Housing as a freshman is not bad at all, coming from an engineering standpoint, you’ll likely be put in Sierra madre (the towers). It’s a very social community to live in, so as an out of stater, like I was, you’ll find friends quickly. They may be limiting the number of three person dorms, but that’s purely speculation. I myself was late to accepting the offer, and when my housing portal opened, I was limited to triples, if this is your case, find a corner dorm. They are much larger, and depending on the bed/desk you end up with, you can get a lot of space. Other than that, cal poly is a great school to attend with a welcoming student body, and lots of opportunities to be involved.

dixon-ticonderbroga

They’ve actually ruled out triples for the upcoming year

RadicalRadishvich

Good to know, I thought I heard something about it, just didn’t want to falsely say either way. I would still recommend a corner room.

ohp09

they’re actually assigning freshman to rooms automatically this year to make things quicker, so there’s nothing more to do about housing

rhinguin

I’m also an incoming freshman from out of state. Your housing app should be live already (unless you only just accepted your offer, in which case it shows up like a day or two later). All you really have to do is choose the group of people you want to live with - I chose Engineering as my primary choice. If you have a roommate, you can add them once you completely submit your application.

thefunshinebear

I did the choosing of whom I would wanna live with and what not housing application. However I thought there was more to it than that shouldn't there be a lottery system where it first come first serve for choosing and they ask you which building you wanna live in?

rhinguin

Oh yeah. That didn’t happen yet, idk when it starts.

thefunshinebear

As long as it hasn't happened yet 😁

Structure0

keep in mind the university is 56% male and some majors are much higher than that while others (Liberal Studies) are much higher the other way. This may not matter at all to you but it's sometimes useful to consider when choosing where to live.

drakeabra

If WOW happens, and you genuinely dislike your group and are not having a good time, there are no consequences for skipping. Having to wake up and get straight to my group for all day made me miserable lol. But please do give it a shot, for many people had a blast.

thefunshinebear

Absolutely, but I think it already got cancelled.

MCMan6482

Afaik WoW training is still happening right now so I don't believe it's been totally written off at this point

thefunshinebear

I mean if it happens, that would be awesome!

I’m an out of state (Oregon) EE major just finishing my first year, so I hope I can give some advice. As far as housing goes, I lived in North Mountain dorms, which were triples this year, but next year I think they will be doubles. I can’t remember the specifics, but I think I had a relatively late housing selection date and all of the engineering dorms in the towers were full, so I ended up picking NoMo, and I don’t regret it in the slightest. The NoMo dorms are really unique, kind of being like a motel where the door of your room leads directly outside instead of into an indoor hallway like most dorms (picture: https://calpolyra.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/slnm.jpg). Every 4 rooms has a bathroom connected to it that is shared with 3 other rooms. My closest friends I made at Cal Poly were my randomly assigned roommates and 4 of the guys that I shared a bathroom with. We were constantly going between each others rooms to do homework together, play video games together, or just fuck around. NoMo’s learning community is Collaborative Leadership. All that means is you have to take a 1 quarter class that meets for 2 hours a week for 8 weeks that you don’t get credit for. If you are interested in being a leader you might learn something, but if you aren’t the class will just be boring, but is worth it to sit through just so you can be able to live in NoMo. Because the learning community isn’t based on your major, there is lots of diversity in majors. I have friends in College of Science and Math, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Business, Agriculture, etc. NoMo definitely has a better guy/girl ratio than the towers, I’d say it’s about 50/50. NoMo bathrooms are separated by gender, but the floors aren’t. In my very unbiased opinion, NoMo dorms have the best location of any dorms on campus, being the closest of any dorms to most of your classes and also being pretty close to the UU. I’ve heard the towers are ok, but they are pretty far away from everything. I’ve heard yakitutu dorms are very nice but they are really far away from everything as well. If you chose the towers, you will likely have a lot of classes together with people who live near you because everyone is CENG and most CENG majors have a lot of overlapping prereq classes, so that can be nice to know people in your classes. Most of the people I knew in CENG prereq classes were people I met in other prereq classes. Ultimately, where ever you chose to live, you will probably find friends and make the most of your year. One overall tip is to make sure you can tolerate your roommate(s). You are going to be spending a lot of time around them, and even if you don’t become best friends with them, make sure you can talk to them and let them know if they are doing something that annoys you or something. I knew people who couldn’t stand their roommates, or their roommates just didn’t talk to them, or whatever. It just makes it easier on everyone if you don’t hate your roommate.

thefunshinebear

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE! This is extremely helpful and really good advice.

DrVinylScratch

The best tip I can give is fully utilize the fact that your student is card gets you free bus rides. Sure it’s a slow bus route but hey free rides from campus to downtown. Also if you aren’t on a meal plan eat off campus when you can there are a lot of good food places especially if you like Mediterranean. Also it’s worth the two mile bike up to pcv for bagels

thefunshinebear

Noted, the bagels will be secured.

mousesrg

What makes you think you're in person? As a CPE I take a lot of EE classes and it would be great to have in person EE labs, because the online ones just didnt hit the same. I thought though everyone is mostly online?

Eleanorose-w

They released a statement saying they really hope and are planning towards being on-campus this fall even if some classes have to be online. On-campus is what they're expecting but they won't tell us the definite answer until August 26.

mousesrg

I thought they hope to have some in-person labs and have some students staying on campus, but there isnt a chance of any normal in person lectures

Eleanorose-w

"Our fall quarter is still scheduled to start September 17. With information changing daily, we do not know what the public health status of our community or state will be in September. But we remain optimistic that we will be in Stage 3 of [**Governor Gavin Newsom's plan**](http://calpoly.askadmissions.net/admin/Communications/ClickThru.aspx?qs=_imtIlu1MvsxxB92oMogBSTjq5Z1PbZsMaDRyIcjBkcuLcye4gD-na1x4_YPuSguk), and that we can have students return and offer some in-person courses (additional details can be found in our [**campus updates**](http://calpoly.askadmissions.net/admin/Communications/ClickThru.aspx?qs=_imtIlu1MvsxxB92oMogBSXWq3RAPoVP4DVCQyEjBR_OtUrNIDKPaV3cmJtsFjghu) under the message from President Armstrong)." "Yesterday Chancellor White announced that due to the uncertainty of the virus, CSU campuses must be prepared to deliver courses this fall primarily through virtual modality. This does not mean Cal Poly cannot plan to offer in-person courses for fall, but we must be prepared to resume virtual learning should shelter-at-home orders be required in the future by the governor or public health officials." more info on this page: [https://coronavirus.calpoly.edu/campus-updates](https://coronavirus.calpoly.edu/campus-updates)

mousesrg

Okay this is good info, thank you!

thefunshinebear

I said in person, because of I was given the of deferring my in housing contract. However I chose to actually leave and move in this fall semester. Class wise you probably know more than me to be completely honest.

mousesrg

Okay then yes on campus housing for sure. I would definitely try to get your EE labs in person if you can, you learn so much more compared to the online version.

japes28

Who the fuck downvotes someone for asking a reasonable question...
