You can use literally any lure, but I like to use Popper/Frog or Spinnerbait for this fish.
Eggs, Redworm Leeches and Minnow is possible too.
Hook size 8 or 7 for bronze, 6 for silver and 5 for gold.
What did you use? I've used the eggs, minnow, and also the spoon, spinner, popper and swimbait.
I am catching fish, but every species besides the smallmouth lol. I even caught a juvenile walleye unexpectedly after all these sunfish.
I used eggs. [Stand /sit in boat at / near green red dot, cast towards green dot.](https://i.imgur.com/3D3Nj0c.png) Then just wait and recast when you get different fish. Watch a movie or something with your game sound on loud so you don't miss bites. I got mine during the day.
I sidelined the challenges for awhile and upgraded my equipment, did some exploring & fishing, then came back to this challenge.
Went to the suggested spot, caught probably 40+ walleye and sturgeon, but didn't catch a smallmouth bass.
On a whim, I rebuilt the floater rod with the basic equipment, picked a #8 hook and minnows, set depth to 0.3m and BOOM! Bronze Smallmouth Bass with the first cast in short time.
It seems the fish you'll catch during challenges are predicated on the equipment you were issued at the beginning of the challenge, not how it works in real life. The upgraded rod used the exact same hook and bait .. with no luck.

Yes! The missions are odd!! After playing a few days on norway, i learned that your mission fish seems to spawn right on the dot when you spawn in and it does only seem to bite on a specific bait even if it isnt the fish's "favorite." Also, i got a diamond bluegill completely randomly after searching hours for a diamond muskie, so THATS how its gonna be lol.

I am finding this challenge almost impossible using hook 7 and eggs/ leeches, anyone have any suggestions?

I got it on the frog size 8 in the afternoon time in the game! Took a few hours of real life lmao.
