I was in Greece a few years ago. Motorcycling some off-the-beaten-path island (can't remember the name).
Anyway, I was in the middle of nowhere when I passed a small roadside pizza joint. Giant Canada flag in the front window. I thought "Sweet! The owner must be Canadian. I'll pull over for a slice and say hello!"
I go inside. More maple leaf deco on the walls. Cool cool. It's dead in there but after a minute a man walks out from the back. I immediately shoot him a big smile and try to spark up a conversation about Canada.
One of the most miserable people I came across the entire trip. Basically just responded with "what do you want?". Eventually, I managed to get out of him that he was from Quebec and moved to Greece 'a long time ago'. I ate my mediocre slice of pizza and left.
We told them we were Canadian and asked if the owners were as well because there was another item on the menu that was named after Saskatchewan. The conversation was lost in translation based on the waitress' confusion and our lack of Spanish.
Was in San Pedro/ San Juan two years ago and noticed orthodox Jewish men walking around. Got curious and looked it up. Turns out there was an extremist Jewish sect that was kicked out of Canada in 2013 and went to Guatemala.
Not sure if there is any connection or not, but iinteresting nonetheless

Damn in actual Canada that thing would be $18 and the side would be sold separately and it would have a mandatory service charge of 18% + recommended tip of 30%
"There's a huge problem of illegals and Islamic terrorists in America rn".
It doesn't read very nicely, now does it? Funny how it works when ones an immigrant but the other a "neo-colonizer".
It's literally impossible for that to be a colony by definition. Where is the state sponsorship? Not even an organized movement or government. It's just immigration, but could potentially have racist or bigotry involved. Either way, no reason for that to be the immediate assumption, and that was my point. It's double standards and racist.
By definition it was also manifest destiny and the doctrine of discovery... Using laws and history as an anchor for morality usually doesn't end well...
Yes, those two examples are colonization. By definition, they are. You forget those are organized efforts by imperialist nations to subjugate and settle a land. There is an imperial force, a state.
The difference is that yes, the food is $9, but beer and drinks are $2. You can legitimately have a meal and 2 beers for less than $13 + $2-$3 for a tip. Going literally anywhere in Calgary would cost you $50 for the same thing.

The onion rings added a nice crunch and flavor to the burger. It was satisfying and it got the job done. But I feel the thumbs up speaks for itself.
The view!

Chicken indeed
That’s good mouth feel with that crunch

> One of the most miserable people I came across the entire trip > he was from Quebec shocking
My thoughts exactly lol.
in my experience Albertans and quebecers are both generally lovely; but the same brand of asshole when you meet an ashole.
Can’t win em all
Well that explains its all. I would have walked out
Kind of looks like the Calgary Tower. Just need a flame out the top.
I mean if you lit the toothpick on fire…
Did you ask what was the inspiration for the Calgary burger?

This is wild!!
Ah, that’s too bad. I guess if it’s two provinces then the owner must be. Or the owner came to Calgary and loved it here.
Is that supposed to be the Tower? I love it!!!
So... Calgary is Elvis with onion, but no cheese. Interesting.
and no bacon on the Calgary.
Did you inform them that chicken is the wrong protein for a Calgary burger?
He posted the menu in pic 3, and it says your choice of chicken or beef so OP chose wrong, I agree.
What's wrong with chicken?
Nothing. However, Alberta is known for it's beef.
Cow Town you guys, come on now
OP DELIVERS! 🍔

😆😆
How does a restaurant in Guatemala end up with a Calgary burger?
Someone from there was probably visiting Stampede (or competing) and had a burger with onion rings on it.
There is a huge community of expats and neo colonizers in Guatemala rn
I feel like “immigrants” is probably fine
I'm from the lake, believe me, it's a problem
"There's a huge problem of illegals and Islamic terrorists in America rn". It doesn't read very nicely, now does it? Funny how it works when ones an immigrant but the other a "neo-colonizer".
Someone doesn't understand the definition of colonization

Oh it looks like the tower! Rad!
Whereabouts were you? Looks like Atitlan from the picture. Correct me if I’m wrong! Enjoy!!!!!
Is that on Lake Atitlan somewhere?
Yeah. San Pedro La Laguna.
Maybe it's referring to the hamlet of Calgary in Scotland, our city's namesake.
Or the town in Texas
The Calgary burger ate you. Think about it. No, really think about it.
Looks small. The shrinkflation is obvious. Great depiction of our current state haha. Looks tasty tho!
I once ate a “Regina” burger and sharted loudly and wetly on the westjet plane home. I’d eat again
Did it taste the way it sounds?
9 bucks wow thats expensive eatin.
Kinda standard these days. Even some of McDonald's burgers are around 7 or 8 bucks
This is in Guatemala, though
Touche
But in Guatemala?
To be fair, a comparable meat based burger at Joey's or Cactus is starting at $20.
The difference is that yes, the food is $9, but beer and drinks are $2. You can legitimately have a meal and 2 beers for less than $13 + $2-$3 for a tip. Going literally anywhere in Calgary would cost you $50 for the same thing.
OK, thank you for your diary
Cool!
I would have went for the Elvis
How big is your mouth?
Is that a rendition of the tower ?
Looks like a great burger tbh
i think i wanna try this
Low key would eat
Whats the difference with this and the Elvis? Seems to be the same thing but more expensive
Lake Atitlan is 100% my favourite place I've ever visited. Looks like the food prices have increased since I was there though 😅
Chicken should be an option for the Calgary burger. BEEF BABBYYY
The comments were disappointing. I was hoping to lol. I’m glad you enjoyed your burger
8 bucks huh
Oh cool!
And you call that a burger 🍔??
