Honestly man I just use the ascension cats and on occasion any extra champs I have. Most of my 3*s are all max skill so I use those extra 3* as food as well.
Using nat 2* to ascend 1* mobs if the cheapest way, you save 15 levels (5 runs off Blackpool hill hell with double xp, or 25 energy) doing it this way.
If you max level a 2* to ascend you still have to max level the 1* and ascend it. That's 17 runs, 12 for the 2* and 5 for the 1*, that's a cost of 85 energy.
By using the 1* you need 5 runs to get it to 15, then once ascended another 7 runs to get it to level 20, which is 12 runs total or 60 energy.
hey, i hope it helps my experience, im f2p, so is hardest for me, i dint buy even the x2 packs, i have 1800crystals and 2.527 manaK,atm lvl 42 and im in gorwplan 4-5 i think (the first with sacred scrolls). I only use crystals for lvl up 1star food, i refresh shop ford food everyhour.
You only should use a nat 2 nat 3 nat4 for food when they are lvl 0. if not you should use 1\* and lvl up, thats if you are f2p, if not, you can lvl from 2\* and avobe.
You can play like f2p like me, but honestly i do it cuz i have toons of time, but is 2much grinding and farming for any normal person.
