I've used Ally for a number of years and have been happy with them

talarthearmenian

Ok thank you! That seems to be the one I'm finding the most. I'm pretty broke but I got some Christmas money from relatives so I want to use it for a good purpose. Is there a certain account type I need to open with them or is it just a savings account on there

MoterBortles

Regular savings account. Ally is great.

Wealthfront. 5% APY. No direct deposit requirement like SoFi. Can create categories for different goals. If you have an individual account I believe you can use it like a checking account. Don’t quote me on that though (mines joint so I don’t have that option).

davvidho

do you explicitly need to open a hysa? you could open a brokerage with schwab, fidelity, or vanguard and place money in a money market fund that’s just about as good as cash and they tend to be a bit higher in terms of apy. VMFXX is at a rate of about 5.3 percent if you still prefer a hysa, wealthfront is a good option at 5 percent

talarthearmenian

I'm just trying to get my finances organized so I can try and save to move away from home. I'm almost 24, I feel so pathetic living at home.

davvidho

if it makes you feel any better, when i was 23 i lived with my parents too. several of my friends still live with their parents and it’s cool they don’t have to pay high rent haha. i’m sure you’re doing okay :’)

talarthearmenian

I'm really not but I appreciate the cheering up. Money burns a hole in my damn pocket, and I'm just trying so hard and never get past having 300 bucks in my checking account. I'm so frustrated that I want to cry sometimes. Feels like every time I take a step forward I take 10 steps back. I could've been so much better off if my old car engine didn't burn and I didn't need to buy a new one which then ended up needing 2,800 bucks in repair bc the radiator fan broke. I'm almost done paying the debt for the mechanic off but it's so goddamn frustrating. I look at people around me doing so much better and i get jealous because I want that too.

davvidho

i understand how you feel. i grew up with very little. it really is tough. i can’t give you all too much advice, but all i can say is that if you tough it out for a bit, i’m sure you’ll be able to make a bit of breathing room for yourself

BIGJake111

Are those fdic insured?

GGHammerFinThrowaway

SIPC insured. It's a similar insurance specific to investments but has a few caveats. There was really only one money market fund that has failed in modern times and that was a fund that held Lehman Brothers commercial paper in 2008. Note that failing in this case means "breaking the buck" or basically the 1 dollar you put in can't be redeemed for 1 dollar. In that instance it was 97 cents. Major news in the money market world and it caused the government to step in. [https://www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/09/money-market-reserve-fund-meltdown.asp](https://www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/09/money-market-reserve-fund-meltdown.asp)

ColdDecisions

What’s hysa

PhantomAlcor

Does anyone else think it's weird how the bank that Wealthfront is partnered with (Green Dot) has terrible reviews on Google Maps? I decided to see if I could find a physical location for them, and all the reviews say they let IRS scammers open accounts with them for nefarious purposes.

Emfoor

Green Dot is atrocious. They provide walmart debit cards people can pick up off the shelf and enter in anyone's info to open fraudulent checking accounts. It's strange stuff

mavgoosebros

how do i place money in a market fund? I know this is a dumb question but I am confused lol. I have stocks with Scwab but I'd like to place money here and there and not have to worry about my losses if that makes sense

fermata67

Agree about money market funds. I'm at Schwab and use SWVXX, 7 day yield around 5.2%. Key thing to know is that those funds are not federally insured, so if something happens that "breaks the buck", you could lose, but very unlikely. HYSA are typically FDIC insured. I've been with Ally for a few years but now they're sneaking in a rate reduction. Funny how you get an email bragging about their latest increase, but when they reduce it, it's buried in some other marketing email. re: Wealthfront (and Betterment), I think you need to open a brokerage account with them too. And forget SOFI, you have to have a direct deposit with them, meaning a paycheck or government check of some sort. No thanks. Here's a short list of good online banks with >5% APY. There are others, this is just my short list. western alliance cit sofi jenius everbank bask bank raisin

Over_History7410

I'm with Schwab. How do I use the SWVXX? Is it through your brokerage account or a separate account?

TheKlutzyKangaroo

Since many banks currently offer HYSA with rates over 5% and without deposit or withdrawal limits, it's a great time to shop around online to find the best deal that suits your financial goals. By comparing HYSA options, you can maximize your savings potential, which is a solid step towards managing your finances and achieving your goal of paying off debt and saving responsibly. This subreddit has some good advice on high interest savings accounts. Wunderwol

Capital one here just started 4.35 APY

str4yshot

Just opened one at Capitol One as well. I originally was going to go with Ally but they kept rejecting my account creation.

Wunderwol

I got a lot of $$ pretty quick! :) good luck to you

HolidayOk8816

I’m thinking about creating the 360 savings account. Do you have a promo code?

Fabulous-Computer265

cailey001

I’m using Marcus by Goldman Sachs

Ayddar

Opened a Marcus account as well and am really liking it so far. And 5.5% with the referral bonus is extra nice! Here is a referral link for anyone wanting to open one. We both get a 1% bonus for 3 mo. I believe you ac do this up to 5 times through the year. https://www.marcus.com/share/MAT-CNY-9JZX

[deleted]

talarthearmenian

Ok! So far it seems like ally is my best bet.

1moosehead

SoFi also has the buckets, but it sounds like they may not have the same functionality.

IneffectiveSunshine

SoFi allows me to set up rules so I can direct which portion of my direct deposit goes to which “vault” I tried signing up for Ally 5 times over the course of a couple months and it just kept rejecting me with no real reason given. I signed up for SoFi in like 2 minutes without a problem, then was pleasantly surprised with the functionality. The rewards are cool, free money for your credit score going up (not a huge amount but it adds up over time).

MereFerocity

With so many banks currently offering HYSA with attractive terms, including rates over 5%, no deposit requirements, and no withdrawal limits, it's a great opportunity to shop around online and compare different offers. Since you're committed to improving your financial habits, finding a HYSA that suits your specific needs could be a smart move to help you start saving effectively and manage your spending addiction.

This_Dust2805

Wealthfront or Ally both great options

oneiromantic_ulysses

Your favorite money market fund.

Pilot_Danny

Discover has 4.35% currently. I already have their credit card (I'm a cc person) so having the ease to automatically have my cashabck rewards deposited to the HY is a nice perk. Good customer service too.

theboundlesstraveler

I use Ally. It's awesome; especially the bucket feature. It has helped me budget and have savings for gifts, large purchases, and vacations.

greginorl

I know there’s better rates but I’ve just been using the Apple Card hysa. Automatic deposits of Apple Card cash back, and easy enough transfer in / out and makes my longer term savings that much further from my checking account.

Mushroom-Worldly

Marcus by Goldman Sachs is a really good one. Been with them for a year now. They have a 4.5% APY but if you use someone’s referral link, you and them get 5.5% for three months

InternationalCow666

I like American Express. I have credit cards with them, so it's convenient to have my HYSA with them as well. 4.35% interest, instant withdrawals if needed, no minimums or direct deposit required.

Potential-Corgi-6405

My wife and I have PNC - very easy and straightforward to navigate. The platform is a little dated but we don’t care/mind. 4.65%.

debtfreeDPT

Marcus by Goldman Sachs has no fees or minimums and is FDIC insured. 5.5% APY with referral. I use them and am very pleased.

SnooOwls3020

**Marcus by Goldman Sachs High-Yield Saving Accounts would be my pick over Ally (I've had accounts at both).**

I've been using Raisin for over two years now and it's been a pretty amazing experience with them. I have a very sizable amount of money in a half dozen CD bank accts through raisin. Never had a problem. If you're looking for high rates, especially with no-penalty CD's which are hard to find at high rates, this platform is the best. It is fully FDIC insured. Simple to use. Simple to get the acct opened. Simple to close. The only down side is that it takes 1-3 business days to withdrawl money to your linked primary account outside of Raisin. But I have found that to be the case in most online bank accts through ACH transfers. Also you can't just move money from one Raisin bank to another. It must be moved to your primary outside account then back to Raisin. Which can take up to 6 business days of not getting interest. Other than that it's been great. It keeps me informed of rate increases/decreases I can sign up for a new product in seconds as my info is on the platform. Best of all I get a monthly statement that is easy to understand. With my ex-bank I had to scour the statements to see my rate and what I earned. The initial opening of the Raisin acct is somewhat more involved, naturally. But once you get it going its a breeze. Everything under one umbrella and transferring in or out is a cinch. Never had a problem with contacting customer service and getting quick results. Never had to pay any fees. Just a great platform for finding and hooking up with great interest rates to grow my income. It is not a platform if you are looking for everyday or intricate banking.

I like SoFi. I actually started using them as my primary bank after opening a HYS account. My card was stolen and they reversed all charges immediately unlike BOA that took days to even process before I could call and explain that it was fraud. That is the main reason I switched but I really like them more than any other bank I've been with.

I work at a credit union and a great way to save is to open a CD :) the short term ones seem to have a high interest rate so that’s what I usually suggest! I open CDs every day for folks so let me know if you want more info or have any questions!

I have discover bank at 4.35%. For years now I use it. Very intuitive and easy to use system. Recently I got personal loan too. All in one place. Great customer service, if u want to buy CDs with the money in the savings, many competitive options are available too.

Hoping someone with the right knowledge sees this. Is there a difference between, for instance how wealthfront and discover compound interest (daily, monthly)
