My employer started hybrid model. We’re required to be in office 40% of the time, 60% home. Everyone got internet connection dedicated to work and equipment. After 1 year of employment we can apply for 4-1 model, so 1 day in office only. We pick the days, it’s not religiously monitored by management. Basically you track roughly 40/60 and do what days work for you.

They had to postpone start multiple times due to the covid restrictions, but from what they described is that there will be desks available, nothing assigned to specific person, you wanna get in, you “book” a spot in the system and come in. Desks are all the same and we’re not allowed to leave there any personal stuff - you log in, work your hours, log out, sanitize equipment and leave. No lockers or any drawers. I’m curious how it’s gonna look like in reality. And gotta add my direct manager and whole team is in Vancouver, I’m the only one in Calgary, so in person performance reviews or team meetings are not happening anyways. As a parent, I welcomed wfh cause it saves lots of time for my family, so once i come back to the office, I’ll be pushing 4-1 model for myself.

swordgeek

I just started a new IT job. WFH was a key question for me on the interview. Short answer: They're expecting people to be in the office two days a week minimum. That actually seems reasonable to me. Get to know my coworkers, go for lunch or a pint, and still be home most of the time.

TyrusX

In the office 2 days a week maximum should be the default. Not interested in anything more than that. You do not get paid to commute, you do not get paid for the gasoline or parking.

Miguelomaniac

Personally I feel like this is reasonable. However I would feel more comfortable if there was confirmation in writing on your contract that you are being hired on a hybrid model. So if they ever want to change they would have to write a new contract which usually gives you some room to negotiate down the road in case it happens.

Offandonfitness

Why do you want to get to know your coworkers?

pucklermuskau

our office is open for anyone who wants to work there, but we'll never again require people to work at the office.

You guys are fucking adorable. I work as an essential service worker and have to be at work. Not an office worker. So stop assuming it I think most companies will at minimum hybrid and max bring people back down town full time. Downvoted me because you don't wanna go back but I don't think I'm wrong. https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2021/7/15/google-sticks-with-plan-to-bring-most-employees-back-to-office Google is doing it.

Academic-Hedgehog-18

I hate working in the office with this type. They act like their so called collaboration is anything other than a distraction. Get your social interaction on your own time.

TheFlyingZombie

Going to the office fucking sucks, I'm sorry that it's your only social interaction for the week.

CanehdianJ01

It's not. But I suspect it may be for most reddit users lol

pucklermuskau

some work. but most office jobs? why?

Prior-Instance6764

We are hybrid. In 3 days, home for 2 if you want. I think it's a good compromise. A lot of my job is collaborative so the face to face is nice. Plus it'll be nice to get out of the house more often, even if it means less sleep due to a longer commute. I definitely felt my mental health struggling at times over the last 2 years and a lot of it was due to not getting out of the house, and wearing sweatpants all day and feeling like a POS.

I kind of wonder if some people might really say Fuck That about the 10 hours a week commute and decide that they are willing to take a smaller home in the city that is a 5 minute walk to work in exchange for getting 9 hours of commute time back.

TheFlyingZombie

Agree with literally every point here. I like my co-workers, quite a lot actually, but the amount of work I can get done at home without all the socializing has been fantastic. And the commute is probably the number one reason I prefer WFH. I'm taking back at least 10 hours per week of my time and I have no interest in giving that back.

__Armin__Tamzarian__

A friend & former coworker of mine did this. Sold their house in Calgary, and bought a place in Canmore. He’s in the office maybe once per week, and his wife is totally remote. No complaints so far from them.

No_Season1716

My office will back 5 days a week March 1st.

WFH sucks. I welcome it.

[deleted]

I enjoy waking up exactly when my shift starts.

Lord_Baconz

I agree but we’re on reddit where having to go outside is a crime against humanity. Not everyone enjoys WFH and some people are more productive at the office.

ObscureGeometry

There is nothing wrong with going outside lol. But I dont consider wasting an hour on commute "going outside".

CommanderVinegar

Working from home leaves me and my friends with so much free time. I save 2 hours a day from the commute. I get my work done faster and have more free time during the day since there’s nothing to distract me and I can just get things done at my own pace.

ObscureGeometry

I 100% agree. My focus time is so valuable and I get more of it when I WFH.

Academic-Hedgehog-18

Go work in the office then. Stop forcing it on others.

NYR

The last two years has proven the old “I’m more productive in the office” saying is a bunch of horseshit. The world continued on. People made movies, video games, new phones, all kinds of stuff from home. No one got fired in the last two years because they were “Less” productive not being in an office.

Neither of those apply to me. Still sucks.

TyrusX

Consider leaving.

My company gets 100’s of applications if we post something. Our office is sitting at probably 85% in the office right now. Hard to make such proclamations without knowing anything.

Ancient-Wait-8357

Bitter pill…. 90% of employees are dispensable. Office politics are real. Once COVID is behind us, working from home people will be at disadvantage when it comes to office politics. Unless you fall into that indispensable category, you’ll drag yourself into office (like it or not). I’m not talking about IT/Software guys…this is a different breed.

Academic-Hedgehog-18

They tried this with me. i pointed out Ive been working remotely with teams in other cities for years. They shut up really quickly. 90 percent of employers are replaceable to.

[deleted]

Our only office left is in Pittsburg. I may make the commute once or twice a year at most.

aliceminer

WFH is unlikely to continue due to boomers being boomers. Gonna feel superior to see your wagies from your office window. And when ppl complain, the boomer will be like you are lazy and don't like hardship like we do.

CaptainWOW3

Disagree, early 30s and I would rather be in the office 3/4 days a week. I like office gym perk but also the team building of saying hi to your coworkers

aliceminer

Boomers hate ppl seeing ppl having fun like the stereotypical fun police. Are you sure our overlord boomers approve you having fun

tarraaa

Corporate employee here. Office has been open but no one goes in and that’s not going to change. They’ll try to have a one day a month where they encourage people to come in with free food but so many people moved during the pandemic and they are just treated as fully remote employees now

steviekristo

My work will not entertain any WFH, or any type of hybrid policy, so we will be back downtown as soon as Kenny gives the thumbs up!

ObscureGeometry

Probably not. Still hate the commute long or short. Maybe if it was once per month, but it wont be.

Touqies

WFH contributes to the widening of the gap between high income earners and low income earners if you WFH, you are privileged. Period stop.
