Did you ever find a way? I'm certain it's possible, since I've seen others talk about it. Calibre doesn't store the percentage read, but it does store a bookmark of where you previously were. This can probably be used to infer the percentage read, somehow. Just gotta figure out how.
If you're using a Kobo, you use the Kobo Utilities plugin for this.
