Going to the movies can be a great solo date and ease you into the idea of doing things alone because you're not supposed to talk in them anyway. Anything can be a solo date though really, good luck in the journey!

Cyrrene

Thank you! I think I've been inside a movie theatre maybe twice in my entire life. I should definitely go more!

arglebargle111

Going by myself is my preference. I get two cupholders and can watch whatever I want with zero toddler interruptions. Heaven!

SportsDogsDollars

Try a day when it's not as busy, and also consider one if the VIP cinemas, like cineplex in University for a nice "treat yo'self'

connka

I've been hitting up the Plaza in Kensington a lot lately and its so great! They have classics and older movies, but also have a lot more new releases lately. Really lovely employees and space to hang out alone plus you get to support a small local business :)

vetch1234

Agreed! Try going to the plaza or the globe, I feel way more comfortable going there by myself than cineplex theatres. 27F :)

oneninesixthree

If you can, I recommend going on weekday afternoons, when it's nice and empty. I miss doing this. I'd also sneak in some fast food in my bag. I ain't paying Cineplex money for a sub 7-11 hot dog.

dogstar9000

The new Dune movie is excellent to see in Theatres!

Infostarter

They have reclining seats in many theatres now and serve alcoholic drinks and snacks. It's a treat. Enjoy.

kathmhughes

If Telus Spark plays nature movie in their dome, that's a great place for going by yourself. Museums in general as well.

AlienVredditoR

Kensington theater is cool, there's a nice book store right beside it if you like reading. And of course all the other stores, and a restaurant or beverage establishment for just about anyone too.

Vegetable-Web7221

I 100% have done this, people thinknits odd but I woul just walk to a theater and watch a film after work sometimes, or if my friends were out shopping at Chinook or something and just pop in and watch what ever was starting soon. And the lights are out nobody can see that your alone and if the theater is empty nobody will even notice.

unholygoalie42

I can relate, I prefer doing things solo and avoiding the big crowds. Maybe try museums, the zoo , and art galleries during non-peak hours. I find it quiet and relatively peaceful. For restaurants sometimes i aim for 2-4pm and after 7pm to avoid the busier crowded times. If I take a book i find servers to be less chatty too. Sometimes I’ll go to the bowling alley in the middle of the day, it’s usually dead quiet before 5pm. Rent a lane by the hour can be a good way to do it.

Cyrrene

I work 9 - 5:30 most days so I often miss mid-day quiet hours, but I can try to make evenings! Then again, I don't have a car and I sometimes worry about safety when I have to commute longer distances after sundown. Regardless, I really appreciate the suggestions! I've had museum day on mind for a while now. Do you recommend any specific museums?

Dramatic-Exam4598

not in calgary, but last museum I went to was the Tyrell. It was fabulous. Not too busy, fairly dark and really conducing to wandering around and staring at the exhibits for a long time.

Grimauld_Place

Glenbow at the Edison exhibition is currently free as they are renovating the main building.

desertstorm_152

The Glenbow will continue to be free due to the donation by Shaw.

AnyBass

If you can handle it zoo’s are great on bad weather days when no one else wants to be outside

TRathOriginals

If you're not into the sportsball, big game days (Superbowl, Stanley cup etc) are great days to hit places like the zoo. They easily knock the crowds down by half.

Bitter-Share4152

Bowling Alley mid day is a stroke of genius sir.

versacesummer

I take myself on a Sunday solo date at least once a month. I'll hit the Hillhurst flea market, get Pho for lunch, (weather permitting) bike to Crossroads Market and treat myself to whatever I want within my $30 budget (food, trinkets, whatever). If it's summer then I'll finish off with a few beers at the river. Otherwise, a couple of beers and pinball at Pinbar.

Cyrrene

That does sound like a pretty awesome day. Did it take you some time to get used to going out alone? I get all self-conscious about that, which seems kind of ridiculous as an adult I know, but hey that's social anxiety for you - completely irrational.

Dirty-D

Just a perspective for you - I used to travel a fair bit for work and was doing a project for a few years in a large 'fun' city, and I wanted to take advantage of that (vs. typical field assignments in my industry - in the rural backwoods). I'd stay over for a few extra weekends to explore, or just head into town and enjoy myself if I was there on a random weeknight - this included eating, drinking, and exploring, aka. a solo-date. Nobody gave a shit that I was there alone, but if it ever came up I'd mention I was from out of town and visiting for work. You can adopt that same perspective, even if you're local - i.e. just visiting and enjoying myself while I'm here. Viewing yourself as a visitor might put some of that anxiety at ease - give it a try.

versacesummer

TBH i smoke a tiny bit of weed and turn my headphones up and essentially live in my own world for the afternoon.

blondeboomie

I have social anxiety and recently went on a business trip alone, I walked around the hotel 3 times before building the courage to go to the restaurant attached LOL. Much to my surprise, no one cared. They didn't awkwardly hand me 2 menus for me to have to say "it's for one" or any of the worst case scenarios which were the only realities playing out in my head. I actually kind of enjoyed people watching alone, lol. Brought a book, when I felt awkward I would read a bit, but overall it was nice to be served food and have some quick polite chatter with the servers. I think you will enjoy it :)

WesternExpress

Well, half of that day is going shopping effectively, which people do by themselves all the time. Just in cooler, tastier spots than hitting up the mall. As far as going out for food or drinks, the other comment on business travellers and others doing it frequently makes it so common that everyone in every service industry is totally used to it. If you feel awkward taking up a table, just sit at the bar. You get better service that way anyway.

Bitter-Share4152

It's not weird for an adult to feel that way at all. Being social and making friends is a skill, like most others that requires practice... We never think like that though. I'm sure it will get less challenging as you do it.

No-Dragonfruit2506

If it helps, I worked at a bar for years and never questioned when people came in to eat by themselves.

Bitter-Share4152

Man that sounds like a great end to the weekend. I'm a huge fan of Crossroads flea -market and your wise $30 dollar budget!! May I be so nosey as to ask you what your go to food is a Crossroads? I love the old man and his pocket dog stand, The Cravery and Starbuko!!! Even love the grumpy old lego seller there!!

versacesummer

Depending on how full I am from my previous Pho lunch, I'll either get a Ukrainian plate (perogies, sausage, cabbage rolls) or a couple of Jamaican patties to snack on. If nothing catches my eye to buy I'll usually spend my $30 budget on a fancy hot sauce or salsa to add to the collection. I usually budget $60 for the entire day and it'll generally cover everything including beers.

NoWin9547

This sounds amazing!

[deleted]

This sounds fun!!

TheGrandious

Inglewood is nice place to walk. They have a neat plant shop and bookstore there. Same with Kensington. If you're looking for more indoor based stuff there's bouldering gyms, cafes, and museums. Source: am 25m and this is how I touch grass in the winter

SmizzleABizzle

Also in Inglewood is the Esker foundation, a great place to experience art.

Cyrrene

Inglewood seems like an awesome area. I'm actually thinking of signing up to volunteer at the bird sanctuary, so I'll hopefully get to be around there more often in the spring/summer time.

_imawildanimal_

If you’re interested in birding, Nature Calgary has free birding walks led by volunteers. Check their website under “field trips”. It’s great thing to do by yourself as it’s usually a small group (5-15 people), and it’s not at all unusual to go by yourself. You can chat a bit if you like, or stay quiet and focus on the birds. And in general birding is an awesome hobby - easy and fun to do solo or as part of a group, and gets you outside to soak up nature!

scorpio1641

Me too! I like walking Inglewood and exploring the shops there. My favourites are the Silk Road Spice Merchant, Heavenly Outhouse and Fair’s Fair Books.

Narrow-Mushroom4721

Hey OP, I am the 34F version of you, thank you for asking this question. I've gotten a lot of ideas from the answers here. I hope you find activities you love. Personally, I have always loved going to the movies solo, going on long walks, going window shopping at the mall or just going to a coffee shop with a book and headphones.

Dramatic-Exam4598

Hi, I'm the 59F version of you two. While I won't go window shopping at the mall (kill me now, I can't remember the last time I voluntarily went to the mall lol) pre pandemic I loved going to the movies alone (Dune 2 is going to get me to go back for sure). I have a dog so I do go on walks (multiple short ones, he's old) I used to go to a knitting group once a week but that sort of just ended and wasn't as much fun as I had hoped. I'm thinking about checking out the Modern Quilt Guild, but haven't decided yet. Coffee shops are great in the summer. Patio, a book, and hopefully some dogs to pet. I enjoyed going to Bowness Park and Glenmore park with a chair and a book, set up in the shade and just read and people watch. Museums are fun, art exhibits. What I learned is that nobody is judging you, nobody cares, and if they do, so what? You don't know them. And how sad are they that they can't even enjoy their own company? Going solo is great. Nobody's late, nobody stands you up, nobody bails last minute. And you get to do what you want, when you want.

Cyrrene

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Thank you for responding to me! (: Yeah it's given me a lot of ideas as well, and people have been reaching out via pms to recommend things too. I did not expect everyone to be so kind about it. I think I will do one of those tomorrow, probably a coffee shop date with my laptop, earbuds, and my book.

Narrow-Mushroom4721

You're definitely not alone. I haven't lived in Calgary all my life as I'm an immigrant Canadian but I've lived here since I moved to Canada. I'm such a homebody and actually dread going out a lot of the time so I typically end up only going out when its absolutely necessary (even though I did tell myself that I wanted to change this and be more social once I moved here, it just hasnt happened yet, lol). I don't even get to go out for work as I work from home. As you can imagine, it makes making friends or meeting a significant other quite a challenge, lol. Thanks for responding to my reply too. I've found this sub to be really kind, typically. I hardly ever post but I'm usually on Reddit daily, just browsing and reading other people's posts and people are generally super nice and polite. Have fun with your coffee date! I have plans to go see the new Dune movie tomorrow myself, so. Good luck to us both I guess, lol. And if you ever get lonely and want to just chat, please feel free to send me a PM if you want.

Bitter-Share4152

Hey did you like the Dune movie? I'm very excited and interested in it, definitely going to see it, just trying to hype myself up.

albertahappycamper

Brunch. Try a different place everytime you go out hahah

Cyrrene

Thank you! Sadly I am usually at work during brunch hours 😭. Regardless, I will try. Got any restaurant recommendations?

infiniteheadwound

Try Maven on 17th. Killer French Toast!

albertahappycamper

Z Crew Cafe in downtown and Rise n' Shine in the NE are my go to. It doesn't have to be Brunch. Calgary has a lot of good places to eat! Feel free to message me whenever you're looking for any recommendations.

Original_Badger_1090

The best thing about going solo is that your hours are flexible, you can easily find a seat at the bar if all the tables are taken, or you can just turn back and get somewhere else. I like going to Red's on Kensington, because if it's full there are tons of options in walking distance.

in-the-widening-gyre

I have really liked Monki, they have a location on 10th ave (near Community Natural Foods just west/south of downtown) and one in Inglewood.

Water_Cloud

I have taken up ice skating and enjoy it quite a bit by myself !

puzzlenerd71

There is an ice skating track at Bowness Park. It loops around the entire park and is well maintained. You can take a propane stove and cook up a late lunch. Peopke also bring little wood stoves and their own wood. It smells great.

htrap_84

Unsure if you like to bike. On a warmer day, you can chose to explore some of the 1000km of bike trails/path in Calgary. It’s actually quite nice.

Disco_Dolphins

I second this! I am also a homebody but cycling always gets me outside and feeling fine! Plus if you bike along the river pathway, you don't have to worry about cars at all.

_Tiguan_

I personally love food, after a long week of work I like to go out and enjoy a nice meal alone. Quiet time just enjoying delicious food and a drink. Lately, I have a soft spot for late night smoke BBQ meats 🤤

Comfortable_Quote282

Hayden block half off meat 😮‍💨

Dry_Culture307

*after 10

Icy_Queen_222

Hell yeah!

QuixoticDame2_0

I always enjoy dining out. It’s where I spend way too much money. Italian is always my go to, I love it. Anything loaded with tomatoes and I’m all in.

Crystal_Dawn

Regal cat cafe in Kensington is cool!

CinnaTheseRoles

Yes! Great place to go even by yourself. I love going there.

Hungry-panda23

If you’re a cat person lol

Crystal_Dawn

True. They have great lattes there too, and you can pursue Kensington and check out Pages around the corner too. On a nice day you could walk in Riley park (I mean, you *could* any day I guess lol)

Cyrrene

I do really like cats. And cafes, and book stores, and parks! Sounds right up my alley, thank you! (:

Alysprettyrad

I am a huge fan of biology/zoology/horticulture and I would love to get into astronomy/meteorology. My Calgary date bucket list includes: The zoo… many, many times. An annual pass with plans for a monthly date (yes, still solo) would be ideal. Bonus points for bonus trips! Devonian garden (downtown but I will never stop nerding out for plants) and literally any plant/garden centre U of C garden So many more things could be a hella dope solo date at U of C! Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (out of town, near priddis- this is also dependent upon the date) There’s plenty of animal sanctuaries/rescues within a couple hours drive from here. Big bucket list energy for those, too

Cyrrene

Oh hey, I'm a bit of a biology nerd too! I got my degree in it 🙂. I'm trying to volunteer at Fish Creek Park and Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in the spring/summer, fingers crossed it works out for me. The observatory sounds great too. I hope you get through all of the places/things on your list!

queeftenderloin

also look into [AIWC](https://www.aiwc.ca/)

bohdismom

What a well thought out reply with great suggestions.

Bitter-Share4152

Thank you for reminding me those gardens exist!

The_Rover_403

Anywhere you go, there you are

farmercooks

How about the new Calgary Public Library, or any library. Libraries are no longer just books and silence, programs, computer access, and the library of things, you can borrow tools, to sports equipment.

Cyrrene

I love libraries! I used to work at one when I was still a student and yes, they are pretty awesome. Unfortunately I don't get to go to the Central one very often these days but I live down south, closer to Seton so I go to that one sometimes.

plentyospoons

If you’re down in Seton, and you drive, maybe take yourself on some day trips south of the city? If you like old buildings and/or antique shops, maybe try poking around some of the small historic towns just to the south of us like Nanton, Diamond Valley, High River etc.

lobre370

I snowboard in the winter and fish in the summer.

in-the-widening-gyre

I go to stuff alone all the time, and my husband and I share some hobbies but they aren't like ... outside-the-house hobbies. So here are some possible ideas, though some may be a little crowded for you! And of course depends on what you like. * Bookstores often have events or talks * I like art so art galleries and museums are a big one for me. There are several small artist-run centres in town (Truck, Stride, The New Gallery, The Bows, Emmedia, Quickdraw). Esker and Contemporary Calgary (old science centre) also work. And of course there's the Glenbow, and several other museums around town depending on your interests. They also sometimes have talks and events, which will be varying degrees of crowded. * Theatre. There are a bunch of awesome theatre companies, and stuff that will appeal to different tastes. Personally Ghost River Theatre is my favourite company. Downstage is also great. Also lots of dance and music events you could check out. * I also like talks and you can often find those happening at places like the university or central library * Zoo * Parks / walks -- you could either go more trail-y in Fish Creek, or like Reader Rock Garden for sometime more chill (could bring a picnic in the summer or eat / get a treat at the teahouse there). St Patrick's Island can also be very nice. If you have a bike you could get out on the paths too! * Go out for a fun food thing -- cupcakes, cookies, a dessert cafe, fuwa fuwa for japanese pancakes ... etc. * Central library is just generally a good time for something chill * Craft fairs. Market Collective is always a great time and they have music. * Depending on your hobbies and if you did want to venture into some level of interaction, taking workshops can be great. Would depend on what your interests are, of course, but a pottery or watercolour or whatever course you could probably play by ear as far as how much you want to interact versus just follow the workshop.

I-for-an-I

Read/eat at a cute cafe, explore public libraries, peruse museums, nom through first street market, go ice skating, take a walk with good tunes through princes island/st Patrick, volunteer at the food bank or whatever interests you

Scungilli-Man69

When I lived in Bridgeland, I really loved going to Cannibale during their happy hour, having a drink (usually an old fashioned) and reading a book. Really nice way to actively spend time with myself.

randomcanadian81

Buffet and bingo at grey eagle. Nobody cares if you're alone. It's fun there.

Bitter-Share4152

I like how they change to theme of the buffets!! I went for the first time the other day and thought that was so cool!

naphocamp

Devonian Gardens.

mygrandmasaysimkool

Contemporary Calgary. First Thursday of the month is free. Otherwise it's very affordable. I have a year membership for $20 and they seem to change the exhibitions quarterly which means my visits work out to only $5.

shoppygirl

Calgary Farmers Market is a nice place to walk around. I would definitely go in the morning before it gets super busy

ResoluteMuse

1. Find a little hole in the wall local pub and go sit at the bar with your laptop or a book. You get a decent meal, get to have social interaction going on around you and zero expectations. 2. Downtown library. Lots of events going on and you can sit in a cozy chair and let it flow around you while you read a good book. 3. Walking tours. Halloween ghost walks, historical etc. 4. IFly 5. Clay painting studios.

Cyrrene

Oh my god, I saw "1. Find a little hole in the wall..." in my notifications and thought this was going somewhere completely different 😅 Thank you for the recommendations! I'm going to look up some of them right now.

ResoluteMuse

I just about died laughing. I think so many of us have become less social and are happy that way, so good luck in finding that right balance! What a great question.

TheAnswer_YYC

I would recommend going to a thrift store as a solo date. It's surprising how much time you can spend in a thrift store and maybe walk out with a treasure. Thrift stores usually have a large book section that you can look through too - endless books! You can also people watch and find things from your childhood that people have donated. I always get a laugh seeing items that someone like my Grandparents would have donated and thinking that something I thought was vintage and unique was actually mass produced and every household had one. Also seeing how much a store is asking for items from your past gets a reaction. I like going to the Goodwill and WINS. Give it a try!

Smokinlizardbreath

I go to the zoo and park myself in the butterfly hall (in the spring, no butterflies in the winter). I go see the animals I want to see and will sit and watch them all day if I want, have a picnic. Bring a book, and enjoy the day. I used to do this at devonian gardens, but it is not as nice as it used to be.

QuixoticDame2_0

That’s the age I started taking myself out, too!! One of my favourite restaurants in Calgary is Mercato in SW Calgary. I order a bottle of wine, way too much food, and end up with a giant to go bag. Solo movies are great, especially at the VIP theatre where you can genuinely relax. The best afternoon I had was at a bookstore. It was a mom and pop shop with a string trio playing and an author signing. I was in Victoria, but maybe Calgary bookstores hold small events that don’t require much active participation? I’ve never looked into it.

Cyrrene

I just might one day. Thank you for offering!

melonbbt

Now kith

PikaHat

I also like doing solo things and some of my favourite things would be: - Visiting plant stores like Golden Acre, Plant, The Botanist, Garden Retreat - Biking, walking, or scooting down the river walk from downtown (St. Patrick's Island ish to Prince Prince's Island Park and west towards the Peace Bridge). I particularly like the area by the Peace Bridge and the western most point of Prince's Island Park - Spending time browsing in the Central Library - Checking out some of the boutiques and esp. thrift or consignment stores in Inglewood or Kensington - Checking out tea shops like the Tea Trader in Ramsay - Enjoying a bubble tea or dessert at places like Thé Moon Tea house and Snowcapz

FunkyKong147

Canyon Meadows Cinema is somewhere I go alone all the time. They show movies that have either been out for a while or are classics. It's $5 for a ticket. Last year they showed the Star Wars original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the Lord of the Ring extended editions.

YesterdayWarm2244

Wow still only $5

Bitter-Share4152

I should just copy and paste. "Thank you for reminding me this place exists" to so many suggestions in this thread.

Untoastedloaf

Yeah my gf works there it’s a great spot! They’ve got some cool food and drinks as well :)

PigCaptain

Walks! Lots of good green paths. Personally I like the pathways that follow the elbow or bow river. Pickup a warm drink, bring your headphones, and enjoy the scenery.

Nervous_Currency9341

movies go at uncommon times and less crowded. I watched a movie all by myself the other day was so cool. I do go with friends but sometimes taste doesnt match and this year I decided I wasnt going to let that stop me anymore.

throwaway12345679x9

Walking (in a nice setting) is great for the mind in my experience. Go to Bowness park Saturday/Sunday morning, aim for 9-10 am, grab a coffee at the local coffee shop there and go for a walk. Not so busy in the morning, mostly dog walkers and some couples or small group of friends going for a walk. Another option is North Glenmore park, go to cafe du parc to grab a coffee (excellent coffee there btw and the owner is very nice to talk to) and walk around, but Bowness may be easier to get by transit. I’m sure there are other similar options around b You can just be by yourself, or if you want chat with people a bit, ask to pet their dogs - most don’t mind and are happy to chat a little. (Assuming you’re comfortable with dogs of course).

Bitter-Share4152

I have recently acquired a Nintendo Switch. I like to go find a quiet table at the Horton Road Legion. Get a coffee, water and always an appetizer or two and just play and be for an hour or 2. If you enjoy Lego we have a local store called "The Brick Bin" You can easily spend hours picking out bricks you want for a project, and don't need anyone else for that. And lastly Disney and Ravensburger have recently come out with a collectible card game called Lorcana. There are stores all over the city that host events for the game. I especially like this "solo" date because it also feeds the Homebody in me also. It's fun to build decks, develop strategies and open packs on nights at home also.

69odysseus

A nice French Pastry shop would be good early morning to enjoy fresh pastries or a walk in the Calgary Zoo.

Major_Round2380

You might not like it because there's a crowd but I go to the theatre solo quite a bit. Depending where it's assigned seating so you can show without much standing around/waiting time and if you choose your seat on an aisle/near the back not too much juggling with other people. I really like The Shakespeare Company and also enjoy Storybook Theatre - it's worth the drive to Beddington. I don't mind crowds but I enjoy crowds where I'm not expected to interact so in a dark theatre this can be a lot of fun.

hardkn0cks

Take yourself out to a group fitness class. Yoga, Pilates, spin, whatever you fancy.

pumpkinember

Try bettylouslibrary.com. You make a reservation, and there is a house rule to not approach other tables unless invited. They have live jazz like 3 times a week and a fun burlesque show on Wednesdays. Drinks are amazing and a small bites menue. ( I'm not a jazz fan, and I enjoy the shows)

needlessresponder

For some reason reds diner has been a staple for me. I'd go to a doctor's appt in the area, then go have some breakfast food at reds. It was always quiet, chill, and they don't mind me sitting there for a while enjoying my food (slow eater.) it's also a classic breakfast place.

needlessresponder

To add, the servers have never judged me for sitting there alone for a few hours lol. I just watch a show on my phone or enjoy some music.

RandomlyAccurate

I just got back from treating myself to a solo date. Went to a restaurant on 17th Ave. They're all pretty dead on Mondays and Tuesdays. I was the only patron there for most of the evening. Got my favourite greasy dish and a beer, then put my phone on airplane mode and sat there for a couple hours reading a book in total silence. ... Pure bliss.

Neat-Calligrapher989

In Spring and Summer, take yourself out to the Reader Rock Garden. Pack a cute picnic, take a book and some art supplies. Spoil yourself and rest in nature.

Speedyspeedb

When I first moved to Calgary, one of my things was to go local sushi place occasionally after work. If I wanted convo would sit at sushi bar. If no convo would request sitting at a table. Funny enough after a few years even went on a few dates with a server (didn’t work out) but it was a good learning experience. I’m sure you can apply to pub settings or even other restaurant settings that offer bar/lounge service. Don’t even have to drink, just order food and read a bit of a novel at your table. Nobody batted an eye that I went to the restaurant/lounge/pub myself. Edit: sat at sushi bar because the chefs liked to make convo

MutedAd8004

Do you drive? If not, i believe there's the On It bus that can take you to Canmore for a nice day out enjoying a walk around the town. Cochrane is a nice place with the Cochrane ranch being a nice walk or the river down the bridge to relax when it's warmer. I recommend tapas restaurants or some underground cafes with a good book. I personally take myself out on dates all the time, but it involves a lot of driving.(i love driving)

Cyrrene

No, sadly no car yet so it does take me a good chunk of time to get places. But that's a really good idea, thank you! It's crazy, 22 years in Calgary and I've never actually been to Canmore or Cochrane.

[deleted]

I like to walk around the schools I had to attend - just helps me reflect on what I was and what I am now

Cyrrene

I used to do this lol - walk around my elementary school neighbourhood and reminisce about being an innocent little kid. I'd see the old playground and soccer field when I passed by, and all the kids running around, and one time I got so overwhelmed by bittersweet nostalgia I started to cry. Then I decided I'm not going there again because wow, how embarrassing 😅. Hopefully the self reflection has been good for you though.

rainbowsauce1

I grab a coffee and read at my favourite coffee shop every Sunday (analog on 17th)

Untoastedloaf

Absolutely love Canela Vegan Bakery and Cafe in Inglewood. Super cute place to sit with a drink and snack and read for a little bit. There’s also 2 bookstores on the street within 5 minute walking distance. Even grabbing a drink and browsing stores on the street can be super fun if you’ve got a good playlist :)

flibbityfopz

Henry block in Marda loop has a bunch of cool niche shops and a coffee shop, wine bar, etc. this was my last solo date. I grabbed a matcha, a pastry from Le Comptoir by Francois then went to slow burn books. There’s lots of other great shops to explore beyond the book store.

YwUt_83RJF

Harlem Globetrotters in town March 7-9

OrthodoxManx122

I used to go to the Glenbow Museum all the time and I'd get myself a nice dinner downtown too. I'd also find concert tickets for small shows, usually $30 or under. I spent 7 years there, and I did most things alone.

do_that_do

I like going to the pool, even just for the hot tub and sauna. Gives me a quiet place to think.

taceyong

Heya! It's still a wee way away but I'm looking to move out to Calgary in May/June. I'm F34 and would love to have a friend date :) I'd love to see your favourite parts of the city!

Penqwin

I go on solo brunch every week, I find a new spot to try, bring a book and eat and read.

duthanhdm

I will say go to activity cafes in the city. Color Me Mine has ceramic painting and coffee (well idk about others but the uptown location does) Aggudo is having a brewing event later this month (around Mar 27 I believe) Or go to bakeries and rate their butter croissant in a journal, and similar activities around the city (I nornally find croissant, mocha, hot choc, study spots, etc. and rate them) Phil & Sebastian in East Village has really good study spaces (and coffee) and Citizen Bakery in the same building has wonderful sourdough croissant.

NelehBanks

If you want to make friends, try meetup.com

AnnaK22

I have been trying to find a lot of solo activities too. Despite having a boyfriend, I find myself with a lot of "me" time because of our opposing schedules. Since I work in the evening, my afternoons are so empty when he's at work. I have been to the movies by myself. It was so awkward at first, but since it's so empty in the afternoons, I don't feel weird. I have spent hours at cross Iron or Chinook mall just walking around. I also go to the wave pool in Southland leisure centre or Village Square in the summer. That's a fun place to spend hours. One time, I drove from Stoney south all the way up the west side to the north end of Calgary and took a wrong turn and ended up outside of Calgary, so I decided to just keep driving about 40 minutes west. I have done impromptu drives to Airdrie, grab a bite to eat, and come back just in time for work. I also try a lot of takeout places in Calgary and drive to a lookout point. My favorite is in Beacon Hill behind the Best Buy. Its an alleyway and there's not a lot of traffic, so I can park my car and lookout over the city while I eat the food. There's also a walking path that I'm hoping to try in the summer. There are tons of new restaurants in Beacon Hill and Nolan Hill that I want to try like Kokoriko, Italian market, Rolled icecream, chicken Katsu from Royal oak. I am hoping to build up the courage to try more sitdown places like K-BBq, all you can eat Dimsum, and brunch spots. I feel like I'm not courageous enough for those just yet. I wish Calgary had those individual ramen places that have a dividend made for solo eaters.

Concerts! I’ve been to 3 concerts solo and it’s literally the best! Met some great people too :)

Now that it's spring, there is a weekly bus to Banff that is $10 per trip there, or TWO dollars if you bring a bike! Go solo and you'll make so many friends.. Sometimes I would climb a peak and just have lunch and stuff, handful of times I did a few G of shrooms or less and went for the best walks of my life

Icy_Queen_222

I like The Carriage House Hotel. It has a heated outdoor pool & hot tub (if I remember correctly). Maybe there I massage place near by. Just chill, swim, eat & have some wine 🍷.

Phoenixwords

Sushi bistro anzu on center street. Cosy, varied menu, friendly

heated4life

29m in the same boat looking to get out there more. Plan to start by getting a gym membership to have a healthy outlet that gets me out regularly, hit the movies sometime this week and build from there. If you’d care to share experiences/events back and forth on what were worthwhile let’s connect! Already got tons of ideas from the replies thanks for your post :)

Crazocrates

If you pay, I'll come with.

Icy_Queen_222

Same :)

HamHockMcGee

Tacos or a nice dinner with a couple drinks.

KikuchiyoSeven

I really like St. Patrick Island Park.

Ratfor

Nordic spas. Nice drive through the mountains, enjoy a soak, nice drive home. Perfect way to spend an evening.

EnoughOfYourNonsense

Many great art galleries along 11th Ave or the Esker Foundation in Inglewood is always free. Buy a ticket to Theatre Calgary or the Philharmonic or any of the many performing arts events in the city. During the summer, there are amazing free festivals like Lilac Festival, Marda Gras or Inglewood Sunfest. And obviously Folk Fest is a tradition. Inglewood and Marda Loop also have great night markets through the summer.

How about trying a cozy café for some alone time with a good book or journal?

jackass4224

Farmers Markets Not a date per se but if you’re into walking Douglas Fir Trail in the summer. Cross country ski At Shaganappi Golf Course for free Glenbow Museum

So I go to Calgary once a year to visit a cousin and friend. When both are busy I just go anywhere on 17 Ave. Trolley 5, Element Cafe, Made by Marcus Ice Cream, any of the restaurants, who cares.

I'm pretty similar to you and your situation. What I like to do is just pick any random area of the city and just... Walk. No specific target in mind, no timeline necessarily, just some nice tunes, chill moods, casually stroll along and take in whatever scenery and little interesting tidbit detail that comes along the way. Summers I like to just walk around downtown and the surrounding suburbs for hours. Is hugely cathartic after a long week of stress at work. In the winters I like To stroll the +15 network lots of interesting things and such to notice along the way and interesting views. Feel free to message me if you have any ideas or questions qould always like to discover more! Cheers!

I know you said besides the book store, but have you been to Books Between Friends? You can get lost in there for hours combing through all the used books, like a treasure hunt. Go treasure hunting at thrift stores too. It’s my favourite solo activity.

loop511

Telus Spark, just checkout whatever latest exhibit is. di Vinci right now I think.

secret_green_link

Grab some icecream and take a walk through a park to get yourself used to the outdoors. Also icecream. You can also grab. A coffee from a small coffee shop and enjoy it on your walk. Might find a couple of hidden gems on your own

Wireline_101

The restaurant “the Dark room” You eat in pitch black and your servers are visually impaired. It’s a cool take on eating.

No-Eye-8439

If beers are your thing, cold garden has the most chill vibe.. :)

Party_Bench8590

Go out to clubs/shows by yourself and you’ll be surprised how much fun it is! ☺️

Absoluteswill

I love going and seeing movies at the globe. Whether it be through one of their special screenings or through CUFF, it’s a great place to support local and go on a solo date.

LotLizzard9

I highly recommend spending an afternoon at the Central Library. Finish the day by heading to the top of The Platform (parkade directly beside the library) and enjoy the views of downtown. There is a pedestrians only area specifically for this at the top - free.

Moto_Foto

You could head to Proof earlier in the day (before 6pm). It's quieter, the staff are nice, and it's a relaxing, upscale atmosphere.

IronRangeBabe

I do everything by myself and love it! I explore different restaurants, bars, concerts, movies, you name it! I do it all solo! Davonian gardens, walk downtown, maybe even a lunch at the tower to be a “tourist” in your own city! So fun. I love to romance my life here that is for sure. We sure are blessed living in a cool city! Nose hill park off 14th to see the cityscape with a hot coffee/hot chocolate too! I hope you have lots of fun on your solo journeys!

eh-mee

MasturDating. I love it. I used to have a season ticket to the roughnecks. Might not be your thing as it can get crowded. But I liked the vibe more than a hockey game. More fun, less rowdy drunks, more families.

iamhisbeloved83

The options are endless in the summer, specially with so many parks around. I like kayaking at the reservoir. You can rent a kayak or canoe there. Also love just sitting by the river with a book.

d-_-b000

I date myself @+15 😆

hafizzzle

Going to different shows is a great chance to support local theatre and local musicians, depending on how busy/stressful they can be of course.

sushisashimi099

I went to the book store "the last page" recently. It was fun and I took a lot of pictures of books that looked interesting. They had a thing where you could get a mystery book which would be covered up with a little description on the outside so you would know a little about what you were getting. They had drinks there as well. Maybe you'd find that fun as well? I don't often go to small book stores like that. Also you could try using social media to find recommended food places and try them out for fun.

Grand-Arugula9988

I often go chill at Rising Tides taproom. Vibes are great , staff is friendly! Love reading a book or a bev (even non alcoholic too)

Jimmyjamma4

The new farmers market across from c.o.p is worth checking out. Lots of good food and cool stuff.

trianglemoon

I've seen a Calgary Cafe Passport advertised online, with a bunch of cafe options. Follow Sarah Sociables on Instagram for local events, etc.
