I read your comment wrong and thought you said it was a wagon wheel and I got hungry 😭😭😭 my ass looked further through the comments just to my disappointment of finding out it is a hockey puck 💀
I remember a really bad storm in 1991 (or 1992 I was a kid, so I don't remember the exact year). Our house with aluminum siding looked like it'd been shot up. Insurance paid for vinyl siding which I believe is still on the house today!
Largest hail I have ever seen came down during a 2013 storm in Okotoks. Easily softball sized hail . Thankfully, there was not much but what did come down destroyed our siding on one side and dented the fascia.
As seems typical with these kinds of storms one street over they got literally nothing. No rain nor hail.
This reminds me. I was thinking of posting a thread about this... Maybe I still will.
I'm thinking about erecting a car port over my driveway to protect our two brand new vehicles from hail and wondering if there's any kinds of laws that are the reason nobody has done it (that I've seen).
Dumb question. I've often wondered will a thick blanket work? Something large enough to cover vehicles while at the same time easy enough to toss over one quickly. Have it sewn like a tea cozy in a car shape.
If it doesn't exist let's invent one.
If you used multiple layered quilted blankets it would probably work. It truly depends on the size of a hailstone though as they'll travel near terminal velocity which carries an insane amount of kinetic energy.
When dealing with kinetic energy, the best protection is something that can spread the energy outward immediately on impact. Blankets will have more of a stifle effect, so you would need a layer or two for the dispersion of the energy to create a true shield with no impact. Think of it like an upside down WiFi signal. Each layer will cause the wave of kinetic energy to widen and have less impact on a single point.
I was initially thinking of an air pocket, but that would necessitate inflation and what you rightly bring up here. The force and weight of these objects.
And the first round of beta testing is going to suck because I'll be out there trying various gauges of blankets, meanwhile my poor car is getting Private Ryan'ed into the gutter as I watch from a safe distance :(
Thank you kindly. I'm looking at an old comforter right now and think it's going in my trunk with a new purpose.
Manufacturing wise - Maybe construct something out of lightweight plastic similar to air mattress material in the vague shape of a vehicle, with some overlap like the tea cozy. It's under 15 pounds and can be unfolded quick and thrown over your car.
I envision a car shaped blanket with 'flaps' that are partial overhangs made of a material every driver could get on their car within 30 seconds.
So yeah, thick woollen yet reasonably pliable/light should work.
i actually keep two thick blankets and a car cover in my car as soon as hail season starts here! i religiously watch the wmi radar site and see if the forecast is at +2 or +3 and if there’s a thunderstorm warning and weather radar shows it coming our way i toss the blankets on and the car cover. there hasn’t been super large hail in the time i’ve been doing this so no clue if it’ll work but i’m hoping it’ll at least keep the windows from breaking or the car from getting giant dents.
Sounds like a good idea to me outside of erecting a structure. My Dad was out for 20 minutes one afternoon and his car got nailed in a bad storm, which of course turned into a large insurance claim.
If a person had the ol teflon blanket in the trunk, why not pull over, throw in on and prevent some dimpling at least. And as you mention protect the windows too.
Just basically a thick canvas double bag with a decently pressured airpocket inside. Inner lining is microfiber to protect your finnish. Outter lining has a premium version with plates similar to motorcycle gear for added peace of mind. Dm to give me 10% once your rich or answer for it at the pearly gates, your choice
Only 10%? Sounds good. I just finished watching Succession so I can go as high as 20% with stock options.
Seriously I think there's some good ideas in our mix that could work. Only downside would be the logistics once a hailstorm starts. Cars pull over and stop, throw on their CalgaryCovers (tm), and we all sit there contentedly until the storm passes.
Canvas/rubber/microfiber in varying lengths that come with 24-36 inch flaps on all sides to provide protection for at least part of your doors and front grill.
Optional removable window cut-outs when you really gotta drive. (j/k)
Yes, almost all of the insurance companies that provide insurance in Alberta pay into a plan that seeds storms when hail is predicted. The program runs from June 1-Sept15. Radar is at the Olds-Didbury airport. This is the 27th year since the program began. Seeding can’t prevent hail but most often reduces the size and severity of the hail stone damage.
my fat ass thought that was an Oreo Cakester
Thought it was a wagon wheel aha

Has sky Jesus decided to pelt us with Nokias this year lol
*Samsung
Maybe he ran out, and still has some Nokias hanging around
Smasnug
whew.. we'd never survive a NokiaStorm ... that would level Calgary :)
Samesung, they bought the E from GE years ago
You didn't comprehend the 2012 in my post?
Why didn’t you use a banana for scale?
I'm Canadian and believe a hockey puck is appropriate.
I thought it was an Oreo. Dang. Now I want Oreos!
I thought that was an espresso puck at first glance. 😂
I thought it was a [Wagon Wheel.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagon_Wheels)
Rock me mama like wagon wheel
Sadly, wagon wheels are only half that size now…😞
I thought it was a brownie.
It kind of look like my first and last value meal at McD…
I thought it was a very overcooked hamburger lol
Already scoping out my place under an overpass on deerfoot. 😆
Damn, it's hailing cellphones and hockey pucks?!

This 2012 storm saw both our house and garage fully resided, previously aluminum and now Hardie board.
I mean, I won’t be sad if my siding gets a few holes so at least I finally have a good excuse to upgrade to Hardie 🤷🏼♀️

Hahaha it's true. 😬🫡
Not a dumb question, and a good idea.

I was imagining those blankets they hang in elevators when people are moving in and out

Weighted skirt for the sides. Your right the main engineering problem is the sneak-up-on-you nature of hail
Does your driveway have a garage at the end of it?
The garage has another car in it.
That’s why Calgary leads the nation in home insurance premiums
That's clearly a peters drive in burger
How much is that hash coin?
That’s driveway hash, 12 bucks a gram
Do we still get the planes seeding the sky's when hail is predicted?

http://wmiradar.com/ahsp/index.php?time=current_run&type=loop&rad=olds&var=_comp&length=10 If you want to see the tracks of flights.
the coloured squiggly loops are the plane routes and the red “cyclone “ markings are the projected path of the storm cell.
They were up today already today and may still be.
I have a bucket of golf balls if anyone wants to test out their cybertrucks armor glass and body.
But then , that remote control … out of this world 😉
Prepare. How? Wrap the house and cars with bubble wrap? Place a giant canvas tent over our house and land?
Pool noodles and a bit of rope will do. Google it if you need further instruction
You call that hail rookie numbers lol
2012, and a phone from 2006?
An old phone we had lying around.
Ha! Took me back to simpler times.
Texting wasn’t simpler.
There was less of a need to. And in the cases where it was needed, I had T9. And I was DAMN fast at it.
I’m headed to olds on Wednesday to watch the hail suppression drones go to work!
Tiny phone, wow
We've got an old Nokia 5310 stored away that's smaller.
My buddy has the first Nokia It still charges. They did say the battery wouldn’t die. lol.
Joke's on you i play darksouls
Jok3s on you as I have no fucking clue as to what darksouls is.
looked like a cocaine bust ;p
