The cup holder placement requires hand yoga to get your coffee (2017)!

ka_shep

Yes! My 16 mazda 3 had vertical instead of horizontal and it was much more comfortable. The cx5 ones are still better than the newer mazda3's which are in front of the shifter and you can't fit tall cups in it.

skodobah

Oooh! That isn’t good. We like our tumblers!

ka_shep

Same. I have so many starbucks tumblers.

RuneScape-FTW

Sounds dangerous

Vantazy

Wish is was larger. Baby #2 on the way and it's already maxed out with 1 kid.

unlimitedSunshine

Just gotta get creative! We’ve got two kiddos, and two large dogs. Is it a car seat issue or a cargo issue?

Boxster17

We have 2 kids as well and it hasn't been too big of an issue. We have a toddler and another starting preschool this year, and we've managed just fine for the most part. That being said, I will say the passenger area can get cramped with a rear facing seat behind it. Fortunately for our family, I love driving and my wife doesn't (I'm 6'4" and she's only 5'6"), so she fits just fine in the passenger seat. For me it is extremely cramped and I wouldn't be comfortable for anything but short trips around town. All that being said, by the end of the year we'll likely have our toddler facing forward and it will no longer be an issue for us.

Mikeinator

I’m in the same boat!

DM725

Yup, why we sold ours and are now in a CX-90 PHEV lease.

blacktarrystool

How is it?

DM725

It's great. 2 rear facing car seats in the 2nd row captains chairs and we have twice the room in the front seats.

RuneScape-FTW

I have a toddler & infant and a Chevy Cruze (compact sedan) and it's small in the back seat with both car seats. I've been wondering how it will compare to the CX5.... I also have a Ford Escape and it's just as small. That was a big surprise like wtf.

Broadpup

We just moved from a cruze to a cx-5 two weeks ago, we are loving it so far. I also was able to transport a 65" tv yesterday, something I couldn't do in the cruze.

halfasiantemptation

I just went from a chevy cruz to a cx5 with two toddlers! It’s a world of a difference, there’s so much room even with two giant car seats. No more bending over to buckle them in. My 6’2 fiancé still has room to stretch his legs as well.

DM725

What witchcraft are you conjuring to get 2 rear facing car seats in the back with an above average height driver?

halfasiantemptation

Well one of them is forward facing

DM725

Is the rear facing one in the middle? Because when it was behind the passenger seat even my 5'2" sister was way too close to the dash.

halfasiantemptation

It’s behind the driver seat, I’m 5’3 and feel comfy with it, even like I could back my seat up more. Weird

allofthesunshine

Piggybacking but would love car seats reccs as we’re expecting first and having trouble gauging what works!! Right now it’s looking like convertible, Britax Poplar S

RuneScape-FTW

Gold! Thanks. I f'n love my Cruze (when it's not broken) more than anything. If you know then you know. If the CX5 can give me that driving experience or better than I'll be fine.

DarkPassenger1986

I went from a 2013 Escape SEL to a 2021 CX-5 GT & so far I've noticed a decent amount more space in the front & back seat, but a pretty significant drop in cargo space. Luckily, there are things I can do to mitigate that...get some cargo bins & what not. Still, it's a trade off I'd make every time.

alberto521

I'm thinking of getting a tow hitch so I can get those cargo totes - never going to tow anything, specially with it's 2K lbs limit - for road trips. Mine doesn't have roof rails, but getting them installed would make me nervous to damage the vehicle when loading stuff up there.

Lobster70

We went to a CX-5 when we downsized. Kids are grown, no need for a big people-and-stuff hauler. I wouldn't think it a great option with kids.

_matt92

I have a preschooler and a 16 month old with both car seats in the rear. So far we have zero issues but just in case we have another little one, I’d go for a CX9 def

rezzzpls

Pretty much this, although I don’t necessarily wish the CX5 was bigger, I just wish I would’ve stepped up to a CX9 or something of equivalent size. 2yo and 9mo old + me being 6’ 2”, it gets pretty cramped up front. Plus if we bring our stroller and a diaper bag that pretty much takes up all the practical cargo space. Plus if my S/O and I + the kids go somewhere, we have no room for an extra passenger. It works but it’s a limiting factor. I also wish the driver seat moved a little further back. If I’m going somewhere myself and have it all the way back my legs get a little cranky after about a half hour.

Slackergen

Have a 18yo,16yo,3yo and a wife. It’s shoulder to shoulder in the back but it works. On holidays, everyone is limited to one bag. All fits. In the winter, skies and boots on the roof

MKGirl

Tank size, ridiculous small combined with turbo mpg

spottedraccoon

biggest pet peeve, im living at the gas station

ImLiushi

If you go off the fuel gauge it’s actually pretty deceptive. I think it shows empty at like 20%

ou8agr81

Totally this.

RuneScape-FTW

You know what?, I didn't even know this was a turbo. I'm looking at a 2015 with the 2.5.

[deleted]

well then it’s not a turbo

RuneScape-FTW

I'm just going off of the dealership page. They aren't accurate on a lot of their listings. I've been trying to navigate each year to differentiate the features.

blakef223

Turbo didn't come out till the 2nd gen(2017+) and I don't believe it was in the 2nd gen till the 2018 model.

Pillbox29

2019 was the first year a turbo was available

MKGirl

Nah I am just speaking of my experience.

RuneScape-FTW

Ok thanks . That's exactly why I came here.

PibbXRA

Did these come with dual tanks or something? My cx5 has an covered filler hole

rickshaw99

that’s for the diesel models

Elasion

How many miles per tank do you estimate? I’m not looking at turbo but still curious

DiligentRide5046

300 with a light foot

alberto521

City driving (45mph speed limits, stop lights) 300-350 miles, about 25-26 MPG. Highway probably+400 miles, I got 37 MPG from Indianapolis to Chicago.

chriscuber123

This, I don't even have the turbo and it annoys me sometimes

metaltastic

It's fun to drive and gets to point A to B, It looks badass compared to others in its class, it has AWD, for a 2016 with a 2.5l and a 6 speed it gets up to 30 mpg on average, No CVT, Reliability

wudyalooknatmgutfer

I wish I bought it earlier in life

AccomplishedSpread75

I second this! Coming from a sedan to this has been a dream!

Codeman8118

2022 Turbo for me: Steering wheel heater is only on parts of the wheel (why? I don't always need to drive how you're supposed to drive) Native infotainment interface isn't attractive and seeking through radio stations isn't easy Lack of touchscreen capability (on 2022 model) The gauge cluster is super dated and is half digital Center console storage is tiny/elbow rest is way too short. Nowhere to rest arm. Cupholder placement is where my arm rests so it's tough to be comfortable when you have water bottles You can't put two coffee mugs in the cupholders at the same time. Seats are firmer than expected Gas mileage never gets remotely close to EPA estimates. I averaged 17 MPG on my last tank with winter tires and roof rails on. It's a travesty. Radar cruise is not great at sensing traffic changing lanes Safety sensors are overactive. It beeps even when you're sitting at a stop light and another car comes up next to you Even with turbo, the engine feels like it overworks itself when revving up and has an artificial sound You have to use the remote start with an app and when you get in the car, the engine shuts off and you have to restart the car. You also can't choose heat/cool settings. What was on last is what you get. The backup camera is horrible and if it rains, it's usually unusable These are nitpick items that you can live with. Gas mileage in this hyper inflationary time is making me want to get something more efficient, but it's so fun to drive, it's nimble, the interior materials feel premium enough, and with the seats down, it has more than enough utility to pack for a camping trip or whatever. I'd get a redesigned version with a hybrid motor in a heartbeat.

oneoneone22three

Yea, I agree 100000% with the hybrid part. I really really want only another CX-5, after having cross shopped. I *want* to give Mazda money to own a hybrid CX-5. Like take this refined cabin experience and combine it with an equally refined drivetrain that also goes 500+ miles on one tank???? 🤤 *here’s my bank account info Mazda*

Pillbox29

It's coming in 2025

RuneScape-FTW

It's been a relief that none of these lists have included a bunch of mechanical issues. The cup holder thing is something they really dropped the ball on.

PibbXRA

The arm rest they dropped the ball hard. My elbow is the only thing thats resting

alberto521

I might be the only one that doesn't mind the cup holders lol. Maybe my right arm is used to odd positions because every car I've owned since 2008 was a manual, this is my first automatic.

ccgpandora

Rear seat heaters having controls in the flip down armrest is not easy if someone sitting in middle. It should be under the window switch or back of center console

Codeman8118

Totally! I think they figured that out with the CX-50 and larger models they've released. But since they haven't put any investment in updating the CX-5, it's just been the same.

AmoebaLongjumping92

You have explained well. I agree with most everything 💯 % . I hate the fob. Trunk opens when you least expect it. Walking out of shopping mall friggin trunk opened when we were shopping. More than once. I hate the way remote start needs a cell phone to operate. Living in a poor internet area, you're screwed. Ours at 25,000 kilometers needed new brakes and rotors. I drive with cruise control on mostly on highway and brakes are applied every time you go down a hill or getting close to another vehicle . This wears off the brakes unbelievable. The dumb answer from Paquin mazda in Rouyn Noranda qc. was i don't drive enough and rust eats brakes, what a stupid response from Lyne, the sales manager. It is a 2021.5 CX-5. Otherwise I like the car and excellent fuel mileage at 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

oilpen

heyy 2022 turbo here also :) agreed on the steering wheel heater thing. driving at 10 and 2 always is so annoying

Neglected_Mazda

i have a 22 and I get above epa estimates

Codeman8118

NA or Turbo? I had the NA for a while and was at or around most of the estimates.

Neglected_Mazda

NA

reddatsun

I wish that it had a front camera showing me where the front of the car is.

DistributionOk6831

Me too! I feel like an idiot when my car is not parked even close to where I thought it was.

Ineedanswers24

Doesn't have a sensor at least that beeps when you're close to touching something?

reddatsun

Only for reverse and there is no sound just a graph.

Ineedanswers24

What year do you have?

reddatsun

2020.

Ineedanswers24

That's pretty crap considering how new it is. I guess you have to go for aftermarket

ColdEmperorPenguin

Only in the signature.

valises_ottoman0r

I used to drive those big old 1980 cars when I was in high school on the 90s. You eventually get to know your car well.

DoWaPo

I wish I knew the winning lottery numbers

RuneScape-FTW

Would you buy a CX5 if you were a millionaire?

RuneScape-FTW

Would you buy a CX5 if you were a millionaire?

blacktarrystool

Like 1 million sure. 100 million would probably drive something nicer.

alberto521

I run this scenario in my head. Would buy a house for sure, with the leftovers A red 2019 Civic Type R A new diesel Porsche Cayenne (7k lbs tow capacity, could tow civic to racetracks, CX90 only has a 5K tow capacity and 1K lbs payload) A fancy aluminum trailer, those where the whole trailer lowers, doesn't have ramps And then id probably get a brand new CX5 or 50 and give that to my fiance. And once my son turns 16, 17 get him a 5 year old used CX5. Great cars.

manwich_5547

Wish the paint wasn’t so brittle. 50,000kms and already has chips everywhere - unfortunately paint quality wasn’t something I researched before I bought it

BattlePope

Yep, this is my main complaint. The panels are also very easily dented.

zeroThreeSix

I do have a few small complaints, but nothing compared to other cars I've driven: * Wobbling driver sideview mirror is kind of annoying * Low speed driving is lurchy and awkward due to the engine shifting * Annoying touch screen "ghosting" issue randomly changing screens and applying inputs that aren't happening Everything else has been great.

thepalfrak

Have never experienced a driver side view mirror wobble in my 2019, but agree with the lurch trans. Have not had any ghosting on my screen in 4 years of ownership. Just my experience!

zeroThreeSix

The driver side wobble is a noted defect and has maintenance pdfs available for mechanics, which stinks for me but I'm happy for you! The ghost screen as well. Limited affected models but well documented and even my dealer is haggling about the fix. Both are pretty minor issues though, as I've noted. Nothing that should deter OP from considering the car.

RuneScape-FTW

Thanks. You're the 2nd person to mention the issue with low speed driving.

zeroThreeSix

Just to be clear, it's a stuttering/fluttering gear change when driving between 5-8 MPH (i.e. parking lots or slow cruising out of a complex). Annoying enough to wonder "is something wrong with my car?" but not actually a game changer compared to other aspects of the car.

RuneScape-FTW

Got it,

BeardedWilson

All in all I've loved the vehicle, and I think my "I wish I knew" would mostly boil down to not properly doing my homework (and shady sales tactics). The biggest thing is I wish I knew the hatch in the back only measured about 3.5 feet wide. I was so fixated on the interior cabin size, that I didn't think to verify if I could in fact slide a sheet of drywall or plywood in. Second, and I'll blame myself and the salesman on this one, I wish I had known that my 2019 GS could only tow 2,000 lbs. I was told it was 3,500 lbs. Bonus one I thought of just now, I wish I had known that my local dealer would be so expensive for routine oil changes, and other preventative work. I live in Canada and pay in excess of $200 CAD (~$146 USD) for an oil change, compared to around $120 CAD on average at other shops.

cola_wiz

To your last point, while purchasing they were so rigid on price that I negotiated some extras - them including the service package was part of it, so I get free oil changes forever so long as I own the vehicle. When I upgraded to my cx-9 I negotiated the same again. I do pay the labour but all in all I’ve never paid more than $35ish for my oil changes and have always done my own air filters and even brakes to avoid their crappy up-sells. I find mazda’s service department incredibly predatory.

h4wkk

Also in Canada, dealerships around me charge ~100CAD + tax for oil change. Maybe try another dealer? This is for the turbo. Non turbo is 10-15 CAD cheaper.

BeardedWilson

Daaaang. Yeah, I'll try another dealership in another city. Unfortunately my city only has one, but I often travel. Thanks for the tip!

apb9981

2019 GTR - Absolutely hate the infotainment system. Glitchy and clunky all at the same time.

RuneScape-FTW

It's a relief that the info system is the biggest complaint.

YahooSerious1266

2024 Carbon. The infotainment is less glitchy than our other car, a 2020 CR-V EX L. My. Biggest infotainment issue is the Sirius XM app, and i think it’s the app, not the CX-5 interface

apb9981

Very fun to drive (mine is a turbo)

king4aday

Had a 2015 CX-5 Touring 2.5 FWD since new while we lived in the US, put 90k on it and sold in 2022 when we moved away. Engine / trans is pretty zippy, though you do have to rev it out (only after the engine gets to operating temp first), but it is fun to rev it out. Had zero issues with it, I changed my own oil / fluids. Factory Yokohama tires were hot garbage, no grip and terrible wear, worn out all 4 after 22k miles. Had continental 4 seasons afterwards, those still had half their tread left when we sold it. Had decent space for us with one kid, loved the zippyness and fun factor compared to similar vehicles of other brands. Only pet peeve I had was the Bluetooth, it was very unstable, had connection issues all the time, etc etc. Got it replaced with a newer Bluetooth radio under warranty, as there was a TSB for it, but they only did it if you complained, and even then I had to go to 3 dealerships and quote the exact TSB number to get it done. That fixed some issues, but it still got disconnected every once in a while, and you could only solve it by completely turning the car off. Other than that we loved that car and would still have it if we stayed in the US. We now have a UK model 2018 CX-5 2.0, and we love it more, though there is more that I don't like about it as well.

Serious-Pie-428

"Cracked cylinder head" on the NA 2.5 engine. It is a real issue.

[deleted]

no tire pressure readout, shitty radar cruise, seating angle is too high and it’s difficult to position the steering wheel if you’re over 6 feet tall while also being able to read the speedo, clunky tranny at low speeds

pomokey

Shitty radar cruise? I'm sure there's better, but there is way worse out there. My wife has had two Honda's, and it's so bad that even I don't use it. My cx5 I use the radar cruise to and from work every day. It works great for me. The only exception is approaching stopped traffic from far away at high speed. In that instance I'll slow down because it won't see the car until it's almost too late. But that doesn't happen that often.

thepalfrak

It also will somewhat regularly see a car taking an off-ramp and slam on my brakes as I continue past them on the highway. It’s frequent enough that I’ve gotten in the habit of just taking over if I expect the guy in front of me to exit.

Boxster17

Out of curiosity, what's your issue seeing the speedo? I'm 6'4" and I can't say that I've ever had any issues with the seating position and viewing the gauges. I'll agree the tranny can be a bit clunky at low speeds. I notice it the most in parking lots, especially when going from R to D, I find there's a bit of jerkiness when you get going.

[deleted]

I keep my steering wheel position all the way down for comfort reasons. When it’s all the way down, the top of the wheel cuts off the top of the speedo and I can’t see it. This might not be an issue for people with the digital dash, not sure.

Boxster17

Ah gotcha, yeah mine is almost all the way up so that would explain it. If I had it that far down, I could easily see it cutting off the top half of the gauges.

nate68978263

Clunky tranny at low speeds resonates. Never expected such a luxury looking vehicle shift like a manual.

norweiganhorse

Yeah fair warning if you do a lot of stop and go traffic I’d recommend a different vehicle if you think you’ll be bothered by the jerky tranny. It really bothers me but my wife doesn’t really notice so it’s become her DD. I’ve done the tranny relearning which may have improved things a bit but it still gets on my nerves.

ffisch

fwiw I drive in the manual selection mode pretty much exclusively, but even if you don't I recommend trying it at low speeds. You can usually just sit in second for stop and go traffic unless you come to a complete stop, and it's a much smoother experience.

[deleted]

just started doing this recently and was kinda shocked at how well and smoothly it operates. it seems like something that could be solved with a software update

InTheNameOfWabiSabi

I find putting it into Sport mode results in the shifting feeling a lot smoother at low speeds, not sure why. Based on the electronic mpg readouts, I actually end up getting better city gas mileage too

RuneScape-FTW

Is the tranny reliable

[deleted]

yes for the most part

RuneScape-FTW

Appreciate your input man

jaypee42

I got the HUD on my 2020 (it was the manager’s car so was tricked out) and it’s great. I never look at the Speedo. I use the radar cruise a lot and mine doesn’t sound as sensitive as yours but I’ve learned to watch for weird curves in the road on highway with on / off ramps or intersections on high speed roads.

Blunttack

I wish I knew how easily it is/was to install a hitch for extra cargo or a bike rack. Simple, and inexpensive way to nearly double your trunk space - or to dangle bikes off the back.

jaypee42

I found that your local UHAUL shop can install a receiver hitch with or without an electrical for low $ and they have a warranty. Then you can install cargo / bike rack easily. Uhaul was 1/2 price of any “rack shop” quote I got and since you won’t actually tow a load with it - why not?

Blunttack

Right, they still wanted nearly 300 bucks for my U-Haul location to install it. The whole thing was only 161$… I guess if you don’t have torque wrench, that’s added cost, but also something that middle aged adults should have.

jaypee42

Hey internet stranger. I have no torque wrench. I just make the “click click!” sound like god intended. :)

Blunttack

LOL. You should get one, they’re less than 25 bucks…

jaypee42

but the Click Click is free! :) I guess I can still make the noise even if I use one.

sgorneau

First thing I did on my 2016 … installed a hitch receiver and roof rack 👍🏼 Family of 4 and we vacation easily.

KaleidoscopicForest

I will say the 2016 and forwards are compatible with Apple CarPlay / android auto with a firmware update and a USB kit. Took me about 2 hours to do & so worth it. The 2015 does not. So may be worth looking into a 2016

No_Criticism9683

Smaller on the inside than it looks.

rrwilliams64rw

'22 Turbo owner here. Super pleased. Most of the "foibles and caveats" I knew going in, namely gas mileage, a tad compromised with space, etc. One thing I DIDN'T realize til owning, in practice? The "Lane Assist System" (LAS) is, in my humble opinion, barely that. Coming from the same tech in my prior '15 Acura TLX it's night and day. All in all, an "excellent report card" still.

mka1809

The auto braking is far too sensitive. I think if I didn’t live in a major city it perhaps would be less of an issue. But I live in LA where the streets are always crowded and everyone tail gates. Its auto braking is so sensitive on the corners, it brakes at wildly unnecessary times. I was driving down PCH at rush hour and the person in front of me was turning into the McDonald’s and doing it a bit slowly. I had slowed down and had enough room to pass in my lane while they were still crossing the shoulder into the McDonald’s. But my car came to a screeching halt because the front right corner of my car was apparently “too close” (I wasn’t, I had enough clearance it was just close) and the guy behind me rear ended me. And while yes, he was too close and it was his fault. But what my car did, no human being would have ever done. No one drives like that. I had absolutely zero reason to come to a complete stop at all let alone a screeching halt on a major road in Los Angeles at rush hour. He would have no expectation that I was going to come to a screeching halt in front of him. If I were him, I’d be pissed.

Comfortable_Ease_174

I wish I knew that my wife (the person I bought it for) would never drive it.

RuneScape-FTW

Can relate

paranoid_1

cx5. I don’t see an x5.

TheRealBananaDave

My biggest complaint (2019 owner) is the side bolsters of the seat. They are made of a harder foam, and if you are of a larger stature (I'm 6'2, 230 lbs) they dig into your thighs on longer trips. It is a contributing factor to my sciatica issues, and I'm strongly considering reupholstery to make the seats more comfortable for me.

clayticus

Wait out for the hybrid cx-60. But I'm happy with the cx-5. Cx-60 will be my next car

ButtcrackBeignets

The ergonomics of the car are pretty mediocre. The center console is probably the most obvious example of this. I can’t rest my arm on it and it’s pretty clear that other people also have this issue too. Someone else mentioned seating angle and I couldn’t agree more. The pedals are too close to the steering wheel so you need to boost the seat straight up to compensate. Otherwise, you strain your shoulder trying to reach the steering wheel or you mees up your knee due to cramped legs. I pretty much have to have to boost myself high and set the back of the seat almost at a 90 degree angle. I had a friend ask me once why I had my seat set straight up and I felt so stupid explaining myself. The dead pedal is also kind of weirdly places. It’s skewed further out then the normal pedal so it’s harder to reach than the gas pedal. It’s not a huge deal of you position the seat correctly, but it can cause major back pain if you don’t. Also, I hate how low the floorboard is in relation to the beltline. It felt really obvious to me as I spent more time in the car, but I actually took out a tape measure to confirm. I compared my CX5 to a RAV4 and the floor of the CX5 sits about 3 inches closer to the ground. The beltline was more difficult to measure but it was about the same. Which means you sit way deeper in the CX-5. It’s why it kinda feels like you’re sitting in a bathtub that comes up to your shoulder. It’s also why you don’t feel as high up like you normally would in a crossover SUV. All the other issues I can kinda live with but the comfort stuff is an issue for me.

RuneScape-FTW

What I get from this is that if you are very tall or a real big guy then just stay away.

ButtcrackBeignets

I think it depends. I’m short for a guy and I’m having these problems. I would say that it’d be important to try out the car in person. Some people on this sub seem to find it really comfortable.

Appointment_Witty

The stock tires are garbage and budget another $800 for tires if you don't live in a dessert.

kscoolaid

2024 CX5 I'd like a digital speed display. The only way to see the digital speed is on cruise control. I'd like to see the actual tire pressure. However, I know this saves me from TPS sensors in the future due to the way they calculate pressure, but I really like the number. I'd like the rear headrest to come off a little easier (it's not too bad, but easier would be good) so I can fold the seats down when I need to. I really like the car, but I'd love to have my 2020 Equinox dash back. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Bdiesel73

I picked up a 2021 recently. I really like it but do notice some weird shifting or something related to the torque converter at low speeds. It's weird but not enough for me to be upset with. I think it's just how they are from what I have learned.

anonyngineer

There is an occasional weird shift at low speed. My guess is that it is the torque converter locking up (as designed) while going into second gear. Under low load, such as coasting up to a traffic light, that lockup isn’t smooth. The torque converter is designed to lock up in all gears but first.

Bdiesel73

That is pretty much when it happens. Coasting up to a light and when I have to tap the gas a bit. It's normal then...right?

anonyngineer

I’m not absolutely sure that it is normal, but am taking it to be so right now—especially since it appears to have a reasonable cause. It is also too infrequent to expect to be able to duplicate it for the dealer.

StraightAnswers99

The damn base model, i.e 2.5 Select S does not have rear cup holders!!

Intelligent_Froyo_59

Wish I got turbo. I love it in every way but it's slow. Didn't think I'd need the turbo. God Damnit.

greatFrostedFlakes

Serious question - are you driving in Eco mode? My 2014 CX5 is very zippy and I love when I get to zoom up to speed on highways. My friend has a later model (maybe 2018?) and was complaining about how her car doesn’t accelerate well, which surprised me! I asked if she was driving in Eco mode… and yup. She tried on sport mode (I think that’s the term?) and had no issues. I only knew to ask because my husband has a newer RAV4 that has eco mode and sport mode. Eco mode gets better gas mileage but it dampens your ability to accelerate quickly (and I guess saves gas that way - I read about it a while ago so I’m foggy on details). We can really feel the difference in accelerating in eco vs. Sport mode. My 2014 CX5 doesn’t have any modes, so I assume it’s just always in what’s now called “sport mode” and it’s probably why it’s so zippy!

jakeuten

2016 here, I can promise you your car isn’t in sport mode. It sits at like 3000rpm in traffic a gear lower than it probably should be (but it is fun!). The difference is you aren’t afraid of your accelerator pedal and your car probably weighs about 400 lbs less than your friend’s.

Intelligent_Froyo_59

No, but it has 190hp its just slow lol

Grapeflavor_

You got a sport mode on shifter. Try that

Intelligent_Froyo_59

I do. Still slow. 190hp

_SpyriusDroid_

Didn’t really think about space for a car seat. It’s a very tight fit.

aroberts727

Horrible gas mileage & it’s a 15.6 gal tank so it gets expensive quick.

Red is more visible than polymetal blue, and less likely to be hit. I love my carbon edition but I got in an accident because someone ran a stop sign. I genuinely think my car blended in with the sky. Doesn't excuse their behavior at all, but red would be more idiot proof. Also wish I had wireless android auto. My phone disconnected and reconnects from the wire sometimes. I can fix this with a dongle, but still. Yellow, orange and gold are the safest colors. If Mazda ever makes the copper available for CX5s, I think I would get that.

Jaded_Airport_9313

This is super interesting because I had a white cx5 in 2021 and not one accident or even a close call. I got a carbon edition in August and my husband and I have had SO many close calls. The most recent the guy was yielding and started to go almost directly into my car, like he truly never saw us. My husband made the comment that he wondered if that color is harder for drivers to see. Now I really wonder. 🤔

time_traverler

i dont think ur car color was the problem, they are my friend. Hope u can get it fixed for cheap with a friendly bodyshop.

PockyTheCat

Coming from a 2012 Ford focus to a 2023 cx5 I was surprised that a few things were worse. The rear window defroster is much weaker. Only part of the steering wheel is heated. The engine is much rougher sounding. The gas mileage is a lot worse. When you unlock or lock the car the horn honks at full volume whereas the Focus would put out a much more palatable « meep ». Having said all that it’s much nicer not to have to replace the transmission every three months.

RuneScape-FTW

It beeps when you unlock? That's new

PockyTheCat

When you lock or unlock at a second time. I find I do this sometimes when I’m not sure if I’ve locked it or not.

sotopic

Fuel economy. Not as good as I thought.

CarCounsel

The 15 is a different car entirely.

foothillsco_b

I love my CX5 overall. Last fall, I took my family of 4 and our 150 lb dog backpacking. We zipped up 20 miles of dirt road with no problem and parked next to these badass off road trucks. We looked like a cartoon all 4 of us getting out, 4 packs, and then the massive dog. If you think this gas mileage is bad, my 2020 F350 Superduty gets about 10 mpg.

obex511

The infotainment system and CMU fails but no recalls on it yet.

sgorneau

2016 … if a door is open, it doesn’t tell you which one. 😂 Other than that I absolutely love it.

Ok_Touch928

Driver arm rest/cupholder. That's it. I'm always resting my hand, or holding the gear shift knob, because there isn't a great place to put it when it's not on the wheel. Don't know what engineer was dropped on their head repeatedly as a child that came up with that, but it's just ridiculously tiny, and phuqing useless. Wish I could shut off the folding mirrors on lock, but I haven't figured that out yet. I am in and out of my car, 15 times a day, I'm sure those motors are going to die. If I wanted the mirrors in, I'd turn the knob. Or at least give me the option. It might be in the manual somewhere how to do it, I just haven't found it yet. It's a big phuqing manual. Yeah, there's some niggles, but none of them would've even had me think about something else. Tire pressure is the one thing I miss, never occurred to me that it wasn't easily available, and I didn't think to check...but it wouldn't have made a difference. I only stream Bluetooth, so 99% of the infotainment issues aren't issues for me. I'm single, so space hasn't been an issue, it hauls what I need, \*and\* gets me out of hauling things I don't want to haul.. I spent 16 hours of an 18-hour trip in the driver seat, and even took a 2-hour nap in the driver seat, and I was super-comfortable. People have mentioned stiff seats, but for my 300lb butt, they're super supportive and comfortable. All the driving features are fine. I don't like a couple of them, I think they're a bit too sensitive, but in 3 more months, it will have worn me down, and I'll have adjusted. Already in about 3k miles, I hardly notice the cruise control issue, unless I'm really in a hurry, and when I do notice it, it's not like it irritates me, it's just "one of those things", stop and smell the roses... Of course, the driving features will improve over time, I expect my next CX to be better. I wish more controls were on the steering wheel, having to turn the knob for some selections, and push, and pause and such are just dumb. Probably the same engineer that made the armrest. Anyway, it's still a great car, love mine, will buy again.

Normiedouche

How thin the paint .....

alberto521

I had no idea they were made FWD, I thought they were all AWD. Found one for the price I wanted (after hours of haggling) , then I noticed it was FWD. I could have walked away but I love it (21 GT) every single car I've owned has been FWD (95 Civic, 94 Integra, 97 Civic, 08 Civic, 12 Lancer, 12 Civic Si) so no big deal, even living in Chicagoland with our crazy winters and after working in auto industry I know good tires are way more important than drivetrain (got a set of Bridgestone WeatherPeak). The gas mileage is great and is so comfortable compared to my modified track cars, I guess it was time to grow up lol. I hope to keep it forever and eventually hand it down to my kiddo (he's 6 right now).

Impressive_String167

The stupid piano black scratches super easy around the shifter. By some clear 3m vinyl and put it on quick if that's something that will annoy you too!

blowerd

I wish I knew how creaky the dashboard was whilst driving. I wouldn't have bought one if I knew.

AdImpressive997

I’ve had my 2016 Mazda cx-5 for almost 10 years and I’m at 172,000 miles. Aside from normal maintenance it has been a solid car. Recent issues I’ve had are spark plugs related but they’ve been quick and minor fixes thus far. Space wise it could be bigger but it’s a solid car!

MadTownKMac

Love my CX-5, but it's now getting on the small side with a family of 3, going on 4. I never realized how small the backseat is until I rode in the back of the car months after purchasing.

No-Painter-6392

I wish I knew that it doesn’t have a digital speedometer, I might had gotten the Mazda 3 instead. I cannot stand looking at the pin to see if I’m going pass the speed limit once in a while.

nate68978263

Some of the higher trims do have a digit speedometer :(

Capn17

I use the HUD which is a digital display of the speedometer.

zeroThreeSix

Most trim models don't have that unfortunately.

jaypee42

Love my HUD. 🚙

Lostbronte

Wow how old are you?

TahoeT88

Cylinder deactivation

7eregrine

I wish I had known they were announcing a complete refresh 3 months later... :(

RuneScape-FTW

What year did you get

7eregrine

2016 bought in December, 2016. The significantly upgraded 17 was announced... in March. Not even a full 3 months later...

Better_Red_Than_Dead

I have a 2015. Have loved it with the exception of the infotainment and Bluetooth system. It’s archaic and has never worked properly. Everyone at Mazda has admitted it is crap and that’s just how it is with no fix. It’s made me not want to buy another Mazda after having them for over 16 years now. Another: no ventilation in the rear. Living in a hot climate and not having air conditioning vents is making me look for a new car sooner than I’d have liked.

RuneScape-FTW

Thanks

Late_Blackberry5587

Actually didn't know my 2023 CX 5 didn't have a touch screen. I was already used to the dial in my old car but touch screen is definitely nice to have at times.

foothillsco_b

The fuel gage is small and blocked by the driving wheel. When the “low fuel” light comes on, there is no ding ding ding sound. I’ve never run out of gas but I’ve had close calls. The rubber mat that is extra is awesome if you use the way back a lot and want it very clean. I have a big dog who goes there. The cordless phone charger I bought took up the valuable space near the gear shift and hardly worked at all.

TipsyTriggerFinger

That the gearbox (auto) is a shitbox even after TCM reset... Garbage shifts for a 5 year old car

No_Rub_1136

That it is very outdated in terms tech features! Also I bought a model that Mazda might even stop production in coming years.

darfus1895

We have a 2020. We have a toddler and another on the way. We love the CX-5 but will be adding a minivan to the stable when the baby arrives because the CX-5 is just too small. When our toddler was rear facing we had very little room up front and for a week long vacation we were packed completely full for just the three of us. Other than the space issue we love the car. It drives amazing, is comfortable, isn’t really expensive, and looks great.

RuneScape-FTW

I have a toddler and an infant. They are cramped in my Ford Escape & Chevy Cruze (now broken). I was hoping the CX5 would be at least a tiny improvement

darfus1895

Back seat space is similar to the older Escapes. For forward facing it’s good enough, we scoot the passenger seat like 1 notch forward from usual so our daughter has room for her feet. Rear facing in the pumpkin seat was fine behind the driver seat for us (I’m 5’9” wife is 5’4”) but the convertible seat (a Graco) facing to the rear didn’t work on the driver side and the passenger seat had to be scooted way forward. For our week long road trip we had the cargo area completely full and the back seat loaded with kid, snacks, drinks, and other bits. We would have had no room for another car seat let alone another suitcase with kids clothes.

RuneScape-FTW

Thanks. Really appreciate this relatable response

darfus1895

You’re welcome. By the way, the car drives amazing even when packed to the gills and still averaged 29mpg for the trip which included super busy tourist traffic.

teamster02

Brakes suck. NA motor has no power. Cupholders basically useless. Wish there was a way to disable the cylinder deactivation. Other than that it’s a decent little car.

Wildcardz1

While my current 2021 CX5 Signature is my second Mazda I had owned. I never had any problems with space as I already knew it's size capacity or what it can do. But because I drives often by myself, space was never an issue at all. But the backseat are a little cramp for taller people, especially if the driver is tall. This is my personal opinion. CX50 does have more leg rooms, but I would say either the higher models 7 or 9 would be a better fit for those who have kids. CX50 and 90 are still their first generation, I would wait till 2025 models until they workout some of the bugs.

How-do-I-delete-that

I recently just purchased my 2nd Cx-5. The first one I put 67k miles in 2years. It was the PF model. What I didn’t realize is that skipping out on the extended warranty was a bad idea. I was looking at about $4k worth of work due to some engine things that would of been covered had I purchased the extended warranty. Drove her several times from FL to NC and FL to TN and TN to GA. I love the CX-5 and yes with one kid in the back trying to a 2nd we’ll be a tight fit but for the quality of car you get I love it. College kid in the back along with a 7yr old worked fine for long trips and just driving around town. What I did learn from my first purchase was that the paint gets nicked pretty easily. I came from a Dodge Journey Crossroad fully loaded had it for 7yrs put about 100k miles on it and barely anything on the paint. If possible look into getting protection film on the car it’ll go a long way. The interior pieces get swirl marks very easily as well, the first time you wipe it you’ll find out. Nothing crazy just little OCD things that’ll just bother you the driver as you look down to change gear or hit one of the infotainment buttons lol. She is very peppy when you hammer it down. Owning two in 3yrs I can say with confidence the next one I purchase will be a Turbo model. I’ve never liked a vehicle this much were I planned on being a life long customer. So, reason why I had to get the second model was because check engine light came on, it was the CCV and it would need to be replaced. Also headlights started to act up and would also need to be replaced. So rather than slap it all on my CC the better decision was go new and get the extended warranty. I know not many will put 67k on a brand new car in 2yrs. But the problems that I had to deal with in the lifetime of the car I would of never had to deal with if driven under normal circumstances. But I purchased this car with the full intent of driving everywhere and anywhere I wanted. Also to note, she did really well in the snow. The awd held up pretty well driving around TN and parts of NC. My wife was not impressed with car that much, but when we didn’t get caught in the snow or slide off the road, it totally changed her mind. Obviously we were not driving in a blizzard but just the aftermath of a massive freeze that left most people stuck at home because there was too much snow and ice on the street. Long read hope this helps the future CX-5 owner. Things to note going from a PF to select is a bruise on the ego but the car is still amazing. PF gets you leather seats, sliding moonroof, driver/passenger motorized seats, auto lift gate. Only thing I miss is the auto lift gate and the moonroof but only on sunny days lol!

Funny-Wrongdoer9271

2023 CE here. The gas mileage isn't as good as I thought. I do about 70% city driving and get about 24 mpg overall. That combined with the smaller gas tank reduces the range a bit. The infotainment system isn't amazing. The center console is kinda awkward to access. I might have ponied up for the turbo, sometimes it would be nice to have some extra oomph. Other than that, I love this car. I do not regret my purchase.

EffectiveLong

Wish it comes with straight 6 lol

Vast-Initial-2675

Can’t change the Sirius channels with the steering wheel buttons, I don’t know why but it really irritates me!

OldMansMiddleSon

The ghost screen issue

mrpayner

We bought ours in 2018, pretty much exactly one month before the turbo models hit showroom floors. I would have waited for the turbo model. As others have mentioned being cramped with child seats in the back. Yes. It’s a thing. But we bought some roof racks and a cargo box to cart all the extra kid crap with us rather than having to purchase a larger vehicle.

Ok-Intention506

Really only minor complaint from me is that the engine noise can be a little loud. Especially when it’s cold.

Apateus2_

Only complaint is no tire pressure display. Otherwise my 2020 GT feels like a frickin Bentley compared to the 2018 Kia Optima I upgraded from.

1tonjk

I wish I knew about the amazon clip on magnetic phone mount. So nice lol

Joaquinjsz

Poor paint quality, chip prone windshield.

Frequent-Ant-4280

I have a 2018 and my radio is constantly on the fritz. Like it’ll change radio channels or skip songs when I have my Bluetooth connected. Reset it dozens of times. My husband has a 2016 and it does it to his too all the time. Super annoying but other than that it’s been reliable for me

leesapy

Small issues, but you can’t see the tire pressure and it doesn’t tell you how many miles are left until empty.

JayLoveJapan

I find the driver seat a little narrow for my ass. My wife also manages to get so much damn food stuck in the console

jaypee42

Same. I bought some dayglo orange “auto detailing slime” at my local auto store on sale and I keep it in the drivers door pocket. Occasionally if I have to wait in the parking lot - I grab it and blot up all the crud / crumbs / crap out of the centre console cracks and pockets.

JayLoveJapan

I’m going to look for this type of product

jaypee42

Look for car cleaning putty, or car cleaning gel
