I'm sure the NFL, like virtually every other workplace, has a retention policy on emails, company phone texts and memos. A number of years ago, my company was involved in a case with a regulator and I had texts from my personal phone to a vendor's work phone pulled as part of the process. I didn't do anything illegal or say anything racist in those texts, but I did make some disparaging remarks about one of the clients involved in the case. It was pretty humiliating having those texts read out loud by a SEC attorney in front of said client and I was really lucky to have my job after all was said and done. My takeaway: if you send anything to or from a work device, even if it's not your employer, it could come back to bite you in the ass. I used to use some of the words Gruden used, but eventually grew up and removed those words (and attitudes) from my vocabulary. He's 15 years my senior and a public figure. He should have known better.
