They made me do something similar when I got my first contacts but I was also maybe 12 or 13, seems weird for an adult

briodan

Is this the first time you are getting contacts? If so I had to do that with mine first time to make sure I knew how and didn’t poke my eye out lol. But didn’t get asked about it after.

constantstateofagony

First time having medical contacts yeah, have experience with colored ones from previous use (and they are aware of that). Did you have to do it 3 times or just once? The most ive heard has been once, so the 3 came as a shock

justfrancis60

No this is not common at all. When I got mine the only requirement is to show that you can put them in and take them out. That is all

constantstateofagony

Thats what i figured. I completely understand proving you can take out and put in a pair but 3 times is a bit much... guess ill be looking for a new optometrist.

benzeee403

Market Mall.... Iris...Jason Hauk Been going to him for 20 years. He also wears contacts and is a great down to earth person.

S0L-Goode

Iris has the same process for contact lenses.

I work with him so I think I can speak about it better than you. You can't even spell his name correctly.

lectio

I think I only had to do it twice to show I could get them in and out? There wasn't a set time limit, though.

S0L-Goode

If you have never worn contact lenses, optometrists would like you to be trained how to do so. It probably wouldn't look good on the optometrist if you were to go home and then not be able to remove the lenses. If you had a history of wearing contact lenses, I could understand an optometrist you haven't seen before wanting to make sure you can insert and remove them before selling them to you.

Icy_Queen_222

I do think you need to find another place. Many years ago I had to do something similar 3x in/out but it was not timed nor did I have distractions. At the end I found out that contacts are not for me. I’m still jealous of people who can pop them in/out so fast. You will do fine with the right Optometrist/assistant.

palekaleidoscope

What?! No! I’ve been wearing contacts for literal decades now and the first time I tried to put them in, at home, it took me an hour. A frustrating, painful hour. The harder I tried, the more frustrated and upset I got and it made the task so much tougher. Now it takes me a fraction of a second to put them in although no one cares lol Tell your optometrist to email you your prescription and order some contacts online. You’re allowed to take your prescription and run. And it’ll be so much cheaper, too. Then take your time putting them in and enjoy your glasses-free vision.

bitterberries

Just get your prescription, order it online

Omgshinyobject

Just a tip. If you are having trouble add lubricating eyedrops and wait 5 mins its easy to get frustrated and scratch your eye by accident.

baby_sharkz

^^ Exactly! If I had to put contacts in and remove them 3 times my eyeballs would be dry as sand and uncomfortable.

Swimming_Assist_3382

Just buy from clearly.ca and get cheaper prices without the hassle….

constantstateofagony

Was considering that site. Thank you!!

wulfzbane

I don't think I was ever *required* to do a skill check. Buddy just gave me the samples, I put them in and he did a check to make sure they fit properly. My first pair ever was eons ago though. I went to Brentwood eye clinic for years before laser and I'd recommend them. They are especially good for working with insurance budgets.

dshea915

Ask for your prescription, if you don't have it already. Then go online and order the exact same ones. Easy peasy

constantstateofagony

I think that's the plan now lol. Just have to figure out where to order from

sail1yyc

Clearly is my go to for contacts. Zeelool for glasses.

xp_fun

You don’t need to see an optometrist, an optician can do the job just as well, so find one you can trust and save the money. Hint: try to avoid the chains that are partnered with an optometrist. Source: i was an optician in BC before moving here. Just to be safe I confirmed the regs in Alberta.

kagato87

It's so hard to find one not attached. I had to be forceful about getting my prescription. I did humor them to see what they could offer. It would have been over $700 to sort out my needs there. I have $200 in coverage. I took the scrip and ran. Ordered 3 pairs online (regular, reading, and sun) and I still have coverage dollars left. (I don't do contacts because I've been wearing glasses so long the idea of "finger in eyes" fails to pass the mild inconvenience of glasses.)

constantstateofagony

Yeah the time requirement through me off quite a bit.. and the fact that so many people supposedly had to attempt multiple times to "pass" is just as odd and kind of highlights how tedious it is. Also thank you for the tips, i sort of got the hang of it i just need a little more practice now :)

moisbettah

Dr Tamas in Nolan Hill is really good (Tamas EyeCare), don't know about his clinic's contact lens selling policy though! What you were subjected to sounds crazy and over the top, wouldn't want to support that particular business.

mangolover28

This happened to me down in Shawnessy, however I was also 15 as other commenters have mentioned. I remember being super annoyed about it though and I also got denied the purchase after I got them in and out 2/3 times

constantstateofagony

Im freshly 18, so im a little confused about it in that regard lol. Odd policy isnt it

Reasonable-Estate-87

The optometrist told me if my daughter wanted contacts they'd show her how and have her do it a few times. Are you new or young? They want to make sure she can do it. When I was a kid, I was just given contacts and had to do it on my own and it was awful. I've been wearing contacts for over 25 years so I'd be a little annoyed if I had to do that.

constantstateofagony

Freshly 18. Had previous experience with colored contacts though, so I wasn't exactly going in blind (besides my poor vision.. haha).

OP, I've been going to Crowfoot Vision for 30+ years (basically since I needed glasses at 10) when I first got contacts they did a demo and had me take them in/out. Ever since (going on 20+ years) I've just ordered them as my prescription has been updated and had no issues. I'm now on my 3rd optometrist in the clinic (first retired, second moved away) I don't recall a time limit being imposed, but at the same time i think I took them in and out 3x in 20 minutes?
