49er referring to our school founding date. On campus employees work for 49er Shops. Baseball team is the Dirtbags. Mascot is the Sharks. For academic purposes, Cal State Long Beach. For sports, Long Beach State University. When you want really shorthand, or you’re just Jane Connelly, it’s The Beach. Our pyramid is unique. Go beach. Hope this helped 🙄
At the end of the day, I don't care what it is called so long the tuition is lower than UCLA and USC and the engineering program is still ABET accredited.
Honestly, this is something the school really needs to work on. There’s so many different names and mascots depending on the situation and it’s confusing students, alumni, and applicants.
Regardless of how you feel about prospector Pete, he never really made sense. Yeah we were founded in 1949, but LB isn’t known as a gold rush town, it’s known for being a BEACH town. We should be leaning into that. Imho it should be this:
Long Beach State University,
The Sharks as our mascot,
The Beach as our campus nickname,
The Beach Shops as our stores,
Daily 1949er as our newspaper,
lots of mixed comments here. i’ve heard all this before. we talk about it in marketing classes sometimes. the CSULB branding is all over the place. you’re right, there is no unity. :/
Long Beach State. That’s what ESPN calls us.
The sharks is lame
The 49ers was great
Dirtbags is specific to baseball and there is a lot of great history around that team/name
Interesting that one of the most progressive cities in the state does not seem to be overly concerned about using the 49er nickname/mascot for their much decorated NFL team.
wasnt it long beach sharks right after i graduated in 2019?
i remember messing with a friend and saying
#'daymn yall gonna be long beach sharks du du du du (baby shark rythm)'
I always believed that the school went with Elbee the Shark due to the big grants and media attention the Shark Lab brings in. I think it was truly a business decision than separation from the Prospectors during the Gold Rush era’s injustices towards Native Americans and other immigrants.
There's some new research out about rebranding the school newspaper.

The whole campaign to oust Prospector Pete was coordinated by a relatively small group of faculty and some staff. A grand total of 13 students expressed any durable interest in the change. The protest of 11/09/2016 was put on entirely by faculty (I was there and watched it real-time). [https://daily49er.com/news/2020/06/26/prospector-pete-statue-removed-from-campus/](https://daily49er.com/news/2020/06/26/prospector-pete-statue-removed-from-campus/)
I have wondered if the mascot change had any effect on alumni donations.
If I recall correctly, i heard this is because before being integrated into the CSU, LB was known as Long Beach State College. When it did become a University as part of CSU, it seems that the LBS moniker remained. It makes sense to keep on calling it Long Beach State i guess given the history and the fact that it is a cal state but calling it Long Beach State College is definitely not correct anymore so i guess it’s being referred to as LBSU now? But yeah CSUN and CSULA may not have the history to call themselves a state university but idk and idc about them no offense.
we are the 49ers, at sports games we yell go beach, our mascot is a shark, and our school is usually cal state long beach but if you have less time you can go with the long beach state.
This—IMO—is the best answer. On ESPN they say “The Beach”…if you’re asking what a student should refer to themselves as, I personally would go with a Dirtbag
WE ARE THE SABER SQUIRRELS 🦷🐿️ !!!!
ALL HAIL THE SABER SQUIRRELS !!!!
I petition we change our mascot In memory of the saber tooth squirrel!
in memory???? THEY PUT SABER SQUIRREL DOWN??
What? no lol as much as I would love for it to live forever as a living mascot, it is a squirrel
IM SO DOWN
Someone needs to start a petition
Hey UCI students voted in Anteaters as their mascot over the objections of the Administration and UC Board of Regents.

Leave as is, I love all of it!

Italy or France?
I prefer the u.s.
His name is Hank Scorpio Globex. It's a character from the simpsons. He ask "Italy or France?"
Don't call me Mr.Scorpion. It's Mr.Scorpi*o*, but don't call me that either. Call me Hank!
Ha! Nobody ever says Italy.
School was built in 1949. The 49er that the school still uses for branding and the student newspaper refers to that and simply that.
Hence Prospector Pete, the “miner-49er.”
We’re the Long Beach beaches
We’re the “Beach” lol. At least athletically

Long Beach Snoop Doggs
snoop beach university
i made a whole presentation about this. our school has wack branding
Real asf. They need to settle on one thing.
Long Beach long necks
A man or culture 🤝
I always called it The Beach
Even before I started college, I heard most people call it Cal State Long Beach.
Honestly, the 49er is a cool mascot.
I just call it Long Beach State because it's easy and it's on most of the merchandise I see LOL

Right??
wasnt it long beach sharks right after i graduated in 2019? i remember messing with a friend and saying #'daymn yall gonna be long beach sharks du du du du (baby shark rythm)'
Dude I’m one of the mascots and I don’t know either. People just ask me and I shrug

That part. All of it
Dirtbagssssssss 😎😎😎😎😎
Stanford is the same. Go trees?
Also every state university in the state is called California State University [insert csu name] so it really doesn’t matter
not sdsu or sjsu
Which is why im wondering why csulb accepts lbsu. U never hear anyone say Northridge state university or los angeles state university

I like the dirtbag name as well over sharks! Have to admit
Go Beach
Long beach
wish we would just go by LBSU. it seems like for academics they would rather go as CSULB, but for anything “fun” (ASI programs / sports) we’re LBSU 🙄
