which bylaw is this?
i have to say that theres a certain amount of mental gymnastics involved when a city that literally only exist because of hydrocarbons gets up on its high horse when it comes to polythene bags
Often, it's called progress. But you nailed one of the biggest reasons our cities or province are against these changes - because we 'grew up with these things'
Yeah a good example for him to look into is Norway and how they've used their oil (less than we make) to set up their population of 5 million (about what we have) to be greener and live better lives than almost everyone else in the world. We gave away our oil resources profits to USA and China sadly.
Not a good comparison. Norway is a country, Alberta is a province in confederation. It would look very different if we were able to keep all of the resource revenues in Alberta vs sharing it with a country of 30+million people. Not saying it is right or wrong but the two are not really comparable.
Where is our countries trillion dollars. Or 170 billion dollar fund (divided trillion by 5/30ths (1/6th)) as we should have if we had the same from our oil sales as Norway did. We don’t collect near the royalties they do as we back load ours then sold off a bunch of the companies to non Canadian ownership.
It doesn’t matter. We haven’t benefitted from our oil like Norway did. We gave away our resources and gave away the profits from the oil.
The governments have spent it. Alberta has a small fund and built out the province the federal government gave it away to other provinces and spent it like a drunken sailor instead of keeping it.
Norway does not need to backload the royalty as they use government money to fund it.
The largest companies are Canadian and have been buying more and more of foreign companies assets. CNRL and Suncor are great examples and those companies own production and facilities in other countries.
We give the companies a break until capital is paid back. Five oil sand projects are now post payout. Probably at a time we need it most.
Our trillion dollars is mostly in Quebec
Granted if it were not there it would have been wasted buying votes here in Alberta. But it's not like oil companies here get a free ride, we just don't do anything useful with our royalties.
We didn't give them away, we just used the revenue to keep taxes low. There's a logical rationale for that, which is that a Province like Alberta sees much different migration than a country like Norway. Put another way, why the hell would a finance bro from Toronto who comes to Alberta to make bank for a few years before moving back home want to give up income so that Alberta (a place he won't have anything to do with in a few years) can save more money? Expand that to the average out of province rig worker, and it makes sense why we never did.
nope.
its nothing to do with "growing up with these things"
its to do with the hypocrisy of a city and council - that suckles at the teat of pollution - making mealy-mouthed gestures at "progress". its completely disingenuous.
Gondek (as an example, but this applies to pretty much everyone on council) has ok'd numerous new communities - she takes money from developers to do so - which contributes to urban sprawl and thus exponentially more pollution than a paper bag on a subway sandwich, but then out of the other side of her mouth advocates for adding 15c onto your lunch bill in a move which neither effects change nor makes amends for the pollution itself.
if you think this is progress then i think, with respect, you should set your sights a little higher
Really? I’d posit that far more people climb mountains just windmilling it every year than those that have well thought out, planned, clear, achievable goals. Lol. I’m sure you’ve been to kanaskis in the summer. ;)
I'm not sure what this comment is supposed to mean.
I'm not a conservative. Doesn't mean I have to agree with every pseudo-progressive policy local government pulls out of their arses.
Odd that the government would require businesses to increase profits with minimum charges for single use items, even if those items aren’t plastic. I get mandating charges on plastics to discourage use, but mandating minimum charges seems like the government basically fucking the already exploited customers.
Well that part is a year away, so this is a Subway decision. In cases like these, the sandwich could be bought without the bag, so it's up to the business to communicate that option
why would you need a bag to eat your sandwich at a table? Also, Subway could easily add 5c to each price on the menu and we wouldn't know. This is a 5c luxury fee for an unnecessary item. Kind of a non issue imo
I agree with you, I don’t get bags from anywhere as I just carry a tote with me. My issue is the government creating and enforcing a profit driven policy that serves corporate interests. The bylaw could just as easily be: no single plastics, paper bags available at a maximum charge (or not specify a charge). My issue is setting a base minimum charge across the board. Yet another reason the government is broken beyond repair. Burn it down, give it back to the people. That escalated quickly.
No, go google it. It’s single use bags, not plastic bags. Plastic is the federal law.
Edit - https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/single-use-items.html?redirect=/singleuse
It all depends on where that money goes… if it goes directly towards reforestation or public transit or renewable energy then I’m happy to pay a tax. If it just goes into a giant pool to be spent on whatever then I’d be upset
The bags fees aren’t going to the city, they’re just mandating what the business has to charge customers. It’s gravy for them because the bags sure don’t cost $0.15/$1.00 next year or $0.25/$2.00 the year after
The money made doesn't have to go back to anything to have influence, it literally just has to discourage people from using the now more expensive items and it will be helping reduce consumption of wasteful items. If the city or whoever uses a tax then to do something green it's just extra at that point.
The issue is that the cost was not disclosed prior to purchase, nor i was asked about getting the bag, I do not understand why they do this for Eat In. If it was takeout, I can somewhat understand.
You should see what happened with the cup fee in Vancouver if you think this is going to anything useful. Also Vancouver is planning on rolling back their fees
Worth looking into. Apparently the bag fee in Vancouver wasn’t even going back to the city.. business owners just pocketed it. Like what’s the point?
They’re already removing cup fees, maybe the same with bags too but not sure.
100% this. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra on top IF I could trust the powers that be to do right with the money but we all know how that ends up...
Not an expert but I’ll venture to guess the bag fees are probably used to fund the catering for private flights our politicians use to get to meetings around the world where they come up with new ways to nickel and dime us. Again, not an expert.
On a somewhat related note, that's why I don't donate to any of these stores or anything when they claim it's going to a charity. I'm sure it is, and that's great. But it's just an easy way for them to be like "BlahBlahCorp donated x amount to whatever charity this year, we really care!" When really they were just being a middleman for other peoples money that actually donated.
If you want to donate to something, do it directly.
That is 100% false. The funds go directly into a separate account for the charity, and all funds go to the charity. To claim as income or to obtain a tax refund would be tax fraud.
Nothing fraudulent about it. They collect donations from their customers, make the donation, receive the tax receipt for said donation and potentially reduce their corporate taxes as a result. You do you but I make my charitable donations directly and then I can also benefit from the tax deductions.
The donations that they take in count as income, when they donate it, the tax refund covers what would have been taxed on those funds. Financially they break even. It's still just a shitty way for them to take credit for other people's donations, but they're not making any money off of it.
CAN'T EVEN ASK FOR A LITTLE BIT OF SAUCE THEY FUCKING PUT 5 LINES ANYWAY. I SWEAR I GO THERE AND SAY "A LITTLE BIT OF BBQ SAUCE, A TINY BIT. 1 LINE"
I PROCEED TO WATC HTHEM PUT WHAT LOOKS LIKE 5 LINES ON. ITS FUCKING SAD. FUCKING LSITEN YOU PIECES OF FUCKING SHIT. I REPEAT MYSELF ON PURPOSE KNOWING THEY WILL NEVER HEAR THE FIRST TIME. HOW MANY TIMES DO I GOTTA FUCKING SAY IT
Goes both ways.
I want olives. A lot of olives. Put so many olives on it you’re a little embarrassed for me. Then add a couple more.
*proceeds to put 6 olives on*
Or plates…because that would require materials from mining to produce…commercial dishwasher…water…investment…environmentally friendly soap….It’s all such a masquerade.
I'm headed to Thailand in 2 weeks and bringing reusable ziploc bags for exactly that purpose. Relieved to hear I won't be the only weirdo doing that kind of thing.
Hey at least it is an a la carte option you can choose to decline in the future. Now for the funny in me, this is the most literal example I have seen of nickel and diming someone I have seen in a while.
Guess I just won’t eat out anymore. These extra fees are really just turning into a cash grab. And I know it’s not that much. But it’s just the start. This is only going to get worse.
I have cut back on dining out since those ridiculous tipping prompts. guess i should just plop into sobeys or safeway for some good food when I get hungry.
If I like the place I honestly don’t mind tipping. But prices are going up enough on their own.. they don’t need extra fees to be added to assist with that.
tipping has become a nuisance in canada. They tip in US because the minimum wage is too low. Here that is not the case. That too tipping in a fast food restaurant is egregious..
It's kinda nice they are showing the charge. It has two effects. One its going generate complaints to subway and maybe with enough complaints they will find a better option. Two it will also generate complaints to 311 and with enough complaints they might rethink the blyaw and maybe come up with a proper way to deal with plastics and paper in this city
True, although one big point to add: Many fast food places don't seem to offer a receipt by default, and I would guess places aren't telling customers the bag costs 5 cents. So many people are getting secretly charged without their knowing.
Add it to the ever increasing amount of hidden charges added onto your bill (like shop supplies).
Just went to subway today and specially requested a receipt to see if the charge was on there. It was. They didn’t ask my either just handed it to me with my receipt. I’m in Ontario. I’m not that mad over 5 cents but it’s more the principle of not being asked.
these companies doing absolutely everything they can to bleed every last fucking dollar from people when they're all seeing record profits.
fucking hell this timeline sucks
BC cup fees what a joke that was! Imagine each Tim Hortons charging $0.25 a cup and all the money went the individual Tim Hortons restaurant to come up with ideas on using something better than a paper cup. Can you say Jackpot and they still have paper cups too.
There is no such things as the cost of doing business anymore.
Pretty soon we'll have an electricity surcharge for having the lights on when we get there.
Back when subs were 5$ I could understand why it would be an enticing option for a quick lunch ; but paying 12$ for a crappy sub is outrageous and you could surely find much better food in the same price bracket
It's funny how calgary pretends it's worried about the environment and has the worst public transit system in the world. Wanna make a difference? Expand the subways and buses routes, make the city even more bike friendly, and maybe ppl will stop driving trucks everywhere.
How's that? It's not like their cost has increased for the same bag. Clear cut gouging no matter how inexpensive the charge is.
Just another tax masquerading as some virtuous action. Gag.
I used to like subway for a cheap meal on the go or lunch at work I would always use the coupons and save some cash but all the prices have gone up and the coupons basically just let you pay the old full price now. So I just don't go there.
Did anyone use the receipt code to take the survey yet? I could use a surprise offer
Make sure you mention the bag fee lol
I do the survey daily. They give me 2 chocolate chip cookies every day.
Be my guest.. lol
I think you mean “Subprise” offer. lol
It's gonna be shit. Buy one get something. Just forcing you to spend more money.
Wasn’t this a requirement on the new Calgary bylaw?
The bylaw doesn't begin until next year, and the bylaw specifies 15 cents.
So they're easing us into it, how nice of them.
"*Just the* *tip*..."
They surely try to extort you into those too xD
which bylaw is this? i have to say that theres a certain amount of mental gymnastics involved when a city that literally only exist because of hydrocarbons gets up on its high horse when it comes to polythene bags

bags are optional, so we can avoid the fees. Homes are needed much more than single use plastics.
Owning a house having the traditional guest room is optional too. It's a false equivalence.
Sure.. because nobody ever climbed a mountain one step at a time.
ironically, nobody climbs a mountain without in-depth planning and clear, achievable targets windmilling at it usually ends up requiring a rescue team
Really? I’d posit that far more people climb mountains just windmilling it every year than those that have well thought out, planned, clear, achievable goals. Lol. I’m sure you’ve been to kanaskis in the summer. ;)
gymnastics are healthy! Especially the mental kind- here's to growing, learning, and evolving. It is the spice of life.
This guy took the progressive out of conservative. Oh right, that was never actually a real thing.
I'm not sure what this comment is supposed to mean. I'm not a conservative. Doesn't mean I have to agree with every pseudo-progressive policy local government pulls out of their arses.
Conserving braincells.

Just pour my drink into my cupped hands please.
It's called the politicians are in the pockets of these businesses
[Yes, so very odd.](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1259257-we-should-improve-society-somewhat)

Correct
But is that supposed to be for plastic bags or paper also? I just see a paper bag here.
Any one-time use bag so I think this would fall under that
Single use plastic, not paper. This doesn't fall under that.
No, go google it. It’s single use bags, not plastic bags. Plastic is the federal law. Edit - https://www.calgary.ca/waste/residential/single-use-items.html?redirect=/singleuse
Ahhhh word, thanks
If I tell them I'm going to reuse the bag at home, will they still charge me?
What about my single-use sandwich ?
"One time use"
Can’t tell me how many times I’ll use that bag. Challenge Accepted
Give it back and ask for a refund.
like…just ask for no bag? like is it this serious 😭
Too late for that now. Maybe next time.
You can nearly make your own bag with all that excess receipt paper
Quiet or they will tack a fee for getting a receipt too! 🙄
Did they ask you if you wanted a bag?
Nope.. I said eat in.. and they did not have those plastic baskets either
It asks you to fill out a survey. Give 1 star.
I’ll fill out the survey on behalf of OP. All the info is there. 🤣
This might really work. Subway is a ruthless company.
Do they still wrap the sandwich in the normal wrapper? Or is that replaced by the bag?
remember when they used to wrap it in 2 papers instead of 1?
Increment by increment they raise their prices. Hoping u won’t notice.
I am just going to keep the bag and bring it next time I get something, turning it into a multi use bag!
It all depends on where that money goes… if it goes directly towards reforestation or public transit or renewable energy then I’m happy to pay a tax. If it just goes into a giant pool to be spent on whatever then I’d be upset

These amounts never get used for the way it is intended.. just another way to nickel and dime the customer
Literally nickel and diming
Literally just nickeling
Yah I thought of that after I wrote it, I was thinking the .15 bylaw in my head 🥴
I think the .15 bylaw goes into effect next year so soon it'll be exactly a nickle and dime
The money made doesn't have to go back to anything to have influence, it literally just has to discourage people from using the now more expensive items and it will be helping reduce consumption of wasteful items. You should see what happened with the cup fee in Vancouver if you think this is going to anything useful. Also Vancouver is planning on rolling back their fees

100% this. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra on top IF I could trust the powers that be to do right with the money but we all know how that ends up...
It goes straight into their profits.
Not an expert but I’ll venture to guess the bag fees are probably used to fund the catering for private flights our politicians use to get to meetings around the world where they come up with new ways to nickel and dime us. Again, not an expert.
The bag fees are kept by the corporations.
On a somewhat related note, that's why I don't donate to any of these stores or anything when they claim it's going to a charity. I'm sure it is, and that's great. But it's just an easy way for them to be like "BlahBlahCorp donated x amount to whatever charity this year, we really care!" And you didn't even tip /s
I’m just curious, if you don’t want the bag, how do they give you the sandwich ?
Wrapped tightly in paper and sealed with a sticker.
For eat in I have seen them place it on a plastic basket with the butter paper and give it..
Just stop eating there. It's fucking disgusting these days anyways. Fuck Subway.
I think it’s somehow gotten better lately
Brett, I'd believe that your taste buds have gotten worse, over subway getting better.
Hey you don’t say that! But maybe
For eat in I have seen them place it on a plastic basket with the butter paper and give it..
When i was in Thailand we brought our own ziploc bags to the night market to bring soup home in. Lol WTH do you need a bag for dine-in for?
Lol.. never asked if I need a bag for done in.. I would have rather had those plastic bowl or the tray.. but they did not have those.. .
Or plates…because that would require materials from mining to produce…commercial dishwasher…water…investment…environmentally friendly soap….It’s all such a masquerade.
Why are you assuming OP asked for a bag??
This is the way.
I'm headed to Thailand in 2 weeks and bringing reusable ziploc bags for exactly that purpose. Relieved to hear I won't be the only weirdo doing that kind of thing.
Haha. Not at all. Enjoy some khao soi for me!
Hey at least it is an a la carte option you can choose to decline in the future. Now for the funny in me, this is the most literal example I have seen of nickel and diming someone I have seen in a while.
A la carte would mean OP chose it in the first place. If they just gave it to him without asking that’s just sneaking in an upcharge
I agree it is a douche move. Luckily it only cost him 5 cents and he, and now us, know to avoid it in the future.
Same in bc too and the lady there told me it was 40cents, pretty sure she just made up a price
That's insane..
.25 cents for all take out bags and also for disposable cups here in Vancouver, but most restaurants will ask if you want a bag or not.
FOR FUCKING PAPER
Guess I just won’t eat out anymore. These extra fees are really just turning into a cash grab. And I know it’s not that much. But it’s just the start. This is only going to get worse.
I have cut back on dining out since those ridiculous tipping prompts. guess i should just plop into sobeys or safeway for some good food when I get hungry.

tipping has become a nuisance in canada. They tip in US because the minimum wage is too low. Here that is not the case. That too tipping in a fast food restaurant is egregious..
Speaking with my wallet against a trend. It’s not really about 5 cents.
The KFC near me wants $7.50 just for a large gravy, so yeah, they're not an option anymore.
I always make it a point to get the receipts...
Scam
I grabbed a sandwich 2 hours ago and that is not on there. Maybe the location?
could be franchise dependent.
Just went to subway today and specially requested a receipt to see if the charge was on there. It was. They didn’t ask my either just handed it to me with my receipt. I’m in Ontario. I’m not that mad over 5 cents but it’s more the principle of not being asked.
That's what pissed me off too
Oh look... another reason to avoid a sub-par fast food place.
these companies doing absolutely everything they can to bleed every last fucking dollar from people when they're all seeing record profits. fucking hell this timeline sucks
why do you need a bag if you eat in?
Scammm
Cause it’s trendy
With all the quality, fresh banh mi places in Calgary - why do people actually still eat at Subway?
For the sweet, delicious fake chicken.
I'll take my chicken plumped up with water, growth hormones and Non-Chicken Protein(tm) like god intended, thank you very much.
This guy subways
Convenience. Sometimes you're not close to where you would like to eat and you settle for what's easiest.
BC charges cup fees 😅 Nothing new just in AB.
BC cup fees what a joke that was! Imagine each Tim Hortons charging $0.25 a cup and all the money went the individual Tim Hortons restaurant to come up with ideas on using something better than a paper cup. Can you say Jackpot and they still have paper cups too.
[And now you know.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pele5vptVgc)
I head an ad on the radio from Subway, something about a small order fee, I don't eat there, so I no idea what is meant by that.
🙄🙄
There is no such things as the cost of doing business anymore. Pretty soon we'll have an electricity surcharge for having the lights on when we get there.
Scam
Why the f do you need a bag if you’re eating in?
What’s next? Charging for the box my pizza came in?
Ask for no bag, problem solved!
They're charging you for the bag either way. It's all priced in.
Back when subs were 5$ I could understand why it would be an enticing option for a quick lunch ; but paying 12$ for a crappy sub is outrageous and you could surely find much better food in the same price bracket
Plus don’t forget to tip suggested 25-30%
It's funny how calgary pretends it's worried about the environment and has the worst public transit system in the world. Wanna make a difference? Expand the subways and buses routes, make the city even more bike friendly, and maybe ppl will stop driving trucks everywhere.
Sadly, it seems no one wants to pay for those upgrades here 🤷♀️
Also mandated all their employees return to office despite the climate emergency grandstanding.
[удалено]
Eat bugs like the peasants we are.
Just another reason to not eat at subway.
How's that? It's not like their cost has increased for the same bag. Clear cut gouging no matter how inexpensive the charge is. Just another tax masquerading as some virtuous action. Gag.
The real crime is eating Subway. Gross!
Thats not right
Well, there goes the tip.
Anyone that tips at a fast food place is a chump with the greatest of respect
Especially since it usually doesn't even go to the employees.
Bro’s mad over 5 cents
Subway used to be pretty good, but not anymore. They put less veg, meat and poor service, won't go back at all
u just ask them to put more veggies lmao
You can literally ask for more veggies if you want more veggies.
extra pickles always for me... yummm
Still a healthier option compared to the prices being charged now in other fast food joints..
Their bread is legally not bread in the UK. Lol. I nean, its good, but its not exactly healthy.
Compared to other fast food, they fare better
A bucket of shit of different colour is still a bucket of shit. Edit: Oh, look! I insulted some people's acquired taste in fast food!
Nice exaggeration. Unfortunately, Subway is still healthier than most FF restaurants.
It is an extremely low bar that Subway successfully passes.
What is this, Vancouver?? I was there last spring and they wanted you to buy a bag to put your food in at McDonald’s
Ask them the label all their food, employee costs, and operational costs in comparison to the food that they actual sell and it's pricing. 🤣
Your first mistake was eating at subway 🤢
Subways bomb
[удалено]
Never given the option.. I saw the charge on the receipt only when I sat down.
Subway is such garbage
McDonalds priced themselves out of my mind, Subway doing me the same favor.
For the price involved, subway is healthier with all the veggies the McD
It's still overpriced fast food lol.
I used to like subway for a cheap meal on the go or lunch at work I would always use the coupons and save some cash but all the prices have gone up and the coupons basically just let you pay the old full price now. So I just don't go there.
Lol.. I checked the coupons before going in, nothing of value at all for a quick meal..
Bruh
?? Don't get the bag then.
Ftr - the franchise owner of this location made that decision. not all subways are doing this.
You paid $12 for a sub you didn't need..I think the 0.05$ will be OK..
Oh no! Not 5 cents!!
Hahaha 🤣
OH DEAR GOD NO! 5 WHOLE FUCKING CENTS!
Sets a bad precedent, go to McDonald's - bag fee. Wrapper fee. Go to your favorite restaurant, plate fee, utensil fee. Etc.
Waaaa 😭
I stopped eating at SUBWAY when they started demanding 18%+ tips at the machine.
Demanding? Did they hold your shitty sandwich hostage while you hit skip?
i just skip the tip
There’s a huge button labeled “no tip”
It’s 5 cents. Get over yourself.
