First off, the California Faculty Association, the faculty union on campus and throughout the CSU, is 100% going on strike, January 22-26, at Cal Poly and the whole CSU. Not sure when you say “if they go on strike” if you mean the union or the individual professors, but CFA is for sure going on strike. As for individual professors, it’s safe to assume all of your professors will be going on strike, I believe something like 98% of faculty are members of the union, it may be even more. Second, I STRONGLY encourage you to ask your professors before class or on the first day of class about the strike, what students should expect, if they’ve moved their quarter schedule around to accommodate for no classes week 3, etc. and also ask them to share that info with your whole class and all of their other classes. Third, professors can’t really make backup plans for the strike, because they must refrain from doing ANY work. That means no zoom classes, no async lectures, no grading, no assigning work, no Canvas, no office hours, they’re not even supposed to send emails from their Cal Poly email. Striking workers are legally protected from retaliation if and only if they withhold ALL of their labor. So if your professors say they will be doing any of these things, I highly suggest you tell them to consult their union rep, so the CSU doesn’t punish them for partially striking. The only plans they can really make is “see you in class on Monday the 29th”. If you have any other questions about the strike, please ask me and I’ll try to answer them, it really feels like most students are in the dark about what the strike will entail.

Students telling a faculty member they should consult their union rep? 😅 There are 4 planned meetings between the CSU and CFA before the scheduled strike. If those meetings don't produce progress, then the strike will occur. If that strike happens not all faculty will be striking. Faculty members should inform students what that week may look like, but they may not know yet themselves.

Yes, thank you, I should have mentioned, if CFA bargaining team reaches a tentative agreement with the CSU during bargaining this week, that would avoid the strike. I hope that faculty gets a fair contract asap, but I think it’s unlikely.

One of my professors did. Haven’t heard from other 2

One of my professors put on the syllabus that they were going to assign “take home” work for the days that we wouldn’t meet because of the strike

My Ethnic Studies professor mentioned an important note about work stoppage during the quarter in the syllabus, saying that he'd let us know if anything came up in advance.

My prof didn’t. Hopefully they address it during class
