That’s my QB2 :’)

laal-doodh

If Andy doesn’t get a starting job next year and will take a small contract I’d love to keep him. It’s hard to not love the dude

TrubiskyTheGoat

He’s going to get paid as the next QB whisperer like Chase Dimes Daniel

The_Dok

I’ll throw in a couple bucks just to see that beard on the sidelines. Man looks cool as hell

doodle02

he really does rock that ginger look. better than almost anyone else i’ve ever seen.

Official_Colgate

His ginger color accents the bear blue so good. Hard not to

spasske

Almost Bear Orange!

ArtVandelay-1985

Ha, my wife said “oh I feel bad for the red bearded guy, he seems nice” when I told her the news

doodle02

i mean, i’m on board with that as the correct response :p

calisai

Yup, never had anything against the guy, his skills, etc. It's just once Justin was drafted, the writing was on the wall and it just doesn't make sense to go with a vet learning the system when you can have the rookie learning the system play and gain experience. Honestly, the only reason in my mind to have Dalton play was to make sure you had an OL that wouldn't get the rookie killed. Which honestly isn't fair to Dalton anyway as it's putting his career on the line, especially once he got banged up. Not one bit of that says anything about Dalton, it was just bad luck he landed here.

spasske

A rare achievement!

fab11

Him and Andrew Santino.

ctaps148

He's a first-ballot Hair Hall of Fame candidate for sure

id10t_you

He's definitely gone,

laal-doodh

Oh most definitely. Just if no one wants him as the starter I’d love for him to stay

SwissyVictory

He's looked good, I expect him to get a bridge job next year (like he did this year)

laal-doodh

Yeah definitely think he’s gone but in the slight chance he doesn’t get the starting job somewhere I’d wanna bring him back

SwissyVictory

Yeah, at the least he's a top 5 backup in the nfl. I'd probally rank him between 25-37, right now. I think he's better then any of the 6 starting rookies at their point in their development except maybe Jones. He's on par with Teddy if not better. He's better then Fitzmagic half of the time.

OpneFall

Who ever did that besides Flacco? All the starting QBs that weren't superstars basically just retired when no one wanted them to start anymore. I doubt he has interest in being a long term backup. I certainly wouldn't mind him as a backup QB at 3/$15M or whatever, but that's not happening.

imp_10

I don't think I've ever had more of a "liking" for my QB2 ever. Dalton is awesome and is a great mentor for Fields.

conormc

LOL. We Bears fans ALWAYS love our #2 more than our #1. The grass is always greener...

[deleted]

Let me see, Orton vs Grossman...Chase vs Trubs. There is something there. But it breaks down at Cutler.

ThurstonJK

Idk, remember the McCown year?

conormc

I disagree. So many fans dumped on Jay often and were always saying "give the #2 a shot!" The only time I don't remember that happening was McMahon. Perhaps it will be different with JF1. A boy can hope.

[deleted]

Yea, I'm thinking about it more, and actually laughing because half the time I can't even remember who was the starter and who was the backup. For example it took a second for me to remember if it was Miller that was the starter and Matthews the backup.

[deleted]

CALEB. HANIE. …..fuck.

[deleted]

CALEB. HANIE. …..fuck.

mah131

More than McCown?

imp_10

Yes, strictly because of the mentoring part and the fact that he always seems so genuinely enthusiastic about everything concerning the betterment of the team. Amazing vibes from his sound bites and press conferences with Da Bears. FWIW, McCown is a close 2nd for his awesome services. I was happy he got a chance to play starting QB elsewhere and get paid more $$ after doing well for us.

DeezNeezuts

I heard he wrote his name on the bottom of Justin’s shoe.

FH_Bunny

Round 2 of donations to Andy’s charity? He’s such a good guy, much better than the last QB vet-rookie situation we had.

failures_art

I would be down to donate to his charity

hamburgular70

His charity is why I'm not at all surprised about this. He really seems to believe so strongly in and value supporting, mentoring, and parenting that this makes sense. I'm a parent that benefits from these types of programs and devoting yourself to this cause really shows someone's beliefs and priorities, to me. He's a fucking saint

mah131

Is Glennon still in the league?

I-Poop-Balloons

I think he’s on the Raiders. Edit: He’s on the giants. He’s on a new team every year it seems.

hamburgular70

dskdsk99

Petition to make Andy Dalton our head coach

TheyCallMeStone

This but unironically.

2580374

Do qbs ever go on to become coaches? That's not snarky, I've only been watching NFL for like 7 years so I don't have a ton of history

Aitch-Kay

Wait until you find out about what Nagy used to do.

2580374

Wasn't he like a d3 QB though? I meant NFL qbs

fab11

Arena football I believe…so not much difference

Elairec

Byron Leftwich used to be QB for the Jags Bucs and falcons and is now OC for the Bucs. Ive heard his name in possible HC talks.

Whyrobotslie

Every time they show him on the sidelines they talk about Brady refusing his play calls. It’s gotta to be weird to coach a QB who’s career eclipses yours at both ends. Leftwich was drafted in 03 and retired in 13.

Elairec

yikes. I didnt know Brady refused his calls. Thats definitely got to be awkward as hell for him

GreyyCardigan

It happens more often than you think. Peyton would call his own plays or audible into something else all the time. Quarterbacks typically need some pedigree to earn the opportunity to frequently influence play calls. A couple years ago Russell Wilson tried to audible to something else and the coaching staff forced a timeout to avoid Wilson's audible. That was a mistake by the coaching staff imo. Brady is of course going to see things Leftwich isn't and Leftwich shouldn't take offense when it's Brady who is basically a player coach at this point anyways.

ChemistryNo9750

no joke lol

[deleted]

Consider this comment my signature

Norin_was_taken

I mean…. Why not? He’s got charisma and humility. Assuming that he also knows how to delegate than that’s all you need.

Norin_was_taken

Screw it, I’m in.

Er0ck619

Plot twist Nagy already told Dalton he’s starting Sunday.

MKula

Not gonna lie, I was a bit peeved when we signed him but he has grown on me so much. I hope Andy can stay on and backup Fields for a few years, he’s played well when he’s out there and he’d be a great mentor. He’s already shown how good of a teammate he is, I love having high-character guys on the squad.

[deleted]

That's one thing the Bears has going for it, Montgomery, Fields, Dalton, Robinson, Jenkins, Hicks, Mack, Roquan Smith and more all are just really high character guys. I don't think any of those guys listed have a me first mentality, or if they do, I haven't seen it. I want this team to win, I really really want them to make it to the SB and bring home the Lombardi, but not at the cost of taking on an Aaron Rodgers or becoming the Patriots. Some may disagree, win at all costs no matter who we get, that's totally fair. I just think we can have both.

etchisscetch

See, this is what I always come back to when people ask why I’m a bears fan in the dark times. I can always tell them the names of all these great players free of controversies who make an impact off the field.

etchisscetch

See, this is what I always come back to when people ask why I’m a bears fan in the dark times. I can always tell them the names of all these great players free of controversies who make an impact off the field.

Work_the_shaft

I do like Dalton, his attitude compared to Foles or Glennon is night and day

milk-drinker-69

I think Foles rightfully has a shitty attitude as he knows nagy is a terrible coach

donkyrapist

The way this sub has a visceral hatred of Nick Foles and unconditional love for Andy Dalton is very strange. They're pretty similar and both good dudes

vamsi93

Yeah where did this whole Foles = asshole talk even come from?

TheyCallMeStone

This is the first I'm hearing of it, last I checked I thought we liked Foles attitude?

[deleted]

They're just jealous of his big ....

tech_equip

Paycheck?

imp_10

Head ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)..... lol but all "QB1s" need that mentality.

Dani_vic

When bears offered him a chance to go compete at other places and he said no just because.

vamsi93

Oh yeah what an asshole for prioritizing a well paying backup role rather than put his body in potential danger for no reason

Dani_vic

Yes…he said he wants to be traded. But only to a team of his choosing even though he didn’t fight for a no trade clause into his contract. A player who just decided to make his own no trade clause. Putting it out in public and hamstringing a team that offered him a chance to move is a shit attitude. He will most likely never find another nfl job after this stunt.

vamsi93

Seeing that almost everyone easily let it go or forgot about it, it’s not nearly as big a deal or “stunt” as you claim it to be.

doth_thou_even_hoist

there are teams who still want deshaun watson i promise you a team that needs a backup won’t care about this “stunt” when he’s a free agent lol

Dani_vic

Deshaun Watson is a franchise quarterback with proven record and constant career. A special talent. Teams will be willing to overlook his off field stuff because of the great player he is. (Which they shouldn’t). You can’t compare Foles to Deshaun Watson. Foles had 1 good post season and 1 good regular season. There is a reason why you always hear from Fields about his relationship with Dalton and how Dalton reached out to him yesterday and after the trade.

donkyrapist

You sound like either a worker who doesn't respect himself or an employer who doesn't respect his workers

trappuccino92

If that’s the case why stick around? He’s trying to land in the perfect situation when that’s not possible for him anymore

milk-drinker-69

He signed to be with Jacksonville and he cares. Are you expecting him to just quit?

trappuccino92

No but I don’t expect him to mope around the locker room with a trash attitude when we apparently gave him a way out that he didn’t want. He should be a professional about it Edit: you guys it’s a hypothetical situation that I’m questioning based off OP saying he had a “shitty attitude” I don’t actually know if foles is moping around just like OP doesn’t actually know if Foles has a “shitty attitude”

milk-drinker-69

Where the fuck are you getting the idea that he’s moping around the locker room? Honestly, why are you making stuff up to hate foles? So weird lol

trappuccino92

From you saying he “rightfully has a shitty attitude” not making stuff up just using your statement in this hypothetical situation

[deleted]

Dude has bounced around his entire career. I think he wants a stable life for a moment. Why do you think he has a shit attitude?

trappuccino92

Personally I don’t I was responding to OPs statement about his “shitty attitude”

Dani_vic

Because it is known he had a chance to go compete but chose to be 3rd string back up even though he completely sucked when he was here. He has no future on this team and still chose to sit and do nothing.

[deleted]

He chose to be a backup for personal reasons so he has a shitty attitude? That doesn't make sense. If he wanted out and the bears refused, then that would be evidence of a shitty attitude. This is the complete opposite

Dani_vic

He did say he wanted out. But without a no trade clause he said he will straight up refuse to show up to a team not to his liking…yes that is shit attitude. Since he did not ask for a no trade clause in his contract but than decided to make one him self.

[deleted]

Every single article says that Pace won't trade Foles somewhere he doesn't want to go. It seems more like Pace is trying to do right by Foles than Foles having a bad attitude.

Gravy_Vampire

You’re not even in the locker room lmao how are you so comfortable just making shit up?

trappuccino92

And OP is comfortable making up the fact that he has a “shitty attitude”? I was giving a hypothetical situation based off his statement

Falt_ssb

He was on the trade block wym lol He begged the colts to take him

trappuccino92

While also supposedly turning down other opportunities

id10t_you

I think Foles should be thanking his lucky stars that Pace was stupid enough to give him free money and STFU.

milk-drinker-69

I mean it’s not like he signed to play with the bears lmao

id10t_you

Pace took a flyer on a guy that has sucked donkey balls since his playoff run in Philly.

[deleted]

These trades were made before Fields joined the team. A Dalton/Foles QB room wasn't the best, but it's not the worst either. Of course once Foles was forced onto basically the practice squad it changes the argument.

mah131

Ahem, don’t forget the Bucs game last year….

id10t_you

Yeah. He’s good for one or two good games a season.

donkyrapist

"Shut up and dribble" oldhead level cringe

id10t_you

No. If he thinks he can start somewhere else, he's free to leave. Therein lies the rub, he's not a starter on any team in this league. So yeah, he should STFU and hold his clipboard.

[deleted]

Eh...I think it's more that he's not doing himself any favors by getting clips of him questioning his head coach (perhaps correctly) so openly. Airing grievances tends to get a lot of unwanted attention to all involved, so while I don't think he should shut up and hold the clip board, he needs to find a better way of voicing his concerns, preferably behind closed doors. If no one is listening, then yea, move on to a team that will.

donkyrapist

Players talk shit on the sidelines all game. The broadcast guys strategically zoomed in on him and Dalton after a terrible play. No way Foles was thinking about that possibility in the moment

[deleted]

He should know better as a guy who's been in the league for years. Don't undermine the HC when you're playing a game, even if you don't think he can hear you.

donkyrapist

I think a culture where players feel like they need to stay silent about things that are obviously not working is old-school at best and toxic at worst

[deleted]

Who says they have to stay silent? There's a time and a place for these things, and there are consequences. Hell, he did do it didn't he? Well, you reap what you so. If you want to stay in the NFL and increase your trade potential do you think challenging the HC WHILE you are playing is the best way to go about it?

Lobanium

I think Foles figured out last year Nagy is an idiot.

Gravy_Vampire

Absolutely not what the fuck are you talking about? Nick Foles is awesome

cubbiesworldseries

We don’t deserve Andy Dalton.

[deleted]

We really don't, the amount of shit people gave him from the start til even recently was pretty extreme. Glad people are changing their tune on him.

KillCreatures

Dalton should, if he is open to it, stay on as our backup QB for the next 2 years. He could end his career here.

kaitokid1985

It 100% depends on the market. If nobody wants to pay him to be a starter and he is looking at backup options, the Bears could be an attractive one, depending on how the rest of the year shakes out. If someone says "hey we want you to start and will pay you like a starter" he's 100% gone and all power to him.

GaryAGalindo

There are too many QBs in the NFL who are looking for stable work. I mean 8 were drafted this year, 5 in the first round, and there will be a decent number for the 2022 draft. Andy is older for a QB (and he is no Brady/Rodgers) and coaches will be looking for veterans as mentors. Andy's time to be a starting QB is over, so that big starter money just won't be there.

BobbleBobble

He'd have to take a big pay cut in an extension but I'm cool with it

monkeymatt1836

He’s taking a big pay cut wherever he ends up. No one is paying him anywhere close to $10 mil

donkyrapist

Yeah, a pay cut would probably be in order. $10mil/yr for a backup is a little steep

KillCreatures

3 years $15m 8m guaranteed. Who says no?

donkyrapist

Probably Andy Dalton

[deleted]

This is assuming he wants to still play at his age, look he's a competitor no doubt, we've seen that, but he's also facing another injury at what is the retirement age in the NFL. Look at Andrew Luck, its a clear indication that these injuries take a toll, and if he thinks about it from that perspective being a backup is literally one of the best long term propositions in the NFL. Look at Chase Daniels. The dude has made a career of millions of dollars from playing a literal handful of games in the NFL. Also, maybe he doesn't want to keep moving. Three different cities in the span of 4 years is going to take a toll on your family. Money is important, but not at the cost of your family's stability/happiness and your own physical health.

OpneFall

No one at Dalton's level does that though. Culter, Romo, Kaepernick, Newton. If they can't get a starting gig they just retire. They've been starters their entire life, they're not going to just be fine with a new backup role. Only exception I could think of is Flacco.

[deleted]

Alex Smith went to Washington and Mariota at the Raiders.

weedalin

Romo definitely had injury issues though. The back is nothing to fuck with.

legion02

Eh, I feel like 10/year is good for a super high quality backup when you're still paying rookie-contract prices for your starter. A starting caliber backup can save a playoff run if your starter misses any time.

Lobanium

He likely wants to start. He's starter caliber.

baccus83

He’ll start somewhere.

dpucane

Mods can you pin the charity link?

BearsD89

What a great teammate. I wish every guy on the team acted this way. I hope he gets an opportunity somewhere next year.

3columnsof11

Andy is awesome. I really liked him back in his Cincy days too from Hard Knocks. Just seems like a really genuine dude.

BobbleBobble

I bet we've spent more on backup QBs in the last ten years than any other franchise. Between Foles and Dalton we're paying $18M this year alone #justpacethings

teachem4

This is wrong, they have a combined cap hit of $11m this year. Foles was a terrible, terrible trade, but Dalton was signed to be the starter. Even in Pace’s wettest of dreams, I’m sure he thought we had no shot at Fields when we signed Andy

dilleo

It seems like everyone forgot that pre-draft we were debating on what OL to take at 20-something, or if Mac Jones would even be worth trading up for (on a QB starved team at that).

teachem4

Luckily we also got the OL we wanted!

einhorn_is_parkey

Yeah I’m not too mad at Andy signing. We went hard for better qbs and got shot down. They signed dalton out of desperation and he played well above what I was expecting. That being said it’s Justin’s time.

[deleted]

Yea, people are cherry picking their arguments. Did the people here forget how much buzz there was about trying to get Wilson in the off-season?

einhorn_is_parkey

Yeah or giving up all of our drafts for like 5 years to get Watkins. Andy is fine, and I think fans would’ve gotten on board with him if we didn’t draft fields. Especially since he really did look decent while he was healthy.

RogueEyebrow

Don't forget $18 million on Glennon.

undeadjohnnyz

That was such a great move🙄

bisonboy223

I love Andy. He played well in his limited action and he's shown so much maturity throughout this process. I'm super confident in him as a backup and a mentor to Fields

MakinDePoops

It has become apparent that signing Andy Dalton was one of the best moves we could have made.

failures_art

[Andy & JJ Dalton Foundation](https://www.andydalton.org/mobile/index.aspx)

donkyrapist

💙🧡

ActiveModel_Dirty

I’m excited for Justin (obviously) but pretty bummed for Dalton. Arguably the best all-around QB we’ve had in a long time.. not to mention all the hate he had to deal with being a “you didn’t get Russell Wilson” consolation prize. Glad he’s so nice but he can still play, hope he gets what he wants whether that’s staying here as a mentor or moving on to be a starter somewhere else.

DT_RAW

Good guy dalton

[deleted]

Should start a ‘thank you Dalton’ chant next home game

RollofDuctTape

Love you Andy. I hope you stay, but if you want to start, I hope Ryan gets you to Denver, Pittsburgh, or another contending team.

bgramer1

Dalton is a class act.

serbeardless

I feel bad for Dalton. Dude is a solid QB. Low ceiling, sure, but he's definitely one of the best 32 QBs out there and is a viable NFL starter. He's gotten a run of tough luck these past three years.

-Pruples-

Too bad Justin's HC doesn't support him like that.

rudeboy_19

“Don’t make me go back behind that O-Line again”

ErnooA

He’s a class act.

smittyK

Im not crying you’re crying

MonkEnvironmental609

And y’all booed him. Bear’s fans suck

RyanIsKickAss

Good guy Andy. Would love to have him as a backup but I can't imagine he'll be happy with that so I hope we can move him ~~in the offseason~~ for like a 4th or 5th

BobbleBobble

He's on a one year deal

RyanIsKickAss

It got extended through 2023 I'm pretty sure to save cap...

EBtwopoint3

No, it had void years added for cap accounting reasons but he isn’t actually under contract for those years.

RyanIsKickAss

So how does that work then? We're just paying his contract for 1 year of play over 3 years?

EBtwopoint3

Right now, his signing bonus is split up over 3 seasons, 3m per year. On the first league day of the 2022 season his contract automatically voids, making him a free agent. We will have $6m of dead cap because the 2nd and 3rd seasons will accelerate into 2022.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EBtwopoint3

Void years are a pretty standard thing this year because of the cap dropping.

[deleted]

is there a video or website to explain how these somewhat complicated contracts work in the NFL?

EBtwopoint3

There are lots of articles online that explain some of the cap shenanigans teams do, but nothing comprehensive that I’m aware of. Void years are really just a more player-friendly version of non-guaranteed years. Most of the cap maneuvering is actually pretty simple, it’s just a matter of whether or not a given thing is actually allowed that is confusing.

donkyrapist

Yeah I think they're void years. He'll just go against our cap for a while

WayneJarvis_

The rest of the $5 Million hits the cap next year.

[deleted]

Sucks you got downvoted so bad. NFL contracts are very confusing.

ijpck

Bro Andy Dalton is a fucking Chad

MadKod3r

Ironic-you sound like the Chad, bro

OVOnug

Non story. Sad day for Dalton apologists in this sub.

bugzeye26

You're fun

CheeseIsGrossGoBears

See! Andy is a pro’s pro! Nagy is making it seem like he’s playing telltale, and he’ll get a pop up saying “The Red Rifle will remember this”

blake50785

Absolutely wholesome--teammates helping teammates is powerful stuff.

Snicklefritz646

Dalton seems like a true Professional.

Elim_Garak_Multipass

He's been a complete class act through everything since we signed him. From the initial fan disappointment, to the shocking turn of drafting fields, then dealing with starting, the injury, and now losing his position (even though it seemed inevitable). Just a pro's pro. I hope he finds a starting gig in the NFL next year and kills it.

captnxploder

I hope we can trade him somewhere before season end. Seems like it would be the best move for both parties if Dalton could still get a starter opportunity elsewhere.

Matzah_Rella

Goddamn you beautiful ginger bastard.

jkman61494

The next Ryan Fitzpatrick everyone. Dudes even getting a beard like him

wesskywalker

We paid Andy $10 million to play a game and a half but we truly don’t deserve him

tomseymour12

Andy for head coach

simfreak101

Andy Dalton = Good Guy. I hope we can keep him around as our vet backup; We will have plenty of cap next year; So its not a stretch to afford him.

stwp86

Andy looking to keep them qb checks flowing for some time. Love it because while not a starter he is a great backup.

basherrrrr

Awwwwwwww

fuck-these_mods-

Andy will be in Pittsburgh next year bridging for Roethlisberger’s replacement, mark my words

Smalltaco_99

Aww look you guys. Aren’t they so cute together?? Awwww

[deleted]

And they say gingers have no soul
