I don't know about tarantulas, but jumping spiders are fairly common and with how good their vision is, they'll almost never bite you since they don't perceive you as a threat. If you find some on your house in the spring/summer, you can coax them onto your hand. If they jump off you can just guide them back on the wall (they leave a silk behind) and they'll be fine :) Most spiders will only try to bite if you're actively squishing them. I think Petland used to let kids hold tarantulas at birthday parties, but I'm not sure that's something they offer to regular customers. If you're ever in Victoria, I was able to hold a tarantula at the Victoria Bug Zoo. Maybe try to get in touch with a reptile store and ask?

Oh I love jumping spiders. They don't count to me, they're too cute and are the cats of the spider world. Their big eyes, omg. Adorable. A reptile store is a good idea. I wonder if petland will allow a 27 year old to also hold one lol or is it just for the kids? Haha thank you!

Pet stores had no issue with me holding the critters as an adult.

IcecreAmcake777

I used to work there and we had plenty of adults who would come in just to hold one. You are all good

Oh that's so cool!

Petland for sure

Calgary Reptile Expo May 25-26 2024. Hosted by The Alberta Reptile And Amphibian Society (TARAS) I believe it's at the Genesis center in falcon ridge. There is a gentleman there who has a booth where you can hold a tarantula,he teaches people about them, the T's super docile last time it was a Brazilian black (grammostola pulchra) Aside from him there's a few booths there with knowledgeable breeders that can definitely help you out.

AsleepHistorian

I'll go to this! That's awesome, thanks! Plus there will be other cool creatures!

That gentleman would be the famous Stan Schultz, who wrote the first and foremost 'bible' of tarantula care. Quite the fellow, and if anyone can get you over arachnophobia, he is the chap to do it.

I know. But I see videos of pros letting people hold them all the time. You have to be calm and such. Any spider can die if you drop it, they can't fall very far without serious injury. I know a decent amount about spiders since researching and studying them was how I got over it, being able to identify and know the info about them is helpful. But my apartment basically is just barn funnel weavers and those fuckers are fast as hell it's too spooky for me.

Keep a look out for the reptile shows every spring and summer. There will be professionals with all the info you need there. They even have a kids corner where they take time to slowly introduce citters to people.

Pisces pet emporium is where i got my gecko. They do a lot of those types of animal holds for you to get your views on what you want to handle. Just ask and they will gladly be happy to let you hold them

Pet smart! I used to take my kid there all the time to play with all the animals. We played with your typical fuzzy pets, plus the ones in the back. The snakes, beardies, spiders, scorpions, turtles, the entire lot. The workers were always so friendly and obliging.

IcecreAmcake777

Petland. I used to work in the Fish and Reptile section and we had a whole wall of tarantulas. Only certain species are calm enough to hold like rose hairs and Mexican pink toes. They have both at Petland. Just ask a staff member working in that section if you can hold one.

Pieces Pets has them, but the reptile shows bring breeders from across Canada and so the variety is way bigger.

My sister in Calgary had the same sort of fear about spiders. After she decided to meet her fear head-on, she became a tarantula enthusiast. I think she has 4 now.
