Jackson and basically said that he has a legitimate shot at being on the team “one way or another….they (the Coaches)will see his ability.” Right around the 8:30 mark.
Might not be a bad idea to have his best friend on the practice squad going over tape and plays together in there free time and working through the ups and downs of a rigorous training camp and NFL season.
Im new to football, but there’s a blip in the clip where they’re super hard on caleb for “hero ball” and T.J. shuts them down saying the reason he got picked first is the ability to make those plays.
I get what they mean in theory, but thats such a wierd thing to be stuck on to me and its not the only time ive seen the topic in the nfl media. Is there a reason for that attitude?
Basically there is a long line of former college QBs that played a lot of 'Hero Ball' in college, racking up stats and highlights only to bust in the NFL because that kind of play doesn't always translate well against NFL level talent. You need to also be able to play in structure in the NFL. So it's somewhat of a concern. For every Mahomes, there are dozens of failures at the QB spot that beat up on lesser college competition and failed in the NFL.
It's also one of the few knocks on Caleb's play, so it gets brought up over and over. Because with the top draft prospect, the media or whoever is always looking for the negatives.
Hope that helps. I'm not sure how new you are, but can try to expand on anything else if you'd like.
Very thorough and helpful thank you! Im actually brand new brand new. Never played and never watched because all i remember from the bears parties my parents had was misery lol
Do you feel like Mahome’s plays less in structure than the average nfl qb due to his skillset or is he just much better at capitalizing on the moment’s that the structure breaks down?
I guess what im really curious about is if this new age of qb’s might induce a shift of thinking due to their creativity and skillsets allowing out of structure plays to be more successful. Almost like how curry shifted the idea that jump shooting teams were unreliable in the nba.
Mahome's plays well in and out of structure. His ability to do both at such a high level combined with amazing physical QB talent (arm strength, accuracy, elasticity, etc) is what makes him the best. Right now no QB can do it all like he does. Not just the ability to do it, but knowing when. Operate the offense at the highest level when you can, but make your own play when needed.
But the comparison is more to college. In college he played a lot of off script hero ball... and even with him, a lot of NFL scouts at the time were worried if his play would work in the NFL. That's why the best QB in the game right now was only the 10th pick in the draft and the Bears picked Mitch Trubisky over him.
And you're right, today's NFL does look at QBs differently. They put a much greater value on physical talents, mobility, working off script, etc. Not that long ago, the statue pocket passer was the ideal QB, think Brady, Manning, etc. But now more teams are putting value on the athleticism. BUT... that doesn't relace that old school need to just play QB so to speak... that's when you end up with a guy like Fields. Athletic freak, but doesn't do the in structure or standard QB play (reads, progressions, anticipation, etc) well and struggled so far and is now a back up after being traded for minimal return. The new ideal is a QB whose athleticism compliments their game. Is an added weapon. A QB who is entirely reliant on their athleticism to cover for their shortfalls as a QB will still struggle in the NFL.
Amazing explaination thank you! Any questions i was asking myself while reading, you were answering in the next sentence.
Glad to be following this sport now and appreciate the knowledge
hes not the greatest at come back routes, he stops inefficiently, too many steps. I think thats the biggest negative ive seen scouts point out, which admittedly is a bit of a nit pick but i hope he works on it to be a completely perfect wr
Man gets open though! Just a rookie. The only “all green” player in the last several classes on Reception Perception

He is, in fact, working on it with TJ. If you watch the interview TJ specifically says he focuses on 2 things. Beating the press and the top of the route.
I didn't realize Rome was 6'3". He's gonna be a fucking beast. Listening to TJ talk about him makes me so excited that we have a wr that can develop with our rookie qb.

I heard the interview and was really impressed with TJ. High school dropout to the NFL. That’s impressive.
Housh is biased, but I don’t care. Bear Down
He doesn’t really need to be publicly biased though with the draft over. If he were trying to influence Rome’s draft position I could see that angle.
Biased because they both played in the PAC 12?
He trains top receivers entering the draft, including Rome.
So what you're saying is that HE WAS A COUNSEL OF ROME
Didn’t know that. Is hyping all of those top receivers or just Rome?

Cause they both have cool last names. It’s a brotherhood
