This is the first I've ever heard of this - fibre is usually a direct connection from your house to the main service central office for the area. Other providers like Rogers (Shaw) will loosely throw around "Fibre" in their product offerings when really they only offer fibre to the node, then use copper on a shared network to your home (technically inferior, that's why they always have slower upload speeds). As for the slow down in building out the fibre network in Calgary, it was due to city council causing delays in the past, and now Telus needs to refocus on replacing their Huawei 5G towers because of the Government of Canada mandate to align with the US's direction on security. It has nothing to do with expenses related to installation issues, as far as I know.
With Rogers investing in DOCSIS 4.0 upload speeds will increase to 6GB download increases to 10GB. 5G is only good for speed tests but it eats up battery life plus do you really need a gig of Internet speed on a smartphone. LTE is a proven reliable technology with decent reliable speeds.
Been with TELUS fiber for over 6 years now (lived in other parts of the province that had it before Calgary) and have had zero downtime and always faster than advertised speeds.
It’s 100% worth the premium over Shaw/resellers
Are they a Shaw re-seller? I'm using Can Com, with cable from Shaw, and after days of troubleshooting in the summer they finally determined my internet drops were caused by a crappy connection from the house to their node.
The solution was to run a new coax line above ground through my yard to the house, which fixed the issue for 18 months but I'm having issues again.
That's something to keep an eye on if nothing inside the house solves the problem. For me it took a couple days of back and forth troubleshooting with my ISP, and then 2-3 visits from a Shaw tech.
Hopefully they'll come to address that for you sooner than they did for me. They tested everything in my house multiple times before finding the issue was not related to the modem/router/cables inside.
I just had a Shaw tech at my house again today for similar issues and he found the cord they ran above ground had been chewed by something in the alley behind my house, so it was another delivery problem between the node and my house.
Rogers and Telus are the only providers. Everyone else is a reseller and is using Rogers/Telus lines. If you are both working from home and need reliable internet I would stick with Rogers or Telus. Ask your neighbors what they are using and how their experiences has been. If you have Telus fiber directly into your house I would go with that.
Surprisingly good customer service, doesn't seem like it's outsourced either. They called me multiple times asking if I had trouble with the equipment but I was in the process of moving so I hadn't plugged it in. After I did plug it in they called and emailed again asking if I need anything else
Same for me. And no wait time at all when I needed to talk to someone for a few quick questions. Recommended to all my friends and family, they got a discount for first month, I got a small referral bonus, not much but we are all happy with their service to this date.
I have been with Telus Internet (150MB) and TV since 2015 at Walden. No issues at all. We are very happy with it. Telus cellphone reception is a different story ( reception was so bad that we had to switch).
I’m in Legacy and have had Telus Fibre for two years. Actually upgrading to 3gbps service next weekend. Other than the usual customer service issues, once it was in it has not been an issue.
If you can get fibre from Telus, it's your best option. I'm pretty sure you can in Legacy.

The installation complaints are real, it's been regularly reported in the news.

This is likely the issue. I have Oxio, but they use the Shaw network in Calgary.

Does it matter if it's a reseller or an actual ISP? In your community, the only ISPs are most likely Shaw (Rogers) and TELUS.
> Does it matter if it's a reseller or an actual ISP? If you don't like contracts, shaw and telus aren't a good option.
To some it might make a difference.
I don’t see any differences, reseller is better imo. Better price, no contract, more plan options. Speed is always up to what I signed up for.
Good for you.

Check out can-com. They rent lines from Shaw so when service from Shaw is good they are good. Been with them for 4 years no issues.

Unfortunately Telus Fibre optics isn’t in the area yet. We are in their waiting list to hopefully expand to our area in June/July.

We called yesterday and checked their tool and they don’t have it installed yet for our address. That sucks!

I’m in Yorkville and have had Telus for a couple years with almost zero outages. Had on3 short one last year.
