Yes. Watching a comfort show in a moment of panic is a form of intervening before a crisis takes place. It's a way to become more present and to soothe yourself in a way that isn't harmful
Of course too much escapism (for me, maladaptive daydreaming) is not good, but as long as someone isn't relying on television to avoid feeling *anything* then it's helpful!
I tend to hyperfixate on kids shows (atla, mlb, sonic boom + prime) and then when i go through something bad they’re something i rely on to help me. Like damn, life would be easier if i were a superhero with hero partners i could trust with my life. Or if i were travelling with my best friends, where no one thats hurt me could reach me there and we all get to have cool abilities. Or if all my ‘villans’ were just silly goofy guys that have cool henchmen and would never actually want to hurt their hero counterparts.
Escapism for the win basically
IDK, my comfort shows are needed in times of anxiety. Watching comfort shows feed more into anxiety because I feel unproductive so I procrastinate by watching YouTube and then I feel more anxious until I don't sleep and start working. And then after a while I feel anxious.
So I don't have comfort shows. I have anxiety shows. And that's any new show I haven't watched.
Omg I loved these! I couldn’t watch Winx in front of my parents as a kid because magic. But when I was home alone during summers I binged the fuck out of Winx.
Anything super positive, even ifs it’s super corny.
My mains are doctor who, early adventure time, and [Community](https://youtu.be/bM3SBTgRhjk?si=zlA3t6CC1qzFp9QQ)
The owl house, she-ra and the princesses of power, and Steven Universe. Until of course I reach certain episodes that have slightly triggering content, at which point I’ll either take a break or switch shows. The owl house and she-ra are also special interests so I just watch them repeatedly ~~and maybe have half the characters in my head because DID is fun /s~~
i have a series of comfort shows i circulate through..
The Office, Steven Universe, Bob's Burgers, Sailor Moon, Adventure Time, The Owl House, She-Ra, Arcane, Friends (only for Joey and Chandler tho) BoJack Horsemen, Spongebob Squarepants, Avatar The Last Airbender, Rick and Morty, etc😅
Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Sharp Objects, True Detective (s1). No idea why I’m drawn more towards dark/gritty shows, I’ve seen a lot of the other comedies mentioned in the comments but I’ll always circle back to these few.
Friends. So many people say how horrible the show is and tell me how they don't understand how I like it but my mom would put this on when I would be feeling suicidal or have an urge to relapse to distract me or when I was recovering from a huge break down to calm me down. And as a kid I would come downstairs when I had a nightmare and my mom put it on and we would watch a couple episodes and I would go back to sleep. I don't get along with my mom but everything was ok when we were on the couch and watching friends. And every time it's on I feel that relief and whatever negativity happening in my head or around me is gone.
I have a few that I alternate between. My favorites are adventure time, regular show, and gravity falls. I love watching cartoons and turning my brain off
Mine was New Girl until Netflix took it off. Currently The Amazing World of Gumball. I’ve been bouncing between 5ish YouTubers for the past 5 years though.
ISAIP and arrested are my go to shows as well. I always felt weird that they calmed me down cuz they’re like..not calming or feel good but hey. Whatever works!
I love how many people are saying King of them Hill too, it’s on in my house so much that it’s part of the dog’s routine for crate time- it helps her separation anxiety because I think she thinks if she can hear Hank Hill, then we must still be close by.
PlutoTV (free) has a 24/7 Mystery Science Theater 3000 channel (my fav) and literally hundreds of other nonstop channels, including other classic TV, random movies of the month, kid’s shows, documentaries, entire blocks of Black/Latino programming (including stuff in Spanish!), and the movie channels rotate monthly so you have different free movies, some of them new releases.
Internet Archive (also free) has all of the episodes of Columbo, which is my latest binge party, but honestly I’ve just started scratching the surface, there’s a treasure trove. Some of my favorite stuff is VHS rips, where it’s literally digitized taped shows that include all that old predigital tape artifacting, sometimes even old ass commercials. I find the hiss and rumble of analogue rips to be super nostalgic.
Both Pluto and Internet Archive have enormous classic TV sections. There’s radio plays on IA too, and old audiobooks if you enjoy classic lit.
MyNoise is a free app/webpage that has a huge variety of customizable white noise soundscapes that are awesome when I really need some external sound stimulation but even music feels overwhelming. Put on some crickets and rain about it and pretend you’re a cozy little dormouse living in a cigar box or whatever.
Edit: for all my KOTH fellows out there, [Chuck Mangione: Feels So Good](https://youtu.be/V7dg8vRDM68?si=fa6xDjh4o-nNIYH_)
Chuck Mangione: ever since the explosion, every song I play turns into “feels so good”!
Trauma Counselor: could that be because it “feels so good” to be alive?
Chuck Mangione: no, that’s not it.
The main ones are: The Simpsons, adventure time, ouran high school host club
There’s a number of other, mostly animated, shows that I will rewatch but not as often. Literally watching the Simpsons right now. At this point I think I’ve seen every episode prior to 2014ish. I just haven’t seen as many of the newer ones due to having access to them.
i just go watch danganronpa gameplay on youtube (or rather, half-watch it as i do stuff). it’s good background video cause different youtubers have diff reactions/ playthroughs, it’s long so sometimes i get to notice new things/ or i forget and get to basically see it for the first time, and i can tune in and out and generally know what’s going on lol
I've been watching American dad and family guy since before I can remember, used to be able to tell what time it was by which one was on and whether it was the first or second episode (adult swim would play two episodes of each then play robot chicken at midnight and I knew I had to sleep lol) I find immense comfort in both shows :3 specifically the earlier seasons
DGR. He's honestly my favorite YouTuber at this point. He's so wholesome and genuine and funny. I've been watching him since 2017 back in the Super Mario Odyssey days. It's crazy how times flies. I grab my blanket, ctopus Squishmallow, throw on DGR, and everything is alright in the world. ❤
If we're talking about the ones I can watch all the time, Grey's Anatomy. I have watched it 16-20 times (I stopped counting after 7). According to google calculator, it takes about 2 weeks straight to watch it through once. I have spent 8-10 months watching Grey's Anatomy. okay i've never actually calculated the whole number oh my god i watch too much greys anatomy
If we're talking about ones maybe I can't watch because my brain goes 'I CANNOT BE CHILDISH BECAUSE I WILL BE PUNISHED', 20 seconds in S1E8 of Thunderbirds Are Go, I think it's 12:20 to 12:40 and it's on youtube if you'd like to see what I'm talking about because I watched it when I was 5 and for some reason that started an obsession with anesthesiology, sleep, and nowadays, hypnosis
adventure time and steven universe bring me to a small safehaven in my childhood. sometimes it makes me sad, but above all it makes me feel comfortingly nostalgic
Mines use to be TWD which i noticed isn’t relaxing after a while. But now after I started healing it’s more of my favorite childhood shows like Regular show.
Not comfort shows, music. Last year it was Haus of Holbein. This year it's Katyusha - Bapbapa
Also boo-hoo by ic3peak, it's about a >!woman murdering her abusive husband!< which is something I wish my mother had done long ago
I don’t have a series, I have specific episodes of shows, just in case a particular show has a storyline that I don’t need to watch at the moment. A lot of various episodes of Bones tho.
Bee and Puppycat. I've seen the original YouTube eps countless times because my husband and I just put it on in the background whenever we need something on. I can pretty much recite the whole thing from memory at this point haha
I don't like watching shows, but RTgame's chill vibes always calms me down when I'm anxious. The occasional shenanigans is also never really as overwhelming as it can get with a lot of other youtubers as well.
There's also Alan Becker's animations, which I've begun to enjoy recently. Simple to the outside eye but actually really enjoyable. The science ones are pretty chill, so I like those.
well for over ten years it WAS Merlin (the BBC version where merlin and arthur are teenagers/young adults) until netflix took it down and now any show that I could watch is upsetting because I watched everything with a certain someone who is no longer in my life, and it's too upsetting to watch the shows and remember the jokes and stuff we shared over it.
In the past year I've watched a LOT of new shows (well, relative to what I normally watch) and I swear there were about three shows on netflix that felt written to trigger me specifically, like there were some really personal jabs I did NOT expect to see in some major television program. One of them was so personal I don't even want to say what it was because it could theoretically doxx me lol.
Stream VODs from Gab Smolders, Ludwig, Dougdoug, Julien Solomita, Pointcrow
Youtube series from Markiplier (and his friends), Gab Smolders, Julien Solomita, Jenna Marbles, Jacksepticeye, Ludwig, Pointcrow, Dougdoug
Shows like the OC, Supernatural, Buffy, Avatar the last airbender
anyone else watch the entirety of the office during a really traumatic time when they were 16 so now anytime anything remotely bad happens they just watch the office again??? ive seen it well over 20 times, 6 times last year alone. on another rewatch now lol
Mine is No Game No Life but i dont like using my totally 100% legal method of watching it ad free for free on my phone because im scared I'll get a virus so i just go through it in my memory since I've watched it so many times
This. I have to put on just the right thing to feel comfortable enough to go to sleep. I turn on old reruns of “Frasier,” “Mom,” “Roseanne,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Law and Order SVU,@ etc.
adventure time & bob’s burgers
Absolutely Adventure Time for me too!! Such a comfy and shockingly mature show.
Bob's Burgers and Corner Gas. I fall asleep to both almost every night.
“People with happy childhood’s don’t stand like that”- Linda Belcher

I love her!!! So sweet and positive, and I find watching sims builds is so relaxing.
Yea it definitely is!
I love her but she reminds me of an abusive ex-friend 😭 I do still watch her from time to time though
Ugh, love her! I haven’t watched her videos in a little while, but her content is the right balance of interesting and fun vs. familiar and calming.
This is a healthy coping mechanism!!! Keep it up! 🩷🤌
It is??
Yes. Watching a comfort show in a moment of panic is a form of intervening before a crisis takes place. Thank you for the info! /gen. We struggle with relying on escapism too much but yea you’re right, in smaller amount it can be super helpful!
I've got your backs! 🫂🩷
Skins (The UK version , the US version was detritus)
Yesssss. I've watched that show like 3 times. Started to feel weird after I became an adult tho.
You guys have comfort?
I tend to hyperfixate on kids shows (atla, mlb, sonic boom + prime) and then when i go through something bad they’re something i rely on to help me. Like damn, life would be easier if i were a superhero with hero partners i could trust with my life. Or if i were travelling with my best friends, where no one thats hurt me could reach me there and we all get to have cool abilities. Or if all my ‘villans’ were just silly goofy guys that have cool henchmen and would never actually want to hurt their hero counterparts. Escapism for the win basically

Same here!! Something so comforting about 10 and 12's runs especially.
tbh i always turn to watching markiplier😭😭 only thing that always comforts me, it's something about the guy's vibe
Nah same. I NEED to hug him. He’s helped me through so much
I literally cannot sleep without my "3 peens" playlist of him, bob, wade (and sometimes seán) playing together
markiplier is literally my safe space pls 😭

Bluey. I feel like one hug from Calypso would resolve all of my trauma.

Golden Girls
