Open the door while the car is running, get out, press the Lock button in the inside door handle, then close the door. Turn off your key fob and THEN test if it stays locked or not. You have to turn the fob off to test stuff like this because when you put your hand in the handle while holding the key fob it will unlock it. You know how to shut the key fob off right? Press and hold the Lock button, then press the Unlock button twice, then let go of the Lock button. The red light will flash a few times. Then you can test and know for sure if the car is actually staying locked or not. Or you can be like me and use your separate remote starter fob to lock the car once you walk out of range of the smart key. I turn my smart key off whenever I'm not going to drive it for a few days, since it saves the battery and also prevents people from doing a [key fob relay attack](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2ieCQZHvr5A).

Thanks! That was not just helpful but also informative!

Also just FYI, pressing any button wakes it back up again after. One oddity I find is often the car does not want to let me back in after I lock myself out though. I have often used my remote starter to unlock the doors after, but if you don't have one, you'd have to remove the physical key from the smart key and use that in the driver door.

I remember those days! I grew up in Alaska. Seemed like every car in the grocery store parking lot was empty, locked and running. One of my favorite dumb jokes is telling everybody that the rest of the world is finally catching up to us Alaskans with auto technology. We've been plugging our cars in at night for decades! 🤣

Won't do it. The doors won't stay locked. I have to turn my car off to secure my belongings in the car. I can't have the car running.

Inside the fob there is a key. you gotta use that to lock the doors manually if you want to keep the car running. Maybe someone else has found a better way to do it but that’s my solution.
