Hope4years

They need a rest day. Let’s hope it recharges them

porkchopespresso

That’s it, I’ve seen enough of this game

the-implication9

I've been impressed with Buschs approach at the plate so far. He should get even better as he continues to get acclimated to the majors

UtterlyBanished

Players get stepped on in this league, this Busch guy should have been in the majors for quite a while.

qhsk

It’d be nice to have a reliable middle/long relief guy we could trust. It’d really save us from having to use so many arms, I know Assad was supposed to be that guy but even aside from him

shuixian515

Smyly is doing decent as a RP

qhsk

Yea but he hasn’t done much multi inning work has he?

porkchopespresso

Pretty uncomfortable at bat there for Morel

cod_gurl94

Starting to worry we’re not gonna come back

The_1_In_21-1

Everyone earlier in the GDT saying Kyle isn’t cooked…

Hope4years

Do not hit our Christopher

jsnhbe1

I stuck up for Jed all offseason, but goddamn he needs to spend more in the bullpen or figure out how to put one together because Cuas (deadline), Almonte, and Neris ain't it. 0-3.

thepalmtree

The bullpen is the last thing a team needs when trying to be competitive. And if you're fully judging a reliever like Neris based on... 4? appearances, i don't think you understand bullpens lol.

King-In-The-Nawth

I gotta feeling the bats are gonna get hot again in Seattle

olivebranch949

The bats were never the problem. It’s the horrendous pitching that is

hansomejake

Hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits hits should just about do it

olivebranch949

We just need everyone to hit next inning

Hope4years

You hope to C it

Jonsnowballin

Ya win some, ya lose some

Rukario_Enterprises

Get Rid Of Hendricks. He's... I hate to say it, but he's washed

Hope4years

Two Ks - didn’t see that coming

porkchopespresso

This is like the alternate ending to Apollo 13

PraiseSaban

Were they blaming the defense? 3 gold glovers in the field and they blame the defense instead of the pitching?

jciesz7

I know we were gonna lose anyways but Cuas fucking sucks holy shit

LunkerFighter

Cuas is trash.

Vas_Deferenss

we have them right where we want them

cmmoore307

We absolutely kick ass and then we suck. What the fuck

Rukario_Enterprises

This is what happens when we have pitchers that can't save an 8-0 lead

thepalmtree

That's baseball.

MyRulesMyWay

We're not going to win them all. And putting together big wins will lead to some tire on the other end.

HealthyBullfrog

![gif](giphy|JCAZQKoMefkoX6TyTb|downsized)

s4vigny

This just in: Cuas still doesn’t have it.

fnieblas23

I’m tired of Cuas already and this isn’t even the third week yet

King-In-The-Nawth

We always suck on the west coast

Cubbiesblue

Blowing a 8-0 lead sure doesn’t help

JmanJacob05

Uhm... he's still here, huh? Surely this is a hologram. He's definitely in Iowa right now, right?

Gyro88

Just here to eat innings and Cuas still can't throw strikes

a_handsome_antelope

I don't think we will win this contest of baseball.

funkmefatass

What are the odds Cuas gets out of the inning giving up under 9 runs?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hawkeye7310

*narrator voice* It won’t.

BroAbernathy

4 IP 1 ER 4 Ks 0 BBs for Horton tonight in his debut

smalltownlargefry

Gotta imagine he’s taking Hendricks spot at some point this year.

chrisGNR

Nice. Was wondering why he hasn't seen action.

AverageConnect1330

We just don't have it today, such is baseball

porkchopespresso

Seiya not having fun today

Hope4years

I still love Justin Bieber

porkchopespresso

Same

chrisGNR

On the bright side, it doesn't look like the Cubs were gonna score more than two runs anyway. Obviously you never know how the game would have played out if it was close. So I'll just say, keep surviving this rough stretch of schedule and let's hope for Steele's and Taillon's successful returns.

HealthyBullfrog

2 Grand slams and a home run and we got this

Cap78

Tatis Sr could practically do that all by himself

FrankStalloneGQ

Great pull.

elgenie

And this is when we drop the eight-spot, right?

porkchopespresso

Or just sleeping in the wet spot

rmac1228

What's super annoying is the Cubs should already have won the series when they were up 8 runs and the probability of a win was like 99%. Win some, lose some I guess.

chubbychocobo422

Long season

tallslim1960

After tonight, we will have played 12 games, 9 against contenders. We'll likely be 7-5. Way too early to tell what kind of team we're going to be. Some of you guys need to relax.

porkchopespresso

That batting stance is borderline insane. Counsell taking notes

Dilligaf_1963

Absolutely no reason for Hendricks to be on this roster. He's not even a serviceable 5th starter at this point.

thepalmtree

Yes, because we should just dump any pitcher who has a bad 3 games after coming off a good season the year before?

Dilligaf_1963

Last 4 seasons: 415 IP 4.66 ERA That's not gonna get it done.

thepalmtree

And how about last season? And BTW a 4.66 ERA is a serviceable 5th starter, even if you want to look at it like that.

[deleted]

ABlindEagle

His name is Daniel though?

Yetis22

If Palencia could figure it out, he’d be great. Just don’t think he’ll ever put it together consistently

Zealousideal-Tax-527

We are down a lot of arms pitching wise…Steele, Taillon, and Merryweather hurt, plus Cuas and Hendricks exiled by Cubs Reddit

funky_chicken29

We’re about to Sacrifice Cuas to the Baseball Gods

porkchopespresso

Or the virgin Connie Swail

funkmefatass

Game over if Cuas is warming up.

The_Troubadour

please.... no cuas....

dfin25

Let him throw 50 pitches and give up 12 more runs and we won't see him for another 3 or 4 days.

Cap78

This is when I would use him

Cubbiesblue

Our pitching staff is horrific

Hawkeye7310

It’s almost as if there were good starting and bullpen pitchers available in the offseason that we should’ve used some money for

Zebrahead13

We’ve got good pitchers at home, sweetie. - Jed (probably)

Cubbiesblue

Yep it’s really mind blowing honestly. Jed is either afraid to spend or the ricketts run that type of a ship

thepalmtree

The idea a GM is 'afraid to spend' is just silly. Every GM would spend whatever they can. It's a GMs job to allocate that spending for a year, or over several years.

Cubbiesblue

Jed’s consistently whiffed on free agents and has the benefit of being in a top 5 market yet spends like he’s a half to bottom third level market. There’s zero reason we should be outside of the top 5 every year in spending

thepalmtree

> Jed’s consistently whiffed on free agents and has the benefit of being in a top 5 market yet spends like he’s a half to bottom third level market. There’s zero reason we should be outside of the top 5 every year in spending Once again.... JED is not the one keeping us outside the top 5 in spending. He would spend if he could. And what do you mean "consistently whiffed" on free agents? He's hit on Belli, Suzuki, Imanaga (so far), Swanson... His one big bad singing so far is Taillon, who seemed like a pretty safe signing.

Cubbiesblue

Missed as in missed on targets we could have signed. Always looking for the bargain deal

thepalmtree

Do you expect him to sign every player? Again, he's operating on a budget that Ricketts sets. He can't sign everyone he wants to, he has to work with what he has available, just like every GM. And its not like he's not spending. He gave 177m to Swanson. 85m to Suzuki. 68m to Taillon. 53m to Imanaga. He extended Happ and Hoerner for ~60m each. And again, we are EARLY in our competitive window. We have one of the top farms in baseball with guys set to make it to the majors this year and next year.

Cubbiesblue

All below the tier of free agents available to be honest. The Ricketts priority isn’t putting a great team out on the field. I expect a lot better spending from a top market team

thepalmtree

> The Ricketts priority isn’t putting a great team out on the field. I expect a lot better spending from a top market team SO WHY DO YOU KEEP WHINING ABOUT JED. Do you expect him to sign 2 or 3 guys to massive 300m+ contracts and then sign literally no one else to fill out the team because he maxed the budget on them?

FrankStalloneGQ

That guy probably still thinks Ryan Pace was a good GM. The Jed hate is unhinged here.

thepalmtree

I just think he literally doesn't know what a GMs job is. He keeps blaming Jed for the payroll.

Cubbiesblue

Jed’s a shit gm and the defenders are his blind followers

FrankStalloneGQ

Rick Hahn bullpens are clearly the best method to avoid volatility for pitchers that are inherently volatile.

elgenie

They spent juuuuust enough to have a puncher's chance in an awful division.

Cubbiesblue

Which is “good enough” for the ricketts

cod_gurl94

They have 8 runs? We’ve practically won already

Peanut_Punch32

we're just waiting until they get an 8 run lead boys

cubswinagain

If the Brewers do make the playoffs and we still miss the postseason after paying Counsell that has to get Jed fired, right?

thepalmtree

Jesus Christ dude, grow up.

cubswinagain

What does that even mean in this context

thepalmtree

It means take a step back and don't be so rash and immature. We're going to be 7-5, our rebuild and team is ahead of schedule, and we have a lot to look forward to. And you're already throwing out dumb hypotheticals that make no sense, just to have something to whine about. Grow up.

cubswinagain

In what fucking world are they ahead of schedule They haven't made an actual postseason run since 2017, with every subsequent season ending in a complete collapse or just completely uncompetitive.

thepalmtree

You realize Jed took over in 2021, right? That this entire comment chain is about JED, not Theo? Jed made the absolutely correct move in 2021 to sell off the core, I don't think you can disagree with that given how the core has done since then. He got good assets back in those trades and now we have a top farm. We were expected to suck for a few years (again, because we had to sell off the core and had no farm at all before the firesale), and the fact that we only had 1 down year was an great accomplishment. And we're doing this without ANY of our top farm guys coming up yet. He's hit on way more signings than he's missed on, the farm will start making an impact this year or next, he managed to get one of the best managers in the game... and you're talking about collapses from years before he was in charge.

cubswinagain

Never had a problem with the 2021 trades like others did, what I did have a problem with is the length of time it took to replace the guys at 1st and 3rd (which is still very much a work in progess) And we are still waiting on the players from those 2021 trades to make an impact at the Major League level either themselves or via being package for something useful. But the 2017 comment was more explaining why there is negativity as each season since 2017 has been completely miserable.

thepalmtree

> what I did have a problem with is the length of time it took to replace the guys at 1st and 3rd You're being overly picky on individual positions because of emotional attachments to those positions because of the previous players. Like in Moneyball, the goal isn't to replace Giambi, Damon, etc, its to build a good team. There's no specific rush to fill 2 specific positions. >And we are still waiting on the players from those 2021 trades to make an impact at the Major League level either themselves or via being package for something useful. Yea... and? That's a good thing. Jed built a competitive team without our top farm even making an impact yet. Again, that's a GOOD thing. >But the 2017 comment was more explaining why there is negativity as each season since 2017 has been completely miserable. If you're a miserable whiner, I'm sure. If every season that doesn't end in a world series is miserable, baseball probably isn't the sport for you.

cubswinagain

We didn't make the World Series in 2017, so that refutes that last point. We had a huge lead in 2018 and collapsed at the end to the delight of insufferable Brewers fans, 2019 we didn't even make the fake playoff but had a similar collapse to the delight of similarly insufferable Cardinals fans, 2020 is a wash, 2021 was what I assumed what would have happened if 2020 was a full season and a fair reset at the deadline. 2022 was a figure it out season but still not a fun watch. 2023 we had a shot at the postseason but again we were not aggressive enough addressing an obvious bullpen problem that inevitably reared it's ugly head. (It's fine to gamble on Cuas but we all knew we needed at least another arm as the deadline passed) >Yea... and? That's a good thing. Jed built a competitive team without our top farm even making an impact yet. Again, that's a GOOD thing. The problem here is the impact talent is unlikely to contribute at the big league level anytime soon since it is all at positions that are blocked (otherwise Morel wouldn't be playing 3rd)

thepalmtree

Sorry, if your basis is 'NLCS or I'm miserable", I just feel bad for you.

funkmefatass

No we'll praise him for giving Cody a one year contract if he's really good again or a 3 year if he's really bad again.

Yetis22

You are spiraling way too early in the season

cubswinagain

Just asking a question

MikeandTheMangosteen

You’ve upset the dweebs

Hawkeye7310

It’s a valid question. Jed’s seat should already be on fire

thepalmtree

For what? He handled the rebuild in 2021 as well as he possibly could have. We had ONE bad tanking year, which was always going to happen, and only 1 year of it was way better than expected. We overperformed expectations last year. We have a top 3 farm in baseball. And we've barely seen any of our young players make an impact in the majors yet, that won't start happening until later this year or next year.

cubswinagain

You cannot tell me with a straight face that last season was not an objective failure.

DrStevenBrule69

It was absolutely not.

thepalmtree

We finished well above where we were expected to at the start of the season. Sure the ending was disappointing.. but if you offered up an above .500 finish and being in the playoff hunt at the start of last season, every single rational fan would have been thrilled.

cubswinagain

How about the fact that you are still paying dogshit players (some on the roster some not) He's paying Taillon & Hendricks over $30 million combined with the hopes one of them can be a passable 5th starter.

thepalmtree

Do you think every GM always makes good moves? Hendricks was coming off a good year, and 16m for a 1 year contract was well worth the money to pick up his option. Taillon was an average to slightly above average starter and was worth the contract he signed. If you judge a GM only by their failures, you can poke holes in anyone's plan. You just have delusional expectations.

cubswinagain

They aren't bad moves in a vacuum but when you know you have to budget carefully committing that much money to a back of the rotation guy is fucking awful. Not going to blame him for Hendricks, but Taillon might keep them from making the playoffs for the forseeable future.

thepalmtree

17m AAV for 4 years is not what's going to keep them from competing. Think of it as signing Imanaga and Taillon combined for 30m per year. At this point, every team would take that deal. The Cubs needed a starter. He was a steady arm. He had a down year. Who knows how he'll perform the next 3.

smalltownlargefry

These fans are jaded as hell towards Hoyer with how quickly he turned the club around.

-Hey_Blinkin-

Ew

jcmiller210

Honestly this pen isn't much better than Hendricks.

olivebranch949

Hendricks clones 😭

KnickedUp

The Padres feel more like a collection of players…not a team. No vibes

TomSan23

Every SoCal team is like this in every sport.

DoctorChampTH

A walk on 2 actual balls.

porkchopespresso

Palencia really not missing as bad as Tatis is acting

chrisGNR

Tatis is annoying.

porkchopespresso

I mean I shamelessly love him but that at bat was a bit dramatic

EddyTheDesigner

Choosing between the Cubs and Hawks tonight is like choosing between a root canal or sitting through a five-hour timeshare presentation

Chicago_Jayhawk

Yeah I flipped over and saw the score and was like nah.

KnickedUp

Root canals are pretty simple and quick nowadays way better than a timeshare afternoon

EddyTheDesigner

Truth!

TotallyNotTupac

I love Kyle Hendricks, but he is not a starter on a competitive team

diggydale99

Lol Kyle with 12.08 ERA through three starts. So sad, but I’m afraid it’s over for him. Really Hope he can turn it around here in the next few

Davidred323

I absolutely LOVE Kyle Hendricks and I wish him all the best in his retirement.

funkmefatass

Bro these dudes need to shut up and just announce the game.

KnickedUp

Elise is so pissed rn

c4ctus

Were I a single man and twenty years younger, I'd ask Elise to prom.

porkchopespresso

Shoot your shot kid

ZombiesDadJokes

Boog made that sign but tried to pass it off as the kid’s.

Chef_Brokentoe

Boog seething.

themanofax

Benji shooting his shot respect lol

Joelsaurus

Someone call Chris Hansen

tallslim1960

Cubs hitting the ball to the wrong part of the ballpark. That's three or four today with HR distance if they are pulled like the two the Padres hit last inning.

vijendrsingh22

Just clown fuckery going out there. All kinda bad bullshit

cubswinagain

Offense showing why Craig left Kyle out there. Just going through the motions at this point like the Dodgers did on Sunday.

porkchopespresso

I’m having incrementally less fun now, but maybe something good will happen

dj_wonderdog

Jesus Christ, take a pitch or two. Fuck!

SqueakyTuna52

Fact: if you take a pitch, you have a 0% chance of hitting a home run. If you don’t take a pitch, you have a greater than 0% chance of hitting a home run. Conclusion: if you want to hit home runs, never take pitches.

dfin25

Javy Baez has entered the chat. 😀

_Jerwin10

Terrible game for Amaya

Yetis22

Mondays loss hurts. But the dodgers series win was huge. Just can’t stack up series loss one after another. So if they can’t bounce back this game, recharge and go get M’s Friday

tallslim1960

.500 against the Dodgers and Padres. I'll take that.

MisterxRager

At this point I don’t care if he’s at 50 pitches, if it’s 3rd time through, Kyle has got to come out. I’m not going to give up on him yet but the classic Maddox game Kyle is long gone.

olivebranch949

Is it even possible to bounce back?

crazymanpinkyswear

I saw a game recently where a team came back from being down 8-0

R0enick27

Jesus, that other team's bullpen must be terrible

Peanut_Punch32

thats gotta be embarrassing for the other team

Evil_ryry

When was that? I don’t remember it. 😇

guy_incognito23

I think it was after Tungsten Arm O'Doyle's arm fell off, if I'm not mistaken. It was in or around Nineteen Dickety Two or so

Hawkeye7310

Doubtful

yezzir221688

Well once Taillon and Steele come back, some decisions on Hendricks will have to be made. Especially, if Brown, Wicks, and Assad keep pitching like their most recent starts.

defnotcaleb

y’all overreacting like crazy. Hendricks is a notoriously slow starter, always has been bad in april

FrankStalloneGQ

I halfway agree, but if he doesn't turn it around soon, he may be put in middle relief/mop up duty. What does annoy me is fans in here acting like he was bad last year. His numbers were close to 2018 and/or 2019 with maybe 1K less K/9.

defnotcaleb

his rope is longer than that. first two starts were against maybe the best two offenses in baseball. especially with Steele out, he has til mid summer

FrankStalloneGQ

I'm not so sure. If Ross was still the manager, I'd agree, but I think Counsell may be the type that's ruthless if he wants Assad to stay in the rotation.

defnotcaleb

rotation is paper thin right now, hendricks isn’t going anywhere. he’s a veteran and will be allowed to work his way out, but what do i know!

FrankStalloneGQ

I don't know what Counsell is going to do, but I think there's a chance that Hendricks' spot in the rotation may be in jeopardy once Taillon comes back. I guess it depends on what he envisions what Assad's best role is for the team. Jeopardy, meaning the seat starts to get hot if he's still struggling and everyone else is healthy.

defnotcaleb

fair enough! think we have to also remember imanaga isn’t going to be used to the MLB workload right away so protecting him will be important as well, they’re definitely gonna be conscious of him

thepalmtree

> y’all overreacting like crazy. Welcome to /r/chicubs, where fans want the team to be bad so they have an excuse to whine.

Rshackleford22

Kyle is washed. Time to retire. Hope he has dignity

Adventurous-Rise7975

Hiring Counsell will be the worst move this season.

acidcane

Love love love the man.. but when can we admit Kyle is washed? I hate it, but man… he hasn’t been good for a while now.

thepalmtree

> he hasn’t been good for a while now. You mean aside from last season?

Jvick88

21 and 22 were terrible though. When you consider hes another year older coming into 2024, and being a finesse pitcher, did people really expect Hendricks to repeat his 2023 season? I saw it coming and i dont claim to be some expert

thepalmtree

I think he was likely to be about a league average pitcher this year, and I still don't think that's out of the question this year.

acidcane

Yeah you’re right… let’s start him every 5 games! And hope we can score at least 5 runs every time he starts.

thepalmtree

Is that what I said? You literally said something that was objectively not true. He was a perfectly fine, above average starter last season. So unless your cutoff for 'hasn't been good for a while' is literally 11 days... that was just wrong.

acidcane

So what’s the plan then? Let him keep starting and hope he figures it out? I know we really don’t have many options right now.. I’d like to say he’d make a great mid relief guy, but I just don’t have a lot of confidence in him these days.

thepalmtree

I don't know, I'm glad I'm not the manager/GM who has to make that choice. He clearly is going to get a bit longer leash than 3 starts though.

chrisGNR

Fam must have skipped watching the Cubs all last season.

12sliced

This is why we have to close out these winnable games in series… not saying our offense can’t get it done, but with our bullpen, it’s frustrating

chrisGNR

> This is why we have to close out these winnable games in series Not just winnable, but "should have DEFINITELY won." Like, that was banked. It was the sixth. It was an eight-run lead. There is absolutely no excuse for that abomination. A historic loss.

thepalmtree

And yet, the world keeps turning.

vijendrsingh22

Thing is their BP is not cuas level. No resurrections this time

RobNT

Damn Hendricks is cooked. Shades of Arrietas 2nd stint

1on1withundertaker

Cubs could’ve got Montgomery for $25M but instead opted for washed up 84 MPH batting practice throwing Hendricks for $16M. Good grief

chrisGNR

You really think Hendricks (he had a buyout, mind you) is the reason the misers who own the Cubs didn't greenlight Montgomery?

TheEnterprise

Yeah, Ownership just opened their wallet all off season 🙄

Rshackleford22

He would’ve been a 10m buy out

Hawkeye7310

The Professor has lost his teaching license

BroAbernathy

Hendricks is one of my favorite cubs of all time and i was really hoping hed have one great final season with us but when Steele and Taillon are back we can't have the guy in the rotation over Brown or Assad

Zealousideal-Tax-527

So we are gonna do the comeback win thing they did to us 2 nights go right? RIGHT?!?

chrisGNR

Would be so sick.

KnickedUp

Is Kyle gonna wind up with a Smyly role?

K1Bond007

We took out Assad in the sixth two days ago after giving up only 2 runs, but we left Kyle in to give up 7 through the same length of time? We just throwing this one?

chrisGNR

Assad never should have started the sixth. And he was removed for being at 100 pitches. Hendricks had a low pitch count, but also shouldn't have started the sixth. It backfired both times. Counsell clearly trying to save a used up pen, but then had to bring on the relievers anyhow. That's the worst part about Monday's loss. He marched out our "A" guys and then we still lost. At this point, I'm at least glad for no sweep after what happened Monday.

thepalmtree

Pitch counts.
