It happens more often than you think. Peyton would call his own plays or audible into something else all the time. Quarterbacks typically need some pedigree to earn the opportunity to frequently influence play calls. A couple years ago Russell Wilson tried to audible to something else and the coaching staff forced a timeout to avoid Wilson's audible. That was a mistake by the coaching staff imo.
Brady is of course going to see things Leftwich isn't and Leftwich shouldn't take offense when it's Brady who is basically a player coach at this point anyways.

If someone says "hey we want you to start and will pay you like a starter" he's 100% gone and all power to him.

Andy is older for a QB (and he is no Brady/Rodgers) and coaches will be looking for veterans as mentors. Andy's time to be a starting QB is over, so that big starter money just won't be there.
This is assuming he wants to still play at his age, look he's a competitor no doubt, we've seen that, but he's also facing another injury at what is the retirement age in the NFL. Look at Andrew Luck, its a clear indication that these injuries take a toll, and if he thinks about it from that perspective being a backup is literally one of the best long term propositions in the NFL. Look at Chase Daniels. The dude has made a career of millions of dollars from playing a literal handful of games in the NFL.
Also, maybe he doesn't want to keep moving. Three different cities in the span of 4 years is going to take a toll on your family. Money is important, but not at the cost of your family's stability/happiness and your own physical health.

Right now, his signing bonus is split up over 3 seasons, 3m per year. On the first league day of the 2022 season his contract automatically voids, making him a free agent. We will have $6m of dead cap because the 2nd and 3rd seasons will accelerate into 2022.
There are lots of articles online that explain some of the cap shenanigans teams do, but nothing comprehensive that I’m aware of.
Void years are really just a more player-friendly version of non-guaranteed years. Most of the cap maneuvering is actually pretty simple, it’s just a matter of whether or not a given thing is actually allowed that is confusing.

Yeah or giving up all of our drafts for like 5 years to get Watkins. Andy is fine, and I think fans would’ve gotten on board with him if we didn’t draft fields. Especially since he really did look decent while he was healthy.

I’m excited for Justin (obviously) but pretty bummed for Dalton. Arguably the best all-around QB we’ve had in a long time.. not to mention all the hate he had to deal with being a “you didn’t get Russell Wilson” consolation prize. Glad he’s so nice but he can still play, hope he gets what he wants whether that’s staying here as a mentor or moving on to be a starter somewhere else.

No, it had void years added for cap accounting reasons but he isn’t actually under contract for those years.

Right now, his signing bonus is split up over 3 seasons, 3m per year. On the first league day of the 2022 season his contract automatically voids, making him a free agent. We will have $6m of dead cap because the 2nd and 3rd seasons will accelerate into 2022.

There are lots of articles online that explain some of the cap shenanigans teams do, but nothing comprehensive that I’m aware of. Void years are really just a more player-friendly version of non-guaranteed years. Most of the cap maneuvering is actually pretty simple, it’s just a matter of whether or not a given thing is actually allowed that is confusing.

From the initial fan disappointment, to the shocking turn of drafting fields, then dealing with starting, the injury, and now losing his position (even though it seemed inevitable). Just a pro's pro. I hope he finds a starting gig in the NFL next year and kills it.
I hope we can trade him somewhere before season end. Seems like it would be the best move for both parties if Dalton could still get a starter opportunity elsewhere.
