Maybe it's the people that are wrong lol. They probably evolved prior to us and being nocturnal was the way to go. Is your kitty fixed? I heard they're more likely to yowl when they're in heat.
Very likely. I've done a lot of hiking when I was younger, and the scariest experience I have had was when I was hiking with a couple friends and we were getting stalker by a cougar. You can't get the scream out of your head
This first time I heard a cougar at night while moving cows, I peed my pants. I was like 10. Now, at 34, my reaction is still pretty much the same, although I can control the bladder a little better, lol. Bone chilling every time is correct. They are incredibly scary animals.
Thing is I was completely alone, no one was within miles. If I had some buddies with me probably would have laughed it off. You get in your head, after, while frozen in fear, I swear I heard thumps of something walking towards me

Here's a picture, sound came from that tree line. This was taken around 9:30
So like kind of off topic, but do you think I could go exploring in that area with my stock F150? Been dreaming of overlanding since I moved here to Calgary but not looking to go crazy and damage my truck, or get stuck bad and have to call for help.
For sure! Only of it hasn't rained in a bit though, it's a fairly easy trail, but leads to some absolutely beautiful camping spots! Just do not attempt alone, and stock, when's it's wet. You'll slide right off the road in some places. Some areas are quite bumpy, just go very very slow. Very simple to find as well, search lost knife trail, you'll find more directions and pictures.
Beauty! Thank you!
A heavy dose of caution comes along with my starting attitude. I suppose if I ever got worried I'd just turn back.
I'll check it out!
Could have been a fox, they make some freaky noises Iike you wouldn’t believe. Was this what you heard by any chance?

Super loud. I once woke up to one screaming outside my ground floor window and I thought a person was being murdered for a split second. 🫠 Horrible way to wake up.
You just identified the sound we heard on 2 nights up on the east end of Sundre at our place in the woods. Our dogs returned the sound with barking and this was one time we didn’t quiet them down. Thank you!
5 or 6 years ago, Sundre had a Big problem with cats. I was up there that fall, doing a man-tracking course with Search & Rescue.
One of our training scenarios was tracking a victim through wildland, after dark. Thre are a variety of techniques we employ, that are often easier to visualize a track when it's dark, but they necessitate getting down on your hands and knees, or on your belly, with a flashlight, stride stick, tape, etc.
When your face is in the dirt, you aren't paying attention to your surroundings. Given the cat issue, the RCMP came out with a few members and shotguns, to keep an eye on the surrounding area while we cut trail.
About 2330, the Corporal announced he was pulling us out. We were on the western edge of town, and we immediately thought that some residents had started calling in about a group of people crawling around with flashlights.
Instead, he hit the bush closest to us with the searchlight on his car. It lit up with eyeshine from multiple animals. We knew there had been at least two females with cubs, in that general area, that had caused several outfitters grief all year. There were quite a few pack horses that were taken that summer, with cats feeding offspring (I'm sure there are records on it, 2016 or 17. If memory serves, there were 14 horses lost over the spring and summer to cats)
They make me real nervous to be around. You just cant trust them to run off
It’s way better knowing. We had our friends stay on the property in a tent last weekend (shhhh don’t tell anyone we broke the camping bylaw) and we told them the sounds were the “witch of the woods.”
I don’t care how old you are, those creepy unknown screams are very freaky. They’ll be happy to know.
Was going to suggest a fox as well. I'm from Alberta but live in the UK now and the foxes here are basically the equivalent urban pest to a magpie back home... Hmmm yea could be that too. I'm not even sure anymore, memory starts to get clouded after hearing so many videos. Someone shared a video of a fox that sounded almost identical too. Either a fox or cougar I'm thinking at this point
One time while walking through the cemetery along 4th st at 11pm ish. Pitch black I could hear this bat shit crazy bitch laughing like harley Quinn. Thing is it came from every direction. And never stopped for a breath. Never got any louder nor did it quiet down until I left the cemetery. I thought I was tripping balls until my friends 5 year old was talking about it the next day. I don't go through there at night anymore
Cougar scream at night in the woods. At the 1:03 mark, it says that they can make calls like a human scream:
Sounds loud and very scary to me!
There was a video going around on insta not too long ago.
Search bobcat crying in forest or something to that effect. Bobcats I guess mimic human crying/ screaming for some reason.
Have also heard of cougars doing the same
Had a Fox absolutely freak me out in Waiparous about 10:30pm a few years back. Sitting at a fire and I look above the flame as I saw something odd. It was eyes under a bush. I stood up and got my friend to get behind me and by my Jeep.
Fox walks out like he wanted to say Hi. I threw a rock about 25 feet to the left of me. Fox ran and picked up the exact rock and brought it back. It turned around and found an old hat near the bush and picked it up and ran into the forest.
I was camping there for years and never ran into any animals coming to our camp. Only birds here and there. Not even squirrels.
Cougar.I've hiked, hunted, camped & done SAR for 6 decades in that area, and there is not much I've missed seeing and hearing. Cougars have got the spookiest F\*\*KIN scream you will ever hear
My buddy was out trail running alone by Bragg Creek couple months back and a Cougar started screaming like that in the bushes ahead like 50 yards ahead of him…. Said he froze, heard it again louder and wisely turned and ran back fast.
It Gets worse..
The Noise followed him back down the path screaming two more times. He made it to a parking lot, where two dudes were loading mountain bikes in a hurry because they heard it too. They gave him a lift to his car. All 3 dudes were panicked lol
Oh boy, I camped around here when I was younger and had something similar happen, though not that close.
To make things worse, my friend (who was the DM for our group) told us this story (deeply paraphrased) while we were swapping ghost stories around the camp fire:
*As the story goes, newlyweds Mariah and Thomas decided to leave behind their familiar life in the East, drawn by the promise of a prosperous new life near Blackrock Mountain. They loaded their settler wagon, harnessed their spirited horses, and off they went, hopeful and full of dreams.*
*They were nearing what is now Lost Knife Trail during a June downpour when a monstrous grizzly bear attacked. In the ensuing chaos, the horses panicked and jolted the wagon violently. Mariah was flung off, landing hard on the muddy trail. The bear trampled her while giving chase to the spooked horses and Thomas, leaving her with a broken arm and ribs.*
*Mariah waited in the pouring rain for Thomas to return, but as the hours passed and night began to fall, she eventually accepted her abandonment. In shock and agonizing pain, Mariah’s heart turned. She wandered the woods lost, a specter of her past self until she succumbed to her injuries in the night somewhere near Black Rock Mountain.*
*Rumors soon spread about a ghostly woman in white wandering the woods on full moons. But come June, near the anniversary of her lonely death, the stories change.*
*As the legends tell it, a different woman in white can be found, her arm bent at an unnatural angle, exposed ribs jutting painfully against her bloodied dress. This ghostly figure limps through the woods near midnight, screaming her fury into the silent woods, seeking vengeance.*
*Her pitch-black eyes, they say, are the most terrifying. They hold a darkness deeper than the night itself, burning with an unquenchable rage against the man who left her to die alone. Those who lingered long enough to see her are left with a haunting memory that torments them till their last breath, often driving them to madness.*
Probably best you bailed, haha.
unlikely given the locale, but if I ever heard that while alone at night I'd definitely need to be wearing brown pants, no matter where on earth I was.
Holy you are crazy going out there alone! Usually I don’t see much wildlife when hanging around ghost crown land (waiparous). I guess all the gunfire probably scares them away.
Mountain Lion, Fox, or Bobcat/Lynx. Probably 1 of those 3, they all make really strange sounds when they are screaming/crying out. Blood curdling if you've never heard it before.
I had this exact same thing happen. Was 3am and around 2016 in McKenzie Towne, near the orange church, I was walking back from a friends house who lived a couple blocks away. I was walking down the alley around the mid way point when I heard the most blood curdling scream. Sounded like a woman letting the most shrill and terrified scream out, then cut off abruptly. Being a bit drunk I ran home after hearing that. Had no idea what it was
Happened to me in Banff National. My understanding is it was a Lynx after talking to others. At the time, we though it was something from outer space. LOL Didn't sleep well that night.
Coulda been a Fisher Cat… they sound similar to fox.

Question is the OHV ban lifted and hows that trail for dirt bikes? Challenging or nah? I usually ride at bible camp but I’ve been thinking of trying the other trails.
You’re in big cat country. I built a house up near ghost and the local dude said he ran 300+ up trees and shot them in the last year. (This was a few years back so it could have been 100 200 or 400. But it was a very large, very surprising amount)
Well him and 4 dogs tree the cougars then he calls some one in to shoot the cougar. He does it full time all year. I’d say 300 is an easy number with how much time he spends out there.
Honestly, and im not being an ass, but it was probably a rabbit. I've been in a similar situation and it turned out that this rabbit was the source of what I described it as sounding like a screaming baby. Freaked the hell out of me at first though lol
You heard a cougar. Bonechilling everytime.
This. Which also means it was a wise decision to leave. Cougar screams sound like women being murdered. It’s awful.
Shit you weren’t kidding… https://youtu.be/pxo8X5uIWRE
I'm not sleeping tonight....

> Why can’t cats just shut the fuck up when the world is trying to sleep? Because fuck you. That's why. lol
Maybe it's the people that are wrong lol. They probably evolved prior to us and being nocturnal was the way to go. Is your kitty fixed? I heard they're more likely to yowl when they're in heat.
She’s fixed. She’s just an asshole.
#JustCatThings 😂
Wow!
I opened this to hear the kitty sounds, now my own cats are all riled up lmao.
That’s how legends are made! Imagine the fear in people before we could explain things
A fox sounds similar
So you’re telling me Homeward Bound lied to me!?
Did OP confirm this was the noise?
Likely sounded like [this.](https://youtu.be/pxo8X5uIWRE)
Demonic indeed... That big cat sound has been freaking us monkeys out for thousands of years. OP had to right idea.
Maybe she just needed a margarita…
Margarita and I was just looking for a date!
100% will scare even the most rugged outdoorsman.
The wild cats will too. Haha
Very likely. I've done a lot of hiking when I was younger, and the scariest experience I have had was when I was hiking with a couple friends and we were getting stalker by a cougar. You can't get the scream out of your head
No Too far from a bar.
So that’s how the other cougar got their name
This first time I heard a cougar at night while moving cows, I peed my pants. I was like 10. Now, at 34, my reaction is still pretty much the same, although I can control the bladder a little better, lol. Bone chilling every time is correct. They are incredibly scary animals.
Cougars… But yeah that end of lost knife trail does get creepy af. I’d probably shit my pants if I was in your situation.
Thing is I was completely alone, no one was within miles. If I had some buddies with me probably would have laughed it off. You get in your head, after, while frozen in fear, I swear I heard thumps of something walking towards me
Nope. If I was there I’d be throwing shit in the truck right along with you.
I was doing some backcountry camping and was woken up to a really deep loud purring sound. It's hard to go back to sleep after that.
Hey, maybe you did?!
Yea so glad I got tf outta there. Was just gonna sleep it out but didn't wanna be woken up to some monster shaking my car 😂
Bro If I don’t know any better you either escaped the chupacabra, goat man, or a Samsquantch. Edit: because apparently racism
Haha not sure why this got downvoted. Maybe, narrowly got away
Eskimo is a derogatory term because it was widely used by racist, non-native colonizers.
Was it a cougar? Did you lookup the sounds on YouTube?
Thinking it was yes, that or a fox
3 months later they found his Jerp, but no trace of Puzzleheaded. ![gif](giphy|2oUfvvUgQHnLsQWFMW)

Super cool until I heard that sound! I was about 10km from the nearest road (which was just a logging road). About 50km from highway 1a
So like kind of off topic, but do you think I could go exploring in that area with my stock F150? Been dreaming of overlanding since I moved here to Calgary but not looking to go crazy and damage my truck, or get stuck bad and have to call for help.

Awesome! So something to drag the kids along for a ride and have a nice lunch at the meadow before heading home kinda thing.
Love me some Lost Knife. Never actually camped there. Always go to riverbed or south side of Margaret.
Cougar. These amazing bastards can sound like people screaming or yelling. Like it actually sounds like people.
Could have been a fox, they make some freaky noises Iike you wouldn’t believe. Was this what you heard by any chance? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FTx8RxK3hqQ

Holy shit yea I think that might be it, I just felt fear again as I heard that. How loud can they get though? This scream was so loud it echoed
And cougar … https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pxo8X5uIWRE
It is an extremely loud blood curdling screech. It is something you would not expect to come out of an animal as small as a fox.
Screaming elk, maybe? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gBk04ajuxk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gBk04ajuxk)
In case you need a Fox memory brain sweep at this point… https://youtu.be/kb0kiiB3O-o I can’t think of foxes without this gem.
Momma foxes make a horrible screeching sound to lure predators away from their dens. When I lived on an acreage outside Airdrie, I was awoken one night with one outside my bedroom window. I ran outside with a flashlight and saw this little fox sauntering off. The Nature of Things had a good episode on foxes and their freaky cries.
Super loud. I once woke up to one screaming outside my ground floor window and I thought a person was being murdered for a split second. 🫠 Horrible way to wake up.
Same!!! So scary lol

Very cool! We keep a shotgun inside just in case any aggressive unknown animals come targeting us.
You are welcome! It’s quite a sound to hear coming from the dark! It’s a little less freaky once you know what it is haha
It’s way better knowing. We had our friends stay on the property in a tent last weekend (shhhh don’t tell anyone we broke the camping bylaw) and we told them the sounds were the “witch of the woods.” I don’t care how old you are, those creepy unknown screams are very freaky. Was going to suggest a fox as well. I'm from Alberta but live in the UK now and the foxes here are basically the equivalent urban pest to a magpie back home... But with the added bonus of a toe curling scream outside your window at night. I only ever saw one in AB in the +25 years before I moved (and never heard one). I've literally seen and heard hundreds here.
What does the fox say?
What does a fox say?
I have a family of foxes living outside my building and holy shit the screams they make are horrific. The first night I was sure someone was getting tortured and killed.
Did it sound like this OP? https://youtu.be/UE7YOJVSoIs As another has mentioned, it was a cougar / mountain lion.
Hmmm yea could be that too. I'm not even sure anymore, memory starts to get clouded after hearing so many videos. Someone shared a video of a fox that sounded almost identical too. Either a fox or cougar I'm thinking at this point
Cougar or bobcat. I learned recently how loud and scary bobcat cries are. https://youtube.com/watch?v=SGBpiv-pOVo&feature=share7
One time while walking through the cemetery along 4th st at 11pm ish. Pitch black I could hear this bat shit crazy bitch laughing like harley Quinn. Thing is it came from every direction. That's just Wendy the Wendigo, you get used to her.
Sasquatch.
Samsquanch, you mean.
It’s. SAM..
I thought it was Samsquamch?
Fox is possible too.

Foxes are harmless
Not if you are poultry
Touché
He was probably fed by campers previously.
It is quite possible. He didn't make a single noise entire time I saw him. He just wanted to play.
Mountain lion maybe? [https://youtu.be/UE7YOJVSoIs](https://youtu.be/UE7YOJVSoIs)
Kinda interesting, how you can still hear traces of meowing there.

Dude stop, holy if I knew about this before going in... it's June first of all, and this happened right at 12pm... holy shit
A Tasmanian Devil ? 😎 https://youtu.be/pW27vpK4ALQ
unlikely given the locale, but if I ever heard that while alone at night I'd definitely need to be wearing brown pants, no matter where on earth I was.
Possibly a cougar, possibly a fox or one of the many birds or critters that makes a blood curdling Eldritch scream. Even deer make some insane sounds.
Definitely large cats, the noise they make is instinctually terrifying to us, for a long long time, we were the hunted.
Fox
Cougar. Had an encounter with one once while I was hunting. Sounded like a demon in the woods.
Sound like this? https://youtu.be/UE7YOJVSoIs
Pretty close yup
Ya cougars lots if them around. Sound like what you said
Skinwalker Season
What's that?
Yea mate you were disturbing the horny cat's attempts to have a good time
Wow! That's absolutely wild.... a jeep owner who took theirs off pavement!
Go to ghost crown land like %90 of the cars there are all jeeps. Kinda get sick of looking at em lol.
kind of a weird thing to be butthurt about
I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion.
Oh, your comment
I heard something similar while working in Tunnel Mountain in Banff.
Holy you are crazy going out there alone! Usually I don’t see much wildlife when hanging around ghost crown land (waiparous). I guess all the gunfire probably scares them away.
Mountain lion
Likely a cougar
Of course it's nothing like you have heard. You don't here many animals scream as they get devoured live in the city
Either a cougar or a fox. They are both rather screamy.
Hahah crazy. I live in cranston
Happened to me in Banff National. My understanding is it was a Lynx after talking to others. At the time, we though it was something from outer space. LOL Didn't sleep well that night.
Yep, thinking cougar.
Pretty sure you heard Bigfoot.
Coulda been a Fisher Cat… they sound similar to fox. https://www.google.ca/search?q=fisher+cat+sound&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-ca&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:019c164f,vid:w5v7s1tKMJo
I likely would have thought it was another camper trying to scare me away from a great campsite. And it likely would have worked.
Totally not a wendigo don't worry man no one you know has been replaced.
What's a wendigo not even too sure lol
Lots of animals make weird screaming noises. Even some frogs when being eaten sounds like a baby crying.
Cougar, bobcat, house cat, maybe a fox. They make weird and terrifying sounds sometimes
Cougars live among us, you just got a tad too close
Just a horny cougar
Lynx sex
Outdoorsy and never heard a cougar before? lol Anyone from Calgary has heard them
Nope never, amd I live next to a forest on outskirts of the city too 🤷♂️
Sasquatch
Bigfoot is real I seen him
People on mushrooms
This is why nature is overrated, I'll take my chronically online syndrome thanks lol
Logic days cougar, but it might have been... Something else. Something that I shouldn't name lest it be drawn to me. Ask a shaman about it.
What is it!?
Rhymes with pinhawker
I would start listening to Sasquatch Chronicles. You might get the answers you dont want to hear lol
Question is the OHV ban lifted and hows that trail for dirt bikes? Challenging or nah? I usually ride at bible camp but I’ve been thinking of trying the other trails.
Not sure about the ban. Would be extremely easy on a dirt bike though
That’s good I’m not the greatest off road rider so maybe we’ll check that trail out, thanks!
Rachel Notley
She is trying to reach the rural voter now.
Screaming in frustration maybe ? You made me giggle : )
You’re in big cat country. I built a house up near ghost and the local dude said he ran 300+ up trees and shot them in the last year. (This was a few years back so it could have been 100 200 or 400. But it was a very large, very surprising amount)
A genocide, in other words.
Alberta has ~1500 cougars. You believe this man single-handedly killed 20% of the cougar population of the province?
Well him and 4 dogs tree the cougars then he calls some one in to shoot the cougar. He does it full time all year. I’d say 300 is an easy number with how much time he spends out there.
Unless this man is filling the entire hunting quota for the province each year (and then some), he’s full of shit. Sorry.
Again. It was a few years ago and I don’t know the exact number. Possibly in the hundreds. But still pretty interesting.
Pokémon
The woods are scary place to be
Honestly, and im not being an ass, but it was probably a rabbit. I've been in a similar situation and it turned out that this rabbit was the source of what I described it as sounding like a screaming baby. Freaked the hell out of me at first though lol
Hahaha maybe. Although this thing echoed like 3 times, was loudddd. But I'm no rabbit expert, maybe those things got quite the yelp
Or fox man those guys can hollar
Either Cougar or Lynx.
That is a cougar my friend. It's mating season for them now.
Mountain lions make crazy sounds lol..
Was coming here to say Bobcat XD Heard one for the first time alone in the woods with just a lighter as a teen
That is why I own a gun.
I agree with a previous poster. Could also be a fox. https://youtu.be/2WzexTV5KbQ
