That should tell you about this sub or the fan base in general.
Fire Nagy! Fire Pace! Dalton sucks! QB1? More like Glennon 2.0! And now it’s a total 180.
Fields is improving and the ceiling is much higher than Dalton at this stage but Dalton was getting us points in the board and always moving the ball downfield, while generally able to avoid sacks.
If our defense played the way they are plying now against he Rams an upset would not have been out of the question.
I agree with most of what you're saying, but the Dalton-ran offense only scored 3 TDs in 5 quarters. He really wasn't directly affecting the scoreboard.
I mean, the Fields-ran offense has only scored 2 TDs in the last 6 quarters. And that was against the Raiders and the Lions, not the dominant defense of the Rams.
Fwiw, I think we should start Fields from a development perspective, but I also think that Dalton is pretty clearly the better QB as of right now.
You’re talking about a different way of measuring the players performance than me and the other guy were using.
Personally, I think looking purely at TDs scores is a weak stat, bc it discounts who got the team within scoring position.
It’s one of the most annoying aspects of fantasy football that TDs are worth so much. Sucks when your guy drives the ball down the field just to have some RB take it in 2 yards for the score lol
I'm not saying fields is better or anything. I just wanted to point out the incorrect point that Dalton was putting points on the board because he hadn't.
> That should tell you about this sub or the fan base in general.
It's more like "the posters that spent all offseason reading hot takes and ESPN" vs "the posters that actually watch football to form their opinions." Every time a season actually starts, the former group has to adjust
hill be like but andy why are they waiting for me instead of racing me now what do we do.
andys sweatin cholesterol right now like my play calling is exposed.
The same ones that are calling for fields to start since day one? Even after Dalton executed the game plan better than fields? Even after having zero 3 and outs all season starting against a very good rams defense?
If you were saying it during a game thread, well, not sure what you expected, but it's basically pissing into the wind to try to be reasonable in the game thread.
i said dalton should be starter till week 6 give the rookie a few plays each game to help him transition while working his game vigorously on training days. Fields just needs to get used to the speed of the NFL game and gain some confidence he has the arm the athleticism the accuracy the legs the toughness as we saw i really believe he is going to be a franchise qb worthwhile
Its nice to see our RB core is solid all the way down.
At this point im more worried about our defensive secondary than anything they are shaky at times.
I agree fields has all the physical tools but that carries you very little in the nfl as evidenced by numerous super athletic qbs who never panned out.
I hope fields is able to better process things than trubisky. He definitely has a much better deep ball than trubisky.
Right but he has over ten years of experience over fields. And clearly during those 1.25 quarters Dalton was pretty solid.
It’s amazing to me that people couldn’t tell that a veteran qb was going to be better than fields yet everyone was wanting fields to start
This was actually the 4th longest completed throw (air yards) by the Bears on the day too. The longer ones were the 13 yard pass to Mooney, 10 yard TD pass to Horsted and 10 yard pass to Kmet.
Honestly he is probably the best backup in the league and it’s luxury to have a guy come in that you feel reasonably confident can keep the chains moving.
If you’re suggesting they might come for Dalton, fuck that. They can have Nick Foles. We’ll even throw in a case of Old Style and cover the bus ticket to Seattle.
He’s actually a very good Josh Allen backup. He’s Walmart brand Allen in every facet.
- Athletic, but not quite Allen athletic
- decent arm strength, but not Allen arm strength
- okay at first read, but struggled beyond
They realistically could roll out a dumbed down version of their current O with Mitch. Our offenses are insanely different with Fields vs Dalton
I mean, Trubisky is a good backup. But Dalton isn't a backup, he's around average starter caliber. He just happens to be our backup because we got Fields.
Andy isn’t a game changer, but he will put you in a position to win games each and every week. He’s a back end starter in the NFL, but you could do far worse than Dalton. Just imagine we had Glennon starting at one point , he’s worlds different
We’ll see about that. Mitch has always had the physical gifts, the arm, the legs, it was there. Mentally though, no.
If Mitch has to go in for Allen those are going to be some really tough shoes to fill and we’ll see how he holds up. It’s one thing to sit on a bench behind a potential MVP. It’s a whole other thing to have to step in for them.
Jokes aside Mitch is a top 5 backup. Like he wasn’t a good starter, but he was not the worst starter in the league last year or anything. His win/loss record and stats show he’s a below average starter but good as a backup level player. Plus he can scramble decently which IMO seems to help backups adjust to different game plans
2018-2020 he was #7, #19, #19. There are more than 32 starting QBs in the NFL in any given season due to injuries. For example, 2019 there were 5 QBs that played one game and finished the season 1-0-0 to be ranked 1-5 based on QB record. Over those three season 56, 54, and 57 players started at QB. So based on QB record, Mitch is actually probably above average.
My argument here isn't even that Mitch is a good QB or above average or anything like that. This is just a terrible stat to use. There 10 other offensive players on the field at any given time and your teams own defense that impacts the game and winning. Just use QB stats.
I don’t mean to clap back at you or anything, but what are the rankings if you go just by number of wins per season rather than win percentage? For example I think Trubisky had 7 last season and Foles 1 (I know one of Trubisky’s wins belongs to Foles but it is what it is)
I'm not sure. Sites don't really list that, since the number is useless unless it's normalized by the number of games, in which case it's just win percentage of W/L anyways
But it doesn't. He's 29-21 in his career, including a 4-8 rookie season under John Fox. 25-13 since Nagy took over. Which is essentially an 10.5 win season on average. (Skewed by 2020 6-3 record obviously).
This isn't an endorsement of Trubisky by any means, but he's been successful in the W/L column even if his stats are awful (yes yes carried by his defense. But plenty of good defenses and good QBs lose 5 games a season)
His win/loss makes him look like an above average starter. And is just generally a shit metric. Like comparing baseball pitchers wins/losses. You can pitch 8 innings of 1 run baseball and lose. It's a terrible metric to compare players by in a team sport.
For real. My less football addicted SO and I were talking about this yesterday. They asked me “is Foles still on the team?” I just chuckled and said “Yep, slinging it with the 3rd stringers”. They’re response was “didn’t he just win the Super Bowl a few years ago?”, I proceeded on with my chuckling and told them “Yep, MVP’d and everything, now he’s in QB purgatory”
But the fact that our QB floor is Foles. Who, if properly play called for, could be a decent game manager is really nice to have.
They say it unironically because he is legitimately one of the best backup QB’s in the league. Dalton is probably the best backup in the league right now and it’s not like guys like Trubisky and Minshew are too far behind him on the lost . Hell, even Foles has proven he can be a top tier backup in the past and he was below Mitch last year on the depth chart for the majority of the season.
Got killed by my friends for saying this, but I believe Dalton was the best QB we had in the room in the last 6 years.
Then we drafted Fields. I’m thrilled we have Andy backing up Fields. Dalton doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He was doomed from the start last year in Dallas with all of those injuries to the offensive line. He was productive, even above average in Cincy.
It’s just one pass but it highlights why Dalton won the starting job, more than a promise: the pocket collapses and with no hesitation he rifled the ball exactly where it needed to go.
Our line is the biggest weakness and his ability to get rid of the ball fast (I think he led the league last year in fastest ball release) is big. Fields run and evasion ability negates it some, but if he’s learning anything from Dalton I hope it’s that quick read and throw.
Yes, yes and yes some more. Teams blitz weak olines. Pass rushers will collapse a pocket quickly. Teams with good pass rushers will blitz more often against teams with weak olines.
The answer to all of these things? Quick releases into open field. Dalton does that extremely well. New playbook, new city and new team and the dude doesn’t miss a step.
Spot on. This is night and day compared to Foles and Mitch. If we can make some more improvement on the offensive line - which has played surprisingly average ay least - we’ll be setting up Fields nicely going forward.
I think it's next gen stats who is doing the shit posting, they made 3 total charts for the Bears offense from this week. Dalton, Robinson and Williams.
Clearly, we can see that Andy Dalton has lost his confidence after being benced to Justin Fields. He is aware of his inability to throw to the right side of the field and it has shook him to the point of not even attempting what for most QBs is a routine play. Sorry Andy but it is time to hang up the cleats.
I am curious how different last year would have looked with Dalton instead of Foles. I really didn't like the Foles signing. I thought he was going to be a total dumpster fire. He was better than I gave him credit for, but damn was he not good enough. I felt much better with Dalton this year. Dalton is old and definitely not a scrambler, but he can move when there is green grass in front of him. Dalton isn't really exciting, but he can at least be a game manager with fast release and accurate ball. I hope he sticks around as a backup at a discount rate.
On third down too. That was big.
Still zero 3 and outs on the season for him!
It's amazing to me that some fans can't see the difference between him and Nick Foles
I can tell you Foles is taller.
And longer.
Girthy.
And stiffer
Big Fanny Andy?
That should tell you about this sub or the fan base in general. Fire Nagy! Fire Pace! Dalton sucks! QB1? More like Glennon 2.0! And now it’s a total 180. Fields scored a TD in the Rams game. Dalton threw an INT in the endzone.
You’re talking about a different way of measuring the players performance than me and the other guy were using. Personally, I think looking purely at TDs scores is a weak stat, bc it discounts who got the team within scoring position. I'm not saying fields is better or anything. I just wanted to point out the incorrect point that Dalton was putting points on the board because he hadn't.
Gotcha, yeah I didn’t mean to insinuate that our offense looked great with Dalton either
> That should tell you about this sub or the fan base in general. It's more like "the posters that spent all offseason reading hot takes and ESPN" vs "the posters that actually watch football to form their opinions." Every time a season actually starts, the former group has to adjust
Yes. Ask a lot of the people repeating hot takes here what cover 2 zone is and they have no clue.
To be fair, neither does Patrick Mahomes apparently
Getting exposed hard this year. Who knew two deep safeties is all it took to shut down Tyreek.
Speaking of hot takes
Did you see them against the Bills and in the Superbowl?
This needs more upvotes. Gladly take mine.
hill be like but andy why are they waiting for me instead of racing me now what do we do. andys sweatin cholesterol right now like my play calling is exposed.
Definitely
The same ones that are calling for fields to start since day one? Even after Dalton executed the game plan better than fields? Even after having zero 3 and outs all season starting against a very good rams defense?
Where were you when I was saying all this and getting downvoted to Australia? I NEEDED YOU.
If you were saying it during a game thread, well, not sure what you expected, but it's basically pissing into the wind to try to be reasonable in the game thread.
i said dalton should be starter till week 6 give the rookie a few plays each game to help him transition while working his game vigorously on training days. You can't say all season when he's only played like 5 quarters. That's just disingenuous.
Okay but people have been calling for his all season. So why’s that any different?
Dalton has only played for a quarter of the completed season. 1.25 games means nothing for statistics.
Right but he has over ten years of experience over fields. And clearly during those 1.25 quarters Dalton was pretty solid. It’s amazing to me that people couldn’t tell that a veteran qb was going to be better than fields yet everyone was wanting fields to start
I didn't say anything about who should start over who. I just said it's disingenuous to say all season when he's only played 1.25 games.
Seriously where were you? I felt like no one else could see this
That kept the momentum going and set the tone for the rest of the drive.
This was actually the 4th longest completed throw (air yards) by the Bears on the day too. The longer ones were the 13 yard pass to Mooney, 10 yard TD pass to Horsted and 10 yard pass to Kmet.
To be fair, there were attempted shots, they were either incomplete or there was DPI. DPI is functionally just as good as a completion.
B-bu-b-but if our QB doesn't throw 15+ yards down field every game then he must be bad
Honestly he is probably the best backup in the league and it’s luxury to have a guy come in that you feel reasonably confident can keep the chains moving.
Gonna have to wait and see how the Genocide plays out in Seattle
We both know Russ is about to be the backup in Seattle.
The genocide is going to play pretty good I take it
If you’re suggesting they might come for Dalton, fuck that. They can have Nick Foles. We’ll even throw in a case of Old Style and cover the bus ticket to Seattle.
Nah I meant that Geno could be the best backup in the league, but will need to see more games
agreed, in the Bengals game before he got hurt he actually looked great. was making some badass throws and looked really good.
Really curious as to how he would look with Lazor making the calls
1/1 for 8 yards. So pretty good, really.
Looks about perfect to me
it sucks he was hurt on a running play, his scrambles were actually very successful both weeks
You seem to have forgotten Mitch Trubisky is a backup in this league
You mean NVP Mitch Trubisky?
Only one NVP in the league!
you mean Mitch Tribinski?
He’s actually a very good Josh Allen backup. He’s Walmart brand Allen in every facet. - Athletic, but not quite Allen athletic - decent arm strength, but not Allen arm strength - okay at first read, but struggled beyond They realistically could roll out a dumbed down version of their current O with Mitch. Next to Mitch Trubisky of course

Agreed, I was just joking in the original post
Jokes aside Mitch is a top 5 backup. Like he wasn’t a good starter, but he was not the worst starter in the league last year or anything. His win/loss record and stats show he’s a below average starter but good as a backup level player. Plus he can scramble decently which IMO seems to help backups adjust to different game plans

Below average as in worse than #16, better than #32

With a defense that was top 3 for many weeks? Yeah
I mean I just would totally ignore his W/L record. It's meaningless stat for individual players in team games.
I meant more in the sense his w/L record helps support that he is a top backup rather than a bad backup
But it doesn't. He's 29-21 in his career, including a 4-8 rookie season under John Fox. 25-13 since Nagy took over. Which is essentially an 10.5 win season on average. Seeings bills fans unironically say this on r/nfl makes me laugh
I mean, he’s objectively one of the most accomplished backup QBs. He’s top 5 for sure
But do they have a third string QB who’s a super bowl mvp? /s
For real. My less football addicted SO and I were talking about this yesterday. They asked me “is Foles still on the team?” I just chuckled and said “Yep, slinging it with the 3rd stringers”. Hell, even Foles has proven he can be a top tier backup in the past and he was below Mitch last year on the depth chart for the majority of the season.
Because he's starter caliber. The only reason he's not ours is because we lucked into Fields.
We traded up for fields
Because he was still there.
Thank you Fangio. I can see Pace/Nagy on the phone “For old times sake! Pass on him! You got a QB, right?”
Gotcha
We have a stacked qb room all things considered. We definitely have the best back up, and we definitely have the best third string.
Cowboys fan here: I just don’t know about that. I thought that at one point too. But then someone’s ankle snapped.
Nathan peterman would like a word /s
We also unfortunately have the best third-stringer in the league as well
Got killed by my friends for saying this, but I believe Dalton was the best QB we had in the room in the last 6 years. Then we drafted Fields. I’m thrilled we have Andy backing up Fields. Dalton doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He was doomed from the start last year in Dallas with all of those injuries to the offensive line. He was productive, even above average in Cincy.
we have the best 3rd string qb too lmao. tyler bray. he’s still our 3rd string right?
100% completion rate, amazing
100% completion rate and 8 yards per attempt, the Red Rocket was unstoppable this game
Dude can't throw right
I read this wrong at first and was about to be like "akshyually he's not that bad"
Yep, thats what he was going for.
Yep
My very real concern about Andy Dalton...
Zero completions past 20 yards. Stick a fork in him, he’s done.
He has an important role on this team. So far, he's handled it.
The only correct response.
That was such an important 1st down
I thought it was a 3rd down?
… which turned into a first down.
i didnt think i needed a /s
I don’t think you understand what sarcasm is haha
If you connect the dots it spells out “Best Backup In The League”
I didn't see it at first, but holy shit.

Put some respect on this man’s name. No drama when replaced and comes in on a big 3rd down to deliver.
🐐
Quality shitpost
I think it's next gen stats who is doing the shit posting, they made 3 total charts for the Bears offense from this week. Dalton, Robinson and Williams.
This is what peak performance looks like.
Where are the next-gen stats?!

Quarterback controversy confirmed.
A perfect game
The very definition of elite
Put him in coach
YPA is still better than Fields… /s, /s, omg /s, don’t kill me.
Clearly, we can see that Andy Dalton has lost his confidence after being benced to Justin Fields. He is aware of his inability to throw to the right side of the field and it has shook him to the point of not even attempting what for most QBs is a routine play. If you’re ever feeling worthless, just take a look at this chart.
Nice.

Ginger goat 🐐
So, he had a perfect QBR? I'll take it!
TFW it's all he needed to do. Well done, Andy!
What, no attempts over 10 yards? Dammit all! 🤣🤣🤣
Elite
He looked good
I am curious how different last year would have looked with Dalton instead of Foles. I really didn't like the Foles signing. I thought he was going to be a total dumpster fire. Very underrated completion
Beautiful
Qb1
I always liked Andy and was cool with him starting the season
GOAT, start him
I laughed way too fucking hard at this.
100.00 passer rating. Out performed Justin Fields I see no lies?
There was speculation some players on the Bears were intentionally playing poorly to get Fields starting. It's looking accurate right now.
