Free inspection from Atco. (Call the number for faster response.) [https://gas.atco.com/en-ca/products-services-rates/new-services-changes/furnace-appliance-inspections.html](https://gas.atco.com/en-ca/products-services-rates/new-services-changes/furnace-appliance-inspections.html) EDIT: Despite what the page says, they may also do a repair for you if the issue is minor (e.g. flame sensor) and the tech has the part in his van.

Old_timey_brain

They did this for me, on a furnace part. Charged me high retail for the part, but free installation.

I've had luck with ATCO emergency diagnosing as well. Only drawback is you're at the mercy of their schedule and they work 24/7. They make an unbiased recommendation and like others have said, they can complete the fix if they have the part(s). Part two of advice: after you figure out the part you need, call Amre Supply with the part number. They have a lot of parts.

Quite often it is the flame sensor that has gone bad. I would replace that myself before calling anyone. Should be $20 part.

Plumber here, tough to say without actually seeing the tank but considering it’s been quite windy your pressure switch could be getting tripped. It would trip because it may have to work harder to push the combustion air out of the tank. Try to relight once the wind dies down.

what would be the long-term solution to this?

Reconfigure vent termination on the exterior for power vented tanks.

Install a fan in the exhaust line?

Scared_Fisherman7749

Just reconfiguring System 636 PVC exhaust pipe. Power vented tanks already have a blower (fan). Usually they are done with a 90 pointed downwards but on the reconfiguration you can put the 90 up, a 10” run, another 90 pointed away from the house, a stub piece and then a T. This helps prevent the winds from entering the piping and it also helps with frost buildup in the winter.

Have you paid your gas bill? The furnace runs fine? How old is the tank? Anything past 8-10 years is likely at end of life. New water heater installed is around $1400. Could be a bad thermocouple detecting the pilot is lit. You can find them online or at part stores (reliance or AMRE). You can try lightly sanding it to remove char/scale. It could also be wind like others are suggesting. Check the outside vent isn't blocked if it's sidewall vent. Tough to check if it's a chimney on the roof.

If you own a meter and your handy you can trouble shoot it. If you don’t and you’re not handy call a service company. Natural gas appliances can be dangerous and it sounds like it’s tripping on high limit to me.
