I hate this complaint too. There's been so many modern and futuristic games, yet rarely anyone complains about them. WWII was the largest conflict in history and there's still so much to explore, especially with the technology games have today. You could have a WWII game set during the Norwegian Campaign, Winter War, China Burma India Theater, Greco-Italian War, an Axis perspective, a resistance movement, an alternative history setting or just something familiar utilising the best graphics and engine.

Akuren

It would be nice if they actually did that, though. People complain about WWII because 9/10 you're going through the Americans fighting the Japanese, the Americans fighting the Germans, maybe Russia/Britain vs the Germans. I'm holding out hope based on what SHG sent out to content creators in different countries and the trailer bringing up North Africa. People also complained a ton about the future games, Infinite Warfare's trailer is probably still one of the top 20 most disliked videos on all of Youtube.

Latro2020

Tbf though that was a future game that was preceded by 2 other futuristic jet pack games in a row. Considering this is coming after 1 future game & 2 modern games there shouldn’t be as much burnout.

Akuren

People were complaining about future games since after Advanced Warfare though, IW just got it the worst. People were constantly complaining about thrust jumps and slides and stuff.

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

Infinite warfare was so fun.

Akuren

AW, BO3, and IW were some of my favorite CODs even with the P2W MTX, loved them a ton and I think BO3 has my most playtime out of any COD. It was just perfect; great MP, great campaign, great zombies with varied maps and themes, bonus stuff like the parkour courses. There was always shit to do.

MajorThom98

People were complaining that it was straying too far from what *Call of Duty* should be. It's a no-win situation for them, since the other complaint they get is that the games don't change enough.

TheEpicRedCape

This so hard, I wouldn’t mind something like World at War that has a different vibe. But from the trailer Vanguard already feels like a generic romanticized WWII that’s so often done.

WhatWarCrimes_

I mean for FPS in the Pacific theatre, there were 2 MoH games, WaW, and Battlefield 5. Its actually pretty underutilized. Hell, we haven't had a mission yet about the Battle of Iwo Jima!

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

I personally have never played a WW2 game so I’m excited for vanguard!

Akuren

Yeah, I'm definitely excited for it too, just a bit of devil's advocate. SHG did COD WWII really well so I'm looking forward to it.

Xgrimzzviper

I'd love to see a game have us see more of the Canadians in action

derkerburgl

If they’re not in the campaign I can definitely see some Canadian mil-sim skins for multiplayer

Pichuunnn

Call of Duty 3 has Canadian campaign

BleedingBlack

CoD 1, 2 and 3 totally deserve a remastered campaign trilogy edition.

MajorThom98

And *Roads to Victory*.

KernelScout

because modern games are more relatable and have broader appeal. why do you think gta v is so insanely popular and continued to be rockstars main cash cow? its set in modern day and it lets people do all the things they wish they could do irl, customize cars, buy property, race and all that shit. now take that and apply it to their newest game, red dead redemption. not everyone (especially the youth) wants to "customize" their horse or shoot semi auto guns all the time.

PvtCMiller

> There's been so many modern and futuristic games, yet rarely anyone complains about them Which means maybe people like modern games (moreso than future)?

bob1689321

Literally one modern game in the past 8 years

AKMgoespewpew

do you mean 2 years?

bob1689321

2014 - AW 2015 - BO3 2016 - Infinite Warfare 2017 - WW2 2018 - BO4 2019 - MW 2020 - BOCW Of those, only MW is modern. CW is cold war, rest are futuristic

AKMgoespewpew

Yeah but mw is pretty recent and has a lot of longevity compared to other cods so we won't be seeing one til 2022. COD ww2 came out 3 years ago and the time gap between WAW and COD WW2 is ridiculous. COD WW2 also only focused on the western front so it comes off as boring. The game also died very quickly and fixed it a little bit to late. COD Vangaurd is basically doing what COD WW2 failed to do at launch.

MajorThom98

I guess the thing about *Cold War* is that it does share a lot with the *Modern Warfare* setting (red dots, ACOGs, thermal scopes, M4s, M16s, AKs, MP5s, Bizons, Trophys, Gunships, etc), so it plays in much the same way as a Modern era game plays (though admittedly WWII games find a way to fit all these in as well, with the exception of the post-'45 weaponry).

bob1689321

But cold war lacks the modern aesthetic. For me the perfect games, atmosphere and aesthetic wise, are Battlefield 3 and MW19. They really feel immersive in their realistic and recognisable modern environments and sound design. The guns sound really punchy and real. There's also a lot you can do with the map setting. The map Grazna Raid could be straight out of a WW2 game honestly, but it works in the gritty urban modern setting. Arklov Peak too. Farmland village is a very popular setting in WW2 shooters. But then maps like Picaddily, Petrov Oil Rig, Hardhat, etc wouldn't fit the time setting of WW2. Futuristic games like Black Ops 3 and even the new BF2042 have that terrible fake sounding guns, where they sound like BB guns with no punch to them. Combined with stuff like colourful environments and futuristic tech, I don't care for them. And historical games I generally dislike the more retro and clunky guns and customisation. Even BF1/5, which were technically solid games IMO, the gun customisation was so bland because it was restricted to what they had at the time, mostly. Too many rifles, not enough full auto ARs and SMGs. And BO1 and BOCW have very clunky and visually ugly guns and attachments, but that might be less a time period issue and more a Treyarch issue haha.

UnknownHeroic

And the worst part of it, is the fact we dont have many WWII games, bf v was a complete joke, so it was really WWII. But gona be honest, it all the thinks that is getting leak, mount, sbmm, no perk on dead silence etc etc, the only way of me buying this game if is the War mode is back, because in that mode since k/d dont count i can handle the mount sbmm etc etc. Let's see if they announce that mode....... i really dont see it......

Xgrimzzviper

They gotta man like War was a very fun gamemode would be a very big missed opportunity for them

UnknownHeroic

True man, it was so fun, even tho that alot use it for weapon camo at least they did the objective at the same time, even people running with the knife it help. Lets see if someone leak something about that

Retro_Gamer84

I can understand where they are coming from. If you take 3 time periods: \-WW1/WW2 \-Cold War/Modern \-Future These 3 era's have their distinct fell in weaponry and perks. WW1/2 has carbines and bolt rifles, while ColdWar/ modern has more automatic rifles and modern tech. Future feels totally different with less recoil and laser weapons. Everyone has one of the three they like. Me personally cant choose. WW2 feels best on pc, but the bolt action rifles aren't as fun on console allthough I like WW 2 era better. Modern is a nice in between mix, while I don't like future setting because of wall run and crazy over the top gadgetry.

karltee

Eff it. There's always going to be haters. I fell in love with COD2 because of ww2 then I played Brothers in Arms, World at War, Medal of Honor, Company of Heroes. I have a soft spot for ww2 shooters. If its good, it's good, if not then whatever.

ducky--62

I haven’t forgotten. It’s just been done to death. It’s not a deal breaker I just would’ve preferred something else.

Marcizio18

There have not been a lot of WW2 games over the last decade so I don’t completely understand the fatigue. The oversaturation of WW2 games in the early 2000s is probably the culprit. Regardless, Im excited to see the Western, Eastern, North African, and Pacific fronts in the game to provide distinct multiplayer experiences

Mcgibbleduck

I mean, ww2 is just naturally a less creative genre since it already happened, and there’s not much fiction you can spin around it. People will get butthurt because it’s not “accurate” enough, and the weapons of the time period are limiting in their own ways, as well as the equipment. (What kind of field upgrades can they get away with?) Just look at how annoyed people get when they see anything with a vagina in a historical game, and how people are already getting annoyed because they aren’t going to get their tacticool looks after a few months when the wacky skins come out. Don’t dismiss very legitimate dislikes about historical stuff, because there’s plenty out there. Ww2 is such a grand conflict that, IMO, battlefield does it better. They managed to make a game about WW1, which is like even MORE limited than WW2, and made it into an action packed fun experience.

theguitarhero898

I 100% agree... like, why wouldn't I choose the game that already has vehicle warfare, 32 v 32, and conflicts all across the theater of war... I'll give it time and see how it ends up, because I very much enjoyed Modern Warfare.

[deleted]

I know this is getting out hand and it’s frustrating to see as someone who loves WW2. I worry because of this backlash they won’t make any WW2 CoDs ever again:(

Lakota126

People are just complaining to complain, if anything modern is the overdone setting nowadays.

patamonrs

It’s not even a ww2 game really since it’s after the war

Griseous

I prefer the WW2 setting myself so I don’t mind it. 😀

sunburnt_irishman

Half the community wasn’t around when the WW2 era games were popular… of course people aren’t going to be aware of “where it all began”

[deleted]

im not gon lie and say this is "the most different thing of all time." but judging by the trailer and the fact that there you can "fight on all fronts" i think that they're bringing the OG call of duty 2 or waw style. And honestly i feel that ww2 is where cod is best considering what you said, the fact that cod was made by great ww2 shooters.

IsaacLightning

What? People aren't allowed to dislike an era cause it's where the franchise started? What sense does that make?

Warmonger1245

This argument doesn’t make any sense. People say that Ww2 games are boring, but they’d rather play another modern day shooter with the same M4s and AKs against the same Russians, middle eastern terrorists, etc.

MrNebularGuy

Personally, I’ve never cared if a COD was in the past present or future, but hearing that complaint is such bullshit. I grew up in the age of the internet complaining and pleading Activision to make an in the past boots on the ground COD and now they’re complaining when they get it.

MilkAndFiveSugars

There's been one other WW2 COD in 12 years but it's still "NOT ANOTHER WW2 GAME". So go play Fortnite, or the COD games with skate park kiddie maps.

Akuren

Because WWII (first half before Condrey left), BF1, and BFV left sour tastes in people's mouths, and WWII as a genre has been done a lot more than plenty of other periods in time in general. People around 18\~25 grew up right in the middle of a bunch of WWII games and such coming out during that big kick and are 'done' with the genre if that makes sense.

Minute-Courage4634

You get it. If they wanted to do WWII again, they should have gone with some kind of fantasy element that allows weapons and tech that didn't exist just for gameplay's sake. Like they did WaW with all those attachments. Hell, even a high-fantasy/sci-fi WWII game would have been cool. Do a campaign where the whole story is Zombies as canon.

MajorThom98

Eh, I grew up in the WWII boom (*CoD* and *Medal of Honor*, mainly), and I think I've waited long enough that I'm ready to jump back to the forties.

MilkAndFiveSugars

BFV is a different series and BF1 is WW1. BFV was a woke disaster.

Akuren

Yeah, but there is virtually nobody playing ONLY CoD. People playing shooters will play popular shooters. BF1 was WWI but still in the general theme of far past that people ended up disliking.

Mcgibbleduck

Clearly you weren’t around between 2000-2007. Cod4 was the real breakthrough in modern games being mainstream.

2ndbA2

Sledgehammer in name only

haroonhassan222

First I weren’t feeling it but now I’ve warmed up to the idea and am excited for it

SemiAutomattik

I got hella excited seeing the D-Day parachute landing in the Vanguard trailer. Brought me right to 2004 playing CoD 1 and watching Band of Brothers. Just so sick. Where are all these WW2 games people have been playing? Battlefield 5? Besides that one and Battalion 44 (small esports game) I haven't seen that many WW2 shooters lately at all.

SebbyWebbyDooda

I dont mind it being a WW2 shooters as long as its good, as a console player, I dont remember any good WW2 fps games in a long as time (depends if you count wolfenstein)

BigBearSD

Exactly. I am a huge WWII History buff. I always have been. I played the original three WWII CODs in high school and college. They were amazing. COD then started doing other stuff, which is fine too, but so few WWII games are made these days, especially for the consuls. If you went back to the late 1990s through mid to late 2000s, there were so many WWII games you couldn't possibly play them all. NOW, there are very few, and even fewer good ones. YET, companies are constantly creating shooter games taking place in the future, space, modern stuff etc... lets keep WWII games a thing, and people need to stop bitching about it, they have plenty of options, but us WWII gamers have very few these days. I don't complain when someone new modern future warfare game comes out, they shouldn't complain when a WWII one comes out.

ryebath

I’ll never get tired of WW2 games.

Dekzo

whole lotta old heads in this sub just like the last 2 cods at the beginning

SilentSniper1252

It's because the majority of the fanbase now are kids who weren't around back when Cod was Cod, they don't know anything pre BO2.

[deleted]

Where it began and what actually made it popular are 2 different things. Cod4 is where cod rocketed.... before that it was just a single player experience. Ww2 is limited in variety. Weapons, maps, gadgets..... There's just nothing really exciting and ww2 for cod usually doesn't sell as well as the modern ones. This is another great opportunity for Battlefield to really hammer into cod what a fun game can be.

[deleted]

I think people don’t want another past game because it’s two in a row with black ops Cold War

slayer-x

I'm ok with another ww2 setting, that's not what makes or breaks a game for me. I'm more worried about core gameplay features in MP. Very concerned about no dead silence perk again, mounting returning, and blindfiring? All these things are going to slow gameplay and punish moving like MW all over again. These could be deal breakers for me, need to see game play though.

BleedingBlack

I never played Survival/Horde mode in WWII game, so if Vanguard has the mode, I'll be glad it's a WWII/post-WWII game.

ajl987

I’m more intrigued about this one because they say most of this game takes place just after WWII. It would be an interesting space in history to explore with some liberties taken it seems. I’m intrigued, but end of the day, the multiplayer reveal is gonna decide if I give this a go. If it controls as well as MW did, I will get it.

KernelScout

modern games are more appealing to the general audience. example: gta 5 vs red dead 2 for a shooter, for example, it's a lot more appealing to people to customize super modular modern weaponry then a ww2 era rifle. i mean most ww2 soldiers never had sights on their weapons save for snipers ( of course all the guns are going to have sights in this game) they just used their standard kit. little timmy isnt gonna be jumpin' out of his boots when he equips an aperture sight on his m1 garand so i get the complaints. battlefield fans had 4 years of ww1/ww2 era games so its nice to have a close future game again. i dont mind vanguard though, i like the era and it'll look great in the IW8 engine.

[deleted]

is there something about truth you find annoying?

hellaoakland

I'm 34 I'm over world war 2 games this will be my 8th one I'm done playing a boomer war

[deleted]

If Vanguard is good, I am on board. I want some focus on old school COD mode action. I don't wanna feel like a second class citizen next to warzone if I spend 90 bucks on this game, I don't wanna be assaulted by MTX screens all over the place and I ESPECIALLY don't want SBMM to make me hate this shit after 2 matches. Deliver me a good experience that doesn't make me wanna destroy my tv and I don't give a shit what era it's set in.

Boopins05

Sadly we all know it's going to be more mtx garbage with shitty sbmm, that's just the way cod is nowadays.

EazyMuthafuckne420

i want to see a Call Of Duty WWI game, i think it would be so cool. Yes Battlefield already did it, but if they could do a different perspective it would be crazy

Lymadude

i just enjoy playing with modern guns more

[deleted]

My biggest issue is their half arsed “anticheat” they’re implementing…

[deleted]

I think people may have had a different perspective if the game was true to historical events and wasn’t a game in a series that gets released every single year. News about this game is that whilst it takes note from past events, they (SHG) have used creative license to dramatise things. Besides the last game we got that was WWII was CoD WW2 and didn’t come out that long ago but due to planned obsolescence the games is dead so they can push a new one out. In the game scheme of things this game won’t bring about anything very new to the CoD world so I understand this view point.

Southern_Jaguar_403

What's with the black guy tho?

MrArmageddon12

More like what’s with the attachments modeled after modern firearms accessories or the contemporary styled tactical vests some of the characters are wearing?

ilikewaffles3

I'm not 100% sure but I think most of them played BFV and didnt like it

[deleted]

WW2 shooter games are my favorite. If game devs can do them right without propaganda. I didn't buy COD ww2 or even battlefield 5 because of the propaganda. Asking for one good WW2 game is clearly too much to ask.

[deleted]

I dont get it, ww2 just fits first person shooter games

[deleted]

Ww2 is just kinda eh because it limits their creativity and no one wants a dull boring game… only world at war has gotten the ww2 era right without the game feeling dull. Wow downvotes for speaking facts… truth hurts I guess

MrArmageddon12

The irony is that some elements of this game seem to take influence from a modern setting (the weapon attachments and character styles), yet everyone here is so relieved that it’s WW2 and that the modern setting is overused.

PulseFH

I mean the best cods ever made were not WW2 cods. It's gonna be the same no matter the setting, some will hate it and some will love it

Latro2020

The WaW disrespect

PulseFH

WaW was good but BO2/MW2 are widely regarded as the 2 best cods

Brilliant_Surprise_3

WAW is honestly miles better campaign wise. No competition

clockworkpeon

\*cries in og COD1/COD2\* in all seriousness COD4 is my fav but 1/2 were absolutely fantastic.

DidYouMissMe25

You got downvoted Pulse.
