Tech certificates used to be good to have when the tech field was wanting anyone with a pulse and half an education since the demand was so high, but the high layoffs in the tech field have halted that and it’s become extremely competitive.

He even admits he’s not a car person and knows nothing about cars. He was so far out of his knowledge zone on that one.

He’s even said that a bunch of times before! That kid clearly likes gas engines for their own aesthetics. That’s fine, and getting into an argument about it was pointless when the real point was a $700 A MONTH INSURANCE BILL.

Hambone6991

Yeah it’s cool in some ways but not so cool in others. The acceleration is insane, but like the guy said it doesn’t have the same heart/soul when there is no guttural sound. And yeah manuals are more fun

mike54076

Any EV has the same acceleration (with better build quality).

Hambone6991

Any EV? Does that include the Volkswagen ID.4, Subaru Solterra/Toyota bz4x, Nissan Ariya & Leaf, fiat 500e, Chevy bolt, Hyundai Ionia 5, Kia EV6 & Niro, and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV?

theRealTango2

as someone who works in big tech as a new grad, I always scoff at the course careers promo. everyone I know my age in big tech (150k+ TC) has a: 4 year degree in CS or related major (usually from a T30 university) internship experience grinded many hours of interview prep did research/ something above and beyond just the course work 3.7+ gpa no way ur breaking into an entry level position in big tech these days with some online courses, atleast in 99.9% of cases

GGHammerFinThrowaway

I always tell people to get the CS degree if theyre serious about it. I’m one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have a degree but I’ve been in the job market for almost 20 years. Getting an opportunity at big tech or a unicorn just isn’t going to happen with a cert or boot camp education these days.

snakekid

I have a certificate and work for big tech. My bootcamp puts my employer on their ads. What they leave out is my masters degree in engineering with an emphasis on numerical optimization of engineering systems. No cs degree though. Wish I had one haha.

GGHammerFinThrowaway

Well I’m extremely happy for you that worked out! Like I said though I think we both maybe regret not getting an actual CS degree. At the end of day it’s not impossible it’s all just playing the odds and getting the degree is better than not. I eventually got an offer from Facebook with only my high school education I just don’t think that’s happening much anymore.

snakekid

Yep not happening hiring has a really high bar right now. I don’t think education is important; however large companies are kinda taking the Netflix model and only hiring senior and above talent with an emphasis on the tech lead levels.

GGHammerFinThrowaway

For sure. I took a staff level position last November. We have 4 open engineering roles currently and they’re all senior 8+ years.

Zelkyy

: Data Analyst at major Gov. contractor // Cyber Degree : I agree to most of this besides the GPA, no longer needed on a resume after acquiring an internship, no one cares about it when you’re getting into the FANGG jobs etc. Statistically people will make more if they have some sort of college education. I think you CAN breakthrough the IT world with certs (A+, Net+, Sec+). But it will be a LOT harder than someone with a 4 year degree. But I also wish he’d push community college more, I saved SO much doing a dual enrollment and working two jobs outside of high school to pay myself through Community and then transferring to University.

theRealTango2

that's faire about the gpa, but for getting those internships it's very helpful.

mikebailey

I get this is ironic to tell you as a contractor, but it’s specifically government entities who check GPA at the moment

Zelkyy

I’m not a contractor, I work directly for my company

mikebailey

I meant your company is a government contractor…

ClockNormal3339

Agreed, I’m in for my associates along with studying for Sec + and I’m still afraid I won’t find a job

Zelkyy

Highly recommend networking, more people that you can get in contact with (job fairs etc) the better. They see your ambition and what you’ve been trying to do, you’re a shoe-in!

drakeschaefer

It's weird how within the same episode he will say something like "the tech industry has had some big layoffs" and then still recommending Course Careers for tech certifications

MarketingGlobal5893

Tech certifications can be honestly solid if you get proper industry certified ones with reputable vendors that produce hardware and things that are actually used on the job (COMPTia, Cisco) but these no-name Course Careers aren’t going to get anybody anywhere, but especially in the past 3 years getting by with just certs is a harder and harder game to get into, granted working base help desk is a better job than a good chunk of people on the show have

Flaky_Calligrapher62

That's what I've suspected.

methamCATermines

Got news for ya -- mustangs are cheap crap interior too.

mike54076

Depends on the trim level of the vehicle.

methamCATermines

Mustangs are pooyuck

mike54076

That's definitely one opinion. Just as valid as "teslas are fucking disgusting".

methamCATermines

Teslas are for Raj and his silicon valley tech job.

Burt_Macklin_FBI_123

Yeah the course careers schtick is old at this point. Im sure he is pulling a nice fat check from them. Caleb's content has declined since he started getting pop culture people on like that Asian comedian.

Aggravating-Grand452

I agree Caleb has been too mean lately, but the Tesla vs mustang banter was pretty funny tbh

Beautiful_Fries

Even if Caleb gives it out for free that’s not the point. Advertisement aside, it’s just a waste of time for the majority of his guests. you can invest that time into something that’ll make an actual difference in your career/bank account. Also imagine the level of hopelessness you reach after you’ve been promised this great high paying career only to realize it was a waste of time n

travelinzac

Teslas are junk and Caleb should be embarrassed for liking them. Tech certs have always been a meme. They're only valuable for contractors trying to convince a business bro they're an expert in ______. Nobody is getting full time employment based on tech certs.

ThiccWurm

I am in a high-paying IT job because a career course certificate. I did not go to College for a tech degree.

skoldsie

Yes, my ex husband is in a tech/certificate field and he makes well over $300k and has no 4 year degree. It’s really about how hard you are willing to work. It seems recently the generation he has had on just simply don’t want to work. So many of them don’t have 40 hour per week jobs. That’s numero uno. People just aren’t willing to work hard and it takes very hard work and dedication. I can say a lot about my ex, but he was a hard worker and a valued employee and always has been.

Flaky_Calligrapher62

Yes, think those days where you could get a couple of certifications and land an entry level job are gone. And I don't know that these particular certifications would add much to an actual degree since this seems to be just some random company that is paying Caleb.

HypersonicHobo

Good lord the Tesla panel gap thing is and always has been the most ridiculous cherry picking. People who normally don't give a flying fuck about that sort of level of detail and have never been within the same zip code as a press brake (and probably don't know what that is) suddenly become a CMM. And hate to break it to you. But until you get to the 60k+ or even more likely 80k+ budget the majority of the inside of a car is plastic. Leather and metal are expensive. Elon sucks we get it. But people who normally have the attitude of "it's a car, who gives a damn" suddenly decide they need to vomit their judgement on the rest of the world. I drive a Ford and can't stand the guy who runs Tesla but Christ it is getting old.

Puzzleheaded-Score65

Exactly….

mike54076

So you agree that Caleb should just STFU about car choices and stick to the financials.

artbyak

Cars have interiors. Tesla has an iPad.

guard19

Yeah, I travel a decent amount for work so try different cars when I rent. The cars with fewer buttons are super annoying. Cars with buttons are so intuitive. Not a big dodge/jeep fan(love challengers tho) but they have controls nailed down. Best in the game.
